A proposal for improving the meal provisioning process at Canadian Airlines

Catering flights is an important part of an airline's operations. The meal service has a critical impact on customer service quality and represents significant costs. Unfortunately, due to high passenger load variability and minimum production lead-time requirements, it is difficult to get the number of meals to exactly match the passenger count on each flight. The objective of the project is to reduce meal-catering costs due to over-catering while simultaneously improving service level by reducing under-catering. The proposed solution takes the form of a meal bank system. This concept suggests that flights should be systematically under-catered with the possibility of uploading a generic meal to fill in any shortage at the last minute when the final passenger load is known. A thorough investigation of current processes was carried in order to define and recommend process change based on the meal bank approach. The project concludes with a costing analysis of recommended solutions weighing additional investments, cost savings, and service improvement against current performance. Costing analysis results for Vancouver International Airport operations showed that service level could be improved by an approximate reduction of 50 percent in revenue passenger meal shortages. La presente investigación planteó un proyecto de inversión a nivel de prefactibilidad para una empresa de artículos decorativos personalizados y catering temático en la ciudad de Chiclayo, con el objetivo de determinar la rentabilidad del negocio. Para ello, se desarrollaron cinco estudios: un estudio de mercado, que se ejecutó a través de la técnica de la encuesta para determinar el perfil y preferencias del consumidor; un estudio técnico, para determinar la localización y distribución de la planta de trabajo; un estudio legal, para concretar los trámites de constitución formal de la Empresa Crea-Eventos Infantiles E.I.R.L.; un estudio organizacional, para definir la organización interna y procesos de trabajo de la empresa; y finalmente un estudio económico financiero, que definió al proyecto con una inversión total de S/.36,154.05, logrando resultados rentables en la proyección del flujo de caja financiero de los primeros 5 años de funcionamiento, arrojando un valor actual neto igual a S/.22,590.31, que demuestra la factibilidad del proyecto, así como una tasa interna de retorno igual al 49%. La investigación desarrollada fue de tipo cuantitativa descriptiva, ya que presentó resultados a través de la aplicación del instrumento del cuestionario y describió objetivamente la realidad estudiada, que finalmente fue procesada a través del programa Microsoft Word y Microsoft Excel, para lograr exponer al público el presente proyecto de inversión. / Tesis

The influence of catering theory to the dividend policy of corporations in Taiwan

The cash dividend payout ratio in Taiwan had declined slowly in past years, but it suddenly became higher and higher since 1998. The phenomenon gave me the motivation to try to find the reason why the trend of cash dividend payout ratio changed the direction. I first test the relationship between the characters of firms and their cash dividend payout ratios. The results declared that the market-to-book ratio, earning ability and firm size significantly influences the cash dividend payout ratio. Then I tried to test the catering theory to recognize if the change of cash dividend payout ratio trend can attribute to managers¡¦ desire to cater the demand of investors and found catering theory seems capable in explaining the phenomenon. But Hoberg and Prabhala (2007) indicated that if we take the risks into account, the catering theory can not sufficiently explain the change of the trend of cash dividend payout ratio. So I took Tax Integration and the risks which calculated by the methods of Fama and French (2003) into account to prove their perspectives. At last, the results revealed that the influence of catering were not very strong if we consider the risks of firms, but the influence of risks and Tax Integration has significantly great influences.

This paper is built upon the predictions of the catering theory of dividends and examines the interaction effect between catering incentives and corporate ownership structure in a behavioral context with investor´s perceptions for dividends. We intend to evaluate how the ownership structure affects the disposition of companies in Eurozone countries to adjust their payouts to the investors’ sentiments. To achieve this aim, we propose a dividend model that incorporates a variable at a firmlevel proxying for the catering effect. The results from the estimation of the model by using the GMM reveal an interaction effect between catering and ownership variables, particularly the level of insider ownership and the interaction between the first and second largest shareholders, taking into account whether there is collusion or contestability between them. / Este artículo está construido sobre las predicciones de la teoría de catering de dividendos y examina la interacción entre los incentivos para el catering y la estructura corporativa de propiedad, en un contexto conductual, con la percepción de los inversores respecto al reparto de dividendos. Tratamos de evaluar como la estructura de propiedad afecta la disposiciónde las empresas en los países de la zona euro para modificar los pagos según los sentimientos de los inversionistas. Para lograr esto, proponemos un modelo de dividendos que incorpora una variable proxy a nivel defirma para captar el efecto catering. Los resultados de la estimación del modelo usando el GMM revelan un efecto de interacción entre el catering y las variables de propiedad, particularmente en el nivel de participación de los accionistas y la interacción entre los dos principales accionistas, tomando en cuenta la alguna posible colusión o disputa entre ellos. / Este artigo é construído sobre as predições da teoria de catering de dividendos e examina a interação entre os incentivose a estrutura de propiedade em um contexto comportamental com a percepção do investidor nos dividendos. Temos aintenção de avaliar como a estrutura de propriedade afeta a disposição das empresas em países da zona euro para ajustarse us pagamentos aos sentimentos dos investidores. Para atingir este objetivo, propomos um modelo de dividendos que incorpora uma variável ao nível de empresas para aproximar-se o efeito de catering. Os resultados da estimação domodelo usando o GMM revelam um efeito de interação entre as variáveis de catering e de propriedade, especialmente no nível de propriedade e da interação entre o primeiro e o segundo maior acionista, tendo em conta a existência umacolusão ou controvérsia entre eles.
