Enduring character : the problem with authenticity and the persistence of ethos

This dissertation is interested in how people talk about character in a variety of public spheres. Specifically, it explores the tangled relationship between authenticity and ethos, or what is taken as the distinction between intrinsic and constructed character. While this dissertation does not presume to settle the question of authenticity’s actuality, it does discuss the ways authenticity cues in rhetorical acts continue to influence how “sincere character” in those acts is understood, even as audiences exhibit shrewdness in recognizing that character is a purposeful manifestation of the rhetor. The fundamental phenomenon this dissertation seeks to describe is how people, with better and worse success, negotiate the dissonance between valuing character as authentic and as presentation and representation. Character in this view is a much richer and more paradoxical concept than many discussions of the term admit. A too-diluted study of ethos limited strictly to pinpointing credibility in an argument makes it difficult to articulate why an exhibition of character sometimes works and sometimes flops. Ethos in its fullest complexity is, and is not, constructed by any single act; it is the consequence of narratives, both of those narratives, and also what we say about those narratives; it is something we know about a rhetor, at the same time that it comes from what the rhetor claims to know; it is, most important, an appeal to authenticity, even when we know ethos is discursively, kairotically, and socially constructed. This dissertation offers an expanded definition of ethos as rhetorical transactions that rhetors and audiences mutually negotiate in order to determine the extent to which all sides will have their rhetorical needs met, and the extent to which all sides can assent to the those needs. The dissertation, using the works of Wayne Booth, Kenneth Burke, and Chaïm Perelman as its primary theoretical structures, offers pedagogic implications for these mutual negotiations. / text

Parameter Optimization Of Steel Fiber Reinforced High Strength Concrete By Statistical Design And Analysis Of Experiments

This thesis illustrates parameter optimization of compressive strength, flexural strength and impact resistance of steel fiber reinforced high strength concrete (SFRHSC) by statistical design and analysis of experiments. Among several factors affecting the compressive strength, flexural strength and impact resistance of SFRHSC, five parameters that maximize all of the responses have been chosen as the most important ones as age of testing, binder type, binder amount, curing type and steel fiber volume fraction. Taguchi and regression analysis techniques have been used to evaluate L27(313) Taguchi&amp / #65533 / s orthogonal array and 3421 full factorial experimental design results. Signal to noise ratio transformation and ANOVA have been applied to the results of experiments in Taguchi analysis. Response surface methodology has been employed to optimize the best regression model selected for all the three responses. In this study Charpy Impact Test, which is a different kind of impact test, have been applied to SFRHSC for the first time. The mean of compressive strength, flexural strength and impact resistance have been observed as around 125 MPa, 14.5 MPa and 9.5 kgf.m respectively which are very close to the desired values. Moreover, this study is unique in the sense that the derived models enable the identification of underlying primary factors and their interactions that influence the modeled responses of steel fiber reinforced high strength concrete.

These are important characteristics to electrical contacts, microwave absorber and heat skinks. However, the low wettability of Ta under Cu liquid and insolubility mutual these elements come hard sintering this composite. High-energy milling (HEM) produces composite powders with high homogeneity and refines the grain size. This work focus to study Ta-20wt%Cu composite powders prepared by mechanical mixture and HEM with two different conditions of milling in a planetary ball mill and then their sintering using hydrogen plasma furnace and a resistive vacuum furnace. After milling, the powders were pressed in a steel dye at a pressure of 200 MPa. The cylindrical samples pressed were sintered by resistive vacuum furnace at 10-4torr with a sintering temperature at 1100?C / 60 minutes and with heat rate at 10?C/min and were sintered by plasma furnace with sintering temperatures at 550, 660 and 800?C without isotherm under hydrogen atmosphere with heat rate at 80?C/min. The characterizations of the powders produced were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and laser granulometry. After the sintering the samples were analyzed by SEM, XRD and density and mass loss tests. The results had shown that to high intense milling condition produced composite particles with shorter milling time and amorphization of both phases after 50 hours