Previous issue date: 2014-02-03 / This paper aims at analyzing socio-cultural relations prevailing inside father Ibiapina s
Charity Houses, which contributed to his social work emphasizing the figure of Mary
as developed by Classical Mariology. In this sense, Reception History was an important
tool in this analysis, along with a dialogue with some distinguished authors
who privilege this gender in their works. A review of the works of Bourdieu, Geertz,
Berger, and Foucault among other social thinkers was necessary to accomplish a
more vivid portrait of the social interactions experienced in the research, as well as
the religious foundation of their relations, considering that their ideas allowed us to
make an in-depth study of the social constructions that prevail in them. This kind of
reflection let a large result concerning father Ibiana s letters, the sisters of charity
ones, the statute ruling the Charity Houses, the poems of the charity sisters published
in the Voz da Religião no Cariri newspaper, and the moral maxima written
down by father Ibiapina. All considered, we are sure that these core issues granted a
better comprehension of what happens among the members of the group and between
them and their counterparts.

Advancing Upstream: Philanthropy's Aspirations for Social JusticeJanuary 2011 (has links)
abstract: This study explores how grantmakers conceptualize their work with respect to issues of social justice. It seeks to answer two primary questions: What role, if any, does the philanthropic community ascribe to itself in not just ameliorating but helping solve our greatest social challenges? And if philanthropy does see itself as an agent of change, what are the barriers that limit its potential? After painting a portrait of contemporary American philanthropy, this paper applies Iris Marion Young's critique of distributive justice to philanthropy's dilemma between downstream charitable aid and upstream structural change. The thesis then turns to analysis of semi-structured interviews with eighteen of Arizona's foundation leaders to assess whether and how state-level philanthropic leaders see their work vis-á -vis social justice, and understand how external factors limit philanthropy's ability to effect maximum social change. Participants express a desire to engage in genuinely meaningful philanthropy which does more than just maintain the status quo, but identify multiple constraints, including legal barriers to fully utilizing advocacy as a tool, governmental infringement on philanthropic autonomy, the channeling of philanthropic resources toward basic needs as a result of the recession, and a grantmaking orientation that prioritizes short term programs that yield swift, measurable results as opposed to longer term efforts. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Music-making in the English parish church from the 1760s to 1860s, with particular reference to HertfordshireKilbey, Margaret January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on a previously unexplored aspect of music-making in the English parish church during the 1760s to 1860s, namely its local development in response to inter-related episcopal, elite, clerical and economic influences. The historiography suggests ineffectual episcopal leadership and little gentry engagement with parochial church music-making during this period. By contrast, this study presents evidence of their influence, particularly during the late eighteenth to early nineteenth centuries. Elite support for Sunday and charity schools was allied with a desire to improve congregational psalmody, and church organs and barrel-organs were given with this objective in mind. Gentry involvement with amateur military bands of music also influenced the instrumentation of choir-bands. These actions were mirrored by those further down the social scale, and formed part of a complex pattern of support for church music-making. This dissertation argues that methods adopted to improve congregational singing in one generation were reviled in the next. The suggestion that teaching charity school children to sing would result in a congregation of singing adults became a recurring theme, yet time and again it met with little success. Nineteenth-century reform of church music-making has often been presented as a clear-cut progression, with the replacement of choir-bands by a barrel-organ or harmonium, but this dissertation argues that these phases were sometimes parallel rather than sequential, with no inevitable outcome. Furthermore, new evidence reveals that nineteenth-century church rate disputes had a profound effect on church music-making, an area of research neglected in modern literature. Lack of available seating became a significant problem in parish churches owing to the often compulsory attendance of schoolchildren, which opens up another new area of research. This dissertation argues that attempts to reform music-making contributed to alterations in the church fabric long before ecclesiological reorderings, and had long-lasting repercussions.

Organizační kultura Diecézní charity České Budějovice optikou svých sociálních pracovnic / Professional values of social workers in the Diocesan Caritas Czech Budejovice.SMOLÍKOVÁ, Lucie January 2018 (has links)
The thesis deals with the organization structure of the Diocese Charity in České Budějovice (DCH ČB) as viewed through the eyes of social workers who are involved in the projects which DCH ČB arches over. In the introductory part of the thesis there is a description of the contemporary state of social work and the position of social workers in our post-modern society where social workers prefer to work in smaller communities where they can more easily adapt and co-form the rules for the organization and share ideas with people who have similar attitude to social work and how to control and carry it out the best. In connection with the outcome of the study there is a more detailed description of the organization structure of the DCH ČB which was set up according to Scheiner's formation of organization structures. In accordance with the organization structure there is a contemplation whether the DCH ČB does not have a tendency to incline towards ideological management without a possibility for the social workers to co-form the rules and have some autonomy in the projects of the DCH ČB, while the DCH ČB is in a position of an Ideological Hegemon.

Previous issue date: 2017 / The Institution of the Holy House of Mercy was born in Portugal in the fifteenth century, initially founded by lay people and a Trinitarian friar, aimed at providing material and spiritual help to those in need. Later during the Portuguese colonization in Brazil, the model of the Santa Casa brotherhood was adopted as an instrument of diffusion of the power of Portugal in relation to Brazil. These institutions were governed by the Catholic church that received funds for the maintenance of hospitals and the Misericórdias. Therefore, with this thesis we propose to discuss the ideology and educational model of the institution of Santa Casa de Misericórdia in Brazil, especially highlighting Misericórdia de Fortaleza. After all, while this model of educational welfare institution was implanted in Brazil during the colonial period, Misericórdia de Fortaleza was founded during the imperial period (1861), and followed educational paths of assistance different from the models implanted during the colonial period. Taking into account that in the second half of the nineteenth century, Ceará was hit by droughts and epidemics that increased social deprivation, it becomes necessary to understand the educational action promoted by this institution on the body and soul of the inhabitants in the city of Fortaleza-CE. Finally, in this thesis we propose to analyze the process of forming a hospital medical care mentality, in the city of Fortaleza, in the passage from the nineteenth century to the twentieth century, seeking to understand how the Holy House of Mercy in Fortaleza combined the charity present in the constitution of this Institution with the medical knowledge in force during the study period. We call attention to the process of medicalization, which was established in Santa Casa de Misericórdia, thus creating a relationship between charity and medical practice. To that end, we analyze the specificities of hospital care in Ceará, as well as the indications of medical care with the underprivileged, focusing on the city of Fortaleza, in the final period of the Empire and the first years of the Republic. Finally, the article highlights the role of charity in the training course of hospital care in Ceará.
