The urban explosion of black majority churches : their origin, growth, distinctives and contribution to British Christianity / by Babatunde Aderemi Adedibu

Adedibu, Babatunde Aderemi January 2010 (has links)
British church history in the last sixty years is best described as a “coat of many colours”. This image is appropriate because of the growth and proliferation of Black Majority Churches in urban areas of the British Isles. The advent of these churches has contributed to the prevailing pluralistic theological landscape. This thesis aims to evaluate the current status of Black Majority Churches with respect to their origin, growth, distinctives and contributions to British Christianity. Historiographical research methods are utilised in this study, including a review of historical publications on Britain’s Black Majority Churches and evaluation of their liturgical practices, preaching styles, common ethos, training standards and generally accepted doctrinal statements. Hitherto, the general consensus amongst Black British theologians was that the Black Majority Churches originated in the Windrush migration era, beginning in 1948. However, this era is more appropriately seen as one of expansion, rather than the foundation, of Black Majority Churches. The foundation stone for the growth and proliferation of these churches had been laid with the establishment of Sumner Chapel, Peckham, in 1906 by a Ghanaian, Pastor Brem Wilson. Further impetus was given to this initiative with the emergence of the African Church Mission in 1931, led by a Nigerian, Rev Daniel Ekarte. The growth of these churches in urban areas was greatly accentuated during the Windrush dispensation, with the emergence of West Indian churches, which evolved not only as a result of racism but in order to meet the authentic social, cultural and religious needs of Africans and Caribbeans in Britain. The theological flavours of these churches are similar to those of global Pentecostalism, but are modulated by African and Caribbean cosmologies. Alongside their pneumacentric, experiential approach, there exists a strong resonance with the American Pentecostal “health and wealth” ideology. The socio-cultural and religious importance of these churches during the acculturation of migrants in Britain is pivotal, but at times these churches also limit the process of acculturation because of their minimal social interaction with the wider British communities. The political pragmatism of Black-led Churches is gradually evolving and is in sharp contrast to the political ideology of the Black Movement of America. The active involvement of various Black-led Church leaders, community groups and parachurch organizations is gradually shaping the political activities of Black Majority Churches. The missiological praxis of these churches seems suspect because many are “migrant sanctuaries”. The limitations are inherently due to a lack of retrospection on the missional tools of these churches and a certain disregard of the British context. The role and functionalities of these churches in terms of social and political relevance is gradually unfolding. The future relevance of these churches is totally dependent on proactive initiatives such as the planting of missional churches, development of articulate leadership, theological training and engagement with British culture. / PhD (Missiology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, in association with Greenwich School of Theology, UK, 2011

Begreppsbildning i ämnesövergripande och undersökande arbetssätt. : Studier av elevers arbete med miljöfrågor.

Österlind, Karolina January 2006 (has links)

This thesis examines how pupils in the upper level of compulsory school learn about environmental issues and related theoretical concepts in an instruction employing an investigative approach and thematically organised content. The results of the study give reason to question some central arguments supporting these designs of instruction. Additionally, and primarily, these results contribute to research on concept formation. An understanding of pupils’ difficulties in learning theoretical concepts as a problem of contextualization is derived, representing an alternative to the influential view in which pupils’ difficulties are seen as a problem of conceptual change.

Three case studies carried out within the pupils’ regular instruction are presented. The empirical material consists of recorded conversations, observational notes and the pupils’ own written material.

The first study shows that the pupils experience difficulty in distinguishing among the different meanings attached to individual concepts in various conceptual contexts. This implies that pupils are often unable to identify the meaning relevant to the specific environmental problem on which they are working. The second study shows that the pupils do not make the connection between theoretical concepts and practical activities, as intended in instruction. Instead, they interpret the concepts within separate practical contexts, i.e. interpretative contexts other than the theoretical contexts. Finally, the third study demonstrates that the context for a pupil’s investigation changes as the pupil’s values concerning the environmental issues are brought to the fore. Thus, the outcome indicates that contextualization is a main factor in pupils’ learning of theoretical concepts. It is shown that the pupils’ understanding of theoretical concepts is dependent on their contextualizations of these concepts, both with regard to different conceptual contexts and with regard to different levels within a context. It is also demonstrated that emotions play a part in pupils’ learning by determining into which context pupils choose to enter.

