Percepção e impacto no fotojornalismo. Fotografia e comunicação

Este trabalho trata de uma pesquisa de recepção baseada na fenomenologia do Princípio da Razão Durante. Ele teve como objetivo observar a relação entre o observador e a fotografia, e se pergunta: o que ocorre nesse processo? De um lado, ele considera que a comunicação acontece apenas no receptor, que ela é individual e intransponível, dependendo de certa abertura para o mundo, de certa percepção. De outro, que na fotografia o que se destaca é sua parte vívida, que também depende da percepção. No início, o trabalho ressalta as características híbridas da fotografia, como algo entre arte e documentação. O recorte aqui é a fotografia jornalística, que levanta questões para se pensar o que é a fotografia em geral. No segundo capítulo, faz-se uma aproximação entre a teoria e o Acontecimento comunicacional, a saber, a comunicação propriamente dita. Por último, o trabalho apresenta o relato obtido como resultado da observação realizada na exposição de fotojornalismo World Press Photo. / This work deals with a research based on the phenomenology of the Principle of Reason During. He\'s aimed to the observation of the relationship between the viewer and the photograph, and asks: what happens in this process? On one hand, he believes that communication happens only at the receiver, it is individual and impassable, depending on certain openness to the world, in a sense. On the other, he believes that in the picture what stands out is its vivid parts, that also depends on perception. At first, the work highlights the hybrid features photography as something between art and documentation. Detached here is the journalistic photography, posing questions to think about what is photography in general. In the second chapter, is made an approximation between theory and communicational Event, namely the communication itself. Finally, the paper presents a report obtained as a result of the observation made in photojournalism exhibition of World Press Photo.

A essa leitura opõe-se Brian Massumi, que sugere a observação literal e restrita ao espaço performático. A análise, baseada na Semiótica de Peirce, segue três etapas: a primeira, descritiva, demora-se nos fundamentos do signo; a segunda intenta delinear o objeto, que se prolonga do espaço performático à realidade contígua e imbrica sobre a futuridade pós-humana. Na terceira, observam-se os efeitos interpretativos nas categorias de primeiridade, secundidade e terceiridade, com ênfase no legissigno instituidor das corporeidades conectadas, base de uma sugestão de modelo classificatório que, ao considerar o caráter relacional do ciberespaço, destaca o modo como se dão os contatos sociais em Stelarc e como influenciam a subjetividade. A proposta complementa o modelo de Massumi, fundado no automatismo força atuante corpo ação transduzida. As relações em Stelarc são eminentemente táteis, viscerais, em que o corpo torna-se arena de manifestação do comportamento híbrido, coletivo, fractal. À luz da Pragmática, observar-se-á o interpretante stelarciano em seu poder de alterar a visão de mundo do intérprete e seus hábitos de sentimento, ações e pensamentos. Será analisada, portanto, a capacidade do signo artístico de incentivar o crescimento da razoabilidade concreta, ao estimular a busca do Summum Bonum, ideal estabelecido pela Estética e executado pela Lógica, sob a direção da Ética. Por fim, a pesquisa identifica elementos que validem a leitura simbólica a partir de critérios objetivos respaldados nos fundamentos e na referencialidade do signo, somados à experiência colateral do intérprete. Na presente pesquisa, foram consideradas as teorias de Peirce sobre semiótica, a partir das observações de Gambarato, Fernandes, Serra, Tienne e Santaella; de Hall, Freud, Lemos, Marcondes Filho, Rüdiger, Maffesoli sobre subjetividade e socialização; de Kerckhove, Lévy, Santaella e Domingues, como teóricos da cibercultura; e de Leão, Fernandes, Dery, Goodall, Jones, Kroker, Smith, Massumi sobre o universo stelarciano. / Trying to analyze in a semiotic view the Stelarc’s artistic production, the current research seeks elements that can legitimate the symbolic interpretation, hence fanciful, imaginary and utopian, of performances, observing them as signs of the human evolutionary process in the fight against obsolescence. Brian Massumi, in opposition to this reading, suggests the literal and restricted observation of the performative space. The analysis, based on Peirce’s Semiotic, follows three stages: the first one, descriptive, stays on the sign features. The second, intends to outline the object, which prolongs from the performative space until the contiguous reality and overlaps the posthuman futurity. On the third one, the interpretative effects on the firstness, secondness and thirdness are observed, laying emphasis on the legisign as founder of the connected corporities, which are the base of a suggestion to a classifier framework when, considering the cyberspace relational aspect, emphasizes the way how the social contacts in Stelarc are settled and how they influence the subjectivity. The proposal completes Massumi’s pattern based on the automatism acting force body transduced action. In Stelarc, the relationships are priorly tactile, visceral, where the body becomes arena of expression of the hybrid, collective and fractal behavior. Under the pragmatic aegis, the Stelarcian interpretants will be analyzed in its power of changing the interpreter’s world perception, and his/her habits of feeling, action and thought. The artistic sign capacity to motivate the growth of the concrete reasonableness will be scrutinized, by stimulating the Summum Bonum search, which is established by the aesthetic and executed by the logic, under the ethic leading. Finally, the research identifies elements that confirm the symbolic reading that follows objective criteria supported by both, the features and the referentiality of the sign, added to the interpreter’s collateral experience. This current research has considered the theories of Peirce, about Semiotic, according to Gambarato, Fernandes, Serra, Tienne and Santaella; of Hall, Freud, Lemos, Marcondes Filho, Rüdiger, Maffesoli about subjectivity and socialization; of Kerckhove, Lévy, Santaella and Domingues, as theoreticians of the cyberculture; and of Leão, Fernandes, Dery, Goodall, Jones, Kroker, Smith, Massumi about the Stelarcian universe.

