Knights, Puritans, and Jesus: Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, Stonewall Jackson, and the archetypes of American masculinity

Strawbridge, Wilm K 30 April 2011 (has links) (PDF)
I interpret Civil War romanticism by looking at well-known archetypal characters such as the knight, the Puritan, and the Christ figure. I argue that sectional reunion occurred, in part, because Americans shared a common celebration of the Christian/chivalrous hero expressed through stories about the lives and personalities of leading figures of the Civil War. Western traditions like Christianity and its medieval warrior code, chivalry, conditioned Americans to seek heroes who conformed to a certain pattern that resembled the knightly ideal. Chivalry did not crowd-out other forms of masculine behavior, but during the nineteenth century, the British century, Americans had not yet created a man in their own image. That would come later with the twentieth century’s most favored man: the cowboy. Americans created Robert E. Lee as a knight figure resembling Western heroes such as King Arthur. Unlike the more controversial Confederate notables Stonewall Jackson and Jefferson Davis, the Lee figure offered Americans the genteel, Christ-like, hero who could be made to represent all of white America. Davis was too defiantly unreconstructed to ever affect much sectional agreement, and Jackson simply could not be made to fit the chivalrous pattern. Thus, Lee allowed southerners to identify themselves as uniquely chivalrous and honorable compared to the modern North. At the same time, the Lee figure provided northerners the opportunity to romanticize a charming, orderly, Old South while rejecting the violent, narrow-minded, states' rights South best symbolized by Davis. I prefer to interpret commentary about the Civil War as storytelling and do not use terms such as the Lost Cause or Civil War memory. High-ranking officers, the common solider, and those who never participated in the Civil War each told stories about it. Due to the large number of stories told, certain common themes became evident in American interpretations of the Civil War era. Common stories include: Lee at Appomattox, Jackson's unmerciful marches against Union forces, and Davis (almost) eluding capture dressed as a woman. Taken together the sub-stories reveal much about the grand narrative of the Civil War, and how Americans, though succeeding to a great extent, failed to completely reunite.

Knightly Gentlemen: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and His Historical Novels

Durrer, Rebecca A. (Rebecca Ann) 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis analyzes Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's contribution to the revival of chivalric ideals in late Victorian England. The primary sources of this study are Doyle's historical novels and the secondary sources address the different aspects of the revival of the chivalric ideals. The first two chapters introduce Doyle's historical novels, and the final four chapters define the revival, the class and gender issues surrounding the revival, and the illustration of these in Doyle's novels. The conclusion of the thesis asserts that Doyle supported the revival of chivalric ideals, and the revival attempted to maintain, in the late nineteenth century, the traditional class and gender structure of the Middle Ages.

Cavalaria e picaresca no romance D\' A Pedra do Reino de Ariano Suassuna / Chivabric and picaresque in Ariano Suassena\'s novel D\' A Pedra do Reino

Cardoso, Maria Inês Pinheiro 25 February 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to show that in the conception of the novel Romance dA Pedra do Reino e o príncipe do sangue do vai-e-volta by the Brazilian writer Ariano Suassuna, the chivalry books and the picaresque novel, two narrative subgenres of Hispanic origin, stand out as constitutive elements. Strongly attached to a well defined notion of time and space, they go through adaptations to suit adequately the environment of the Romance dA Pedra do Reino. The author includes in his narrative an extensive collection of Northeast-centered popular cultural manifestations (in whose hybrid characteristics are stressed out Iberian traits) as catalyst and amalgam of these elements. The comparative analysis is used with the aim of identifying the traits of the gender models considered and the adaptable mechanisms employed by the author.

The citizen-officer ideal: a historical and literary inquiry

DeBuse, Mark R. 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / Due to their unique expertise, military officers have always held a special position within Western society. Yet, while individuals who have demonstrated knowledge of warfare and prowess in battle have long been held in high regard by society and the members of their profession, it is those who have also demonstrated the ideals of citizenship and chivalry who serve as the icons for thoughtful military officers. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the evolution of the citizen-officer ideal- through a close study of historical and literary case studies. By establishing a common theme or values among completely separate exemplars of this ideal, a continuum joining Odysseus, Cincinnatus, Beowulf, and Gawain to Washington, Chamberlain, and Marshall might eventually be carried forward to the present and the modern military officer. Specific focus is given to the roles that classical notions of citizenship and the Code of Chivalry have played in shaping the ethos of the American officer. / Lieutenant, United States Navy

Hästtjejen och Konststudenten : En kritisk diskursanalys av styckmördare i två svenska lokaltidningar och Expressen. / The horse girl and the art student : A critical discourse analysis of three Swedish newspapers coverage of two murders

Karlsson, Emil, Larsson Sposito, Miriam January 2019 (has links)
This study was conducted with the motive to analyze and demonstrate the differences and similarities of three Swedish newspapers’ coverage about two different murders. The main focus of the study was to compare and contrast the newspapers’ descriptions of one male and one female murderer. Through the study we also aimed to answer the question “Is it possible to apply the Chivalry Hypothesis in the newspapers descriptions of the murderers?” The Chivalry Hypothesis proclaims that women get treated in a more lenient way than men in the judicial system of America. A study from 2006 discovered that a specific newspaper in USA did in fact not treat criminal women in a more lenient way than criminal men. Our most important theoretical standpoints was that of discourse; as discourse analysis in the way Norman Fairclough preferred it was the method that was used. As we compared differences between the sexes gender studies was also a major theoretical part of the study. The result of our empirical analysis showed that a man and a woman which had committed similar murders during the same time period was partially treated and described different from each other in the articles. The result also showed partial support for the thesis about the Chivalry Hypothesis being translatable to Swedish news-press.

Könstillhörighet och fängelsestrafflängd i en svensk kontext : Relationen mellan könstillhörighet och domar för grov misshandel

Astby Röding, Sebastian, Nilsson, Emil, Ruus, Kristo January 2020 (has links)
The present study aimed to examine how the gender of perpetrators and victims of aggravated assault relates to the length of prison sentences. Data was collected to compare male and female perpetrators and victims from sentences where aggravated assault was the primary offense, after the change in legislation the first of July 2017. A total of 100 cases were included in the analysis with 61 male and 39 female perpetrators. In summary the result indicated that the length of the prison sentence did not relate to the gender of perpetrators or victims when examined separately. However, a significant result was found between perpetrator and victim gender constitution and the length of sentences. The difference was only found between the group with female perpetrators and male victims and the group with female perpetrators and female victims. The effect did not remain when stratifications were made regarding additional crimes besides aggravated assault affecting sentencing length and for prior convictions. The results are discussed in view of prior research, Focal concerns and Chivalry/Paternalism theory, with focus on aggravated assault as a gender normative crime together with the methodological limitations of the current study.