Van Wyk, Griffel January 2005 (has links)
Every local church, although part of a greater denomination, finds itself in a unique context with unique ministerial needs. It is of the utmost importance for every local church to be contextual in its ministry, to eventually being effective in its ministry. To make this possible a Scriptural view of the interplay between the unity of the church, the diversity of the church and the fulfilment of the calling of the church, currently not existing, is a key factor. The primary goal of this research is to provide guidelines to churches to assure the contextualization of their calling and ministerial strategy. This is done by motivating the necessity thereof, and by providing Scriptural principles for the interplay between the unity of the church, the diversity of the church and the fulfilment of the calling of the church. The research is done according to the practical-theological methodology of Gerben Heitink (1 999). • The first part of the study consists of a hermeneutical process giving perspective on the current state of affairs in ministerial theory and practice, as well as providing Scriptural principles. Chapter 2 of the hermeneutical investigation wants to determine in what manner the interplay between the unity of the church, the diversity of the church and the fulfilment of the calling of the church is currently being recognized when a local church determines their specific calling and ministerial strategy. Furthermore a brief overview is given regarding the state of affairs in South Africa which has an effect on the climate in which ministry has to take place. This ensures the contextualization of the study. In Chapter 3 Scriptural principles are developed regarding the interplay between the unity of the church, the diversity of the church and the fulfilment of the calling of the church. In Chapter 2 a description is made of the situation that has to change and in Chapter 3 the principles are developed by which the change has to take place. The research in Chapter 3 focuses on the periscope of Acts 21:17-26 and related periscopes. • The second part of the study comprises of an empirical investigation of Afrikaans speaking reformed church members in Eastern Pretoria to determine how they view the interplay between the unity of the church, the diversity of the church and the fulfilment of the calling of the church. • The third part comprises the strategic perspective that integrates the research results of Chapters 2, 3, and 4 to develop a theory of practice. This practical theory provides guidelines to local churches to help them determine their specific calling and ministerial strategy in the light of the interplay between the unity of the church, the diversity of the church and the fulfilment of the calling of the church. The result of this study shows that the interplay between the unity of the church, the diversity of the church and the fulfilment of the calling of the church is a key factor in determining the specific calling and ministerial strategy of a local church to ensure their obedience to Gods calling. Beacons were developed in the light of the Scriptural interplay and presented as guidelines for the local church. The beacons are in short: 1 - Identifying the unique context; 2 - Ascertaining of the current interplay; 3 - Ascertaining of the Scriptural interplay; 4 - Breaking through traditions; 5 - Create balance in the interplay; 6 - Ensure unity in communal interest; 7 – ensure diversity, not in own interest; 8 - Accommodating each other. / Thesis (M.Th. / Contextualization of chemical content has been highlighted in Chemistry teaching researches about didactic approach as a pedagogical foundation that allows the developing of citizenship, learning scientific concepts and that students recognizing Chemistry in their social context of daily life. In the last two decades, contextualization has been addressed in official educational documents and, consequently, in the scope of basic education, which we have been interested to investigate how High School students, of schools locate on São Paulo State, recognize chemical concepts in daily life and in society; analyze how they apply these concepts in order to explain physical phenomenon in a social context; and analyze how contextualization is presented in their classes. It was investigated students from K-10 and K-12 and also their Chemistry teachers. The research was conducted in three steps: application of the prototype, data collection, with a elaborated instrument, which was applied to K-10 and K-12 students from nine different schools located in the São Paulo metropolitan area; and also, interviews with teachers, in order to know their concepts and teaching practice. All students, from K-10 and K-12, answered the same questionnaire. The instruments approached questions related to chemical concepts in real situations, questions about daily life and conceptual questions as well. There was another instrument about recognizing concepts related to Chemistry, which was applied only to K-12 students. The data collected was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The qualitatively analysis included the item analysis and the statistical comparison among means of the two series. The qualitative analysis addressed the construction of knowledge levels and content analysis. The results showed the difference of knowledge among students from the same school. Generally, few differences were found among students from K-10 and K-12, and few differences among the schools surveyed. The results also indicated that there is a need for teachers to broaden their understanding about contextualization and reflection on their teaching methods.

Interdisciplinaridade, problematização e contextualização: a perspectiva de um grupo de professores em um curso de formação / Interdisciplinarity, problematization and contextualization: the perspective of a group of teachers in a training course

Ruas, Paloma Alinne Alves Rodrigues 13 March 2017 (has links)
The educational research has presented the contributions of the Scientific and Technological Literacy (STL) to students formation. However, there is a gap in teaching strategies that has not allowed the teacher to work with STL in the classroom. In this work, we present a methodological proposal that enables us to study STL objectives, and break with practices that value only information transference as well. This proposal is called Interdisciplinary Island of Rationality (IIR) where given a situation the student will use knowledge built in different disciplines to solve a problem. This design approach also allows Interdisciplinarity. In this perspective, Interdisciplinarity is not only seen as the integration of disciplines, but in a broad sense, as the mobilization of knowledge from the school curriculum, as well as from everyday life. Yet, literature has revealed the existence of conceptual and even methodological conflicts linked to the understanding of this term. For that reason, in adopting this perspective it becomes imperative to understand the concept of Interdisciplinarity at the heart of IIR. The development of IIR still makes it possible to approach curricular contents in a problematized and contextualizing way. In the same way, it is essential to understand the concepts of Problematization and Contextualization, because in the school environment it is possible to find misinterpretations about these terms. In relation to Problematization there are those who reduce it to a list of exercises; Contextualization is, in some cases, seen as the exemplification of everyday facts. This type of understanding becomes a significant obstacle when it is intended to work with IIR in the educational context. In this thesis, we discuss each of these terms in an epistemological perspective. In addition, we have carried out a continuing education action called Working with projects in the classroom: building an Interdisciplinary Island of Rationality to investigate the perception of a group of teachers regarding Interdisciplinarity, Problematization and Contextualization. At first, the analysis of two discussion forums: the first one dealing with Problematization and Contextualization, and the second with The concept of Interdisciplinarity. Subsequently, eight months after the end of the first course edition, a semistructured interview was conducted with four teachers, and with two teachers seven months after the conclusion of the second course edition. To verify the relationship between the discourse and the pedagogical teachers practice, in what concerns the concepts of Problem, Problematization, Contextualization, and Interdisciplinarity, the analysis of two activities was carried out, being the discussion forums: Sharing the results of the application of the IIR in the school, and The application of the IIR in the school context. The results show the difficulty of the teachers to work in a problematized, contextualized and interdisciplinary way in the classroom. On the other hand, it was verified that the course Working with projects in the classroom: building an Interdisciplinary Island of Rationality provided the participating teachers with a new pedagogical work, as well as with the construction of new knowledge, since the actions adopted by them to implement the IIR in the school context, approached the theoretical discussion addressed in the course.

