Children's Perceptions of Gender as Studied Through Pronoun Use

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: Gendered language has been a topic of study for centuries. The most recent efforts to promote inclusive language have been championed by parents, teachers, and social reformers over the last thirty years. Replicating in part a research study that was done over thirty years ago, this study examines what effects have taken place in children's perceptions of male and female roles in regards to specific activities and occupations and how their perceptions compare to the current work force, what role children's literature has played in these changes, and what children's natural speech in describing personified animals can tell us about their subconscious gender labeling. The results were remarkable in two ways: native language evidently exudes little emphasis on pronoun choice, and children are more readily acceptable of gender equality than that portrayed in either Caldecott winning children's books or real life as seen through current labor statistics. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Curriculum and Instruction 2011

Narrativas de morte na literatura e no cinema para crianças: Angela Lago e Tim Burton / Death of narrative in literature and cinema for children: Angela Lake and Tim Burton

Marcelita Negrão Trindade Vilela 30 September 2015 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyze how the theme of death is addressed in production for children and youth; for both our work proposes the reading of two works from different narrative fields: a book and a movie. To perform this exercise, we take for instrumental foundations of Literature Comparative Studies, interdisciplinary perspective that operates the comparison and dialogue that can be established between different literatures, literature and other arts and literature and other knowledge. The relationships established will be used between literature and other arts, such as cinema, to focus as death is being treated in literary and filmic narrative. So start from the concept of literature compared, intertextuality and dialogism, fundamental to establish comparative relations between the two narratives, demonstrating how the film\'s own resources as well as their interrelationship codes and languages, contribute to the construction of meaning. The theme has proved useful for research work, given that death is an ingredient of human life, so the corpus of choice promoted the study of the division into two phases: the presentation of death in Western culture and the representation of death in literary and filmic narratives for children and youth. The corpus of the research is composed of works from death! A pagan tale of Christian folklore (1992), children\'s book written by Angela Lago and The Corpse Bride (2005), a film produced by Tim Burton.

January 2015 (has links)
The aim is also mapping the researcher's route in the use of the social supports reading at situations that it is given as language. The questions that guided this research looking for the possibility of using ebooks in schools are the followings: Is it possible for the school to appropriate the tablet usage to literary reading in school? What are the routes to be followed by the student and the teacher? The theoretical references of this research were authors such as Vygotski, Bakhtin, Foucambert, Arena and Bajard. The investigation's methodology was the research-action, using systematic observation records of the subjects-children, images and voice, and interview. The researcher exercised double role, as researcher and mediator. By investigating and mapping the paths taken by children in building their own virtual digital library, it was also observed the own way of organization of the researcher-mediator in the procedures for teaching the reading act. The data was produced, organized and analysed by thematic groups in an attempt of understanding the digital literary text reader's behaviour in virtual libraries, and the possibilities of use by children of e-books of children's literature in the classroom's everyday as social practices. The research results confirm the usefulness of tablet usage for the child organize a virtual digital library and perform the reading of digital works that lead to the construction of literary appreciation by students, as well as greater autonomy in search of texts. The otherness was also considered as playing an essential role in the construction of an environment which favours the expansion of culture and contributes, with the reading act, for the emancipation of students. / Mestre

To have a hole in one's heart and a father in the pocket : An investigation on grieving children in children’s literature

Rönnqvist Kulla, Sofia January 2018 (has links)
As a teacher, I will come in contact with different students with different prior knowledge and experience. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate how the grief after losing a parent is made out in four children's books, and to compare how or when these depictions correspond to the research on child grief management and processing. This to see how it can be used in my future profession. The theoretical starting points were Vygotsky's theories of learning as well as previous research in the topics of grief management in children and children's literature on the subject of death. The method used for this study was a qualitative study of documents, more particularly a text analysis on four separate children's books. In the result the importance of reading with the children is discovered, but also the importance of talking with them about difficult subjects for them to grow up and being able to handle future difficulties.

January 2012 (has links)
This research has aimed to investigate how the communicative action is established in a process of continuing formation that looks foward to recognize the possibilities of using Children Literature in Natural Sciences classes in the early years of Elementary School. This formation process, realized with teachers from Colégio de Aplicação João XXIII/UFJF, was developed from the perspective of communicative rationality and identified the interactive acts and established speech acts, showing, as a synthesis of this process, the dialogical course realized. The theory of communicative action by Jürgen Habermas served as theoretical basis, through the conception of language as an emancipatory process, which is translated in different discursive marks established in interactive and dialogical processes. The data was collected and analyzed through interviews (initial and final) performed individually and the establishment of a Formation Groupl, a space where teachers sought, initiality, to articulate the theoretical basis offered to the practice in the classroom, under a critical and reflexive eye, and subsequently they developed, implemented and analyzed science lessons from the use of Children Literature, having the curriculum of the school as a guide to the theme to be developed. As a result of this work, we could recognize how the teacher, to stand on the subject matter, establishes interactions and speeches in a dialogical course. We have also found out, through the speech of teachers, the richness of the proposals to use Children literature in science classes, developed in collective process. We have concluded, by the end of this research, that continued formation actions from this nature can contribute to the teacher autonomy and emancipation from the analysis and critical reconstruction of the teaching practice / Doutor

