COLLABORATIVE DESIGN PEDAGOGY: A NATURALISTIC INQUIRY OF ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION

McPeek, Keith T. 2009 May 1900 (has links)
This research examines interviews conducted with more than a dozen authorities in architectural education on collaborative methodologies utilized in the design studio and identifies factors that inhibit and facilitate the incorporation of collaborative methods in the context of situated learning. This research explores the notion that the design and implementation of even the simplest architectural projects are almost exclusively collaborative endeavors requiring the expertise of a spectrum of individuals working together to achieve a singular goal. Each of these experts is highly trained in their respective areas, yet few are formally trained authorities in the skills of collaboration, including architects, individuals who are often put at the lead of design projects which include people of varied backgrounds, working styles and areas of expertise. Historically, the education of an architect has been a highly individualized pursuit, focused on the development of an individual skill set seldom requiring collaboration beyond that of student and professor. While this individualized, hands on approach to education has been highly revered by many, it often falls short of its potential and fails to recognize that the greatest design accomplishments of humankind have been the undertaking of collaborative enterprise. Furthermore, architecture students are being prepared in a manner that is contrary to the highly collaborative nature of the architectural practice they will enter without taking away from the inherent strengths of the traditional architectural education. Despite NAAB requirements for collaborative methods in the classroom, and an increasingly collaborative model of professional practice for architects, design education continues to trail woefully behind other disciplines such as business, law, nursing and medicine; each having long ago integrated collaborative study models into their curriculum. This research examines how collaborative methods including intradisciplinary, interdisciplinary and community based collaborations, can be further integrated as a formal part of the overall design curriculum and what factors facilitate and inhibit this inclusion.

In an inclusive dialectical perspective, this actionresearch highlights the learning process of students with special educational needs. It is divided in four chapters in which all the theoretical and practical aspects are enlaced and completed by one another. The first chapter describes all methodological paths, which began with an Opening Seminar and ended with an Empirical Study. The second chapter deals with the organization of the collaborative study group, which was formed by six (6) educators who agreed to participate. In the third chapter the conclusions of the studies are described, and show how they guided a new way of planning lessons which is based on the tenets of the historical-critical pedagogy and the historical-cultural theory (LEONTIEV, A.N. 2004, 2012, 2012a; SAVIANI, D. 1991, 2012; VIGOTSKII, L. S. 1994, 2001, 2012). The fourth and last chapter concludes the research with the description and the analysis of the empirical study developed in the classroom of one of the teachers/participants of the Primeiro Ano 1 (First Degree 1). All the work aimed at explaining how, in each phase of the research, the teachers assimilated the critical theories of education, untied their practices from some old concepts and created lesson plans that, through practice founded theoretically, served as base for the organization, application and reelaboration of literacy activities. Mediated by the teachers, in an inclusive dialectical process, collaborative tasks were developed in small groups of students, thus creating a positive interdependent teaching and learning process among the less and the more experienced peers.

This study is part of a field research conducted in a regular public school, which proposes an inclusive education for deaf students, mediated by a collaborative teacher, operating under a collaborative approach. Concerning the inclusive context, not only is the LIBRAS (ASL) a language, but primarily an enabling communication tool in the teaching and learning process among deaf and hearing. Our main aim in carrying out this research was seeking the answer to our initial question of how the inclusion of deaf students may be achieved in math classes at school, a place that has a great deal of diversity. Due to our anxiety in seeking information on the possibilities of inclusion of deaf students in math classes, we are willing to observe in a school, which already develops this method, which the real prospects of the inclusion are, especially among deaf students. Based on this initial idea, we investigated if the inclusion actually works and how it works. Our job is to collect data on regular visits to that school, where we joined a classroom which became the focus of our observations. We made use of both resource field notes and videos made by the collaborative teacher, who is also a subject of our research by being an instrument of information regarding our analysis. After collecting the information needed, we conducted a case study based on Vygotsky’s theory. It was intended to describe the observations and analyse the data collected in the field, contributing to the understanding of the inclusive educational perspective as a possible and viable reality in the city of Juiz de Fora – MG.

Do ensino em linha ao ensino online: perspectivas para a educação online baseada na mediação professor-aluno / From in line education to online education: perspectives for online education based in teacher-student mediation

Galasso, Bruno José Betti 17 October 2013 (has links)
The present paper has as object of study online education, presenting the main elements of collaborative online education, aiming at questioning the characteristics of virtualization, interaction, collaboration and mediation, which represent key factors for theoretical and empirical understanding of this modality of teaching. In this context, this thesis contributes to the debate on the subject in its theoretical and methodological aspects, seeking to understand how this method can support the teaching in an appropriate and significant way, through the discussions on the technologies used, as well as the necessary skills of the teacher mediator. For this, we performed a literature search regarding the elements essential to collaborative online education and theories of interactional learning associated with this modality. Then, the paper presents a case study, developed based on a statistical analysis of correlation, extracted through a closed questionnaire applied to higher education students. Moreover, the case study also brings a qualitative analysis, based on the open-ended responses of the students. Based on the outcomes of this study, we could conclude that there are some basic requirements for the success of this educational modality. Among the main requirements are the resources the virtual education environment offers, as well as the interaction and collaboration between students and the role the teacher plays in this environment. These elements constitute the foundation of online education, because they represent the means for educational action to occur. From this harmony between the available technology and the role of the teacher comes the trump card of online education, which is the interaction between the agents of education. This form of organization allows the creation of a virtual community that is based on the theories of interactional learning, supporting key aspects of online education, such as social presence and collective construction of knowledge.
