Modeling And Stabilization Control Of A Main Battle Tank

Karayumak, Turker 01 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
In this study, a parametric model for a main battle tank electric gun turret drive system stabilization controller has been developed. Main scope was the study of the muzzle deviation due to barrel flexibility. Traverse and elevation dynamics has been modeled to include the drive-line and barrel flexibilities. Order of the models has been kept large enough to cover the frequencies dominant in the interest scope but at the same time low enough to create a parametric model which can be used in real-time fire control computers. Therefore a 5-dof elevation and a 7-dof traverse models have been implemented. These models have been used to design a classical feedback and feedforward controllers which performed good enough to meet 0.5mrad stabilization accuracies. After satisfactory results have been obtained from the stabilization controller, a special coincidence algorithm has been implemented by time-series analysis of the disturbance signal which is constantly being measured by the feedforward gyro. Necessity of predicting the future muzzle angular orientation due to the latency in fire is discussed and by using autoregressive modeling of the disturbance signal, future values of the disturbance signal has been entered into the observer model. The prediction horizon has been set to the time delay value between the trigger is pulled by the gunner and the ammunition exit from the muzzle. By checking the future coincidence within a very narrow windowing (0.05mrad) a 100% first round hit probability in theory has been achieved. This is assured since the coincidence inhibited the fire signals which were to miss the aiming point with a large error.

Mechanism of failure by hydrogen-induced cracking in pipeline steels

2015 August 1900 (has links)
Pipeline steels that carry oil and natural gas in severe environments suffer from two important modes of failure: stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC). The SCC has been studied extensively in the literature; however, HIC phenomenon in pipeline steels is less investigated by researchers. Nevertheless, HIC is recognized as the most important damage mode in sour environment. Hydrogen atoms produced due to surface corrosion of the steel diffuse into it through microstructural defects. When a critical amount of hydrogen is accumulated in such defects, HIC cracks initiate and propagate. The main objectives of this thesis are to find the HIC crack nucleation and propagation sites, evaluate a role of texture and grain boundary character distribution in crack growth and finally establish the effect of different microstructural parameters contributing to the HIC related failure in pipeline steel. In this thesis, HIC standard test and electrochemical hydrogen-charging experiments were used to induce HIC cracks in pipeline steels. HIC cracks at the cross section of tested samples were observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The SEM observations clearly indicate that the investigated X60 and X70 steels are susceptible to HIC while the X60SS steel showed a higher resistance to HIC. This experiment also proved that the X70 steel has higher susceptibility to HIC than the other investigated steel. Energy dispersive spectroscopic (EDS) analyses indicated that two types of inclusion namely manganese sulfide and carbonitiride precipitates serve as crack nucleation sites. HIC cracks were observed to propagate at the center of cross section where the segregation of some elements such as carbon and manganese occurred. Moreover, two other experiments were carried out in order to evaluate the capability of pipeline steels for hydrogen-trapping. The first test, hydrogen-permeation experiment, showed that all pipeline steel specimens, such as X70, X60 and X60SS steels, contain both reversible and irreversible hydrogen traps. However, the density of traps at the center of cross section was higher than other regions in all tested specimens. The hydrogen-discharging experiments also showed that all specimens keep a considerable amount of hydrogen inside their traps. The hydrogen traps, based on their binding energy with the metal matrix, are categorized as reversible (weak) and irreversible (strong) traps and the roles of each type of traps are explained. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) measurements were done along the HIC crack in X70 steel after standard HIC test. The results showed that the {100} texture was strong while the {111} texture was weak. Some special texture components, such as the {110}, {332} and {112}, were observed after the HIC crack-stoppage. EBSD results also documented that fine grain colonies were prone to intergranular HIC crack propagation and IPF and PF, calculated in both sides of HIC cracks, showed the preferences of ND||<100> orientation. Both susceptible X60 and non-susceptible X60SS steel to HIC were compared based on the EBSD results. It was observed that the high amount of recrystallization fraction with no stored energy is one of the main reasons for a higher HIC resistance of X60SS steel to HIC. Moreover, Kernel Average Misorientation (KAM) data showed that the deformation is more concentrated in the as-received and HIC tested X60 specimens. The effect of hydrogen-charging during tensile/fatigue loading of X60SS steel was studied and it was observed that some HIC cracks at the cross section of X60SS steel were appeared after hydrogen-charging at stresses below the yield stress. Experiments were carried out to understand the effect of cold-rolling and annealing on HIC susceptibility in pipeline steels. The results documented that the {100} dominant texture is more pronounced in 50% and 90% cold-rolled and annealed specimens. The effect of different factors such as KAM degree and recrystallized fraction affecting HIC susceptibility on cold-rolled and annealed specimens was investigated. The obtained results showed that the cold-rolling and annealing process may not be considered as an effective method to increase HIC resistance in pipeline steels.