An examination of the suitability of some contemporary South African fiction for readers in the post-developmental reading stage

Cole, Lorna January 1992 (has links)
Adverse criticism regarding the quantity and quality of children's books in South Africa appear in such respected sources as The Oxford Companion to Children's Literature and The Companion to South African English Literature, the authors of which are of the opinion that South African children are dependent solely upon Eurocentric literature for their reading material. In recent years however, local publishers have attempted to redress this imbalance by offering prizes for unpublished works. These prizes have acted as incentives for aspiring writers, many of whom have had novels published specifically for children in the post-developmental reading stage. This study critically examines some of these prizewinning works of fantasy and contemporary realism, in an effort to gauge their literary worth within the context of accepted criteria for judging children's literature. Accolades from adults are not however a guarantee that the prizewinning books will be received with equal acclaim by the children for whom they are written. For this reason, five children in the post-developmental reading stage were asked to pass their opinions and non-literary judgments on the books. Although the critical evaluation of the indigenous works proves them to be eminently worthy of the prizes which they received on publication, the children did not rate them as highly as certain imported works. The works of fantasy by Marguerite Poland rated poorly in terms of their popularity despite the fact that the children said that in a non-circumscribed context, they choose fantasy in preference to contemporary realism. Within the context of the indigenous literature which they read for this study though, they preferred the works of contemporary realism as they were able to identify with particular aspects of the novels. Indigenous literature for children in the post-developmental reading stage is a comparatively new phenomenon which needs to be nurtured if it is to attain any lasting status. The onus rests upon the teachers of literature and librarians to introduce the literature and make the books more accessible to young readers. Publishers need perhaps to engage the views and opinions of the audience for whom the books are written in an effort to publish books which, without in any way detracting from their literary worth, will deal with subjects favoured by young readers.

The girls' school story : a re-reading

Sneddon, Sarah J. January 1998 (has links)
The very mention of the genre of the 'girls' school story' tends to provoke sniggers. Critics, teachers and librarians have combined throughout the century to attack a genre which encourages loyalty, hard work, team spirit, cleanliness and godliness. This dissertation asks why this attack took place and suggests one possible answer - the girls' school story was a radical and therefore feared genre. The thesis provides a brief history of the genre with reference to its connections with the Victorian novel and its peculiarly British status. Through examination of reading surveys, newspapers and early critical works it establishes both the popularity of the genre amongst its intended audience and the vitriolic nature of the attack against it. Biographical information about the writers of the school story begins to answer why the establishment may have been afraid of the influence of the purveyors of girls' school stories. By discussing their depiction of education, religion, women's roles and war the dissertation shows in what respects the genre can be seen as radical and shows how the increasing conventionality of the genre coincided with its decline in vigour and popularity. The influence of the oeuvre is then revealed in the discussion of its effects on adult literature.

Pires, Suyan Maria Ferreira January 2009 (has links)
This doctoral thesis, which adopts as its central reference the theories developed in the field of Gender Studies and Cultural Studies seeks to investigate how romantic relationships are represented in contemporary children's literature texts, edited from the 90's decade of the 20th century until the year of 2007. To do this analysis, seventeen books have been selected, taking into account the various dates of publishing, authors and editors in an attempt to escape the traditional analysis of the already so studied classic stories. Considering that love and marriage are being jeopardized in our society, as new family patterns, or even other possibilities on how to experience love emerge, my research problem is focused on discussing how children's literature has been presenting these themes, such as: how does romantic love and the materialization of this feeling, through the relationships that are established based upon it, have been represented in children's literature books? In which way are gender relationships depicted in these books? How is marriage seen in connection with love relationships? The results show that in most of the children's literary pieces the loving feeling still shows in association with the idea of marriage; the woman is responsible for raising the children; some stories present romantic love linked with pain and the difficulty of conquest. The characteristics of love at first sight are also persistent, as is the empowerment of this feeling in order to transform the other person. Three pieces, among the seventeen that were analyzed, show the preference of the single status and the divorce as a possibility to end a romantic relationship.
