The underlying basis of the communication difficulties of high functioning pervasive developmental disorder

This study aimed to explore the underlying basis of the communication difficulties in children (between 5.0 and 7.11 years) with high functioning pervasive developmental disorder (HFPDD) (n=26), compared to children with specific language impairment (SLI) (n=26), and children with no history of developmental difficulty (NDD) (n=26). The study looked at: whether different profiles could be obtained for the groups on comprehensive batteries of communication, cognitive processing and theory of mind; which areas measured were best correlated; and which measures best differentiated the groups. Comprehensive communication and theory of mind batteries were devised and conducted. Cognitive processing was measured using the Cognitive Assessment System (CAS) (Naglieri and Das, 1997). Data was analysed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, the Kruskal-Wallis test, Bonferroni t tests, frequency distributions, Pearson correlation coefficients and discriminant function analyses. Kappa coefficients and analysis of variance measures were carried out on 23% of the rated data in order to establish inter-rater agreement and acceptable levels of agreement were reached. On the communication assessment, the HFPDD group experienced the most difficulty on the measures of understanding abstract vocabulary, understanding conversation, pronoun alternation, higher level semantics, narrative ability and pragmatic ability. In contrast, the SLI group experienced the most difficulty on the measures of expressive grammar and narrative clarity. On the cognitive processing assessment, the HFPDD group experienced marked difficulty in the areas of planning and attention, while the SLI group experienced significant difficulty in the areas of successive processing and less marked but still significant difficulty in the area of planning. Within the HFPDD group, a group with simultaneous processing markedly stronger than successive processing, a group with successive processing markedly stronger than simultaneous processing, and a group with simultaneous and successive processing occurring at a similar level, were identified. The HFPDD group experienced significant difficulty on all the measures of theory of mind, although a limited number of HFPDD subjects did not experience difficulty. The SLI group experienced significant difficulty on the two theory of mind measures that were more verbally loaded. Strong correlations were found between receptive language, expressive semantics, narrative ability, pragmatic ability, planning, attention and theory of mind; and between expressive grammar and successive processing. Pragmatic ability, narrative ability, planning, and certain of the theory of mind measures best appeared to discriminate the groups. A combined model of language, cognitive and theory of mind processing is proposed to explain the differences between the HFPDD and SLI groups.

Comparing Learning Gains in Cryptography Concepts Taught Using Different Instructional Conditions and Measuring Cognitive Processing Activity of Cryptography Concepts

<div>Information security practitioners and researchers who possess sufficient depth of conceptual understanding to reconstitute systems after attacks or adapt information security concepts to novel situations are in short supply. Education of new information security professionals with sufficient conceptual depth is one method by which this shortage can be reduced. This study reports research that instructed two groups of ten undergraduate, pre-cryptography students majoring in Computer Science in cryptography concepts using representational understanding first and representational fluency first instructional treatment methods. This study compared learning results between the treatment groups using traditional paper-based measures of cognitions and fMRI scans of brain activity during cryptography problem solving. Analysis found no statistical difference in measures of cognitions or in cognitive processing, but did build a statistical model describing the relationships between explanatory variables and cryptography learning, and found common areas of cognitive processing of cryptography among the study’s twenty subjects.</div>

The General Abilities Index as a Third Method of Diagnosing Specific Learning Disabilities

Many studies have investigated problems with the ability achievement discrepancy (AAD) method of diagnosing specific learning disabilities (SLDs). The definition of an SLD includes the presence of a deficit in one or more cognitive processing systems. Researchers in other studies found that the AAD method overdiagnoses English language learners and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and underdiagnoses students with cognitive processing deficits. Although SLD diagnostic methods have been widely researched, much less information is available regarding SLD diagnostic methods that predict important student outcomes, such as high school completion. The General Abilities Index (GAI) is an SLD diagnostic method that can identify cognitive processing deficits. This study examined the relationships between cognitive processing deficits and the GAI method, high school completion status, performance on state standards assessments, and SLD eligibility. Using a multivariate, nonexperimental design, this study analyzed 149 datasets from records of students tested for an SLD between 1996 to 2013. A GLM analysis found that several types of cognitive processing deficits predicted math and writing performance on the state standards assessment and predicted not being diagnosed with an SLD, while the GAI method failed to predict any relationship with the dependent variables. Positive social changes from this study may include improved SLD diagnostic practices and improved educational interventions that target the cognitive processing deficits. Improved educational outcomes for SLD persons may reduce the high rates of unemployment, substance abuse, and incarceration experienced by the adult SLD population.

