Římské fortifikace v egyptské Západní poušti / Roman fortifications in Western Desert in Egypt

Ford, Veronika January 2021 (has links)
The work will focus mainly on the collection of available written and archaeological data on Roman fortifications and other fortification elements in the Western Desert in Egypt. The data will be organized with the help of a database program, in which will be recorded all available information about the desert fortifications dating from the end of the 3rd century to the beginning of the 5th century AD. Thanks to the creation of this database, it will be possible to compare individual fortifications in terms of construction technology, layout, position and orientation. The potential of the work itself is therefore in the collection, comparison, and evaluation of available information. At the same time, the database will be connected to a geographic information system (GIS), which will first record the exact location of individual fortifications and other elements in the Western Desert and secondly a map of caravan routes passing through the area. As part of the evaluation of the mutual positions of fortifications and other fortification elements and caravan routes, it will also be possible to interpret localities in the context of the main roads passing through the area of the Western Desert. Key words: Roman fortifications, Roman army, Egypt, Western desert, oases, caravan routes

Římské fortifikace v egyptské Západní poušti / Roman fortifications in Western Desert in Egypt

Ford, Veronika January 2021 (has links)
The work presents the Egyptian Western Desert, in its oases and caravan roads during Roman rule (1st -5th century AD). It focuses mainly on the collection of available written and archaeological data on Roman fortifications and puts it into context with other general information about the Western Desert. The interest is focused on the period 3rd -5th century AD, when the oases were fortified. The individual fortifications and fortification elements are described and set in the context of the whole oasis and events during Roman rule. Furthermore, the issue concerning the designation of these elements as fortification elements is clarified and they are compared not only among themselves, but also with other similar structures in Egyptian territory. At the same time, the work describes caravan roads connecting oases with each other to the Nile valley and the Mediterranean coast; outlines the relationship of fortification elements to these roads. The work thus creates a comprehensive picture of the Western Desert during Roman rule. Key words: Roman fortifications, Roman army, Egypt, Western desert, oases, caravan routes.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Dayane Santos Araujo.pdf: 3891493 bytes, checksum: 26ff8da6749431a6e42dbd26d93ec0cb (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-02-25 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the return of political autonomy to the City of Santos, lost in 1969 when Mayor Esmeraldo Tarquínio Filho of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (MDB) was impeached two days before being arrested under Institutional Act No. 5 (IA-5), and replaced by General Clóvis Bandeira Brasil. For 14 years, the city was commanded by mayors appointed by the military and was defined as an area of national security. In 1983 a Bill concerning the return of autonomy authored by Congressman Gastone Righi of the Brazilian Labor Party (PTB) was sent to the Federal Board and unanimously approved. However it was unable to pass the Senate the first time for lack of a quorum and vote, and disappointment overtook the political leadership and the residents. The Bill was subsequently placed on the agenda on an emergency basis. And in order to insure a vote some councilors of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB) organized a bus caravan with 180 residents that left from Santos to Brasilia. However autonomy did not result as expected, but from a Declaration by the Acting President Aureliano Chaves in 1983. Even so, a festive atmosphere was evident in the city, and the following year Santos elected Oswaldo Justo as its first mayor following the winning of autonomy. His vice-mayor was the son of Esmeraldo Tarquínio, with the same name as his father.

A Changing Climate : How Climate is Communicated in Swedish and North American News Media / Klimatförändringar. Hur klimat kommuniceras i svenska och nordamerikanska nyhetsmedier

Kalla, Hanna January 2019 (has links)
This study analyses the frames and discourses in different news media reporting on the same events in news outlets in Canada, the US, and Sweden. This was done by analysing both digital-born media and legacy media. The theoretical framework consists of theories about discourse, framing, media logics, the economic prerequisites for journalism, and environmental journalism. The aim is to find what frames, discourses, tone and what voices are being heard in the news coverage of Greta Thunberg’s climate protest, the migrant caravan, and the UN report on climate change released in 2018. Also, differences in the different media are analysed. This is done through discourse analysis by using Fairclough’s CDA and the three-dimensional model, combined with tools from critical linguistics. The analysis of the news texts found that the discourses in the coverage of the three events followed previous research on journalistic values, production and the way that climate change events were reported (or not reported) on. The study also found some themes, frames, that were producing new discourses in climate change journalism. Among these was the way that Greta Thunberg and other young voices were heard on a subject that previously has been heavily focused on politicians, scientists and NGO’s. Thunberg and the migrant caravan were also covered more extensively by the news media included than the UN report, not framing climate in the articles, even though they are about climate change events.

Kocna, Jan January 2019 (has links)
Jan KOCNA, Development of trade routes in Maka during the Hellenistic period and in the early Principate, master's thesis, FF UK, Prague 2019 This master's thesis aims to analyse the trade routes network of ancient Maka during the last three c. BC and first c. AD. In the course of this time frame the discussed region, covering the majority of land area of the contemporary United Arab Emirates and the northern Oman, enjoyed the benefits of a wide range of various cross-cultural and commercial contacts and constituted a key junction between India, Mesopotamia and Arabia proper. In a phased manner, the individual chapters will introduce each of the different elements contributing to the structure of the whole trade apparatus, and, on the basis of available (e. g. archaeological) data, attempt to designate the character of the position of specific Makan centers within the broader system of long-distance trade mechanisms. Both long-distance trade transformation processes emanating from the constant changes in Makan political vicinity and reorientation of originally mostly caravan driven trade to the maritime one will be brought into consideration. The observed phenomena will include variation in the arrangement of central import/export markets, or successive adjustments of the basic commodity groups and...
