Mission on the margins : the work of the Anglican Diocese of Bujumbura in the community of BwizaBahizi, Thierry 01 1900 (has links)
This study uses a praxis cycle approach to evaluate the work of the Anglican Diocese of Bujumbura in the community of Bwiza, a marginalised urban community in Bujumbura. In Chapter 2 it analyses the context of urbanisation in Burundi, with special reference to Bujumbura as capital. It then examines the work of the Diocese of Bujumbura in that urban setting in Chapter 3, against the background of Burundi’s religious composition and the history of the Anglican Church in Burundi as a whole. Chapter 4, gives a review of publications devoted to urban mission and theology. Special attention is given to liberation theology and the particular way it addresses poverty. Chapter 5 reports the findings of interviews and focus groups conducted with members of various churches in the community of Bwiza. In Chapter 6 these findings are interpreted missiologically, and the final chapter (7) suggests some issues for further research.
The study explores the causes of poverty in Bwiza and suggests practical contributions that can bring about positive change. The main concern of the study is to bring awareness to the churches about the urgent need for urban ministry. It also explores possible solutions to urban poverty. The other concern of this study is to provide a basis for an urban mission strategy for the Anglican Church, which could assist other churches and all faith based organisations serving in urban settings. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / M. German text / In dieser Forschungsarbeit werden Merkmale eines missionalen Lebensstils und deren
transformatorische Auswirkungen erforscht, um gesellschaftliche Formen der Gemeinde- und
Glaubenspraxis zu entwickeln. Im Zentrum steht eine empirisch-theologische Untersuchung
einer Wohn- und Lebensgemeinschaft in einem sozialen Brennpunkt. Mit den Mitgliedern wurde
in einen Zeitraum von über einem Jahr regelmäßig eine Gruppendiskussion durchgeführt, deren
Auswertung mit Hilfe der Methode der Grounded Theory (Strauss/Corbin) erfolgte. Die
Ergebnisse der Datenanalyse wurden dann mit den aktuellen praktisch-theologischen Ansätzen
zur Thematik sowie mit lerntheoretischen Ansätzen in Beziehung gesetzt, um Folgerungen für
eine transformatorische und ganzheitliche Gemeinde- und Glaubenspraxis im sozialen
Brennpunkt zu ziehen. Die erzielten Ergebnisse zeigen die Chance, Wichtigkeit und
Herausforderung die diese Arbeit mit sich bringt. Die vorliegende erste qualitative Studie zu
dieser Thematik möchte Wohn- und Lebensgemeinschaften in der Ausübung eines missionalen
Lebensstils Orientierung und Hilfestellung bieten und einen Forschungsbeitrag zur aktuellen
Debatte um den Begriff „missional“ im Kontext der Praktischen Theologie geben. / This research study examines characteristic traits of a missional lifestyle and its transformatory
effects, in order to develop societal forms of church and faith practice. At the centre of the study
is the empirical-theological exploration of a communal living project in a socially deprived
locality. Members regularly took part in group discussions over the course of more than a year,
the results of which were evaluated with the help of the Grounded Theory Method
(Strauss/Corbin). The results of the data analysis were then set in relation to the current practicaltheological
approaches to the topic, as well as to learning theoretical approaches, in order to
draw conclusions for a transformatory and holistic church and faith practice in a socially
deprived locality. The results reveal the opportunities, challenges and significance of this work.
This research, the first qualitative study on the topic, intends to provide communal living
projects with the orientation and support required for a missional lifestyle, and to contribute to

In 1994 South Africa celebrated the election of a new democratic government. This came with the abolition of the Group Areas Act 36of1966, which controlled the movement of black people from rural areas to urban areas.
The repealing of this act led to the rapid movement of people from rural areas all over Southern Africa to the cities and towns in search for a better life. In turn this led to rapid urbanization and the growth of informal settlements' also known as squatter camps. These communities are characterized by poverty and lack of basic necessities such as houses,
water and employment.
The church was caught unaware by the need to minister to these communities that need more than the gospel that satisfies spiritual poverty but also the satisfaction of material poverty. This exposed the need for a model of ministry that will be holistic. This study shares a model of ministry that has been used by a Methodist congregation in an

Extreme poverty is the most devastating problem facing the human race, because it condemns nearly half of the world‘s population to hunger, disease and oppression-often with little or no hope for the future. The human beings made in the image of God are tragically prevented from realizing their God given potentials because of poverty. The reality of poverty can be overwhelming, but we must understand that this age old adversary can be defeated. According to the famous maxim ―If you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day, but if you teach a man how to fish, he will eat for a lifetime‖.
Therefore, the best way to fight poverty is to empower the people to shape their own future-to treat the causes of poverty and not just the symptoms (Stearns: 2010, 300)

