The battle of Brain vs. Heart: A literature review and meta-analysis of "hedonic motivation" use in UTAUT2

Tamilmani, Kuttimani, Rana, Nripendra P., Prakasam, N., Dwivedi, Y.K. 06 January 2020 (has links)
Yes / Much of the scholarly debate on the extrinsic-intrinsic motivation dichotomy to date has focused on organisational context. However, the recent upsurge of technology use amongst individuals in non-organisational context has led to consumer-focused research model such as extended unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2). The objective of this study is to bring back much needed focus on motivation dichotomy from the consumer perspective. This involved a systematic review and meta-analysis of hedonic motivation an affective construct in UTAUT2 studies. The findings from 79 UTAUT2 empirical studies revealed that only 46 studies (58%) utilised hedonic motivation while the remaining 33 studies (42%) omitted the construct. Extrinsic motivation was the major driver of non-hedonic and non-significant hedonic motivation studies with individuals using technologies for utilitarian outcomes. Unlike UTAUT2, moderators association of hedonic motivation were non-significant in determining consumer intention to use technology. The findings also revealed an important association between hedonic motivation and effort expectancy, in addition to fruitful directions for research and practice.

Consumer acceptance and use of information technology: A meta-analytic evaluation of UTAUT2

Tamilmani, Kuttimani, Rana, Nripendra P., Dwivedi, Y.K. 15 March 2020 (has links)
Yes / Despite being regarded as the most comprehensive theory in understanding individual technology adoption – UTAUT2 theory with growing number of citations and impetus beyond IS domain face strong criticism on usage of the model in its entirety. This study located UTAUT2 based empirical studies in the Scopus and Web of Science bibliographic database through citied reference search in order to evaluate appropriate usage of UTAUT2 constructs. The meta-analysis results spanning across 60 studies with more than 122,000 cumulative observations found BI→UB as the strongest path with all significant values. PE→BI emerged as the most utilized path with most significant values underscoring the emphasis placed by consumers on utilitarian value. Meanwhile, with most non-significant path values the future usage of EE→BI path is been cautioned and questioned. Finally, trust, personal innovativeness, perceived risk, attitude, and self-efficacy were found as the five topmost UTAUT2 extensions.

The Rise of Postmethod Epistemology in the L2 English Teaching Field

Alsuwat, Sami Eid 05 1900 (has links)
Citation analysis, which provides insights into the influence of particular scholarly work in a field of study, can also show epistemological "turns" through patterns of citations over time. This study explored the impact of postmethod epistemology on the shared knowledge of the English-as-a-second-language (L2) education community over a 26-year period. The approach consisted of tabulating and analyzing citations in 125 articles from two major journals, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Quarterly (TESOL Qrtrly) and English Language Teaching Journal (ELT). The time period covered was 1994, when the term postmethod was introduced in TESOL Qrtrly, through 2019. Attention went to the following questions for each journal and for both journals together: (i) who is the most influential of the three major postmethod authors, B. Kumaravadivelu, Richard Allwright, or Hans Stern? (ii) what was the most cited postmethod publication? and (iii) have there been patterns over time for citations of postmethod authors and publications and for the use of the term postmethod? Of the three postmethod authors, Kumaravadivelu was the most cited in the two journals combined. For TESOL Qrtrly, Kumaravadivelu was the most cited, and Stern was second. For ELT, Kumaravadivelu and Allwright had an equal number of citations, and both surpassed Stern. Of the 23 postmethod publications by these scholars, the most highly cited in both journals was Kumaravadivelu's 1994 article "The Postmethod Condition." It was the most cited in TESOL Quarterly, followed by Stern's 1983 book Fundamental Concepts of Language Teaching. In ELT, Allwright and Bailey's 1991 book, Focus on the Language Classroom, was the most cited followed by Allwright's 2003 article, "Exploratory Practice: Rethinking Practitioner Research," published in Language Teaching Research. Trend analyses for citations in TESOL Quarterly and ELT showed curvilinear patterns with a peak in postmethod citations in the two journals in the mid-2000s. In regard to the term postmethod, patterns suggested that it did not become mainstream in the two journals that were studied. This inquiry, which was focused on two major journals in L2 English education, provided some details about the impact of postmethod epistemology in a period that some scholars have called the "postmethod era." Through citation analysis, the study helps to situate postmethod epistemology historically.

