Transformation of the Competence Indicators into Teaching Objectives for Elementary School For the First, Second, and Third Learning Stage in the Area of ¡§Person-Space¡¨

The goal of this research is to investigate the common properties of the transformation of the social studies area competence indicator into teaching objectives for elementary school. The competence indicators for the first, second, and third learning stage in the area of ¡§person-space¡¨ were considered in this research. The method of content analysis was used to compare the corresponding teaching objectives amongst a collection of textbook for these competence indicators. A number of surveys were conducted using a Delphi based questionnaire to gather the opinions of elementary school curriculum developers, textbook publishers and reviewers, and the field teachers on the transformation of the competence indicators for the first, second, and third learning stage in the area of ¡§person-space¡¨ into the corresponding teaching objectives contained in these textbook. The main findings of this research are following: 1.The transformation are usually made by first analyzing the level of competence and the core concept aspects of the competence indicator and then followed by the actual construction of the feasible teaching objectives derived based on the results of such analysis. 2.For the elementary school social studies area of ¡§person-space¡¨, the transformations of the competence indicator for the area subject axis made by the various editor groups of these textbook were different not only in the number but also in the feasibility and concept of the resulting teaching objectives. The different might be resulted from the various approaches took by the editor groups to analyze and interpret the indicators. 3. Three survey, each using a Delphi based questionnaire, were conducted to gather opinions on the transformations made for the social studies area of ¡§person-space¡¨ from the curriculum expert and scholars, textbook editors and publishers, textbook reviewers, and elementary school field teachers. The result indicated that the four groups gradually gained the consensus on the transformations made for a total of 20 competence indicators and the resulting teaching objectives. For the analysis of competence indicators, all four groups achieved the agreement in the aspect of competence; and in the aspect of core concept, all four groups achieve the mutual agreement in all but three core concepts. As for the analysis of teaching objectives, all four groups obtained the consensus in all but eight of the objectives. 4. Additional analyses using the ANOVA method were performed for those core concepts and teaching objectives that the agreement was not reached. The results of comparison indicated that the group of curriculum experts and scholars and the group of elementary school field teachers were significantly different in the approval degree aspect. The group of curriculum experts and scholars and the elementary school field teachers were significantly different in the teaching objectives aspect. Finally, based on the findings of this research, some suggestions on the transformation of the competence indicators for the first, second, and third learning stage in the elementary school social studies area of ¡§person-space¡¨ will be proposed and made available to the field teachers, curriculum developers, textbook publishers and the reviewers, and the later researchers for their reference.

A Study of Teachers' Perceptions of Writing Instruction at Junior High Schools

Writing instruction has been ignored in junior high school in Taiwan. Since teachers and schools have started to focus on communicative ability, should writing gain more attention in junior high schools? The pedagogical practices are assumed to be determined by teachers¡¦ perceptions, beliefs and attitudes. Therefore, this study aims to examine teachers¡¦ perceptions of English writing instruction, what factors they believe are crucial, and what measures are recommended to improve it. Besides, the study investigates teachers¡¦ attitudes toward assessing students¡¦ writing ability in the entrance exam. Finally, this study also intends to explore whether public and private school teachers view certain issues differently. Questionnaires are administered to 57 English teachers in Taichung City and are analyzed by frequencies and the independent t-test. The findings show that either teachers or schools downplay the importance of writing instruction. Teachers find factors affecting their teaching include: students¡¦ language proficiency, students¡¦ motivation, and time and efforts spent to review students¡¦ writings. Also most teachers disapprove to include a writing test in the entrance exam. Possible measures to improve writing instruction are suggested: ability grouping, reducing the number of classes to teach, adopting more appropriate teaching materials, and avoiding a test-oriented curriculum.