of milling. The composite particles can produce denser structure than mixed powders, if heated above the Cu melting point. After the Cu to arrive in the melting point, liquid copper leaves the composite particles and fills the pores / O comp?sito Ta-Cu alia a alta resist?ncia mec?nica do Ta com a alta condutividade t?rmica e el?trica do Cu. Estas s?o caracter?sticas importantes para contatos el?tricos, absorvedores de microondas ou dissipadores de calor. The HEM can be used to synthesize composite powders with high homogeneity and fine size particle distribution. It may also produce the solid solubility in immiscible systems such as Nb-Cu, or extend the solubility of systems with limited solubility. Therefore, in the immiscible system Cu-Nb, the high-energy milling was successfully used to obtain the composite powder particles. Initially, the formation of composite particles during the HEM and the effect of preparation technique on the microstructure of the material was evaluated. Four loads of Nb and Cu powders containing 20%wt Cu were synthesized by MAE in a planetary type ball mill under different periods of grinding. The influence of grinding time on the metal particles is evaluated during the process by the withdrawal of samples at intermediate times of milling. After compaction under different forces, the samples were sintered in a vacuum furnace. The liquid phase sintering of these samples prepared by HEM produced a homogeneous and fine grained. The composite particles forming the sintered samples are the addition of a hard phase (Nb) with a high melting point, and a ductile phase (Cu) with low melting point and high thermal and electrical conductivities. Based on these properties, the Nb-Cu system is a potential material for many applications, such as electrical contacts, welding electrodes, coils for generating high magnetic fields, heat sinks and microwave absorbers, which are coupled to electronic devices. The characterization techniques used in this study, were laser granulometry, used to evaluate the homogeneity and particle size, and the X-ray diffraction, in the phase identification and to analyze the crystalline structure of the powders during milling. The morphology and dispersion of the phases in the composite powder particles, as well the microstructures of the sintered samples, were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Subsequently, the sintered samples are evaluated for density and densification. The addition of natural fibers to polymers represents an alternative in the partial or total replacement of glass fibers in composites. In this work, carnauba leaf fibers were used in the production of biodegradable composites with polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) matrix. To improve the interfacial properties fiber / matrix were studied four chemical treatments to the fibers..The effect of the different chemical treatments on the morphological, physical, chemical and mechanical properties of the fibers and composites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, tensile and flexural tests, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), thermogravimetry (TGA) and diferential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results of tensile tests indicated an increase in tensile strength of the composites after the chemical treatment of the fibers, with best results for the hydrogen peroxide treated fibers, even though the tensile strength of fibers was slightly reduced. This suggests a better interaction fiber/matrix which was also observed by SEM fractographs. The glass transition temperature (Tg) was reduced for all composites compared to the pure polymer which can be attributed to the absorption of solvents, moisture and other low molecular weight molecules by the fibers / O uso de mat?rias-primas de fontes renov?veis para a produ??o de materiais vem sendo objeto de diversos estudos e pesquisas, devido ao seu potencial na substitui??o de derivados petroqu?micos. Neste trabalho, fibras da folha de carna?ba (Copernicia prun?fera) foram utilizadas na produ??o de comp?sitos biodegrad?veis com matriz de polihidroxibutirato (PHB). Para melhorar as propriedades interfaciais fibra/matriz foram estudados quatro tratamentos qu?micos, para as fibras. O efeito dos diferentes tratamentos qu?micos nas propriedades morfol?gicas, f?sicas, qu?micas e mec?nicas das fibras e dos comp?sitos foram investigados por microscopia eletr?nica de varredura (MEV), espectroscopia no infravermelho, difra??o de raios-X, ensaios mec?nicos de tra??o e flex?o, an?lise din?mico-mec?nica (DMA) e an?lises t?rmicas por termogravimetria (TG) e calorimetria explorat?ria diferencial (DSC). However, the application of non-destructive techniques using magnetic sensors for the evaluation these materials is not possible since the materials are non-magnetizable. Ferrites are materials with excellent magnetic properties, chemical stability and corrosion resistance. Due to these properties, these materials are promising for the development