Michael Cassidy and Albert Nolan both develop their understanding of evangelism and social
action within the context of the struggle for a democratic South Africa. This understanding is
determined by their own personal contexts and their social analysis of the South African
situation. Within these contexts they develop their views of sin and salvation. These underlying
issues, contexts and analyses are crucial to and part of their understanding of the relationship
between evangelism and social action.
This thesis sets out to consider the relationship between evangelism and social action in their
theologies by considering the underlying issues that determine this relationship, before finally
defining the exact nature ofthis relationship. It considers each theology individually first as each
has developed over time in context and needs to be seen as a unified whole as it relates to the .
issue of the relationship between evangelism and social action. It then compares their views with
each other with insights from other views.
Michael Cassidy and Albert Nolan both see sin and hence salvation as personal and social, but
Nolan understands these concepts as primarily social. Hence his understanding ofevangelism and
social action expressed in evangelization is primarily social. It sees them relating in
evangelization in an integrated, holistic way. However, in practice his emphasis on the need to
take sides in the struggle and on salvation as primarily in and through the struggle leads to
salvation becoming sometimes indistinguishable from human liberation. Thus evangelization also
sometimes becomes indistinguishable from the struggle. Cassidy sees these concepts as firstly
spiritual and then social and this determines his understanding of the relationship between
evangelism and social action. He emphasises these as transforming every level of human
relationships, but starting with a right relationship with God.
Cassidy achieves a more balanced Evangelical view of partnership in mission but with an
emphasis on evangelism and Nolan a somewhat more holistic liberationist theological view of
an integrated relationship between evangelism and social action in evangelization but with an

The impact of religious conversion on cultural identity is a study of conversion story
of South African Indian Anglican Christians rooted in the oppressive history of

This study defends the religious conversions and highlights the impact it has made on
cultural identity of converts from social, economic, psychological and spiritual
perspectives.
While highlighting the positive impact of religious conversion on cultural identity this
study has also pointed out some ambiguities attached to this process.
This study looks into the possibilities of Native and Indian Christians working
together to create a healing culture in South Africa. An attempt is made to point out
the interrelatedness of the experiences of suffering of Native Christians and Indian
Christians from indentured backgrounds in South Africa.
This study does not cover disparity issues between native Africans and the Indian
Community in South Africa. However, an attempt is made to encourage Indian
Christians in South Africa to connect with the pain and pathos of poor communities in
South Africa. This study encourages the Indian Christians hi South Africa to read
Dalit theology and get involved with Black theologians in formulating appropriate
mission praxis for their mission and ministry in post apartheid South Africa.
This study concludes on a positive note and hope based on my eight years of ministry
in Lenasia. During my ministry I had experienced that South African Anglican Indian
Christians and native Christians have the developing ability and capacity to become a
spiritual resource in building a transformed and transforming society in South Africa.
I could see in them a reconciled 'wounded healers' and for me this is a powerful
impact of religious conversion on their cultural identity, "Victims' now have the

This thesis is an attempt to reopen the debate on the whole question of inculturation in Southern Africa especially in light of the fact that we are now in a multi-lingual and multi-religious state. It is an attempt to rehighlight the plight of the spirituality of the amaXhosa people over the last century when missionary and imperial onslaught relegated it to the doldrums. This plunged the amaXhosa in a crisis that has left them directionless, to put it mildly. This is said because the total onslaught destroyed their self-respect and their identity and begs the question as to whether their acceptability to God was contingent on renouncing their culture especially the hidden presences - Qamata, the living-dead and the notion of evil spirits. It is precisely because of these misconceptions regarding African culture and spirituality that the thesis has a strong expository and apologetic bias primarily aimed to address, and put into proper perspective, the significance of the Supreme Being, the living-dead and the evil spirits in African culture. The issues are discussed within the broader socio-historical context. The thesis is basically comparative in that it uses Celtic spirituality and the approach of the early Celtic church to the question of inculturation as its point of departure and as a foil against which the preposterous actions of the church in Africa should be seen. This comparative element is also reflected in the unmistakable `dichotomy’ of Western religion and African spirituality, or better still, lack of spirituality, that was so fervently maintained by the missionaries and the colonialists alike. It is for this reason that I concur with Chidester (1996:xiv) that `the study of religion must find itself, once again, on the frontier’. The study is informed by this approach right through. It should be stressed, from the outset, that the idea is not comparison in order to satisfy our curiosity, nor is it comparison in order to try to authenticate and vindicate the beleaguered African culture. The central idea of the study is to expose the absurdity of the policies of the past century in this regard. The myth of the pure blooded Christianity is confronted, if not exploded. Several examples of both inculturation and continuities between Christianity and other faiths such as the Jewish founding faith are given. The subtheme of cultural domination subtly spans the whole study culminating in Chapter Four where the blacks begin to appropriate some of the Christian symbols and the whites also begin to assimilate African concepts such as ubuntu.

