Palaeoenvironmental and palaeoceanographic changes during the Lower to Middle Jurassic ( Toarcian-Aalenian, ~183-171 Ma) : new evidences from calcareous nannofossils of the Lusitanian Basin / Changements paléoenvironnementaux et paléocéanographiques au cours de l'intervalle Toarcien-Aalénien (183-171 Ma, Jurassique inférieur-Moyen) : des nouvelles évidences issues de l'étude des nannofossiles calcaires du bassin Lusitanien

Ferreira, Jorge 04 March 2016 (has links)
At ~183 Ma when large amounts of organic matter was dumped onto the ocean beds (known as the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event, T-OAE), the Early Toarcian marine biota experienced one of the most important biological crises in Earth history. Calcareous nannoplankton was deeply affected and started only to recover from the end of the Early Toarcian. After the T-OAE, as phytoplankton communities dwelling the oceans photic layer recover from the previous disturbing conditions, the ecological niches once occupied by calcareous nannoplankton are again replenished. Located in the westernmost part of the Tethyan ocean, the Lusitanian Basin acted as a seaway between the NW Tethys and the Mediterranean Tethys provinces, therefore been actively influenced by these two different water masses. Hence such a region stands as the perfect spot to study the calcareous nannoplankton community, as its fossil remains bears species typical of both provinces. In order to appraise the nannoplankton demise and subsequent recovery, absolute and relative abundances of nannofossils were determined from pelagic marl-limestone couplets from three sections of the Lusitanian Basin. Also brachiopods shells were investigated for stable carbon and oxygen isotopes analysis. In order to independently assess the morphologic evolution of Lotharingius coccoliths, a Toarcian section from south France was studied. Different statistic methodologies were used throughout this work, in order to screen for robust and significant information from the numerous datasets that were built / Há cerca de 183 milhões de anos atrás, a biota marinha sofreu uma das mais importantes crises biológicas na história do planeta, quando grandes quantidades de matéria orgânica foram depositadas nos fundos oceânicos.

Felipe Giusepone 29 November 2010 (has links)
The design of stable excavations using rock masses characterization with the tools provided by rock mechanics, are indispensable for optimizing the economic exploitation of ore deposits, to ensure the safety in the mining works and to minimize the environmental impacts deriving of the open pit slopes instability. / The Late Cretaceous period is characterized by global climatic transition that influenced calcareous nannofossil assemblages posing a challenge for biostratigraphic interpretation between different latitudinal degrees. There are a few studies on South Atlantic calcareous nannofossils from 1980 and 1990 decades, but none of them evaluate the South Atlantic as a whole. Therefore, this study aims to describe the calcareous nannofossils assemblages in each latitudinal zone and test the bioevents synchroneity. It were selected 649 samples from twelve cored sections coming from DSDP (Deep Sea Drilling Project) e ODP (Ocean Drilling Program) close to the Brazilian and African margins, in addition to an outcrop in the Antarctic Peninsula. The taxonomic study allowed the identification of 197 calcareous nannofossils species from the Campanian and Maastrichtian. Using the correlation between the biostratigraphical data and magnetostratigraphy, it was possible to identify diachronism in some bioevents of first and last occurrences during the late Campanian and late Maastrichtian. This diachronism is related to species migration between low and mid-latitudes, due to changes in the ocean circulation and surface water temperature. Based on the latitudinal variation in the calcareous nannofossils assemblages, a detailed biostratigraphic study enabled the South Atlantic division in three zonations (low, medium and high-latitudes). We also defined the distribution pattern of some species, indicating a clear paleobiogeographical division between high latitude species and some species limited to low and mid-latitudes. This pattern was possibly controlled by surface water temperature variation. Other species have a wide distribution across the latitudes probably related to nutrient availability.

Late Eocene through Oligocene calcareous nannofossils from the paleo-equatorial Pacific Ocean – taxonomy, preservation history, biochronology and evolution