Analysing ranking algorithms and publication trends on scholarly citation networks

Dunaiski, Marcel Paul 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Citation analysis is an important tool in the academic community. It can aid universities, funding bodies, and individual researchers to evaluate scientific work and direct resources appropriately. With the rapid growth of the scientific enterprise and the increase of online libraries that include citation analysis tools, the need for a systematic evaluation of these tools becomes more important. The research presented in this study deals with scientific research output, i.e., articles and citations, and how they can be used in bibliometrics to measure academic success. More specifically, this research analyses algorithms that rank academic entities such as articles, authors and journals to address the question of how well these algorithms can identify important and high-impact entities. A consistent mathematical formulation is developed on the basis of a categorisation of bibliometric measures such as the h-index, the Impact Factor for journals, and ranking algorithms based on Google’s PageRank. Furthermore, the theoretical properties of each algorithm are laid out. The ranking algorithms and bibliometric methods are computed on the Microsoft Academic Search citation database which contains 40 million papers and over 260 million citations that span across multiple academic disciplines. We evaluate the ranking algorithms by using a large test data set of papers and authors that won renowned prizes at numerous Computer Science conferences. The results show that using citation counts is, in general, the best ranking metric. However, for certain tasks, such as ranking important papers or identifying high-impact authors, algorithms based on PageRank perform better. As a secondary outcome of this research, publication trends across academic disciplines are analysed to show changes in publication behaviour over time and differences in publication patterns between disciplines.

An international multidisciplinary analysis of scholarly communication through investigating citation levels

Levitt, Jonathan January 2008 (has links)
This thesis seeks to demonstrate that the new facilities of Web of Science (WoS) online can be used in new ways to enhance understanding of scholarly communication. It investigates four aspects of scholarly communication: characteristics of highly cited articles, citation levels of collaborative articles, citation levels of multi-disciplinary articles, and patterns of annual citation of highly cited articles. For the first two topics it investigates the WoS category of ‘Information Science & Library Science’ (IS&LS), whereas for the other topics it compares diverse WoS categories in science and social science. Although its main data source is WoS, its investigation of disciplinarity also uses Scopus. The thesis finds: (a) Highly cited IS&LS articles tend to be multidisciplinary and cited late, but are not necessarily first-authored by influential IS&LS researchers, (b) Amongst un-cite IS&LS articles the proportion of collaborative articles has remained almost constant over the past three decades whereas for higher cited articles it has grown steadily with time, (C) In social science subjects the level of citation of multi-disciplinary research are generally similar to that of mono-disciplinary research, whereas in science the citations levels for multi-disciplinary research are substantially lower than that of mono-disciplinary research, and (d) In both science and social science many very highly cited articles continue to be heavily cited more than twenty years after publication. This thesis also introduces and uses an indicator for measuring the extent of collaboration called ‘average partner scores’ and indicates a way in which the subject categories of WoS can be investigated without requiring a licence for the WoS database. Finally, it identifies and addresses some of the technical problems of using WoS online to investigate scholarly communication.

Silveira, Murilo Artur Araújo da January 2016 (has links)
Analysis of the production forms and distinction instances at the Knowledge Organization and Representation domain in Brazil. The research general objective is to elaborate and apply an analysis model of the production and distinction relations in the Knowledge Organization and Representation domain in Brazil according to the citations theoretical conceptions, through the mentions made by Brazilian researchers at the articles periodicals and proceedings of ENANCIB from 2011 to 2014. The specific objectives are: a) To formulate and apply a theoretical-methodological model of production and distinction analysis, based upon the theories and citations concepts postulates; B) To identify and characterize the theoretical and methodological concepts at the Knowledge Organization and Representation domain in a references framework; C) To map and analyze the articles and citations network at the Knowledge Organization and Representation domain in Brazil; and d) To distinguish and relate the production and distinction concepts with the articles and citations network at the Brazilian scientific community domain. It discusses and problematizes citation practices as socially constructed phenomena at the science universe, in its objective and subjective aspects, but also presents results from these practices at the scientific production of the Brazilian Information Science field. It systematizes a set of contributions focused on citation studies theories through epistemological matrix synoptic tables, focusing on the following elements: objects, objectives, variables, methods and results. It presents the sociocultural idea configuration for the citation studies as a complementary alternative to the current theories and methodologies, in order to integrate into a multidimensional model. It uses the triangulation methods to achieve the objectives and direct it to three distinct and related corpus of the Knowledge Organization and Representation domain, configuring itself in an investigation based upon methodology and description. The main results of the research are: a) the production forms explain relations of domination, cooperation and coexistence between actors and institutions; b) the distinction instances show coherent and contradictory links at the disputes scene, with representative marks of domination, equality and coexistence relations; and c) the production and praise relations are manifested through self-citation as an institutional ideological component which ensures the historically claimed and proclaimed standard of excellence by the actors. It reveals that production forms and distinction instances, as dynamic elements that reflect the constitution and scientific activity institutionalization, can be visualized through the citation practice in their objective and subjective perspectives.
