Bittencourt, Juliano de Vargas January 2006 (has links)
The present study was developed with the goal of braiding the research in Human Computer Interaction – HCI with the Genetic Epistemology of Jean Piaget, in order to outline possible intersections between these theories in the context of a practical investigation. T For this purpose, this thesis, elected the development of a chat tool, with an isometric 3D interface, for children in the acquisition process of written language, named Cooperativa do Conhecimento, as an interesting problem in the field of HCI, that could be investigated with the piagetian theory. The study was based in the investigation of the child's cognitives process while in interaction with Cooperativa do Conhecimento and with a traditional chat. It was made a total of 18 experiments, each one consisting of a chat session, in a total of 32 primary school children. The results indicate that the interface proposal for Cooperativa do Conhecimento, developed in this study, fostered the development of the conceituation process, making, that the children stabilished the conversation as a possibility inside this environment earlier than in the traditional chat and understanded the necessary relations for this action.

Some of the questions which directed this study development are: how does the public teachers formation for the use of the TICs developed by NTE-Goiânia multipliers teachers happen? The courses offered by NTE Goiânia are based in which conceptions? Do the courses offer anything besides technical training? To answer these and other questions which appeared during the research, the Study of case was used in a historical dialectical perspective. In order to have a theoretical base we searched the contribution of Barreto (2001; 2004 and 2006), Belloni (2001; 2005), Castells (1996), Cysneiros (1999; 2000 and 2001), Dupas (2003 and 2000), Frigotto (1996, 2001), Kenski (2001; 2003), Pretto (2001; 2002 and 2006), Santos (2003), Silveira (2001), Souza (2004; 2006) and Toschi (2001). Thus, looking forward to reach the aims of the research and following the methodology chosen, I did the observation and analysis of the routine of the NTE and its professionals; collected and analysed documents related to the NTE and PROINFO; interviewed the multipliers teachers; followed up, reported and analysed a course offered by the NTE and coordinated by a multiplier teacher, in the semi- attended modality, among other activities related to the research and to the Study of Case. The research conclusion points to a short and in service formation, in the patterns proposed by the international organizations to finance the Brazilian Education; a contrast between a poor praxis and a modernization speech adopted by the state government concerning education; the adoption of semi-attended and in service courses to cheaper the formation and at last, the difficulties that the NTE Goiânia have had to insert the TICS in a critical and creative way in the public schools of Goiânia. Estes cursos vão além do treinamento técnico?

A graph-based framework for comparing curricula

Marshall, Linda January 2014 (has links)
The problem addressed in this thesis was identified in a real life context in which an attempt was made to re-constitute a BSc Computer Science degree programme. The curriculum was modelled on the ACM/IEEE Computing Curriculum of 2001. It was further required to comply with accreditation requirements as defined by ABET’s Computing Accreditation Commission. Relying on a spreadsheet, the curriculum was iteratively and manually evaluated against the ACM/IEEE curriculum specification. A need was identified to automate or at least semi-automate this process. In this thesis a generalisation of the problem is presented. Curricula are modelled as directed graphs (digraphs) in which graph vertices represent curriculum elements such as topics, knowledge areas, knowledge units year- levels or modules. Edges in the graph represent dependencies between these vertices such as belonging to grouping or pre-requisites. The task of curriculum comparison then abstracts to a task of digraph comparison. A framework, the Graph Comparison Framework, is proposed. The frame- work comprises of components which are used to guide the digraph comparison process. The so-called Graph Trans-morphism algorithm component is the only component in the framework which is mandatory. The algorithm converts the information from one of the digraphs being compared into the structure of the other. This conversion enables the graphs to be compared as graph isomorphisms. All digraphs are modelled as sets of triples, making it possible to subtract one digraph from another using the set minus operator. The resultant difference sets are used by components defined in the framework to quantify and visualise the differences. By modelling curricula as digraphs and applying the framework to the di-graphs, it is possible to compare curricula. This application of the framework to a real-world problem forms the applications research part of the thesis. In this part, domain knowledge of curriculum design is necessary to apply to the curriculum being developed in order to improve it. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / Computer Science / unrestricted