Understanding the effects of Twitter-based crisis communications strategies on brand reputation

Ellis / The Situational Crisis Communications Theory (SCCT) states that what organizations say to various publics during a crisis should influence the extent of the reputational and financial damage a crisis can inflict on the organization's image. Past research has focused on distinguishing types of crises and what crisis-communication strategies should be used with traditional media. Research exists, but looks at social media and its effects on brand reputation during a crisis via case studies or is an experimental design focused on the information source. There is a lack of controlled experimental studies that investigate the role of social media in crisis-communications strategies. Guided by Coombs’ Situational Crisis Communications Theory, this controlled experimental design employed a 2x2 factorial design. The independent variables were (a) type of crisis (preventable, accidental) and (b) type of response (rebuild, diminish) used on Twitter. The dependent variable was organizational brand reputation. Survey participants were recruited through a paid Qualtrics panel who were millennials that live in Midwestern states. Specific research questions were RQ 1: Will all participants begin with the same pre-test score; RQ 2: Is there a time effect on brand reputation; RQ 3: Does an accidental crisis change brand reputation; RQ 4: Does a preventable crisis change brand reputation; RQ 5: Does brand reputation change vary by crisis type? Based on findings in previous research, hypotheses developed were: H1: Brand reputation will be consistent from pre-brand to post-brand test for matched crisis responses; H2: Post-brand tests for unmatched accidental responses will be consistent with or better than pre-brand tests; H3: Post-brand tests for unmatched preventable responses will be lower than pre-brand tests. The findings from this study give insight to how SCCT translates to Twitter. In this study, matched responses did not maintain reputation as the SCCT literature suggests. In addition, the accidental unmatched condition did not perform better than the matched condition. However, unmatched preventable did have a bigger decline in brand reputation than matched, suggesting it could be better to have no response than the wrong response in some situations. This study confirms the need for practitioners to understand the crisis type prior to responding and understand the role of social media in communication. Throughout the study, it was found that using an unmatched response could cause a decrease in brand reputation. This is especially true when using a low-attribution response for a high-attribution situation, as the response will fall short of what the crisis requires.

The existing literature has discussed crisis communication as a tool to minimise reputational damage to a company in the event of a crisis. The Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) provide guidelines for managers in times of crises on how to protect their reputational assets and their corporate image in specific crisis situations with a set of communication strategies. The theory emphasise the importance of stakeholders in a crisis since they could oppose as a threat to companies´ reputation. Despite the realisation of stakeholders’ role in crisis communication, explorative studies aiming at understanding the consumer's perspective and how they prefer to be communicated are limited.   The purpose of this thesis is to understand, from consumers’ perspective, how companies should communicate in a time of crisis. This was done through using the existing Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) as a basis. The purpose was accomplished by conducting focus groups were crisis scenarios and strategies based on the SCCT played a fundamental role in generating results. The findings from the research suggest that there is a cycle explaining preferred crisis communication from consumers’ perspective. The suggested cycle includes three influencers that is: responsibility, communication, and reputation. This cycle suggest how consumers prefer to be communicated, what influences them to making that choice, and how it reflects back on the corporate image. The main finding of the research was the preferred communication in specific situations. The study showed that there is a set of generally applicable strategies, which consumers prefer in all crisis situations whereas additional preferences are added based on attributed responsibility.

abstract: An analysis is presented of a network of distributed receivers encumbered by strong in-band interference. The structure of information present across such receivers and how they might collaborate to recover a signal of interest is studied. Unstructured (random coding) and structured (lattice coding) strategies are studied towards this purpose for a certain adaptable system model. Asymptotic performances of these strategies and algorithms to compute them are developed. Viruset identifierades i staden Wuhan, Kina och smittspridningen förmodas komma från ett djur på en marknad som överförts till en människa. Kort därefter visade det sig att viruset hade förmågan att smittas från människa till människa och den 11 mars klassades viruset som en pandemi och viruset fick namnet Covid-19. Spridningen spred sig snabbt och snart hade hela världen påverkats av virusets framfart. För att hantera virusets spridning och lindra effekterna av coronapandemin är kommunikationen A och O och det finns uppmaningar att följa myndigheters råd och rekommendationer som omfattas av Folkhälsomyndigheten, Krisinformation och 1177. Det krävs däremot insatser, stöd och information om viruset på en mer lokal och regional nivå ur ett medborgarperspektiv.   Syftet med studien är att granska hur olika regioner kommunicerar en pandemi i sina digitala kanaler.