Blaj, Teodora January 2009 (has links)
This study aims to unravel the ecological and evolutionary dynamics within the calcareous nannofossil communities at the Eocene/Oligocene (E/O) transition and during the Oligocene time when Cenozoic 'icehouse' conditions were established. The main question this study aims to answer is whether the changes in the nannofossil assemblages were controlled by intrinsic evolutionary trends or if the changes were controlled by environmental factors such as changes in temperature and nutrient availability in the surface water. These questions are addressed with detailed analyses of the taxonomy, biostratigraphy and fluctuations in abundance and diversity of calcareous nannofossil assemblages from a continuous latest Eocene through Oligocene sediment section from the ODP Site 1218 (8°53.38´N, 135°22.00´W), paleo-equatorial Pacific Ocean. An improved nannofossil taxonomy and biostratigraphy has been established. At the E/O transition, changes in the nannofossil preservation mimics changes in calcium carbonate content. A detailed investigation of late Eocene and Oligocene sediments yields age estimates for ten nannofossil bioevents. Morphometric studies of the Reticulofenestra umbilicus-R. hillae show that these cannot be subdivided into two different morphospecies. Based on different morphometry and stratigraphic ranges, the Oligocene Sphenolithus lineage appears to be the result of a combined anagenetic and cladogenetic evolution. A new nannolith species is described: Triquetrorhabdulus longus. High-resolution nannofossil data indicate changes in the composition, abundance and diversity of the mid-Oligocene assemblages. Intervals of high diversity index coincide with Oi-glaciation events. However, visual examination of the variations in abundance of nannofossil taxa do not appear to correlate with changes in either oxygen or carbon isotopes. This presumably indicates that a dynamic equilibrium did not exist between these Oligocene nannoplankton assemblages and changes in surface water temperature or productivity conditions. / Doctoral Thesis in Marine Geoscience at Stockholm University, Sweden 2009

Use Of Waste Pyrite From Mineral Processing Plants In Soil Remediation

Aydin, Gulsen 01 November 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Pyrite (FeS2) is commonly present in complex sulphide ores in significant amounts. After the enrichment of such ores by flotation, pyrite is either produced as a separate concentrate and sold to acid manufactures or removed and disposed off as tailing. Due to lack of demand from manufacturers, most of pyrites is usually disposed off as tailing. Therefore, pyrite is usually a waste from complex sulphide ores. Yet, it may be a remediation additive for calcareous soils and calcareous- alkali soils deficient in Fe and other micronutrients such as Cu, Zn and Mn. Waste pyrite may be also an alternative amendment to gypsum because of the production of sulphuric acid which is effectively used in the reclamation of calcareous alkali soils. The effectiveness of adding waste pyrite and sulphuric acid produced from waste pyrite to calcareous-alkali soil (Sarayk&ouml / y-Ankara) and calcareous soil (Gaziantep) was studied under laboratory conditions. Pure gypsum was also used as an amendment for the comparison of the effectiveness of waste pyrite in the reclamation of alkali soils. Gypsum, powder waste pyrite and sulphuric acid were applied to the soil with reference to the gypsum requirement (GR) of the soils. Greenhouse pot tests were carried out with wheat as test plant to determine the effect of waste pyrite treatment on the plant yield (wheat) and on the amount of micronutrient (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn) essential for plant growth. Hazard potential of pyritic tailings in terms of heavy metal contamination was also taken into account. The results showed that the soil pH and exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), indicators of alkalization, decreased upon pyrite addition to calcareous- alkali soils of Sarayk&ouml / y-Ankara. It was also found that pyritic tailings were effective in the increasing level of essential micronutrients (Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn) for plant growth in both soils. This was ascertained by the dry matter yield of the plants in the green house pot tests. Heavy metal toxicity caused by pyrite which is a rightful concern remained well below the legal limits in the soils. Thus, it was concluded that the application of pyritic tailings promoted rapid amelioration of calcareous-alkali soil (Sarayk&ouml / y-Ankara) and calcareous soil (Gaziantep) with no deleterious heavy metal contamination.

Numerical analysis of shallow circular foundations on sands

Yamamoto, Nobutaka January 2006 (has links)
This thesis describes a numerical investigation of shallow circular foundations resting on various types of soil, mainly siliceous and calcareous sands. An elasto-plastic constitutive model, namely the MIT-S1 model (Pestana, 1994), which can predict the rate independent behaviour of different types of soils ranging through uncemented sands, silts and clays, is used to simulating the compression, drained triaxial shear and shallow circular foundation responses. It is found that this model provides a reasonable fit to measured behaviour, particularly for highly compressible calcareous sands, because of the superior modelling of the volumetric compression. The features of the MIT-S1 model have been used to investigate the effects of density, stress level (or foundation size), inherent anisotropy and material type on the response of shallow foundations. It was found that the MIT-S1 model is able to distinguish responses on dilatant siliceous and compressible calcareous sands by relatively minor adjustment of the model parameters. Kinematic mechanisms extracted from finite element calculations show different deformation patterns typical for these sands, with a bulb of compressed material and punching shear for calcareous sand, and a classical rupture failure pattern accompanied by surface heave for siliceous sand. Moreover, it was observed that the classical failure pattern transforms gradually to a punching shear failure pattern as the foundation size increases. From this evidence, a dimensional transition between these failure mechanisms can be defined, referred to as the critical size. The critical size is also the limiting foundation size to apply conventional bearing capacity analyses. Alternative approaches are needed, focusing mainly on the soil compressibility, for shallow foundations greater than the critical size. Two approaches, 1-D compression and bearing modulus analyses, have been proposed for those foundation conditions. From the validations, the former is applicable for extremely large foundations, very loose soil conditions and highly compressible calcareous materials, while the latter is suitable for moderate levels of compressibility or foundation size. It is suggested that appropriate assessment of compression features is of great importance for shallow foundation analysis on sand.