The Effects of Common Core State Standards in Mathematics on Inclusive Environments

The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) require students with learning disabilities in mathematics to use a range of cognitive, skills, and foundational numerical competencies to learn and understand complex standards. Students with learning disabilities in mathematics experience deficits in cognitive processes skills and foundational numerical competencies which have emerged as underlying barriers associated with mastering CCSSM. Examining the impact of high-stakes assessments on readiness for college and careers and student achievement may provide evidence that deficits in cognitive processing skills and numerical competencies can impact achievement levels. Using the cognitive theoretical frameworks of Bandura and Gagné, along with the concepts of cognitive learning, instructional interventions, and inclusion, the relationship between students' scores in the algebraic foundations (AF) intervention inclusion method and the regular algebra (RA) nonintervention inclusion method, as measured on the end of the year assessments were examined in this study. An ANCOVA design was used to test the statistical significance of the relationship between the two intervention methods and the use of cognitive and numerical competencies for the two groups and to analyze the disparity in achievement scores between the AF intervention inclusion method and RA nonintervention inclusion method. The results revealed a statistically significant relationship between cognitive processing skills and foundational numerical competencies as measured on the final exam for both methods. The intended audience include academic communities using evidence-based inventions to improve college and career readiness results, leading to positive social change.

Environmental And Individual Resources, Perception Of The Event, Cognitive Processing And Coping As Factors Leading To Posttraumatic Growth Among The Survivor Of Myocardial Infarction Patients And Their Spouses

Posttraumatic Growth (PTG), known as antithesis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) (Tedeschi, Park, &amp / Calhoun, 1998, p.3), has been highlighted in the literature as a positive outcome of the trauma.In the literature, environmental resources (e.g., social and familial support), individual resources (e.g., personality traits, socio-demographic variables), perception of the event (e.g., type of trauma, duration of trauma), cognitive processing (e.g. impact of event, religious participation), and coping (e.g. problem focused coping, emotion focused coping) were found as possible factors on the development of PTG. In the present study, a model to predict PTG in the patients suffering from myocardial infarction (MI / heart attack) and their spouses was tested on the basis of environmental and personal resources, the perception of the event and cognitive processing as latent variables. The model, developed by Schaefer and Moos (1998), was empirically analyzed for the first time with patients suffered from myocardial infarction and their spouses by structural equation model (SEM) using AMOS program. MI patients getting the treatment in various hospitals in the city of Bolu (N=151) and their spouses (N=137) completed the measures in 1.5-2 hours sessions. The analysis of the model with the MI patients&amp / #8217 / data revealed that both environmental resources and individual resources demonstrated indirect effects on PTG via the effect of the perception of the event, cognitive processing and coping. On the other hand, the analysis of the model for the spouses revealed that individual resources demonstrated indirect effects on PTG through the effect of the perception of the event, cognitive processing and coping while environmental resources did not show significant indirect effects on PTG.The findings were discussed in the context of recent theoretical models of PTG, shortcomings of the current study, clinical implications, and suggestions for future research.

Traitement cognitif des métaphores et de l’ironie verbale : étude comportementale et substrats neuronaux / Cognitive processing of predicative metaphors and verbal irony : behavioral study and neural bases.