The diploma thesis Language and totalitarianism deals with the relation between these two phenomena. On the basis of key thinkers dealing with totalitarianism it formulates its own definition of totalitarianism. It presents the communication theory of Karl Wolfgang Deutsch, on which basis it points to the close relation between communication and political systems, concretely between language and totalitarianism. Language is analysed mainly on the thoughts of Ferdinand de Saussure and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Totalitarian language is explained using mainly Orwell's totalitarian language newspeak in 1984. A practical analysis of a sample of Rudé právo form the era of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia in the years 1948-1989 shows its manifestations in real use. At the end of the thesis political correctness is introduced as an example of totalitarian tendencies in liberal democracies.

Multiterminal Source-Channel Coding

Cooperative communication is seen as a key concept to achieve ultra-reliable communication in upcoming fifth-generation mobile networks (5G). A promising cooperative communication concept is multiterminal source-channel coding, which attracted recent attention in the research community. This thesis lays theoretical foundations for understanding the performance of multiterminal source-channel codes in a vast variety of cooperative communication networks. To this end, we decouple the multiterminal source-channel code into a multiterminal source code and multiple point-to-point channel codes. This way, we are able to adjust the multiterminal source code to any cooperative communication network without modification of the channel codes. We analyse the performance in terms of the outage probability in two steps: at first, we evaluate the instantaneous performance of the multiterminal source-channel codes for fixed channel realizations; and secondly, we average the instantaneous performance over the fading process. Based on the performance analysis, we evaluate the performance of multiterminal source-channel codes in three cooperative communication networks, namely relay, wireless sensor, and multi-connectivity networks. For all three networks, we identify the corresponding multiterminal source code and analyse its performance by the rate region for binary memoryless sources. Based on the rate region, we derive the outage probability for additive white Gaussian noise channels with quasi-static Rayleigh fading. We find results for the exact outage probability in integral form and closed-form solutions for the asymptotic outage probability at high signal-to-noise ratio. The importance of our results is fourfold: (i) we give the ultimate performance limits of the cooperative communication networks under investigation; (ii) the optimality of practical schemes can be evaluated with respect to our results, (iii) our results are suitable for link-level abstraction which reduces complexity in network-level simulation; and (iv) our results demonstrate that all three cooperative communication networks are key technologies to enable 5G applications, such as device to device and machine to machine communications, internet of things, and internet of vehicles. In addition, we evaluate the performance improvement of multiterminal source-channel codes over other (non-)cooperative communications concepts in terms of the transmit power reduction given a certain outage probability level. Moreover, we compare our theoretical results to simulated frame-error-rates of practical coding schemes. Our results manifest the superiority of multiterminal source-channel codes over other (non-)cooperative communications concepts.

Asian American Cultural Identity Portrayal on Instagram

Though more recent Asian American representation in media has been lauded, the majority of portrayals have been considered to be stereotypical misrepresentations. Because negative media representations can have a detrimental impact on people's self-concepts and their views of others, it is important to understand how Asian Americans are representing their own identities online. In order to understand how Asian Americans are negotiating their own ethnic, racial, and national identities online, constant comparative analysis was employed to examine patterns and themes in the visual and textual communication of Asian American Instagram posts. Their cultural identities were communicated as a cultural blending, which included the use of Asian, American/Western, and Asian American cultural values, products, and behaviors. Together, these factors provided insight into the construction and communication of a multilayered identity, mirroring the process of the communication theory of identity. This study indicates that multicultural identity analysis can be applied to visual texts and Instagram can provide more fluid, authentic representations of identity despite its inability to account for internal multicultural identity conflict. Further, not only are values, products, and behaviors components of culture, but they are also facets of identity that can be portrayed visually.

Enhancing the person-centered care system through digital communication tools by applying a user-centered approach to a hospital environment

Digital technologies are becoming increasingly common tools in our daily lives. We use it for finding information, but also to communicate with people all over the world. With a vision to strengthen Swedish healthcare's digital resources, Sweden has made major efforts in this area. Improved living conditions have changed the demographic situation as people grow older, which in turn places higher demands on healthcare efficiency. Being able to meet these demands has made digitalization of healthcare increasingly important, but also demonstrating new challenges such as participation, transparency and usability. The purpose of this study has been to investigate if communicative tools can be created to facilitate nurses work with person-centred care and to enhance patients' positive experiences of their own care. The study is based on interviews and observations with nurses working within orthopaedic sections and employees working in facility management as well as administration within the hospital. The results show that digital solutions can be effective tools for enhancing person-centered care, but with automated solutions the physical encounter between nurses and patients can be reduced. The concepts that have been developed are two mobile applications. They were developed with the intention to make it easier for nurses to document and communicate patients' activity and care plans.