Experimental study on electron impact double ionization dynamics for atomic and small molecular targets at intermediate incident energy

Li, Chengjun 25 April 2013 (has links) (PDF)
In this work, different double ionization (DI) mechanisms of various atomic and molecular targets by electron impact at different intermediate incident energies have been studied by so-called (e, 3-1e) and (e, 3e) experiments. Four and five fold differential cross sections in angle and in energy have been measured and analyzed in a coplanar geometry. The experimental measurements are compared with both first order and second order theoretical model calculations. The results shows that the theories including second order mechanism (such as Two Step 2, TS2) are generally in better agreement with the experimental data than these only including first order mechanisms (such as Shake Off and Two Step 1). This demonstrates that under present kinematics, second order mechanism plays an important role or even dominates over first order mechanisms. Besides, all DI results are compared with the predictions of TS2 kinematical analysis developed by Lahmam-Bennani et al (2010). Most of the structures shown in the measured angular distribution can be correctly explained by the TS2 kinematical analysis predictions. Besides, we extend this model by including the recoil contribution in each step. Some structures which cannot be explained by the previous model are well explained by the extended TS2 kinematical model. The isoelectronic target structure influence in DI is investigated preliminarily. The (e, 3-1e) results on Ne and CH₄ indicate the differences under same kinematics. The data analysis is underway.

New methods for quantifying the synchrony of contraction and relaxation in the heart

Fornwalt, Brandon Kenneth 12 June 2008 (has links)
Synchronous contraction and relaxation of the myocardium is required to optimize cardiac function. Regional timing of contraction and relaxation is dyssynchronous in many patients with heart failure. Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is a highly successful treatment for dyssynchronous heart failure. Patients are currently selected for CRT using surface electrocardiogram QRS duration as a measure of dyssynchrony. However, up to 30% of patients selected for CRT show no improvement. This poor response rate may in part be explained by the poor correlation between mechanical dyssynchrony and QRS duration. Thus, better methods to quantify mechanical dyssynchrony in the heart may improve the poor CRT response rate. The overall goal of this project was to develop better methods to diagnose dyssynchrony in the left ventricle (LV). We developed two new methods with different approaches. The first method improved upon existing tissue-Doppler based echocardiographic diagnosis of dyssynchrony by utilizing a cross-correlation (XC) function to quantify dyssynchrony during post-processing as opposed to the quantitatively simplistic time-to-peak analysis that is currently utilized. The second method utilized standard cine cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) images to quantify the dyssynchrony in the flow of blood within the LV, which may represent a more direct, physiologically relevant measure of dyssynchrony. Specific aim 1 demonstrated that the new XC delay parameters can be quantified accurately with a stationary region of interest and therefore require significantly less post-processing time to calculate compared to the time-to-peak dyssynchrony parameters. Specific aim 2 showed that XC delays are superior to existing time-to-peak dyssynchrony parameters at discriminating patients with LV dyssynchrony from those with normal function. The time-to-peak parameters showed dyssynchrony in approximately half of the normal, healthy volunteers while the XC delay parameters had nearly perfect diagnostic accuracy. The results of specific aim 3 showed that XC delays could diagnose acute, pacing-induced dyssynchrony in young, healthy children with 79% accuracy while the time-to-peak parameters showed accuracies of 71%, 57% and 57%. Specific aim 4 showed that CMR-based quantification of LV internal flow can be used to discriminate patients with dyssynchronous heart failure from normal controls with 95% accuracy.

Samples of potassium nitrate and natural sulphur were irradiated in the IPEN/CNEN-SP IEA-R1 research reactor core, operating between 3.5 and 5 MW, to determine the thermal neutron cross sections and resonance integrals of 34S(n,)35S and 42K(n,)43K reactions. The neutron flux was monitored with gold-aluminium alloy. The activities induced in targets of gold-aluminium and potassium nitrate were measured with a high purity germanium detector. Sulphur targets activities were determined with a 4\\pi\\beta-\\gamma coincidences system by the tracer method. Flux depression, self-shielding and self-absorption in the targets was evaluated by simulations using the MCNP software. The PENELOPE software, also based on Monte Carlo method, was modified to simulate the behavior of the 4\\pi\\beta-\\gamma coincidence system. The Westcott formalism and the cadmium ratio method were used to determine epithermal and thermal neutrons flux as well as the thermal cross sections and resonance integrals of both nuclides. A statistical analysis of the uncertainties was performed and the covariance between the results was determined, including those arising from the uncertainties of the gold reference standard. The results were compared with experimental values and theoretical predictions obtained by other authors. The 34S(n,)35S and 42K(n,)43K reactions had, respectively, thermal cross sections of 228(14) mb and 44.8(9) b, and integral resonances of 144(6) mb and 1635(75) b. These results are incompatible with the obtained with theoretical calculations. The 34S(n,)35S reaction thermal cross section agrees with values obtained by other authors, within the experimental uncertainties.