Možnosti krasovění vápnitých pískovců v jizerské faciální oblasti české křídové pánve a vývoj kanálů v kvádrových pískovcích / Possibilities of karstification of calcareous sandstones in the Jizera segment of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin and evolution of conduits in the thick-bedded sandstones

Vojtíšek, Jan January 2018 (has links)
Features typical for karst, such as fast groundwater flow and existence of open conduits were observed in various parts of Bohemian Cretaceous Basin (BCB). So far, vertical and areal extent of karst rocks is not known. In case of concerning conduits in quartz sandstones the observation of their evolution in profiles perpendicular to flow is missing. The thesis deals with above mentioned issues. Concerning potential to karstification it is limited to Jizera facial area of BCB. For this purpose, leaching of samples in hydrochloric acid were carried out. The hydrochloric acid was used as an accelerated simulation of natural processes of dissolution of rock by acidic solutions. The reaction of samples on leaching in acid, disintegration and content of the CaCO3 component were evaluated. CaCO3 content was determined also by calcimetry. Rocks which disintegrated can be a suitable for the evolution of karst conduits. According to the lithostratigraphic sections, the examined profiles belong to the TUR5 and TUR6 units - thus these units contain rocks suitable for the evolution of karst conduits. In Předměřice site about 23 % of samples disintegrated, in Kosmonosy site 8 % and in Turnov site 36 % disintegrated. Thus about 1/10 to 1/3 of tested profiles is prone to karstification and evolution of karst...

A study of human pineal gland structure, using optic microscopy, scanning eletron microscopy, x-ray spectrometry. scanning microscopy and x-ray difraction.

Sérgio Felipe de Oliveira 03 June 1998 (has links)
As formações calcáreas possuem tamanhos e formas diferentes. / The structure of human pineal gland was studied by optic microscopy, scanning eletromicroscopy, spectrometer x-ray scanning eletron microscopy with energy dispersion (EDS). The tissues to analysis by optic microscopy were fixed in formalin at 1O % during 48 h and put in parffin. For S.E.M., the tissues were fixed in modified Kamovsky solution, and a part of the material was fracturated in liquid nitrogen to analysis of internal characteristic of the pineal body. The results showed that the pineal body has calcareon concretion distributed in the connective tissue. In the internai position, the calcareon structure was made of concentrics lamelae with amorf aspect. The x-ray difractor showed the cristalin structure of the atom arrangement of the elements that compose the calcarean concretions.

Un exemple tunisien / Influence of limestones sands rich of fillers on the properties of the concretes with and without superplasticizer. A Tunisian example

Joudi-Bahri, Imène 10 November 2012 (has links)
The objective of this work is to study the effect of the quantity of fillers on the rheological, mechanical and dimensional properties of calcareous concretes. These concretes were made with the same coarse aggregates and same sand coming from the same production, in order to avoid any artifact. Sand was used to manufacture five sands representative of the categories defined in the EN 12260 norm for aggregates for concretes, by mixture with its fine fraction or its grained fraction extracted beforehand by washing. The employed sands contain approximately 0, 6, 12, 18 and 24 % of fillers. The concretes were formulated with the BetonlabPro2 software, whose algorithms take into account the presence of the fillers limestones. Concretes were realized at first without superplastifiant, then in the presence of a superplastifiant measured in 2/3 of saturation. The obtained results showed that a quantity of fillers limestones from 100 to 130 kg/m3 for the concretes and from 60 to 80 kg / m3 for superplasticizred concretes allows obtaining optimal properties, in equal consistency. But, higher quantities of fillers do not deteriorate significantly the properties of the concretes, even if their packing density decreases. One explains this behavior not only by the binding effect allotted to the fillers limestones, but also by an improvement of the paste-aggregates bond. Mixtures containing the strongest rates of fillers were again studied to formulate self compacting concretes SCC, which require a big quantity of fillers. Crushed sands bring then the major part of this constituent, what opens to them a new way of use