L’objectif de cette thèse était d’explorer les bases cognitives et cérébrales des processus de compréhension du langage figuré via l’utilisation d’outils de neuroimagerie (EEG et IRMf). Nous nous sommes particulièrement intéressés aux processus inférentiels sémantiques et pragmatiques. Afin de mieux les cerner, nous avons étudié la compréhension de la métaphore verbale nouvelle (« catapulter ses paroles ») et de l’ironie verbale (« Il est détesté de tous. Cet homme est très populaire. »). Ce choix repose sur l’hypothèse selon laquelle chacune de ces figures sollicite spécifiquement un type de processus inférentiel ; de nature sémantique pour la métaphore et pragmatique pour l’ironie. Conformément à cette hypothèse, nos résultats indiquent que la compréhension des métaphores verbales nouvelles se fonde sur des processus de recherche et d’intégration d’informations sémantiques, supportant l’hypothèse d’un traitement séquentiel. L’examen des bases cérébrales du traitement de ces expressions précédées d’un contexte a mis en évidence des régions cérébrales postérieures, suggérant la mise en œuvre d’un processus de manipulation conceptuelle. Concernant le traitement de l’ironie, nous avons observé un processus tardif d’intégration d’informations plus important pour les énoncés ironiques comparés aux énoncés littéraux, suggérant un traitement pragmatique plus difficile. Enfin, nous avons mis en évidence un réseau fronto-temporal bilatéral lors du traitement de l’ironie, dont une part serait sensible au contraste entre le contexte et l’énoncé et à l’humour des énoncés. Nos résultats sont confrontés aux théories psycholinguistiques et cognitives du traitement du langage figuré. / Our main aim was to assess the cognitive and neural basis of the figurative language processing using neuroimaging tools (EEG and fMRI). We were especially interested in semantic and pragmatic inferential processes. In order to better grasp these processes, we have studies the comprehension of novel verbal metaphor (“to catapult his/her words”) and verbal irony (“Everybody thinks he is foul. He is a very popular man.”). This choice was based upon the hypothesis that each of these figurative expressions specifically engages one of the two inferential processes: semantic for metaphors and pragmatic for irony. Following this hypothesis, our results point out that the comprehension of novel metaphoric expression is built on the research and the integration of a semantic congruent information, supporting a sequential processing hypothesis. The assessment of the cerebral basis of the processing of such expressions embedded in a context has revealed regions in posterior areas, suggesting a conceptual manipulation process. Concerning the irony processing, we observed a greater late integration processing for ironic sentences than literal ones, suggestion a more effortful pragmatic processing. Finally, we observed a fronto-temporal network specific to irony processing. Some part of this network could be involved in both the contrast between the utterance and the context and the humor processing of the sentences. Our results are confronted with psycholinguistic and cognitive theories about figurative language processing.

The long-term psychosocial impact of breast cancer on young survivors and their partners

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Long-term psychosocial consequences of breast cancer are increasingly more important to study as survivors are living longer. However, the survivors do not experience cancer alone; their significant others often suffer just as much if not more than the survivors themselves. In this dissertation, we explore some long-term consequences of cancer within the context of the Social Cognitive Processing Theory (SCPT). SCPT proposes that an individual must be able to discuss their feelings in order to cognitively process a traumatic event, such as cancer. If discussions are hindered, in particular by a significant other, then one will be unable to work through his/her concerns, leading to poor psychological outcomes, such as depression and fear of recurrence. The purpose of this dissertation is to use SCPT to identify causal mechanisms of depressive symptoms and fear of recurrence using a large sample of young breast cancer survivors and their partners. For one paper, we also included a large set of older participants for comparison. This dissertation is divided into three distinct articles. Each article tests long-term consequences of breast cancer and its treatment on breast cancer survivors and their partners using SCPT to explain relationships. First we examine the hypothesized predictors of younger breast cancer survivors’ depressive symptoms including the partner variable of depressive symptoms. The second article addresses the partners by predicting their depressive symptoms using SCPT. The third and final article seeks to identify the relationship of predictors and FOR on both survivors and their partners again using SCPT. For survivors, structural equation modeling analyses found significant direct and indirect paths between depressive symptoms and theoretical variables, including social constraints (stb=.266, p<.001) and intrusive thoughts (stb=.453, p<.001). In partners, cognitive processing variables (intrusive thoughts and cognitive avoidance) mediated the relationship between social constraints and depressive symptoms (F(5,498)= 19.385, R2=.163, p<.001). And finally, cognitive processing mediated the relationship between social constraints and fear of recurrence both for survivors [F(3,213)= 47.541, R2=.401, p<.001] and partners [F(3,215)= 27.917, R2=.280, p<.001). The evidence from these studies supports the use of SCPT in predicting depressive symptoms and fear of recurrence in both long-term survivors and partners.
