A study on the Relationship of City Brand and City Identity in KaohsiungSu, Szu-chieh 11 July 2011 (has links)
Under the globalization, competition between the cities have been stronger, so how to establish its own advantage of the city brand is necessary, in order to increase it¡¦s competitiveness. Especially, in accordance to city and county consolidation, we create the city identity for the residents by city brand.
Therefore, this research wants to know perceptiveness from the residents who live in different regions, in order to rebuild a new city brand which residents can accept. It¡¦s a important mission to promote the city identity for Kaohsiung.
In this study, the study subjects consisted of 200 former Kaohsiung citizens, 200 former county residents and residents who not live in Kaohsiung. Because people live in different inhabited areas, which not only affects people¡¦s perceiptions on city brand and city identity, but also interferes the relationship between city brand and city identity. Furthermore, we want to know whether brand equity is a mediator on this relationship.
This research passes the concept structure of Anholt City Brand Index, including ¡§The Presence¡¨, ¡§The Place¡¨, ¡§The Prerequisits¡¨, ¡§The people¡¨, ¡§The pulse¡¨, ¡§The Potential¡¨. The research analysis shows that people who live in different inhabited areas appeal significantly different in ¡§The Presence¡¨and ¡§The rerequisits¡¨. In this case, the result means that Kaohsiung should hold more international activities proactively, and strengthene to promote to others who not live in live in Kaohsiung. Most importantly, government needs to enhance the conditions of¡§The rerequisits¡¨ in the whole Kaohsiung city.
Further on, the research analysis shows that no matter where the residents live, the people and the pulse can contribute the positive effect significantly for city identity. Therefore, in order to promote management of city marketing, we will start from the two factors. In addition, the brand equity can affect the relationship between city brand and city identity. It can not only improve the perception of city brand, but also help to find a Kaohsiung irreplaceable identity.

A critical analysis of local and global cultural factors in graphic wayfinding design : a case study of BeijingKong, Lingqi January 2016 (has links)
The main intentions of this thesis are to analyse and explain changes in the function and graphic components of Beijing s wayfinding systems and to explain how the systems construct multiple cultural and political identities at different historical periods and in changing local/global contexts. In the thesis, the oversimplified one-way theory of the global-local dichotomy, in which the global power of the West is overwhelming and constantly dominant, and the local system of non-Western countries is passive and fragile, is challenged. Instead, this thesis seeks to examine the interactivity and correlation of the local and the global from two perspectives: mobility and reversibility. Looking at mobility is to consider the local and global and their nexus as different interconnections and networks that are constantly and unevenly changing. Reversibility, with which this thesis is most concerned, deals primarily with the reversible relationship of the local and global, namely, that either the local or the global can be dominant. This point is well illustrated by the evolution of Beijing s graphic wayfinding systems function and appearance. Beijing, as the capital of China, has undergone a radical transformation from the fall of the last Empire Qing (1912) to the establishment of the People s Republic of China (1949). The meaning of Beijing varies in accordance with the changes in its political and social structures. There have been five phases in Beijing s development: a well-planned imperial city; a capital city with a republican spirit; a totally industrialised but relatively isolated capital of a socialist country; an open and modernised Chinese-style socialist city; and a cosmopolitan city. In the course of this metamorphosis, what took place was a series of collisions, exchanges, fusions, and re-collisions between local power and global power. Along with the immense changes in Beijing, the role and appearance of the graphic wayfinding systems have also changed, especially those of road signs and doorplates, whose roles have been transformed from that of initial household register to orientation reference, to effective propaganda tool, and then on to the regeneration of a city. Finally, Beijing s graphic wayfinding design within its urban development has been reconfirmed as a useful instrument to support the new forms of visual narratives and consolidate the city brand of Beijing in the 21st century. This study probes into the political and cultural significances behind the changes of the graphic wayfinding systems of Beijing, as well as the interaction between the local and the global as reflected in the formation of these findings. The mutable and reversible relationship between the local and the global is illustrated and clarified through analysis and comparison of various functions and visual elements between Beijing s present graphic wayfinding systems and its early wayfinding signs, as well as decoding the different mainstream political or cultural ideologies that have deeply affected the function and design of Beijing graphic wayfinding systems at different periods.