promulgated in the 1960s and 1970s, namely the Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes in
Catholicism and the Lausanne Covennant in Protestantism, with a focus on poverty in Latin
America, using a bibliographical and documentary research methodology. Main theoretical
references included the sociology of Max Weber in analyzing the motivations behind the
documents, and the missiology of David Bosch to study the historical and theological
contexts.
The dissertation is structured in three chapters. In the first, we analyse the context that
defines the conception of Christianity regarding the mission of the church in the nineteenth
century, as well as the way in which the two Christian perspectives viewed the question of
poverty. The second chapter analyzes the two documents and their social, political, and
economic context of the mid-twentieth century and identifies the conception of poverty within
the mission context in a new paradigm, missio Dei, which classifies poverty as an institutional
and structural problem in both Christian perspectives. In the third chapter, we analyze the
theoretical implications and the contradictions that the new paradigm brings to the question of
the poverty of the Latin American populations, the practical repercussions with the
organization of the Ecclesial Base Communities, Liberation Theology and Theology of the
Integral Mission / O presente estudo teve como objetivo realizar uma análise de dois documentos oficiais do
cristianismo promulgados nas décadas de 1960-1970, a saber, a Constituição Pastoral
Gaudium et Spes no catolicismo, e o Pacto de Lausanne, no protestantismo, tendo como eixo
a questão da pobreza na América Latina, pela metodologia da pesquisa bibliográfica e
documental. Utilizou-se como referenciais teóricos principais a sociologia de Max Weber
para análise das motivações por trás dos documentos e a missiologia de David Bosch que
orientaram o estudo dos contextos históricos e teológicos. A dissertação foi estruturada em
três capítulos. No primeiro, foram verificados os contextos que definiram a concepção do
cristianismo quanto à missão da Igreja no século XIX, e analisada a maneira como as duas
vertentes cristãs se posicionavam quanto à questão da pobreza. O segundo capítulo analisa os

Doing narrative counselling in the context of township spiritualitiesLandman, C.(Christina) 30 June 2007 (has links)
The study describes the counselling journey undertaken with 270 patients at the Family Medicine Clinic at Kalafong Hospital in Atteridgeville, Tshwane, between June 2000 and December 2003. Of these patients 75% were women, 74% were black and 97% Christian, with half of them belonging to born-again churches. A majority of the patients (52%) were unemployed and the others employed in minimum salary jobs. A third of the patients had attemped suicide at least once before, and a third had lost at least one close family member.
With these patients a narrative pastoral counselling practice was established. Narrative counselling was practised as a MEET process in which the patients' problem-saturated stories were mapped and their problems externalised; they were empowered through the deconstruction of religious problem discourses, and their alternative stories were thickened by means of religious practices. This was a pastoral practice with a focus on religious discourses as problem discourses, and on the deconstruction of these discourses towards alternatives stories of faith.
The first aim of the study was to describe the faces of religious problem discourses. They are (1) power discourses that hold patients captive in divinely sanctions hierarchies of gender and class, (2) body discourses that alienated patients from their bodies, (3) identity discourses that placed the religious identities of patients in conflict with their other identities, and (4) otherness discourses that created barriers between patients and God.
The second aim of the study was to describe the externalised faces of the problems ruining the patients' lives. Here Losses, Loneliness and Lack of money were described as problems causing amongst patients feelings of worthlessness, depression, paralysis, body aches and many more.
The third aim of the study was to describe the characteristics of the narrative pastoral counselling practice that has been established. This practice (1) negotiates healing between binaries such as Western/African, culture and dogma/lived experience; patient passivity/patient agency; (2) respects the indigenous knowledge of patients as it is embodied in township spiritualities; and (3) aims at introducing patients to a community of care as well as a new community of discourse where they can experience spiritual healing. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / D. "The Response of African Religion to Poverty with specific reference to the Umzimkhulu Municipality" is a particular effort of the wider world that researches the ways and means for combating the scourge of poverty in society aiming at securing a better future for the future generations.
In as much as African traditional religion is part of the culture, tradition and custom of its tenants, and as such aims at the wellbeing of its tenants, it is able to offer a response to poverty. It teaches about the importance of the values of community, meaningful and life-affirming relationships and the value of ubuntu. All these clamour for extended sharing and extended participation which are essential if society will continue to exist.
African traditional religion maintains an ethic that says: `Real poverty results from the
blockage of the vital links'. Celebrating economic achievements in food must be preceded by the celebration of people. `Batho pele': is the contemporary Democratic South Africa's slogan that suggests putting people in the center of life. It does not only call us to serve the poor, but also to allow them to champion the courses of the kind of service they desire.
African traditional religion teaches that, together with the other institutions that govern the lives of people, religion and politics should have among other things a concern about production and distribution of the resources, hence the claim: `Food is also politics'. In their dealing with the problem of poverty, religion, politics and other social institutions ought to dedicate a special place to instilling positive attitudes towards the concept of work among their tenants. In this way the slogan `Batho pele' or people first, does not merely mean waiting to be served, but it also means that every body to the best of their ability ought to be doing something towards the production of the items of service.
The inclusiveness of African religion in terms of what it calls `community' cautions society about the importance of the other beings in its consideration of poverty alleviation.