Luca, Anelise Grünfeld de January 2018 (has links)
The present research aims at evincing the contextualized and interdisciplinary experimentation proposed in the book Dialogando Ciência entre sabores, odores e aromas: contextualizing the foods chemically and biologically (DC), in the context of the school. The questions investigated are: how primary and middle school students perceive and understand the proposal of contextualized and interdisciplinary experimentation and what impressions and implications are made possible in the classroom through contextualized and interdisciplinary experimentation by the chemistry and biology teachers? Firstly, a bibliographical survey of the subject matter was carried out, highlighting fundamental concepts for the understanding of the research object, as well as clarifications regarding interdisciplinary and contextualization. The subjects of the research were primary school (9th grade) and middle school students and chemistry and biology teachers. The data collection instruments from the students were: structured questionnaires, with closed and open questions, answered after the experiments, for contexts A, B and C A workshop for teachers in the areas of Biology and Chemistry was also held, in which a questionnaire containing 10 propositions and one open question was applied. Semistructured interviews with three teachers were also carried out. As results it was evidenced that the book DC presents materials of easy handling and acquisition; the proposed questions value previous ideas and the use of everyday school and scientific language; the readings of: Aprofunde seus conhecimentos ... instigate the research and appropriation of the concepts and the contextualized and interdisciplinary approach that promoted the understandings of the phenomenon in an integral way. The impressions and implications announced by the teachers were about: the simplicity of the experiments; planning as the central aspect of experimentation so that one can think of the teacher as mediator; interdisciplinary as a possibility of integration of knowledge in school contexts, provided by the dialogue, allowing both chemistry and biology teachers to dialogue with the same object of study and contextualization that allowed the problematization of real situations, loaded with meanings.

This paper aims to analyze geometrical knowledge which were appropriated by the students who participated in the studies of the place / environment on a project with environmental issues. The main objective is to investigate the mediating role of the teacher in planning activities contextualized knowledge about geometry in an urban watershed. In addition, they discussed about our role as teacher-building activities in the application of knowledge and reflections produced from studies of place / environment around the school. The activities developed in this paper are part of a broader study entitled: "Project Ribeirão Anhumas School", in which we took part of a subgroup in the State School Adalberto Birth, which included Mathematics (teacher of this research), Geography, Arts and Portuguese. For this feature multidisciplinary project, we tried to establish connections between the geometry content and activities through interdisciplinary geoscientific themes that allowed the articulation with the reality experienced by the student. Developed a concept of contextualization, which means that the production of knowledge is a result of the cultural space in which are located the subjects, which seeks to address the issues and problems of real life students situating the student's reasoning from a concept that is a more elementary that topic or problem considered mediating the learning and development of these students thought elementary structure to achieve another higher structure. The research is a qualitative, grounded methodologically as collaborative action research, particularly in relation to the planning of the problems of teaching and learning, the formulation and implementation of activities and the monitoring of students learning processes. This project, in turn, is composed with this methodology and specifically deals with the reflection of a teacher and contextualized learning geometry in a cultural-historical approach (based on the works of Vygotsky and Freitas, 2002). There is a more specific treatment of learning and extension of mathematical knowledge in light of horizontal and vertical mathematization (Luccas and Batista, 2011) and the horizontal and vertical dimensions dialectic (Compiani, 2007 and 2013). Describes the set of activities performed in three major moments of the research. However, for a more detailed interpretation, we use three activities the first time, three activities of the second phase and the third phase of the activities six issues worked on the 2nd field work, considered important in teaching geometry to show student's reasoning with regard to the dynamics of urban watershed. Concluded that the reflections of pedagogical practice contributions were acquired during teacher training in design when working with the place/environment in the construction of geometrical knowledge was essential to establish a school- life in order to enhance learning and develop spatial reasoning and rational student in the process of forming cognitive, social and emotional / Mestrado / Ensino e Historia de Ciencias da Terra / Mestra em Ensino e História de Ciências da Terra
