Biface reduction and blade manufacture at the Gault site (41bl323): a Clovis occupation in Bell County, Texas

Dickens, William A. 25 April 2007 (has links)
This dissertation is a technological study that deals with those techniques employed by the Gault Clovis people in the manufacture of both bifaces and blades. The materials studied were recovered during the 2000 and 2001 field seasons conducted by the Anthropology Department of Texas A&M University. The study involves an analysis that deals with raw material selection, blank production, reduction methods, and problems encountered, and includes a definitive description and metric calculations for each of the various artifact types analyzed. The results are then compared to similar artifact assemblages from known Clovis sites. The conclusions derived from this analysis show that the Gault Clovis people utilized a number of different strategies in both biface and blade reduction. It was found that some of these strategies, previously felt to be restricted to one reductive procedure, were connected and utilized in both procedures. In addition, it was discovered that some techniques thought to be limited to use only within the initial reduction sequence were, in fact, utilized throughout.

Geoarchaeological Investigation of the Coats-Hines Site (40WM31), Williamson County, Tennessee

Schmalle, Kayla Anne 16 December 2013 (has links)
The Coats-Hines site (40WM31) is a potential pre-Clovis site located in Franklin, Tennessee. The site rests, geographically, at the convergence of the Central Basin and Western Highland Rim. The site was discovered during the construction of a nearby golf course when a salvage team uncovered a mature female mastodon.. The site was later excavated in 1994-1995, during which time two additional mastodons were uncovered, in direct association with lithic artifacts. Preliminary radiocarbon dates reveal the site was deposited during the late Pleistocene epoch at roughly 12,000^(14)C yr BP. During the summer of 2012, the site was excavated with the goal of determining the depositional setting of the site and geographic region, as well as establishing the antiquity of the archaeological remains. The site geology was determined through field interpretation and texturing, micromorphological analysis, laboratory particle size analysis, and radiocarbon dating. Sedimentation at the site is a combination of cherty colluvium from upslope as well as alluvium. Four chronostratigraphic sequences of sedimentation were determined to have occurred during the last glacial, the Pleistocene-Holocene transition, the Holocene, and modern time periods. The volume, distribution, and composition of the nine defined stratigraphic units are dependent on the fluctuations occurring in the climate during these time periods. The climate changes and rates of deposition occurring at Coats-Hines were correlated to similar sites in the region. The Coats-Hines site was surveyed along the wet-weather drainage that bounds the site during in the spring of 2013. A channel unconformity was discovered, likely dating to the Pleistocene-Holocene transition and providing context to the 1994/1995 excavation.

Differential use of space: An analysis of the Aubrey Clovis site.

Witt, Benjamin A. 08 1900 (has links)
The Aubrey Clovis site is one of the oldest late-Pleistocene sites in North America, dated to ~11,550 B.P., and contains two camps with a range of lithic debitage, numerous hearths, and excellent faunal preservation. Couched in rules of classification, a series of artifact distributions are analyzed with qualitative and quantitative techniques, including maps produced in a geographic information system (GIS) and tests of artifact associations using correlation statistics. Theoretical and methodological protocols are promoted to improve spatial analysis in archaeology. The results support the short-term occupation interpretation and expose the differential patterning among bone, stone, and raw materials distributions. The spatial structure and diverse content of the site challenge models of Clovis-age people as strictly big game hunters.

Développement d'un implant à géométrie variable pour le traitement des fractures du fémur proximal chez les personnes âgées / Development of an adjustable implant for proximal femoral fractures in the elderly

Billard, Rémi 21 February 2014 (has links)
Proximal femoral fractures in the elderly are generally fixed with osteosynthetic devices. For specific fractures called intertrochanteric, it is possible to fix the fracture in an intramedullary way (inside the bone) or in an extramedullary way (outside the bone). For each type of treatment, hospitals are equipped with the two fixing systems. The differences in physical characteristics between individuals imply the existence of multiple references implants and therefore additional costs in terms of equipment. In this thesis work,an original implant adaptable to most people has been developed. This implant will provide surgeons greater flexibility during surgery but also significantly reduce stocks implants in hospitals. The mechanical behavior of the implant is studied in different cases of fractures by two complementary approaches,a finite element analysis and an experimental study employing stereo-image correlation technique from images of high speed cameras. The results of the numerical calculation are compared with those derived from tests on synthetic femurs, then cadaver in anatomy laboratory. Comparisons with existing implants show that this new implant concept allows for a more stable fixation of bone fragments and a good compression of the fracture.

Chlodoueci Aduentus : foi et politique en Gaule

Valente, Sylvie 20 December 2012 (has links)

Clovis Technology and Settlement in the American Southeast

Smallwood, Ashley Michelle 2011 August 1900 (has links)
This dissertation presents new data on Clovis site occupation, technological organization, and settlement in the American Southeast. Evidence suggests that traditionally-accepted, western-centric models do not fully explain Clovis technological characteristics and settlement patterns in the region. My second chapter presents the results of a 40 square meter block excavation on the Topper site (SC) hillside where a buried Clovis assemblage has been recovered. I review the site geomorphology and formation processes to evaluate the context of the Clovis component, characterize the Clovis assemblage and the horizontal distribution of artifacts to understand how the Clovis occupants used this portion of the site, and compare these excavation results to the rest of the archaeological record at Topper to discuss the general nature of the Clovis occupation there. My third chapter focuses on the 174 bifaces from Topper to understand biface production. I present the process of manufacture then measure the variation in production characteristics at the site in terms of our current knowledge of Clovis biface technology. I conclude that Topper flintknappers used reduction strategies typical of Clovis-but created a biface assemblage with greater flexibility in design than documented at most other Clovis sites. Clovis groups adapted to local resource conditions and adjusted the organization of their technology accordingly. My fourth chapter analyzes southeastern Clovis point data and biface assemblages from Carson-Conn-Short (TN), Topper, and Williamson (VA) to test the technological implications of Kelly and Todd’s (1988) high-technology-forager model and Anderson’s (1990) staging-area model. Significant subregional variation exists in Clovis biface systems, such as differences in point morphology and the tempo of biface reduction. This variation suggests the subregions represent distinct populations who distinctly altered aspects of their technology but maintained fundamental elements of the Clovis tradition. Ultimately, I demonstrate there was greater variability in Clovis behavior across America. Recognizing regional variation in the archaeological record is key to understanding the complexities of Clovis origins and dispersal.