of polymer composites with magnetic properties. In this work, glass fiber / epoxy circular plates were produced with 10 wt% of cobalt or barium ferrite particles. The cobalt ferrite was synthesized by the Pechini method. The commercial barium ferrite was subjected to a milling process to study the effect of particle size on the magnetic properties of the material. The characterization of the ferrites was carried out by x-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). Circular notches of 1, 5 and 10 mm diameter were introduced in the composite plates using a drill bit for the non-destructive evaluation by the technique of magnetic flux leakage (MFL). The results indicated that the magnetic signals measured in plates with barium ferrite without milling and cobalt ferrite showed good correlation with the presence of notches. The milling process for 12 h and 20 h did not contribute to improve the identification of smaller size notches (1 mm). However, the smaller particle size produced smoother magnetic curves, with fewer discontinuities and improved signal-to-noise ratio. In summary, the results suggest that the proposed approach has great potential for the detection of damage in polymer composites structures / Materiais comp?sitos polim?ricos oferecem vantagens para v?rias aplica??es pela combina??o de propriedades como baixa densidade, elevada resist?ncia mec?nica e m?dulo de elasticidade espec?ficos e resist?ncia a corros?o. A caracteriza??o das ferritas foi realizada pelas t?cnicas de difra??o de raio x (DRX), microscopia eletr?nica de varredura (MEV-FEG) e magnetometria de amostra vibrante (MAV). Entalhes circulares com di?metros de 1, 5 e 10 mm foram introduzidos nos discos de comp?sitos com o aux?lio de uma broca para avalia??o n?o-destrutiva por meio da t?cnica de fuga de fluxo magn?tico (MFL). A abordagem apresentada permitiu identificar todos os entalhes introduzidos nos discos. Os resultados indicaram que os sinais magn?ticos medidos nos discos com a ferrita de b?rio sem moagem e de cobalto apresentaram boa correla??o com a presen?a dos entalhes. O processo de moagem por 12 h e 20 h n?o contribuiu para a melhor identifica??o de entalhes de menor dimens?o (1 mm). Entretanto, o menor tamanho de part?cula permitiu produzir curvas magn?ticas mais suaves, com menos descontinuidades e melhor rela??o sinal-ru?do. Although currently blades are typically produced using glass fiber reinforced composite materials, the tendency for larger size blades, particularly for offshore applications, has increased the interest on carbon fiber reinforced composites because of the potential for increased stiffness and weight reduction. In this study a model of blade designed for large generators (5 MW) was studied on a small scale. A numerical simulation was performed to determine the aerodynamic loading using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software. Two blades were then designed and manufactured using epoxy matrix composites: one reinforced with glass fibers and the other with carbon fibers. For the structural calculations, maximum stress failure criterion was adopted. The blades were manufactured by Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM), typical for this type of component. A weight comparison of the two blades was performed and the weight of the carbon fiber blade was approximately 45% of the weight of the fiberglass reinforced blade. Static bending tests were carried out on the blades for various percentages of the design load and deflections measurements were compared with the values obtained from finite element simulations. A good agreement was observed between the measured and calculated deflections. In summary, the results of this study confirm that the low density combined with high mechanical properties of carbon fibers are particularly attractive for the production of large size wind turbine blades / A pesquisa e desenvolvimento de p?s de aerogeradores s?o fundamentais para acompanhar o crescimento no setor de energias renov?veis em todo mundo. Apesar das p?s atualmente serem produzidas tipicamente com materiais comp?sitos refor?ados com fibras de vidro, a tend?ncia de aumento no tamanho das p?s, especialmente no setor offshore, cresce tamb?m o interesse por materiais comp?sitos refor?ados com fibras de carbono, devido ?s suas propriedades, como elevado m?dulo de elasticidade combinado com baixa densidade. Nesse trabalho um modelo de p? desenvolvido para geradores de grande porte (5 MW) foi estudado em escala reduzida. Foram realizados estudos num?ricos empregando t?cnicas de Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) para determinar o carregamento aerodin?mico na p?. Foram projetadas e fabricadas duas p?s com materiais comp?sitos de matriz ep?xi, sendo uma p? com refor?o de fibras de vidro e outra com fibras de carbono. Para os c?lculos estruturais, foi adotado o crit?rio de falha por tens?o m?xima. As p?s foram fabricadas pelo processo de Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM), t?pico para este tipo de componente. Uma compara??o do peso das duas p?s foi realizada, e a p? de fibra de carbono apresentou 45% do peso da p? de fibra de vidro. Ensaios est?ticos de flex?o foram realizados nas p?s para v?rios percentuais do carregamento de projeto e as deflex?es medidas foram comparadas com os valores obtidos nas simula??es num?ricas por elementos finitos. Uma boa concord?ncia foi observada entre os valores de deflex?o medidos e calculados. Em resumo, os resultados obtidos neste trabalho confirmam que a baixa densidade combinada com elevadas propriedades mec?nicas das fibras de carbono s?o atrativas para a produ??o de p?s de aerogeradores de grande porte

