A Study of the Relationship of Communication Technology Configurations in Virtual Research Environments and Effectiveness of Collaborative Research

Ahmed, Iftekhar 16 January 2010 (has links)
Virtual Research Environments (VRE) are electronic meeting places for interaction among scientists created by combining software tools and computer networking. Virtual teams are enjoying increased importance in the conduct of scientific research because of the rising cost of traditional scientific scholarly communication, the growing importance of shared academic research by geographically dispersed scientific teams, and changes in the corporate research structures. New facilities provided by the Internet technology enhanced this situation. Currently, our knowledge about VRE-based scientific communication and what makes it effective is relatively immature in terms of understanding technology (interface, architecture, and software evaluation), system management (software systems, visualization, scalability), knowledge bases, expert systems, and coordination. Moreover, we do not have a comprehensive classification scheme for virtual research environments primarily from a technological viewpoint. This study provided an analysis of VRE from a technological standpoint and developed a conceptual model that identified factors facilitating collaboration effectiveness with a primary focus on technology. VRE portals were at the core of the investigation as they are the entry points for VRE related information and resource access. First, the study developed a methodological framework for characterizing VREs, applied that framework to examine and classify existing VRE systems, and developed a new classification. Then, the study established a relationship between the technological profiles of various types of VREs and their productivity. Study results show that the technological arrangements of the VRE neither depend upon scientific discipline nor the existing functional typology. The study did not identify a significant presence of communication and collaboration technologies within the VRE systems. However, results indicated that there were a correlation between communication and collaboration technologies and VRE effectiveness.

Exploring Automatic Citation Classification

Radoulov, Radoslav 20 May 2008 (has links)
Currently, citation indexes used by digital libraries are very limited. They only provide raw citation counts and link scientific articles through their citations. There are more than one type of citations, but citation indexes treat all citations equally. One way to improve citation indexes is to determine the types of citations in scientific articles (background, support, perfunctory reference, etc.) This will enable researchers to query citation indexes more efficiently by locating articles grouped by citation types. For example, it can enable a researcher to locate all background material needed to understand a specific article by locating all "background" citations. Many classification schemes currently exist. However, manual annotation of all existing digital documents is infeasible because of the sheer magnitude of the digital content, which brings about the need for automating the annotating process, but not much research has been done in the area. One of the reasons preventing researchers from researching automated citation classification is the lack on annotated corpora that they can use. This thesis explores automated citation classification. We make several contributions to the field of citation classification. We present a new citation scheme that is easier to work with than most. Also, we present a document acquisition and citation annotation tool that helps with the development of annotated citation corpora. And finally, we present some experiments with automating citation classification.

Patterns and protocols for agent-oriented software development

Oluyomi, Ayodele O. Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
Agent-oriented software engineering is faced with challenges that impact on the adoption of agent technology by the wider software engineering community. This is generally due to lack of adequate comprehension of the concepts of agent technology. This thesis is based on the premise that the comprehension of the concepts of and the adoption of agent technology can be improved. Two approaches are explored: the first approach is the analysis and structuring of the interactions in multiagent systems; the second approach is sharing of experiences of what works and what does not in agent-oriented software engineering using software patterns. While analysis of interactions in multiagent systems improves the understanding of the behaviour of multiagent systems, sharing multiagent system development experience improves the understanding of the concepts of agent technology as well as the challenges that face the engineering of multiagent systems. It is therefore believed that interaction analysis and experience sharing can enhance the comprehension of agent technology and hence, the adoption of the technology by the wider community of software practitioners. This thesis addresses the challenges facing agent-oriented software engineering by presenting a dedicated approach for developing agent interaction protocols to guide the interactions in a multiagent system; and a comprehensive framework for classifying, analyzing and describing agent-oriented patterns for the purpose of sharing multiagent systems development experiences.

A Design Framework that Employs a Classification Scheme and Library for Compliant Mechanism Design

Olsen, Brian Mark 19 April 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Limited resources are currently available to assist engineers in implementing compliant members into mechanical designs. As a result, engineers often have little to no direction incorporating compliant mechanisms. This thesis develops a conceptual design framework and process that utilizes a proposed classification scheme and a library of mechanisms to help engineers incorporate compliant mechanisms into their applications. As the knowledge related to the synthesis and analysis of compliant mechanisms continues to grow and mature, and through the classification scheme established in this thesis, compliant mechanisms may become more extensively used in commercial mechanical designs. This thesis also demonstrates a design approach engineers can use to convert an existing rigid-body mechanism into a compliant mechanism by using the established classification scheme and a library of compliant mechanisms. This approach proposes two possible techniques that use rigid-body replacement synthesis in conjunction with a compliant mechanism classification scheme. One technique replaces rigid-body elements with a respective compliant element. The other technique replaces a complex rigid-body mechanism by decomposing the mechanism into simpler functions and then replacing a respective rigid-body mechanism with a compliant mechanism that has a similar functionality. These techniques are then demonstrated by developing and designing a competitive and feasible compliant road bicycle brake system.

