Successful Korsten land claimants have been granted land in Fairview through the land restitution programme. The successful resolution of land claims has shown the democracy and development in the country of South Africa.

The Karretjie People, or Cart People are a peripatetic community and are descendants of the KhoeKhoen and San, the earliest inhabitants of the Karoo region in South Africa. As a landless and disempowered community they are dependent upon others for food and other basic necessities specifically, and other resources generally. Compared to children in South Africa generally, the Karretjie children are in every sense of the most severely deprived. Their fathers are by and large sheep-shearers, often their only specialised skill, and which is primarily required only on demand and on an irregular and/or seasonal basis. The children’s mothers as keepers of the karretjie (cart) overnight shack, with other adult caretakers, are without predictable income for most of the year. The service that the adult men deliver to the farming community necessitates continuous spatial mobility and is made possible by a cart and donkeys, which also enable them to adapt to changing circumstances. High levels of spatial mobility as well as economic demands on individual domestic units result in inventive utilisation of scarce resources and entails, amongst others, in children oscillating between different karretjie (cart) units.

Interaction between ethnicity and entrepreneurship in South Africa : Case study of Naledi MunicipalityArko-Achemfuor, Akwasi January 2013 (has links)

(Business Administration)) -- Central University of technology, Free State, 2013 / This study was carried out to examine the interaction between ethnicity and entrepreneurship in a South African setting. Specifically, a survey using a questionnaire was carried out to determine the influence ethnicity has on entrepreneurial behaviour and attitudes among the Tswana, Afrikaner, Coloured and Indian entrepreneurs in the Naledi Local Municipality in the North West Province of South Africa.
A literature review preceded the empirical study to fully comprehend the theoretical and conceptual underpinnings of the interaction between ethnicity and entrepreneurship among different ethnic groups. In the empirical study phase, a questionnaire was administered to 400 randomly selected entrepreneurs in order to collect data on their motives for starting business, source of start-up capital and their attitudes/behaviours regarding risk in business. Waldinger et al.'s (1996) structure, enclave, cultural and situation theories were used as the theoretical base. Out of a total of 400 questionnaires that were distributed, 338 were usable representing an 84.5% response rate.
The chi-square tests found significant differences (p < 0.05) between the four ethnic groups on all the key dimensions of ethnicity on entrepreneurship and the success/performance of the four ethnic groups in business. The chi-square test shows that businesses operated/owned by Afrikaner and Indian ethic groups are more likely to perform better than those owned and operated by their Tswana and Coloured counterparts.

Deur haar meelewendheid word veral die milieugestremde Bruinkind se menswaardigheid
erken. Baie bruinleerders het aangedui dat onderwyseresse rolmodelle vir hulle is.
Sommige onderwyseresse word verplig om jarelank dieselfde graad te onderrig.
Aangesien hulle so 'n betekenisvolle rol in die volwassewording van die kind speel, is
dit nodig dat hulle ervaring opdoen van die verskillende grade in die skool. Die vrou is baie veelsydig en het moontlikhede wat tocreikcnd aangewend kan word in
al die fasette van die skoolopset. Sy kan '11 baie belangrike bydrae lewer in die
organisasie en administrasie van die skool as sy die geleentheid gebied word. Haar
ingesteldheid op die menslike en die belangrikheid van gesonde verhoudinge asook haar
hoe pligsbesef dui daarop dat die onderwyseres by magte is om 'n uitstekende

vooruitsigte in die onderwys.
Aanbevelings vir praktykverbetering asook verdere navorsing is gemaak. / The Coloured woman in education has a particular role to play, especially in the life
of the child growing towards adulthood as well as in the school in general. The aim of
this investigation is to determine that role.
Relevant information had been obtained by means of literary sources, autobiographical
texts, interviews and questionnaires.
Having obtained this information, it was established that the circumstances in which a
large proportion of Coloured female educators work, are not always favourable. Many
coloured learners live in socio-economic disadvantaged areas where crime and
gangsterism prevail. Value systems, lifestyles of the subculture, inadequate material
care and a serious lack of education are causing disruptions of learners' inclination
towards the school.
Being a woman enables the female educator to show considerable empathy in her
pedagogic communication with the learners. She endeavours to sufficiently provide in
their needs. As pedagogic accompanist she assists the learner to see every milestone that
he/she achieves as the basis for another. Her involvement brings about an
acknowledgement of the human dignity of the milieu-deprived Coloured child. Many
coloured learners have indicated that their female educators are their role models.
Some female educators are compelled to teach the same grade for years. Their
significant role merits experience of teaching the various grades at school.
Women are very versatile and have potential which can be utilized adequately in all the
facets of the school situation. They can make very important contributions towards the
organisation and administration of the school as a whole, given the opportunity. Their
focus on human nature and the importance of sound relationships as well as their high
sense of duty are indicative of the ability female educators have to become excellent
leaders in education. They are nevertheless under-represented in educational
management positions.
Although the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, is based on the
principles of equality and human dignity, sexism is still a stumbling block in the path
of female educators.
Recommendations for an improvement m educational practice as well as further