Equipping foundation-phase learners for successful computer-assisted instruction

Brummer, Lynette 07 1900 (has links)
Computers are excellent tools and assistants in foundation-phase classrooms. Computer-assisted instruction (CAI) influences the way teachers teach, as well as the way learners learn with regard to the curriculum. The responsibility for providing foundation phase-learners with educationally appropriate computer experiences in literacy, numeracy and life skills rests with the educators because the learners' progress in learning depends on the skills, attitudes and ingenuity of the educators, and the software they select for the learners. Educators should have the vision, the knowledge and the experience to introduce and apply CAI to benefit every learner in the didactic situation. Educators' general lack of knowledge and skills in this area has necessitated the compilation of didactic guidelines. The guidelines emerged from the literature that was consulted for this study. These guidelines should assist educators in providing successful CAI for learners. / Educational Studies / M.Ed.

Towards a model for teaching distributed computing in a distance-based educational environment

Le Roux, Petra 02 1900 (has links)
Several technologies and languages exist for the development and implementation of distributed systems. Furthermore, several models for teaching computer programming and teaching programming in a distance-based educational environment exist. Limited literature, however, is available on models for teaching distributed computing in a distance-based educational environment. The focus of this study is to examine how distributed computing should be taught in a distance-based educational environment so as to ensure effective and quality learning for students. The required effectiveness and quality should be comparable to those for students exposed to laboratories, as commonly found in residential universities. This leads to an investigation of the factors that contribute to the success of teaching distributed computing and how these factors can be integrated into a distance-based teaching model. The study consisted of a literature study, followed by a comparative study of available tools to aid in the learning and teaching of distributed computing in a distance-based educational environment. A model to accomplish this teaching and learning is then proposed and implemented. The findings of the study highlight the requirements and challenges that a student of distributed computing in a distance-based educational environment faces and emphasises how the proposed model can address these challenges. This study employed qualitative research, as opposed to quantitative research, as qualitative research methods are designed to help researchers to understand people and the social and cultural contexts within which they live. The research methods employed are design research, since an artefact is created, and a case study, since “how” and “why” questions need to be answered. Data collection was done through a survey. Each method was evaluated via its own well-established evaluation methods, since evaluation is a crucial component of the research process. / Computing / M. Sc. (Computer Science)

Um tiro no escuro: as estratégias e incertezas da inclusão digital no Brasil / A shot in the dark: the strategies and uncertainties of digital bridging in Brazil

Brito, Paulo Jorge Leal de 28 March 2005 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 paulo_brito.pdf: 674840 bytes, checksum: 7e8af7d18efdc331b641bba54aeb7a5e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2005-03-28 / This study aimed to investigate, in the available contemporary literature, the digital bridging in general, and specifically the access possibilities of brazilian citizens to new communication technologies the existence of such possibilities classifies an individual as digitally included . The study started with those theories that explain inclusion and exclusion. Digital exclusion (or digital divide), a set of interdictions that block the access of individuals to modern resources of digital communication, was found inside the social exclusion, and was studied so. The research on the subject regarding Brazil was performed preliminarily with some of the few works that were found on the theme, and then with the help of data surveys of IBGE on the possession of microcomputers, telephone lines and the availability of internet access, regarding not only individuals but households as well. Among our conclusions, we should remark these: 1) Brazil is needing more studies on this subject, since we found a good number of research on digital bridging in other languages and based on other countries but just a few in portuguese and regarding Brazil; 2) The main digital bridging actions have been done without any further assessment, what means that its results remain unknown; thus, it is impossible to tell if the knowledge acquired during these actions changes culture and behavior of an individual, turning him into an included in the digital communication world / Este estudo procurou investigar, dentro da literatura contemporânea disponível, a inclusão digital em geral, e especificamente as possibilidades de acesso dos brasileiros às novas tecnologias de comunicação a existência da possibilidade de acesso classifica o indivíduo como um incluído digital.
