Performance modelling and evaluation of network on chip under bursty traffic : performance evaluation of communication networks using analytical and simulation models in NOCs with fat tree topology under bursty traffic with virtual channelsIbrahim, Hatem Musbah January 2014 (has links)
Physical constrains of integrated circuits (commonly called chip) in regards to size and finite number of wires, has made the design of System-on-Chip (SoC) more interesting to study in terms of finding better solutions for the complexity of the chip-interconnections. The SoC has hundreds of Processing Elements (PEs), and a single shared bus can no longer be acceptable due to poor scalability with the system size. Networks on Chip (NoC) have been proposed as a solution to mitigate complex on-chip communication problems for complex SoCs. They consists of computational resources in the form of PE cores and switching nodes which allow PEs to communicate with each other. In the design and development of Networks on Chip, performance modelling and analysis has great theoretical and practical importance. This research is devoted to developing efficient and cost-effective analytical tools for the performance analysis and enhancement of NoCs with m-port n-tree topology under bursty traffic. Recent measurement studies have strongly verified that the traffic generated by many real-world applications in communication networks exhibits bursty and self-similar properties in nature and the message destinations are uniformly distributed. NoC's performance is generally affected by different traffic patterns generated by the processing elements. As the first step in the research, a new analytical model is developed to capture the burstiness and self-similarity characteristics of the traffic within NoCs through the use of Markov Modulated Poisson Process. The performance results of the developed model highlight the importance of accurate traffic modelling in the study and performance evaluation of NoCs. Having developed an efficient analytical tool to capture the traffic behaviour with a higher accuracy, in the next step, the research focuses on the effect of topology on the performance of NoCs. Many important challenges still remain as vulnerabilities within the design of NoCs with topology being the most important. Therefore a new analytical model is developed to investigate the performance of NoCs with the m-port n-tree topology under bursty traffic. Even though it is broadly proved in practice that fat-tree topology and its varieties result in lower latency, higher throughput and bandwidth, still most studies on NoCs adopt Mesh, Torus and Spidergon topologies. The results gained from the developed model and advanced simulation experiments significantly show the effect of fat-tree topology in reducing latency and increasing the throughput of NoCs. In order to obtain deeper understanding of NoCs performance attributes and for further improvement, in the final stage of the research, the developed analytical model was extended to consider the use of virtual channels within the architecture of NoCs. Extensive simulation experiments were carried out which show satisfactory improvements in the throughput of NoCs with fat-tree topology and VCs under bursty traffic. The analytical results and those obtained from extensive simulation experiments have shown a good degree of accuracy for predicting the network performance under different design alternatives and various traffic conditions.

Integrated Marketing Communications : A quantitative study of the perceptions of integrated marketing communications in the Swedish marketKreidly, Fikrie, Aden, Abdikadar, Tvrtkovic, Adnan January 2014 (has links)
When planning to implement a marketing tool such as Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) into ones company, marketers need to know what IMC means or is perceived to be in their environment. The definition of IMC is shown in the background chapter of this study and more definitions are stated in the theoretical frame chapter as well. Months of research lead to the conduction of a study, that is to test the perception of IMC in the Swedish market by sampling and sending questionnaires to Swedish marketers. Five Hypotheses were formed to test if each factor has a positive or negative relation with IMC. A questionnaire was formulated that tested all of the five main success factors (customer focus, targeted communication, customer-brand relationship, synergy and communication channels) in relation to IMC and how the Swedish marketers perceived each one of the factor’s connection to IMC. The marketers were chosen due to the fact that they would know most about IMC since it’s within the field of marketing. It was found that Swedish marketers support 2 out of the 5 hypotheses. This means that the results showed that Swedish marketers perceive that there is a positive relationship between both channels of communication and IMC, and customer brand relationship and IMC, while targeted communication, customer focus and synergy were denied to be as positively related to IMC. This study would be of great help to a Swedish company trying to implement IMC because it gives directions to the Swedish perception of it, thereby making it more clear to know exactly what they are implementing, which help them find out in what way they should implement IMC, in order to avoid failures that could be very expensive.