A identificação arquivística como subsídio para a classificação : uma proposta metodológica para a prefeitura municipal de Marília /

Leme, Thalita Fernanda. January 2019 (has links)
Förenklade informationsklassificeringsscheman hos svenska statliga myndigheter / Simplified classification schemes at Swedish state agencies

Gustavsson, Fredrik January 2016 (has links)
Information is a vital part for most organizations, not least for state agencies as they handle personal data for every citizen, such as medical records, social security numbers and other sensitive information. It is therefore critical to protect the information assets at a sufficient level according to its value. Information security aims to do this by preserving the properties of confidentiality, integrity and availability of the information. This means that accurate and complete information shall be accessible and usable by an authorized entity upon demand. Swedish state agencies are obliged to manage their information security by the implementation of an information security management system (ISMS). The ISMS has to be set up and operated in compliance with the international standards ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 27002, but these standards are somewhat vague in describing how to perform certain procedures. One part of the ISMS consists of the process of classifying the information, a process that according to the result from a survey by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) is troublesome (MSB, 2014), especially for smaller-sized agencies. In this classification process, a classification scheme is used to determine the consequences to the organisation if the confidentiality, integrity or availability of the information is jeopardized. The result of this process determines the level of protection that each piece of information asset will receive at a later stage. It is vital to classify the assets at a suitable level to avoid over or under classification, as the former can lead to unnecessary costs and difficulties in using the assets, and the latter can put the asset at risk of unauthorized access. The interest from the academic world have however been low regarding research focused on the 27000 series of standards, compared to the more mature ISO/IEC 9000 and ISO/IEC 14000 series. This thesis project aims to investigate how the classification scheme has been simplified and to identify enabling factors from the development and use of simplified classification schemes. The research questions for this thesis project are: In which ways have a number of Swedish state agencies simplified their information classification schemes? Which factors have influenced the development and use of a simplified classification scheme? A mixed method, an embedded case study, was used, including both a review of existing information security policies for the state agencies to gather information about current information classification models and schemes, as well as interviews with the chiefs of information security for the state agencies regarding the development and usage of a simplified information classification scheme. In total, 120 documents from 81 agencies were reviewed and 7 interviews were completed. The results from the study shows that the state agencies that have simplified their classification scheme do so by focusing on one aspect: confidentiality. The agencies motivate this by a number of reasons: The aspects integrity and availability are regarded complex and difficult for the end user to relate to and classify. In order to simplify for the end user these aspects are handled by the IT department and the IT environment The integrity and availability aspects are more or less built into the IT environment and thus handled automatically as long as the end user correctly classifies the information asset according to the confidentiality aspect and handles the information according to the handling guidelines The study also shows the need for a national, common set of handling guidelines and consequence levels for the classification scheme as this would simplify and improve the security in communication between the state agencies

Trust as a factor in the information classification process

Andersson, Simon January 2021 (has links)
Risk management is an important part of every business. In order to properly conduct it, risk assessment and within it, information classification is needed. The information classification produces a list of information assets and states how they are valued within the organization. That is then used as an important part of the risk assessment process. In order to conduct such a valuation, users are consulted as they often times understand the value of information. However, using the CIA-Triad when communicating has proved to be difficult for users not knowledgeable in information security. Trust as a concept has been proven to have some connection to the concepts of the CIA-Triad and has been proposed as a possible translator in order to ease the communication of information value in the process of information classification. Semi-structured interviews were held with information security professionals in order to further understand the connection between the CIA-triad concepts and trust as well as to gain further understanding in the important parts of information classification. A thematic analysis showed how confidentiality and integrity are prominent factors that connect to trust, with availability, while still being mentioned as having a connection, was not as prominent. Further, the empirical data was used to build a model based on trust and importance that allows for a translation of the CIA-triad concepts. This resulted in a classification-scheme based model that allows trust as a concept to be used as a translator of the CIA-concepts, thus including trust as a concept in the information classification process.