On City Identity and Its Moral DimensionsEpting, Shane Ray 12 1900 (has links)
The majority of people on Earth now live in cities, and estimates hold that 60 percent of the world’s cities have yet to be built. Now is the time for philosophers to develop a philosophy of the city to address the forthcoming issues that urbanization will bring. In this dissertation, I respond to this need for a philosophy of the city by developing a theory of city identity, developing some of the theory’s normative implications, illustrating the theory with a case study, and outlining the nature and future of philosophy of the city more generally. Indeed, this dissertation is only a part of my larger project of founding and institutionalizing this new field of both academic and socially-engaged philosophical activity. Throughout the history of the discipline, other areas such a personal identity have received numerous considerations, along with the concept of identity as an abstraction. For example, there is a bounty of research addressing problems pertaining to how objects and people retain an identity over time and claims about identity in general. While one could argue that cities are not any different than any other object, such an account fails to consider that a city’s dynamic nature makes it dissimilar to other things. To illustrate this point, I develop a position called dynamic composition as identity theory that provides a framework for understanding the identity of a city, exhibiting that views within analytic metaphysics are too narrow to apply to all cases. After establishing a concept of city identity, I use an applied mereology to develop a model of city identity that shows how the parts of a city fit together to form a complete city. This model introduces the normative dimension of my project by providing a way to identify how incongruence between a city’s parts can cause problems for residents’ wellbeing. To understand the moral dimensions of infrastructure, I argue that moral theory alone is ill prepared to adequately demonstrate its full range of effects. Yet, instead of developing another moral theory, we can supplement existing moral theories with the concepts of sustainability and resilience thinking to account for the elements that traditional moral systems neglect. I support this view with a detailed account of transportation infrastructure. Namely, I show that current frameworks for assessing transportation infrastructure are inadequate, and employ the method of complex moral assessment developed earlier to make such assessments. Lastly, I show how the research in this dissertation counts as intra-disciplinary research, a new kind of method for philosophical research.

Dessa forma, surgem alternativas para retomar esses espaços buscando estabelecer ou retomar antigas identidades. Uma alternativa que surge é via patrimônio na qual é realizada uma retomada do passado através do restauro desses espaços esvaziados. Esse trabalho irá realizar uma pesquisa sobre essa tendência mundial, através do estudo de caso da atuação do Projeto Monumenta no centro histórico de Porto Alegre/RS sob a ótica do Design Estratégico. / In the current context of globalization, the society has transformed the relationship space - time. Considering this view cities do a search for a resumption of local identity. On the other hand the public space of cities have shown a progressive emptying, so there are alternatives to seeking recovery of these spaces be new or resume old identities. An alternative that comes up is through equity is held in which a resumption of the past through the restoration of these spaces emptied. This paper will conduct a search on this global trend, through a case study of the performance of the Monumenta Project in the historic center of Porto Alegre from the perspective of Strategic Design.

The theoretical structure of the study is composed of understanding the life cycle of metro system classified in three evolutionary phases. These process definitions respectively start with demand related to metro, continue with the acceptance of metro as the preferential alternative by inhabitants and end with the subway that embedded as an important reason that build city identity. Phases will be studied through its motives and will be analyzed
through physical design considerations. The reason of the prevision is stemmed from the hypothetical approach which is stated as the influences of the design considerations of metro utilities are highly related on its life cycle and in forming local identity. The test of the hypothesis will be handled in two
methods. The first will be a survey study which will include checklist to portraiture demand and course of the system in first two stages. At the preliminary stage, the topics of underground, underground use and the history of railway and urban railway network in world and Turkey are discussed to get a better and more comprehensive understanding of metro.
Next method is designed to cross-examine design considerations and local identity by value judgment analysis for the last stage. In this phase, validity of the hypothesis will be audited by correspondence analysis. Value judgments
depended assertion and expression of values which reached by
correspondence analysis and Bertin Graphs, are accepted as the determinations that addresses the relationship between physical structure and local identity. The evaluation of the metro&rsquo / s physical qualifications during its life cycle, which can be noted under several headings and the relationship
between the physical aspects and those of the local characteristics, are proposed to be put forth as contributions by this thesis.

La présente thèse se propose d'évaluer le rôle de l'identité urbaine dans les évolutions des approches de la rénovation urbaine en Iran et à Téhéran contemporain. La Partie I examine les fondements théoriques dont l'identité et l'identité du lieu, ainsi que leur rôle dans l'histoire de la civilisation iranienne. Le chapitre 1 présente une analyse des pensées des philosophes irano-musulmans pour déterminer un cadre pour le concept de l'identité. Le chapitre 3 se servira de ce cadre conceptuel pour obtenir les critères d'évaluation de l'identité de la ville. La Partie II est consacrée aux expériences de la rénovation urbaine dans le monde et présentera une image générale de l'évolution historique des tendances identitaires. La Partie III examine les politiques identitaires, les programmes, la législation et les plans de rénovations urbaines pendant l'histoire contemporaine de l'Iran. In the first chapter, the framework of the concept of identity in the culture of Iran is developed by the content analysis of the main Iranian-Islamic philosophers' view. In the third chapter, the criteria of evaluating place identity and its functions are investigated by using this framework and analyzing theoreticians' views. In the second part, the experiences of urban renovation in the world are studied and dominant approaches are introduced. In the third part, while identifying identity policies, development programs, regulations and urban plans are evaluated in three main periods of the contemporary history of Iran. The result of this part is identifying currents claiming identity in the urban renovation of Iran comparing the change of their tendencies towards its universal evolution. In the fourth part, renovation approaches in Tehran and the change of their tendencies towards urban identity are evaluated by focusing on three case studies of the main renovation projects in Tehran. Finally, the conclusion was drawn that urban identity has been suggested as one of the main challenges of urban renovation in Iran and Tehran and has had a determining rote in changing renovation approaches. Various approaches are examined to achieve the desirable urban identity in Tehran that their evolution is started from frame-oriented modernistic methods and is ended in landscape approach based on place making.