It is in the human nature to communicate and it makes a condition for all types of development. We communicate in different ways, but the most common way is face-to-face. In an organisation, however other forms of channels can be more useful, such as e-mail and other IT-systems. An organisation with a functional and good communication is or will become very successful.</p><p>In this paper, I have chosen to continue to study how communication looks like and works within Habia Cable. I will continue my first study (Inre liv och yttre verklighet – en kommunikationsstudie hos Habia Cable), where I discovered how the communication network looked like. The study used questionnaires where all the respondents had to fill in who they knew, hade contact with or worked with of all of the employees. What I gained from this was that 24% had some form of contact and 61% knew of each other. In this new study, I will try to find out what works and what does not works so good, in order to develop tools the company can use to improve their communication.</p><p>Habia Cable is one of Europe largest manufacture of specialized cable. Their largest customers are found in telecommunications, nuclear, defends and other industries. In Sweden, they are located in two different places, one in Upplands Väsby and one in Söderfors, it is also here where the main manufacturing are done. They have 220 employees and the turn over where 565 MSEK in 2006.</p><p>The purpose of this study where to identify and develop tools, Habia could use to improve their communication. In order to answer this I used following questions:</p><p>• How do the employees understand the communication within Habia?</p><p>• How shall the company convey business specified information?</p><p>• Which communication channels have/can the company use to bring out their information?</p><p>• Which importance does the leader have in the communication process?</p><p>I have used both a quantitative method, with questionnaires and a qualitative method with interviews. I have chosen this because I would like to get as good picture as possible over the how the communication looks like at Habia. 190 persons out of 220 answered the questionnaire. Twelve persons where invited to the interviews, but one person chose not to participate. The gathered data was put together separately, where the questionnaire answers was compiled in diagrams and the interviews in plain text. The analysis was based upon a figure (Figure 4 in page 21), which describes how the communication goes like a spiral through all the different parts.</p><p>The result of this study was that Habia has to work more with the leadership and make sure that the leaders have the conditions needed to run the business further on. One part of this work is to limit the channels used in the organisation and that they are link together in one interface. It is also very important that the whole organisation have performance reviews and that they are taking seriously and performed at least once a year. During these talks, the leader and the employee have the opportunity to check that they work in the same direction and that the organisations goal and the employee’s goal match. By doing this, the employee’s feels more motivated and involved.</p><p>I would like to recommend Habia to re do this study in a couple of years, both this one but also the first one to see whether the communication has changed or not.</p><p>That communication is important was nothing new, but that the word holed so much more was a surprise. If the communication does not work, the organisation will not work – not in the extent it could. My hope is that those who read this paper will get something to think about and to start looking at the communication with somewhat different eyes. Just to acknowledge that the one you are talking to might not understand the way you say something. Your body language might say something else, and you will in this paper discover that the body language stands for much more than the word it self.</p>

Communication strategies of women principals of secondary schoolsThakhathi, Tshilidzi 01 1900 (has links)
This study focuses on the conununication strategies of women principals in secondary schools. It highlights
the role of conununication in management by examining the purpose of conununication, communication
process, barriers to effective communication and the types of communication, which are verbal and nonverbal
communication.
The study, further highlights that communication in management may be affected by the differences in
communication styles of women and men. It further shows that while differences in communicative styles
can be attributed to many factors, socialisation into gender positions is a major factor that leads to gender
communication differences.
Though socialisation is one of the factors shaping communication of men and women, post-structuralists
also argue that children who are socialised are not just passive recipients. During socialisation each person
is active in taking up discourses through which she or he is shaped. The socialisation, starts at home, then
to school and also the community. Children develop sex-appropriate speech in different communities.
A single case study explored the conununication strategies of a woman principal in the Northern Province,
South Africa. Reputational sampling was used for the selection of the participants and site. Data gathering
was done by means of interviews [with the principal and six teachers], observation and document analysis.
Findings suggest that a woman principal's communication is shaped by the context in which she is a
woman, mother, wife, African, educational manager and as an individual with her own unique personality.
Women managers in rural contexts experience cultural barriers to communication as women are not
expected to talk much and should appear to know little in the presence of men. Women are also not
supposed to conununicate non-verbally by keeping eye contact, using more space and using facial
expression. In this study, a woman manager emerges as a good communicator who overcomes cultural
barriers by even practicing what is not traditionally acceptable.
The woman principal prefers personal encounters as channels of communication and as an African, she
overcomes language barriers by using mother-tongue when speaking with staff and students. In general.
this study found that the woman principal preferred human-oriented communication strategies, and
endeavoured to conquer cultural barriers to communication. / Educational Leadership and Management / D.Ed. (Educational Management)