Strategies such as making blends and composites are promising alternatives to produce materials with different properties from those found in conventional polymers. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of adding the copolymer poly(ethylene methyl acrylate) (EMA) and cotton linter fibers (LB) on the properties of recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PETrec) by the development of PETrec/EMA blend and PETrec/EMA/LB blend composite. In order to improve the properties of these materials were added as compatibilizers: Ethylene - methyl acrylate - glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer (EMA-GMA) and maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PE-g-MA). The samples were produced using a single screw extruder and then injection molded. The obtained materials were characterized by thermogravimetry (TG), melt flow index (MFI) mensurements, torque rheometry, pycnometry to determinate the density, tensile testing and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The rheological results showed that the addition of the EMA copolymer increased the viscosity of the blend and LB reduces the viscosity of the blend composite. SEM analysis of the binary blend showed poor interfacial adhesion between the PETrec matrix and the EMA dispersed phase, as well as the blend composite of PETrec/EMA/LB also observed low adhesion with the LB fiber. The tensile tests showed that the increase of EMA percentage decreased the tensile strength and the Young s modulus, also lower EMA percentage samples had increased the elongation at break. The blend composite showed an increase in the tensile strength and in the Young`s modulus, and a decrease in the elongation at break. The blend formulations with lower EMA percentages showed better mechanical properties that agree with the particle size analysis which showed that these formulations presented a smaller diameter of the dispersed phase. The blend composite mechanical tests showed that this material is stronger and stiffer than the blend PETrec/EMA, whose properties have been reduced due to the presence of EMA rubbery phase. The use of EMA-GMA was effective in reducing the particle size of the EMA dispersed phase in the PETrec/EMA blend and PE-g-MA showed evidences of reaction with LB and physical mixture with the EMA / O desenvolvimento de novos materiais para atender as necessidades dos avan?os tecnol?gicos ? um desafio enfrentado por pesquisadores de todo o mundo. No que diz respeito aos materiais polim?ricos, estrat?gias como a confec??o de blendas e comp?sitos s?o alternativas promissoras para atender a demanda por materiais com propriedades diferentes das encontradas nos pol?meros convencionais. O objetivo deste trabalho ? avaliar o efeito da adi??o do copol?mero poli(etileno-acrilato de metila) (EMA) e da fibra de linter de algod?o (LB) nas propriedades do poli(tereftalato de etileno) reciclado (PETrec). Para isto, foram desenvolvidos a blenda PETrec/EMA e o comp?sito da blenda PETrec/EMA/LB. Com o intuito de melhorar as propriedades destes materiais foram adicionados agentes compatibilizantes: terpol?mero etileno-acrilato de metila-metacrilato de glicidila (EMA-GMA) e o polietileno enxertado com anidrido mal?ico (PE-g-MA). As misturas foram produzidas por meio de uma extrusora monorosca e, em seguida, moldados por inje??o. As caracteriza??es realizadas foram termogravimetria (TG), medida de ?ndice de fluidez (MFI), reometria de torque, determina??o da densidade por picnometria, ensaio de tra??o uniaxial e microscopia eletr?nica de varredura (MEV). Os resultados reol?gicos mostraram que a adi??o do copol?mero EMA aumentou a viscosidade da mistura e o LB reduziu a viscosidade da blenda PETrec/EMA. A an?lise por MEV da blenda bin?ria mostrou baixa ades?o interfacial entre a matriz de PETrec e a fase dispersa de EMA, assim como no comp?sito da blenda PETrec/EMA/LB, tamb?m observou-se uma baixa ades?o com a fibra de LB. Os ensaios de tra??o mostraram que o aumento da porcentagem de EMA diminuiu a resist?ncia m?xima e o m?dulo de elasticidade, e, para as formula??es com menor porcentagem de EMA verificou-se um aumento do alongamento na ruptura. O comp?sito da blenda apresentou um aumento na resist?ncia m?xima e no m?dulo de elasticidade, e uma redu??o no alongamento de ruptura. As formula??es da blenda com menores porcentagens de EMA