Análise da situação genética do condor-dos-andes (Vultur gryphus) no Equador / Analysis of the genetic situation of the Ecuadorian Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus)

Jorge Fernando Navarrete Mera 15 February 2017 (has links)
The Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus) is a scavenger bird of the New World vultures (Cathartidae) that lives along the Andes Mountains. Its population has declined in the last century until being considered an endangered species. In Ecuador, approximately 100 birds have been registered in freedom. To avoid extinction in this country has been initiated a conservation program involving several areas of biological sciences, one of these, population genetics. In order to describe the genetic situation of the condor in Ecuador, blood and feather samples from captive and wild condors, plus several samples of molted feathers from different locations were collected and analyzed through seven heteroespecific microsatellite amplified in the condor genome by PCR. The results show that the group of 72 samples had a moderate to low genetic diversity in the amplified loci, despite the large areas where it is distributed. The analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) and Hardy-Weinberg with heterozygote deficiency as alternative hypothesis denotes that sampled condors do not constitute an inbred population. Structuring analyzes suggest there is not subpopulations even among samples from distant places. If exist some kind of pop0ulation structure in the species, it could be like isolation by distance structured, but in order to prove this hypothesis, it is recommended to extend the research including samples from distant locations through Andean America and more powerful genetic markers. Those markers was also highly useful for the genetic identification of not assigned feathers collected in the habitat, but as paternity test require more polymorphic markers and better distributed throughout the genome.

Operation Condor : The U.S. involvement - A rational strategy or a political powerplay?

Hedman, Amanda January 2019 (has links)
During 1975-1989 a transnational state-terror operation was carried out by several South American states called Operation Condor. Declassified documents show that the U.S. government assisted the operation with communication and intelligence techniques. This case-study is with a theory consuming method aiming to analyze the internal decision process within the U.S. government to assist Condor. The analysis is based on two theoretical frameworks by Allison Graham, the “Rational Actor” and “Governmental Politics”. By studying the cold war doctrine, the objectives of the U.S. and the political actors behind the assessment the aim is to understand the structures that shaped the final decision. The conclusion shows that the Cold War, political crises and power relations between politicians played a major role in the internal decision process.

Nesting behavior in a reintroduced population of California condors

Sandhaus, Estelle A. 14 January 2013 (has links)
Studies in numerous animal taxa demonstrate that early rearing experience has a profound influence on the development of later adaptive behavior. This has implications for endangered species management, particularly when animals are reared in captivity for reintroduction or in cases in which species managers play an active role in managing animals at the individual or population levels. The California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) is a critically endangered New World vulture that was subject to a period of extinction in the wild followed by ongoing reintroduction in portions of its native range. Though the reintroduced population in southern California is largely adapting well, several obstacles to viability remain that are primarily anthropogenic in nature. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively assess nesting behavior of free-flying California condors in the southern California population to determine whether differences in parental care and nestling behavior are attributable to parental rearing conditions and experience. Hierarchical generalized linear modeling was used to analyze parent and chick activity budget data. Differences among condors were not detected in attendance patterns across either the egg or chick phases of nesting. Variation was not detected among chicks in proportion of time spent active and inactive during the early nestling phase. Variations among older nestlings in the proportion of time spent inactive were observed, with associations detected between inactivity, pair, visibility and season. The proportion of time that parents interacted with nestlings varied from nest to nest, with associations detected between interaction, visibility and season. Finally, potential pair-level variation in the propensity to bring microtrash to the nest was observed. It is concluded that while visibility is often overlooked in behavioral analyses, it is methodologically important to account for this variable in analyses of condor nestling behavior. Further, while some pair-level variation in allocation of care to nestlings is apparent, this appears to be a function of factors not related to individual developmental differences.

Martínez, Paula 29 December 2014 (has links)

________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This thesis has as subject the political repression on the frontier between Uruguaiana and Paso de los Libres, in the end of the 1970’s, specially the repressive connections among the dictatorships of Brazil and Argentina on this borderland. We analyzed cases of kidnapping/disappearance that occurred on this border between Uruguaiana – Rio Grande do Sul – Brazil and Paso de los Libres – Corrientes – Argentina. Our hypothesis is that repressive cooperation on the frontier was part of the Condor Operation, and we believe that operational activities linked to the repressive contract of the Condor occurred in both Uruguaiana and Paso de los Libres. The History of Present Time is the argumentative foundation of the thesis, and the analytical key is the National Security Doctrine, which provided the establishment of the State Terrorism implemented by the dictatorships of Brazil and Argentina with large repercussion on Southern Cone. To comply with that goal, we structured the thesis in three parts: the first discusses about those political overthrows on the Southern Cone and how the international repressive articulation of the Condor Operation happened; the second examine the history and the formal activities of bi-national connections that took place on the custom between those countries; the third is about the surreptitious activities that occurred on this border, who circulated and how the repression on that custom was structured. This thesis has six chapters that embrace the implementation of the National Security Dictatorships in Brazil and Argentina, the collaboration among them, the frontier as matter of study and the cases of kidnapping/disappearance of Lorenzo Ismael Viñas, Jorge Oscar Adur, Margarita Mengol Villas de Moroz and Cristina Gloria Fiori.