In recent years, the rapid change of business climate, has cause a dramatic increase in investment risk throughout the world. The days of exponential growth and high profit margins are gone. Industries are facing an overly competitive environment and down-cycling in many sectors. Companies are focusing more on cutting costs, outsourcing manpower, shifting manufacturing to China, organizational downsizing in order to maintain a competitive edge. In the other hand, industry is transforming in ways like never before. New hiring practices and modern horizontal management structuring have given both managements and applicants a better outlook of working value. The concept of employee dispatching is gradually prevailing. However, what¡¦s the meaning and benefit of using outsourcing strategies to the employers? Case study is adopted in this research, and this is an exploratory study. We try to sketch the outline of the local dispatch method and compare the dispatched work agency and user enterprise in Taiwan. Furthermore, according to the above findings to foresee that how workforce outsourcing works in the near future. From this research, we can conclude that¡G 1¡BThe main considerations of company using dispatching workers are more focus on organizational flexibility and reduce the risk of hiring. 2¡BThe values of using dispatch workers are arising different benefits along with the scale of each organization, industrial nature and core competence of different businesses. 3¡BEmployers will measure the cost of hiring by themselves with the transaction cost of outsourcing before their decision of using dispatching workforce. 4¡BThe so-called ¡§Core Value¡¨ of each business which has few related to the ¡§difficulty¡¨ of the jobs, but mostly defined by business owners¡¦ recognition to the job function / position. 5¡BIn Taiwan, the outsourcing service is expecting to integrate with HR full functions to be a total solution provider or to develop in depth service to become a specialist. Then the outsourcing shall become not only a value-added service to the companies but also the strategy partner between both parties. This thesis investigates future English teachers&rsquo / experiences of learning English proverbs in Anatolian Teacher Training High Schools (ATTHS) in Turkey. In order to reveal the situation about proverb teaching in English language classrooms in ATTHS, students&rsquo / opinions are sought and coursebooks are analysed. In doing this, this study aims to find out EFL teacher trainees&rsquo / attitudes towards learning and teaching English proverbs, their conceptualization of proverbs, their thoughts about their knowledge and use of English proverbs, and perceptions about how sufficiently their English teachers and coursebooks at high school taught them English proverbs. This study also aims to uncover how the English coursebooks they used in ATTHS teach proverbs. To achieve these aims, a questionnaire is administered to 187 freshman ELT students / a semi-structured interview is conducted with volunteers and the coursebooks used by the majority are examined using an analysis form and a checklist. As a result, it is found that those teacher trainees have positive attitudes towards learning and teaching English proverbs, think that they do not have enough knowledge of English proverbs and that their English teachers and coursebooks did not teach proverbs sufficiently. Moreover, the participants&rsquo / conceptualization of proverbs reflects traditional definitions. Besides, coursebook analysis reveals that while the examined local coursebooks contain almost no proverbs at all, the analysed international coursebooks include a relatively bigger number of proverbs. However, except for some of the semantic and cultural aspects of proverbs, there is hardly any explicit reference to other aspects of proverbs in all the coursebooks examined.

The Efficiency and Feasibility Study on a Management Competence Assessment Center in Chunghwa Telecom: From Assessors¡¦ Point of View

Abstract This feasibility study is about setting up an assessment center in Chunghwa Telecom. The program is at the preliminary stage and thirty one assessors have been trained. The researcher asked those assessors to rank the importance of the forty core competencies identified for the target positions (section chiefs and center directors). Each assessor made the ranking twice: in theory (i.e., the ideal situation) and in practice. The template-matching technique was used to study the core competence fit between these two. The major empirical findings of the study are as follows: 1. There exists a general fit between the competencies for the ideal state and the practical state. 2. There are a few significant differences between the rankings for the two states. In nowadays, lower requirements for planning ability, judgment, training subordinates, and financial analysis, but higher requirements for persuasion, written ability, and body language. 3. There are age differences for the degree of fitness. 4. Those who have been certified as assessors have a stronger confidence in the assessment center.

