Är vi lika dem? : en kraniestudie av hominider ur ett evolutionistiskt perspektiv / Do we look like them? : a studie of craniums from hominids in an evolutionary perspective

<p>By examine plastic craniums from eight different hominids I wanted to find morfological characteristics that agreed with those of modern humans. The species that were selected had a plastic casting of its cranium in the laboratory at Gotland University. My focus was on species from the family <em>Australopithecius </em>and <em>Homo </em>and only working with their craniums. And this because the cranium and the theeth shows the most visible morfological characteristics between the different hominids. I also wanted,in a small part of the essay, to write about the differences in now living primates and humans skulls.</p><p>Except from analysing the plastic castings I also studied surveys written by other scientist on the same subject. And in that chapter write as much about the whole skeleton as possible, eventhough that was not my main field, but I wanted to give the readers an overview of the species before the analysis took place.</p><p>The most visible morfological characteristics is shown in the theeth because the diet changed during the million years that the evolution took place. It is possible to see the development in <em>Foramen magnum </em>too, the hole at the base of the skull were the vertebrate connects with the cranium. This hole gets more central over time showing that the species got more biped and started to walk upright on two legs just like humans do today. There are of course many more characteristics that are able to be seen that seperates us from the extinct hominids, but many of them are the same. If you look closely at the different craniums you can see how the fantastic evolution formed humans out of apes.</p><p>It has to be mentioned that the scientist have many different theoris about the evolution, the species and who are the real ancestors to humans and I think the disagreement will continue for many years to come.</p>

Novel Processing Methods and Mechanisms to Control the Cast Microstructure in Al Based Alloys - 390 and Wrought Alloys

The enactement of the Energy Policy and conservation Act of 1975, led to a paradigm shift in material selection and design in the automotive industry. The net effect was an increased focus by the automotive industry toward the use of light metals leading for the reduction of weight and hence, the dependence of imported oil. Increasing use of aluminum was a transition in that direction. However, raw aluminum on an average is 1.5 - 2 times as expensive as steel. Near net shape manufacturing processes (Die casting, Thixo-forging, etc) provided the much needed competitive advantage vis-à-vis steel / iron parts by permitting the manufacturing of Al components. Semi solid processing involves the net shape manufacturing of alloys in a two phase region (liquid + solid). The reduced turbulence (during casting), less entrapped gases and lower operating temperatures (processes below the liquidus) make semi solid processing ideal for the manufacturing of high integrity Al parts. Traditionally, semi solid processing involved the heating of billets to a two phase region (called Thixcasting). Rheocasting is a new semi solid processing technique wherein the alloy is cooled from a liquid state (a combination of controlled heat / nucleation and growth phenomena) to yield structures similar to the Thixocasting process. Rheocasting or Slurry-On-Demand is in its early stages of development (the first industrial prototype of rheocasting was invented in the late 1990's) and forms the central point of interest in this work. Much research is underway around the globe to understand the controlling mechanism as well as the structure - property relationships in rheocast parts, primarily limited to the hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys (less than 12.6% Si). This work is dedicated in the development of novel methods for the rheocasting of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys (greater than 12.6% Si) and Al based wrought alloys (alloys with Cu, Zn, Mg and Si as alloying elements). The thesis presents the problems associated with microstructure control of hypereutectic Al-Si (primary Si coarsening and accelerated growth) and Al based wrought alloys (dendritic structures and hot tearing) with currently available technologies. Novel processing techniques are presented for the casting of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys and Al based wrought alloys with a combination of industrial trials and a through analysis of the underlying mechanisms.

Castability Control in Metal Casting via Fluidity Measures: Application of Error Analysis to Variations in Fluidity Testing

"Tautologically, castability is a critical requirement in any casting process. The two most important factors impacting castability are the susceptibility of a metal to hot tearing and the degree of casting fluidity a material possesses. This work concerns itself with fluidity of molten metal. Since experimental investigations into casting fluidity began, researchers have sought to maximize fluidity through superheat, mold temperature, alloy chemistry, melt cleanliness, and mold design. Researchers who have examined the published results in the field have remarked on the difficulty of making quantitative comparisons and drawing conclusions from the data. Ragone developed a horizontal vacuum fluidity apparatus and an analytical expression for fluid length to help resolve these issues. This was expanded on by Flemings et al. Still, the comparison of results is complicated by experimental uncertainties and a plurality of experimental procedures. This work seeks to resolve these issues through an analysis of experimental uncertainties present in existing fluidity tests and the development of an improved test and procedure which is very precise, accurate, and reliable. Certain existing tests and software packages have been shown to be unsuitable for quantitative fluidity measurement. Expressions for experimental uncertainty in fluidity testing have been derived. The capability to predict variations in fluidity as a function of alloy chemistry and other variables whose range of values are intrinsic to the economics of the process will help to more accurately determine the superheat needed for successful castings and will in turn lead to a decrease in scrap rates. This will enable metal casters to more reliably cast thin sections, and to reduce cycle time or scrap rate to achieve productivity goals. Superheat was shown to remain the dominant factor in fluidity, but the test allowed investigation of alloy modifications within an alloy specification in this alloy system. Factors known to have negative effects on structural properties were found often to have neutral or positive impacts on fluidity. A deep understanding of variations in fluidity measurements is the next necessary step in a century-long quest to understand how best to make metal castings through the use of fluidity experiments."