Construindo a Opera Condor : o pensamento composicional de Antonio Carlos Gomes / Constructing the Opera Condor : the compositional process of Antonio Carlos Gomes

Orientador: Lenita Waldige Mendes Nogueira / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-10T02:18:16Z (GMT). The study of the textual documents reveal that the compositional process included the elaboration of a piano vocal sketch, the orchestration, an extensive revision and a later inclusion of a ballet one year after the premiere. Analysis of the sketch, the initial document for the creation, reveal compositional alternatives that were discharged by Gomes when compared to the printed piano vocal score issued in 1891. With these textual documents and the autograph manuscript and the hard copies, it was possible to reconstruct many of these alternatives along the firs act, to analyze them and to propose possible reasons for such compositional options. It was also analyzed the exotic and oriental aspects due to the libretto and its musical treatment by Gomes. As a result, it is seen that Gomes has elaborated Condor in four phases: a piano vocal sketch, the orchestration, a revisions and addition of a ballet. The modifications introduced are related to the need of condensation of the musical discourse, reorganization of the harmonic discourse and optimization of the dramatic discourse in parallel to the musical discourse. The musical approach to orientalism in Condor is subtle and careful, without obvieties, but with enough density to create an effective ambience. It is found in Gomes a composer concerned with the quality of his final product and with expressive technical skills as an opera composer, attentive to the cultural / Doutorado / Doutor em Música

The Condor UAV System : A Concept Study

Ramirez Alvarez, Dennis André January 2016 (has links)
In this degree project in aerospace engineering, a preliminary design of a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) was performed. The UAV was intended to be used as a complement to the Swedish maritime administration’s helicopters, which cannot operate under limited visibility conditions. Its main mission would consist of surveillance. The UAV was therefore designed for some series criteria that were based on the customers’ requirements. The primary literature that was used was John D. Andersons Aircraft performance and design. Otherwise, historical statistical data from other aircraft was used and numerous assumptions were made. The result was a relatively small UAV named The Condor, weighing 25.6 kg with a wingspan of 2.5 m and operational in an altitude of 3500 m with a cruise speed of 81 knots. The UAV’s range is 70 nautical miles and is also able to operate in up to six hours. It should be able to manage a 300 m long runway. The chosen wing profile was the NACA 1412 with a maximal thickness and camber of 12 % and 1 % of the chord length, respectively. As for the stabilizer, the symmetric wing profile NACA 0012 was chosen. A so called constraint analysis was performed in order to determine the engine choice and thewing loading. The chosen engine was a 3.1 horsepower piston engine provided by Ricardo. The dimensions of the fuselage were designed only to fit the payload and no detailed analysis was done. It became 2.3 m long and with a maximal diameter of 0.3 m.

The sensitivity of the EMC algorithm to the light intensity and amount of diffraction patterns in diffraction experiments

Rogvall, Johanna January 2021 (has links)
To understand the function of macromolecules like proteins it helps to know the structure of the molecule. Coherent diffraction imaging is an emerging method that might be used to figure out the structures of macromolecules. In this method diffraction patterns of the macromolecule are recorded by shining light on the molecule from many unknown orientations and detecting the pattern of the diffracted photons. By assembling the diffraction patterns in a specific way and finding the phase of the photons that gave rise to the diffraction patterns, it is theoretically possible to obtain the electronstructure of the molecule and thus the molecular structure. The assembling of several thousand diffraction patterns representing unknown orientations of the molecule is hard to do by hand, but there are several methods that can be used. The EMC (Expand-Maximize-Compress) algorithm is one of those methods. It is an iterative algorithm that tries to create a model describing the Fourier Transform of the electron density of the molecule by maximizing each diffraction patterns fit to the model. This work examines how sensitive the EMC algorithm is to datasets with few diffraction patterns or a low intensity of the light being diffracted by the molecule, for the proteins phytochrome and lysozyme. The result of the work could be used to make sure enough data in collected in real experiments. Diffraction patterns simulated with the program Condor is used in this work, instead of diffraction patterns from real experiments.EMC finds the correct model when the data set contains about 1/3 fewer photons for the smaller more symmetrical molecule lysozyme than it does for phytochrome. This might be because the shapes in lysozymes diffraction patterns are larger than in phyochrome’s patterns. For phytochrome the EMC algorithm assembled the diffraction patterns correctly, with fewest photons for the light intensity 0.764 J/μm2 and 1250 diffraction patterns. For lysozyme it was with an intensity 1.910 J/μm2 and 1425 diffraction patterns. More investigation of the data is needed to understand what factors that affect the EMC algorithms ability to assemble the diffraction patterns correctly.