ABSTRACT On Nov.11, 2001, Taiwan obtained the accession of World Trade Organization and became a formal member of WTO on Jan 1st of 2002. As a member of WTO, Taiwan has equal rights to participate in the setting of global trade rules as well as sharing the benefits of liberalization. In the meantime, Taiwan must fulfill its WTO commitments completely, whether resulting from its bilateral and multilateral negotiations or from its standard WTO obligations. The accession to WTO means to Taiwan a big impact on all aspects of its general economics, people¡¦s everyday living as well as industrial policies. After 35 years of development, Export Processing Zone (EPZ) has emerged from focusing on traditional labor-intensive industry to capital and technical intensive industry then to global logistic type of industry. Facing the impact of WTO, the need to make next transition is becoming even more urgent now. In an effort to upgrade the industry and strengthen the competence of the country, the government has assigned another responsibility on EPZ by expanding its range of function from pure manufacturing to high value-added economics activities like Off-Territory Shipment Center, Logistics Center, Software Design Center, etc. Mainland China obtained its WTO membership same time as Taiwan. They are leveraging their fast economic development and huge market potential to attract foreign and Taiwanese investments. Hence we can not exclude the influence of Mainland China while trying to discuss the WTO impacts on EPZ and how EPZ can face the big change of economic environment. This study has set following three topics: 1. The impact on EPZ as a result of Taiwan¡¦s accession to WTO. 2. What is the outlook of EPZ¡¦s new positioning. 3. Suggestions to the government, EPZ Administrations and Companies inside and outside of EPZ. This study will firstly make a brief review on both WTO and EPZ. Then explore the impacts, as well as the opportunities and threats, of WTO on both the industries in Taiwan and in EPZ. Then we will study the two major directions of EPZ¡¦s new positioning: (1) New developments as a result of new economic relationship between Taiwan and Mainland China, this includes Off-Territory Shipment Center, a base for China¡¦s companies to enter Taiwan, and the ¡§deep processing¡¨ that utilizes the advantage of integrating operations across the Taiwan Strait, and (2) New developments as a result of the expanding of EPZ¡¦s new service function, that includes R&D center, headquarter for off-shore Taiwanese companies, International Trade Companies, center for specific industry cluster and logistic center, etc. Based on the results of this study, we have made suggestions to the government, the EPZ Administration and companies inside and outside EPZ. The suggestions to the Government are: Try to form Free Trade Zone with Asia-Pacific countries and also form a ¡§Greater China Free Trade Zone¡¨ with Mainland China and Hong Kong under the condition that the political disputes are settled. Also to promote business opportunities in the developing countries by utilizing Taiwan¡¦s strengths of manufacturing and technology. Regarding the suggestions to the EPZ Administration and companies inside and outside EPZ, the suggestions are all regarding how EPZ can strengthen their service and improve the investment environment, and how companies are to fully utilize these EPZ improvements. The conclusion of this study shows following four items: 1. The accession of Taiwan to WTO is not only a crisis for EPZ, but also an opportunity. 2. EPZ has built up sound infrastructure and set the direction for its new positioning to face this challenge. 3. Whether the new positioning is fulfilled and new investment poured in will decide if the next phase transition of EPZ is successful or not. 4. EPZ acted as the pilot model for Taiwan¡¦s economic success 35 years ago, we are hoping it acts one more time the same model for Taiwan¡¦s next economic re-form.

However, the know-how IC design companies became main supporters of Taiwan IC industry already. In view of this, those high-tech IC design houses must surpass others in their organization and management. This research report tried to summarize those deeds to benefit others. The sponsors of this research are Etrend Electronics and Himax Technologies, which based on Tainan Science Park. Entrend Electronics is focus on DSP IC design, and Himax is producer of TFT-LCD component.This study will separate three sub-reports to describe following subjects: company¡¦s organization, company¡¦s goal and strategy, and core technology and product development. Besides,this study will also discuss the difference between those two companies from two points of view: why setup IC design house and the variance of technical strategy. This study reveals following new discoveries: 1. the sponsors are new tech followers, 2. The sponsors gain new tech via internal R/D, 3. Parent company or business group is userful for acquiring technology, 4. Patent is a way to protect core technology, but it is not best way, 5. HR will effect technical organization, 6. Quick market¡¦s occupation and product variance are company¡¦s product strategy, 7. No sponsors emphasize knowledge management. Finally, based on the research findings, this study proposes conclusions and suggestions for managers or entrepreneurs in the directions of strategy planning and decision-making.

ABSTRACT Along with the progress of science and technology and the development of information, the competitions between enterprises are becoming more and more intense which leads one to wonder how an enterprise can stand out among its numerous competitors. Therefore, one of the important challenges which determine how an enterprise could succeed is how to distribute its resources to create a core-competence for future business opportunities. It should also be able to find new application for its existing core competence. Not only that, for building its core competence an enterprise needs outstanding people and as such, how to manage its human resource to create core competence should also be an important theme. Most of the HR employment method only focuses on one particular group of people, hence overlooking the fact that different groups within an enterprise could be employed for different task. In view of this, this research is based on the constructive viewpoint mentioned by Prahalad & Hamel (1994) on core competence, together with Lepak & Snell¡¦s(1999) architecture of human resource. This research circles around four different stages ¡V maintenance of core competence, innovation of core competence, extension of core competence and development of new capabilities. It studies the types of method, relation and structure an enterprise should adopt in order to acquire the necessary HR and develop a HR strategic structure which could stand the test of time. Adopting an in-depth interview method, this research targeted a certain large scale English tutorial centre in Kaohsiung as the subject of study. It studied the human resource employment mode, relation and HR configuration adopted by this tutorial centre to build up its core competence. The result of this research showed: 1. Company A adopted internal development method, a business transaction or partnership type of relationship and market-base and commitment HR configuration to build its human resource on maintaining core competence. 2. In creating new core competence, Company A adopted internal development method as well as recruitment of talents method. Relationship adopted was that of business transaction and partnership type and HR configuration was that of market-base and commitment. 3. Method adopted for expansion of core competence was pretty much the same.