Previous issue date: 2014-05-29 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / The birth models of care are discussed, in the light of classical and contemporary social
science theoretical background, emphasizing the humanistic model. The double spiral of the
sociology of absences and the sociology of emergences is detailed, being based, on one hand,
on the translation of experiences of knowledge, and, on the other, on the translation of
experiences of information and communication, by revealing the movement articulated by
Brazilian women on blogs that defend and bring into light initiatives aiming to recover natural
and humanized birth. A cartography of the thematic ideas in birth literature is produced,
resulting in the elaboration of a synthetic map on obstetric models of care in contemporaneity,
pointing out the consequences of the obstetric model that has become hegemonic in
contemporary societies, and comparing that model to others that work more efficaciously to
mothers and babies. A symbolic cartography of the activism for humanizing birth on the
Brazilian blogosphere is configured by the elaboration of an analytical map synthetizing the
main mottos defended by the movement: Normal humanized birth; Against obstetrical
violence; and Planned home birth. The superposition of the obstetric models of care s map
and the rebirth of birth s analytical map indicates it is necessary to reinforce three main
measures in order to make a paradigmatic turn in contemporary birth models of care possible:
pave the way for the humanistic care of assistance in normal birth, by defending and
highlighting practices and professionals that act in compliance with evidence based medicine,
respecting the physiology of birth; denaturalize obstetric violence, by showing how routine
procedures and interventions can be means of aggression, jeopardizing the autonomy, the
protagonism and the respect towards women; and motivate initiatives of planned home birth,
the best place for the occurrence of holistic experiences of birth. It is concluded that Internet
tools have allowed a pioneer mobilization in respecting women s reproductive rights in Brazil
and that the potential of the crowd s biopower that resides on the blogosphere can turn blogs
into a hegemonic alternative way to reach more democratic forms of social organization. In
that condition of being virtually hegemonic in contesting the established power, these blogs
can be understood, therefore, as potentially great contra-hegemonic channels for the rebirth of
birth and for the reinvention of social emancipation, as their author s articulate and organize
themselves to strive against the waste of experience, trying to create reciprocal intelligibility
movimento: Parto normal humanizado; Contra a viol?ncia obst?trica; e Parto Domiciliar
Planejado (PDP).

Personalintern Kommunikation : En kartläggning av formella och informella strukturer vid hematologisk slutenvård / Interpersonal Communication : Mapping formal and informal structures within haematological inpatient careWestin, Kim January 2015 (has links)
The recent technological development within information technology has affected the structure of organisations and the organisation of work. In health care, and for several reasons, the need for communication audits has thus been highlighted. Patient safety may be risked by mistakes linked to deficiencies in information transfer. Often are hierarchical structures, unclear roles and gaps in information flows suggested causes. On the other hand, the health care sector often is considered as one of society's most complex knowledge organizations, characterized by intense information flows with traits linked to strong professions. Communication audits are accomplished with the objective to identify causes of ineffective communication, lack of explicit communication processes, to suggest improvements and provide management and staff with more objective descriptions of roles and links. The research field has for a while been dominated by large-‐scale surveys and resent studies has pointed at the need for studies of daily communication environments at site of organizations. This is such a study, carried through at a department for inpatient care at the University Hospital Karolinska, located in Huddinge, Stockholm. In 2012, the studied department relocated into new facilities and completed a small restructuring of its organization, affecting roles and channels of communication. The perception of the new organization was inefficiency, both in time and difficulties to overview the structure. The purpose of this thesis has therefore been to discuss and highlight how to clarify formal structure of the internal communication among staff based on parameters such as roles and channels of communication. The study maps today's formal structure, which is the expected exchange of information as described in job descriptions and work policies and compares this with developed informal structures based on how employees prefer to exchange information. A mix of data collection methods is used. An analysis is conducted were the organization's communication network as perceived as exchange of information between the employees is visualised. The results showed differences between the formal structure and the informal structure that could be used to highlight aspects of how the identified differences could be used to clarify the formal structure. The study points at six areas were the formal structure may be elucidated; more documented communicative responsibilities and procedures, a strengthening of communication within working groups rather than within professions, a definition of the chief physician and the assistant physicians' communicative roles, an increased continuity in key roles for communication, a review of the physical structure's impact on communication and finally, create conditions for fast communication with information technology.