kultuurvermenging - iets wat die geloofsgemeenskap van Eersterust se begrafnisritueel
weerspieel. Die begrafnisritueel het nie in Eersterust ontstaan nie, maar is daar uitgebou - soos
die toevoeging van die troosmaal na die begrafnis. Wat by 'n afsterwe in Eersterust opval, is
die geweldige kollektiewe gemeenskapsbetrokkenheid vanaf afsterwe tot met die troosmaal.
Daarna kom dit abrup tot 'n einde. Die fokus van die studie is drieledig. Eerstens word gekyk
na die ontstaan van die begrafnisritueel. Daarna kom twee vrae aan die orde: Wat is die
betekenis van die begrafnisritueel vir die geloofsgemeenskap? Watter invloed het die ritueel op
treurendes binne die geloofsgemeenskap wat doodsverlies moet verwerk?
Die eerste vraag weerspieel 'n gemeenskap se trots op wat binne 'n gegewe historiese en sos10-
politieke situasie vermag kan word. Binne hul verhaal van swaarkry le die spore van 'n
alternatiewe gemeenskapsverhaal met 'n sterk eskatologiese duiding. Die tweede vraag wek
ambivalente gevoelens. Sommige medenavorsers voel die hulp aan die treurendes is hopeloos
te min. Ander getuig weer van bystand aan treurendes na 'n afsterwe. Oor een aspek is daar
eenstemmigheid: Die geloofsgemeenskap sal maniere moet vind om die bestaande pastorale
sorg aan die treurendes nog beter te doen.

The illness experience of HIV-infected low-income Coloured mothers in the Winelands region : theoretical and practical implicationsHerbst, Elsa 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (DPhil (Psychology))—University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / Statistics show that young, heterosexual, low-income women are the fastest growing HIVinfected
population in South Africa and in the rest of the world. Despite the rapidly
growing numbers of women with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and AIDS (acquired
immune deficiency syndrome), there is a scarcity of research that focuses primarily on how
poor minority and disadvantaged women of colour experience being HIV-positive, how
these women actually live and cope with their diagnosis. Furthermore, no research studies
on minority groups, such as the Coloured women in the Western Cape, exploring these
issues have been reported. Consequently, there is an urgent need for research studies in
South Africa to explore the range of discourses revealed by low-income and minority
women regarding their lives and experiences of HIV/AIDS, in order to generate
understanding and knowledge which could contribute to possible interventions, support
and care.
The present study aimed to: 1) explore the psychosocial concerns and mental health needs
of HIV-infected low-income Coloured mothers in everyday life; 2) construct a testable
Grounded Theory regarding the illness experience of low-income Coloured mothers; and 3)
recommend guidelines for health workers. The study was a systematic analysis and
documentation of how the illness (HIV/AIDS) was constructed in narratives of one
particular group of women in South Africa.
Eleven suitable and willing HIV-infected Coloured mothers were recruited by means of
convenience and theoretical sampling. The research study was conducted within a socialconstructionist
framework where the focus was on how HIV-infected, low-income Coloured
women make sense of their world and illness experience. Grounded Theory was applied
within the framework of qualitative research to analyse the data and to explore the
participants’ constructions of the illness. As qualitative measure, a semi-structured in-depth
interview schedule was developed according to Grounded Theory protocol. To reach the
aims of the present study, questions focused on specific behaviours, experiences, thoughts
and feelings that related to living with a positive HIV-diagnosis. In the participants’ accounts of their illness experience, two dominant discourses were
identified: a discourse of HIV/AIDS, within which the illness was constructed as an
stigmatised, incurable and deadly illness; as a shameful illness that someone should be
blamed for; and as being associated with secrecy, silence, separation, pain and suffering,
loss, and loneliness, as well as a discourse of mothering, what it means to be a “good”
woman/mother; constructed as someone that should primarily take care of her children
and family, and not be separated from them, or neglect or abandon them through illness
or death. It is suggested that the two dominant discourses found in the participants’
accounts of their illness experiences, namely the meaning of HIV/AIDS as an illness (a
stigmatised, incurable, and deadly illness, a shameful and blameworthy illness, an illness of
secrecy, silence, separation, pain and suffering, loss, and loneliness), and the imperatives
of mothering, what it means to be a “good” woman/mother (the primary caregiver of
children, someone who is connected, physically strong, healthy and productive, and
someone who is able to cope with her caregiving responsibilities even when in distress
herself) are irreconcilable.
It seems that these distressing and disempowering experiences of being HIV-infected,
while also being a primary caregiver and mother of children, caused the participants in the
present study severe psychological distress and suffering. Given these discourses and the
context of the participants’ lives within their specific socio-economic circumstances, namely
their lack of emotional and social support from friends and family, abusive relationships,
substance abuse, economic hardships, absence of treatment options, as well as their
experience of an incapacitating, incurable, stigmatised illness causing them severe physical
and psychological distress, it was argued that the majority of the participants in the
present study were in some state of depression and were in need of psychosocial support
and mental healthcare.