apresentaram propriedades mec?nicas melhores, que corrobora com as an?lises de tamanho de part?cula que mostraram que estas formula??es apresentaram menor di?metro m?dio de fase dispersa. Os resultados de ensaios mec?nicos do comp?sito da blenda mostraram que essa mistura resultou em um material com maior resist?ncia mec?nica e rigidez do que a blenda PETrec/EMA, cujas propriedades foram reduzidas em fun??o da fase borrachosa EMA. Its use comprises various applications including the coating of walls and the production of internal seals and linings. Moreover, the fibers are being increasingly incorporated into arrays fragile in an attempt to improve the properties of the composite by reducing the number of cracks, the opening of the same and its propagation velocity. Other properties, depending on the function of the component material or construction, among these thermal and acoustic performances, are of great importance in the context of buildings and could be improved, that is, having better performance with this embodiment. Conduct a comparative study of physico-mechanical, thermal and acoustic composite gypsum incorporating dry coconut fiber, in the form of blanket, constituted the main objective of this work. Improving the thermal and acoustic performances of precast gypsum, used for lining and internal vertical fences of buildings, was the purpose of development of these composites. To evaluate the effect of fiber content on the properties of the composites were used to manufacture the composite layer with different thicknesses. The composites were fabricated in the form of plates with dimensions of 500x500x24mm. To facilitate the comparative study of the properties were also made with material gypsum boards only. We then determined the physico-mechanical, thermal and acoustical plaster and composites. The results indicated that the composites were significant gains in relation to thermal performance and also acoustic, in certain frequency range, increasing the thickness of the blanket. Concerning other physical-mechanical properties, the results showed that although the compressive strength was lower than for the composite did not occur after a fracture catastrophic failure. The same trend was observed with regard to resistance to bending, since the composites have not suffered sudden rupture and still continued after the load supporting point of maximum load / A utiliza??o do gesso, um dos mais antigos materiais de constru??o, pela ind?stria da constru??o civil no Pa?s, vem experimentando um sens?vel e constante crescimento, em fun??o do seu baixo custo e de algumas de suas propriedades que lhe conferem vantagem comparativa em rela??o a outros materiais ligantes. Sua utiliza??o compreende diversas aplica??es entre as quais o revestimento de paredes e a confec??o de veda??es internas e de forros. Por outro lado, as fibras v?m sendo, cada vez mais, incorporadas em matrizes fr?geis, na tentativa de melhorar as propriedades do comp?sito, atrav?s da redu??o do n?mero de fissuras, da abertura das mesmas e da sua velocidade de propaga??o. Dependendo da fun??o do material ou do componente da constru??o, os desempenhos t?rmico e ac?stico, assumem grande import?ncia no contexto das edifica??es e tamb?m poderiam ser melhoradoscom a incorpora??o de fibras. Dentre as fibras vegetais, a fibra de coco seco apresenta um grande potencial, superior ?s vantagens comparativas das demais fibras, tal como uma maior resist?nciafrente ? alcalinidade caracter?stica das matrizes ciment?cias. Realizar um estudo comparativo das propriedades f?sico-mec?nicas, t?rmicas e ac?sticas de comp?sitos ? base de gesso com incorpora??o de fibra de coco seco, sob a forma de manta, constituiu-se no objetivo geral deste trabalho. Para tanto os materiais comp?sitos foram confeccionados em forma de placas, pain?is sandu?ches, com dimens?es de 500x500x24mm, sendo as camadas externas constitu?das pelogesso e a central (recheio) pela manta de fibra de coco seco. Para avaliar a influ?ncia do teor de fibras nas propriedades dos comp?sitos foram utilizadas na confec??o dos mesmos mantas com espessuras de 8 e 10 mm. Para possibilitar o estudo comparativo das propriedades foram tamb?m confeccionadas placas apenas com gesso. Foram ent?o determinadas as propriedades f?sico-mec?nicas, t?rmicas e ac?sticas do gesso e dos comp?sitos. Os resultados indicaram que para os comp?sitos ocorreram ganhos significativos em rela??o aos desempenhos t?rmico e tamb?m ac?stico, na faixa de frequ?ncia de 102,28 Hz a 1.150,00 Hz, ganhos esses crescentes com a espessura da manta. Em rela??o ?s demais propriedades f?sico-mec?nicas, os resultados mostraram que embora a resist?ncia ? compress?o tenha sido inferior para os comp?sitos, as fibras apenas evitaram um rompimento brusco, uma vez que as mesmas n?o atuam como refor?o para esse tipo de solicita??o. O mesmo comportamento ocorreu em rela??o ? resist?ncia ? flex?o, uma vez que os comp?sitos n?o sofreram ruptura brusca e ainda continuaram suportando carga depois do ponto de carga m?xima