Christian-Muslim relations have not always been good and especially the topic of 'conversion' has often caused conflict between the members of the two faiths. Additional problems such as the
apartheid era has caused many Christians, especially Africans, to question their faith and turn their back on Christianity by converting to Islam. There are other areas which have caused conflict in the relations such as mistrust, misinformation and discrimination. In South
Africa's religiously pluralistic society people convert from Christianity to Islam, and vice versa, from a variety of motives.
This study first discusses various Christian missiological debates on understandings of conversion and then surveys psychological approaches to the motivational structures of 'decision-making'. The heart of the study is the presentation and analysis of the conversion
narratives of 20 converts (10 from Islam to Christianity and 10 from Christianity to Islam).
These narratives are analysed in terms of five key conversion motives, as a result of which various patterns of conversion motives emerge.
In church practice and missiology, conversion is often understood only in one direction (towards Christianity) and with only one valid motive, namely a strictly religious one. This study reveals, however, that such a view is inadequate. Conversion should rather be understood as a two-way movement and based on combinations of various motives. This
study concludes with the presentation of a holistic missiological understanding of conversion which applies more adequately to the South African context. Black Theology and the struggle for economic justice in the democratic South AfricaMethula, Dumisani Welcome 01 1900 (has links)
This study sets out to contribute to the expansive development of Systematic Theology and Black Theology, particularly in the struggle for economic justice in the democratic South Africa. The liberation of black people in South Africa and across the globe is the substantive reason for Black Theologies‘ existence and expression. The study‘s reflections on economic justice and Black Theology as sites of the intellectual focus and analysis is central to understanding the conditions of existence for the majority of South Africa‘s citizens, as well as understanding whether the fullness of life based on dignity and freedom as articulated in biblical witness, particularly John 10:10 is manifest for black people in South Africa. The study also seeks to identify, describe, analyse and understand the emancipatory theories and praxis, which entail a plethora of efforts they undertake to liberate themselves. Understanding and engendering the nexus of social practice and theological insights in the articulation of Black Theology as a particular expression of systematic theology, and drawing attention to the ethical foundations undergirding Black Theology, are important in demonstrating Black Theology‘s role and task as a multi-disciplinary discipline which encompass and engender dialogue within and between theory and praxis, and theology and ethics. This study thus suggests that since the locus of Black Theology and spirituality is embedded in the life, (ecclesial and missional) work (koinonia) and preaching (kerygma) of black churches, they have the requisite responsibility to engage in the efforts (spiritual and theological) in the struggle to finding solutions to the triple crises of unemployment, inequality and poverty which ravage the quality and dignity of life of the majority black people in post-apartheid South Africa. This study therefore concludes by asserting that, there are a variety of viable options and criteria relevant for facilitating economic justice in South Africa. These strategies include transformational distribution of land to the majority of South Africans, the implementation of heterodox economic policies which engender market and social justice values in the distribution of economic goods to all citizens. It also entails prioritization of the social justice agenda in economic planning and economic practice. In theological language, economic justice must involve the restoration of the dignity and the wellbeing of the majority of South Africans, who remain poor, marginalised and disillusioned. It also entails promoting justice as a central principle in correcting the remnants of apartheid injustices, which limit transformational justice which enables and facilitates equality, freedom and economic justice for all South African citizens. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / M. Prophetic theology in the Kairos tradition : a pentecostal and reformed perspective in black liberation theology in South AfricaMorris, Allen William 31 October 2019 (has links)
This study focused on the ‘silence of the prophets’ in the post-apartheid era. It
sought to understand why the prophets, who spoke out so vehemently against
the injustices of apartheid, did not speak out against the injustices of the
government after 1994 even when it became blatantly apparent that corruption
was beginning to unfold on various levels, especially with the introduction of the
so-called Arms Deal. Accordingly, the study singles out Drs Allan Boesak and
Frank Chikane who were among the fiercest opponents of the apartheid regime
before 1994.
The study traced the impact of the ideological forces that influenced Boesak and
Chikane’s ideological thinking from the early Slave Religion, Black Theology in
the USA and Liberation Theology in Latin America. Black Theology and Black
Consciousness first made their appearance in South Africa in the 1970s, with
Boesak and Chikane, among others, as early advocates of these movements.
In 1983, Boesak and Chikane took part in the launch of the United Democratic
Front (UDF) in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town. This movement became the voice of
the voiceless in an era when the members of the African National Congress
(ANC) and Pan African Congress (PAC) had been sent into exile. It also signalled
a more inclusive and reconciliatory shift in Boesak and Chikane’s Ideological
thinking. Whereas Black Consciousness sought to exclude white people from
participating in the struggle for liberation, the UDF united all under one banner
without consideration for colour, race, religion or creed. After the advent of liberation in South Africa in 1994, it became increasingly
obvious that corruption was infiltrating many levels of the new government. But
the prophets were silent. Why were they silent?
The study presents an analysis of the possible reasons for this silence based on
interviews with Boesak and Chikane as role players and draws conclusions
based on their writings both before and after 1994. Overall, the study concluded
that they were silent because they had become part of the new political structures
that had taken over power.
To sum up, the study demonstrates the irony of prophetic oscillation and
concludes that no prophet is a prophet for all times. Thus, as a new democracy
unfolds in South Africa, the situation demands new prophets with a new

Translated title in English supplied / Die hoofdoel van die verhandeling is om die fundamentele aanspraak van die Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk aan te spreek dat sy belydenisskrifte, met spesifieke verwysing na daardie leerstellings wat met die vraag oor die ontstaan van die mensdom en die oorsprong van sonde handel en wat in 1619 deur die Sinode van Dordrecht aanvaar is, waar is. Hierdie leerstellings word (teologies) as waarhede voorgehou dat dit op die Bybel as die Woord van God gegrond is.
Die vertrekpunt van die verhandeling is dat die betrokke leerstellings vanuit ’n toepaslike historiese konteks benader moet word wanneer die vraag van hulle geldigheid aangespreek word. Nog meer, betoog die verhandeling dat dit vandag epistemologies geregverdig is om te glo dat die betrokke leerstellings deur hedendaagse wetenskaplike bevindings en ander tersaaklike bewyse onwaar gemaak is.
