Structural Characterization of Three Southeast Segments of the Clark Fault, Salton Trough California

Belgarde, Benjamin E. 01 May 2007 (has links)
We examine the structural complexities of a 28-km long part of the Clark fault of the San Jacinto fault zone in southern California in order to better document its lateral extent and the style of deformation of its southeast end. Changes in structural style are observed as the Clark fault’s damage zone widens from ~ 1-2 km in crystalline rocks of the Peninsular Ranges southeastward to ~ 18 km in the sedimentary rocks of the San Felipe-Borrego subbasin of the Salton Trough. The Clark fault extends into the San Felipe-Borrego subbasin as the Arroyo Salada segment for ~ 11-12 km to a newly defined northeast-trending structural boundary. This structural boundary, referred to herein as the Pumpkin Crossing block, is a ~ 3-km wide and ~ 8-km long fault zone dominated by northeast-striking sinistral-normal strike-slip faults. Southeast of the Pumpkin Crossing block the newly defined San Felipe Hills segment extends the Clark fault another ~12-13 km southeast to its intersection with the Extra fault zone. The Clark fault may have nearly 14.5-18 km of right separation represented in the surface deformation of the Arroyo Salada and San Felipe Hills segments, but the total amount of strain is masked by the wide diffuse fault zone with its complex deformation patterns and geometries. The lateral change observed in microseismicity patterns across the Arroyo Salada and San Felipe Hills segment boundary supports our structural interpretations about the existence, location, and structure of this boundary. Vertical patterns in the microseismicity suggest that the Clark fault zone narrows at depth, dips steeply northeast in the subsurface, and must interact with at least one weak decollement layer(s) beneath and/or with the sedimentary basin. Structural deformation within the late Miocene to Holocene silty- and clay-rich sedimentary basin of the Salton Trough includes features characteristic of strike-slip faults, such as stepovers, conjugate faults, folds, flower structures, and fault bends, as well as many unique structures that include pooch structures, ramp-flat geometries of strike-slip faults, complex en echelon fault zones with localized shear distributed across a high frequency network of faults, and heterogeneous kinematic indicators within individual fault zones.

Thomas Jefferson And The Execution Of The United States Indian Policy

Lewis, Daniel 01 January 2010 (has links)
This work investigates the American-Indian policy between 1790 and 1810 through the vehicle of the American government, focusing on the 'white, sincere, religious-minded men who believed intensely in both American expansion and positive relations with the Indians.' While Indian reaction comprises an important piece of the native-white cultural encounter in the West, this study questions if scholars have the ability to address this problem in more than a very general way. In truth, each tribe was unique and different in their reaction to white legislation and settlement. There was no pan-Indian movement against settlement, and for the same reason, there is no pan-Indian history. However, it is possible to write of the white Americans as more of a single entity. They were closely united both in outlook and in goals. They had a single program which they meant to apply to all the Indians. This work will attempt to assess the piece of this policy regarding the fur trade and the Northwest. This study also links the Republican policies of Thomas Jefferson with the platforms of his federalist predecessors. Thorough investigation reveals choices in Western settlement were made by both government officials and settlers. Settlement of the Western frontier did not follow a predetermined path; private settlement and frontier violence were not predestined. Many junctures existed where it could have shifted. Lewis and Clark can be used as a case study with which to assess Jeffersonian policy. First, the men followed direct orders from Jefferson, instructed to act as the 'forward voice' of his anticipated policy. Second, the men recorded almost the entirety of the voyage, and thoroughly captured the initial contact between whites and natives. Moreover, this contact occurred in region without previous contact with whites. As such, the Lewis and Clark expedition affords a unique opportunity to eliminate some of the inherent biases which were amassed during the colonial period of contact, both with the British and the American colonies.

Brown study an original musical recording

Clark, Alan 01 December 2012 (has links)
For a year and a spring semester, I have been in the works of a school music project. I set out to make a record of ten self-penned songs. Along the length of the project, I would discover musicians and recording artists. I notated my songs on a staff and recorded demos to assist players of drums, electric bass, French horn, and violin. I play guitar, percussion, synthesized instruments, and do all of the singing on Brown Study, the record's title. The technology used to create the songs include a Tascam 2488 (home digital recording device), computers, printers, cell phones and i-phones, amplifiers, microphones and headphones, and a drum machine. This is my first attempt at collaborating with other musicians. At the defense I will be presenting 4 songs: "Runaway," "Lonely Heart," "Topsy Turvy," and "Friendliest Advice." Each song has a particular history and story to tell containing influences and aesthetic philosophies. My gift is to be shared with whoever will listen upon completing and distributing the full-length album.

A Victorian Frame of Mind: The Thought of John Clark Murray

Terpstra, Charles Nicholas 04 1900 (has links)

John Clark Murray (1836 - 1917) held the Chair of Mental and Moral Philosophy at Queen's College from 1862 to 1872, and at McGill University from 1872 until his retirement in 1903. The purpose of the present study is to offer a close historical examination of a thinker who has often been treated as a transitional thinker in histories of philosophical activity in nineteenth century Canada. The opening biographical chapter establishes the Scottish cultural tradition in which Murray was raised and whose social and educational values he continued to perpetuate in his own writing and teaching. The Scottish tradition clarifies the critical discussion in Chapter Two of some of the ambiguities of Murray's position with regard to the philosophical movements of the nineteenth century. In particular, the difficulties of classing Murray with either the Scottish Common Sense Realists, the Neo-Kantian or Neo-Hegelian Idealists, or the rising group of 'professional' philosophers are considered. Specific elements of the intellectual framework of John Clark Murray's thought are dealt with in Chapter Three. Such characteristic concerns as the structure of knowledge, the relation of materialism and idealism, freedom and necessity, and moral philosophy are considered in themselves and as components of the unified order of truth which Murray found best expressed in Christianity. The final chapter focuses on Murray's effort to formulate a response to the social problems emerging as a consequence of industrialism. After establishing the ideological strength of Murray's economic and political liberalism, this chapter traces the efforts of a concerned liberal to understand contemporary problems and of fer solutions to them.
/ Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Aspectos da Estruturação do Self de Lygia Clark: perspectivas críticas / Aspects of Lygia Clark\'s Structuring of the Self: critical perspectives

Almeida, Eduardo Augusto Alves de 01 November 2013 (has links)
This research engages in conceptual issues of contemporary art implicated in the entitled proposition Structuring of the Self, developed by the Brazilian artist Lygia Clark between 1978 and 1988, which puts itself in an ambiguous boundary between art and therapy. Through critical perspectives it is possible to analyze certain aspects of that experience, its development, territories and paradigms in order to better understand its contributions to the contemporary artistic thought. These aspects concern to the aesthetic reception of the work and its relation to a certain public of art; to the ways of thinking and doing art; to its own time; to the possible approaches with other areas of knowledge, such as philosophy and psychology; to the places where the art is presented (museum, gallery, atelier, clinic); to its ethical issues and policies; to the critical production. In short, it is about realizing what is of contemporary in the Lygia Clark\'s work and, from it, to review the artistic thought itself.

To do so, heuristic and metaheuristic based algorithms applied towards the development of a decision support system, with georeferenced interface were developed. The algorithms had as base heuristic methods built in two phases, besides a metaheuristic. The interface layer used as visualization component is based in cartographic data that indicates the location of the points to be assisted and the paths that connects them, forming a road system represented using the Google Maps® API. The algorithms were validated using instances from the literature, presenting satisfactory results regarding optimization based in the methods that were used, showing that it is possible the usage of the developed system in the distribution of agricultural products.
