Estimativa da concentração de clorofila-a através de dados de cor do oceano e caracterização oceanográfica da plataforma continental adjacente à Baixada Santista / Estimative of chlorophyll-a concentration by ocean color data and oceanographic characterization of the continental shelf adjacent to Baixada Santista

Melissa Carvalho 16 March 2009 (has links)
A regional empirical algorithm for chlorophyll-a estimative in the continental shelf adjacent to Baixada Santista was developed based on in situ data on spectral radiometric and chlorophyll-a concentration obtained in 49 oceanographic stations during two oceanographic cruisers, in October 2005 and March 2006. Data from 32 stations were randomly selected for algorithm development and the other 17 for algorithm evaluation, representing all intervals of chlorophyll-a concentration in the two data subset. The performance of the regional algorithm was superior (r2 = 0,8424; RMS = 0,0418) to the global algorithms of the SeaWiFS, OC2v4 (r2=0,77; RMS=0,07), OC4v4 (r2=0,78;RMS=0,07) and MODIS, OC3 (r2=0,79; RMS=0,09) for the radiometric data, and also superior (r2=0,68; RMS = 0,028) to the global algorithm OC3 (r2= 0,62; RMS= 0,036) for reflectance data acquired by MODIS sensor. Also, the regional algorithm presented better performance, while estimative errors, related to the influence of other biooptical components of seawater. Based on the data of two other cruisers (September 2005 and March 2006), the oceanographic characterization of the continental shelf adjacent to Baixada Santista was made, revealing the region presents accentuate seasonal variability and can be characterized as oligotrophic in terms of nutrient availability and phytoplankton biomass.

Magnétostratigraphie et sédimentologie des formations crétacées des bassins sédimentaires d'Hamakoussou et du Mayo Oulo-Léré au Nord-Cameroun (Fossé de la Bénoué) / Magnetostratigraphy and sedimentology in the cretaceaous formations of the Hamakoussou and Mayo Oulo-Léré basins, Northern Cameroon (Benue Trough)

Ntsama Atangana, Jacqueline 20 December 2013 (has links)
Hamakoussou and Mayo Oulo-Léré sedimentary basins are extension of the executive branch of East-West Yola Benue Trough, whose formation is related to the opening of the South Atlantic from the dislocation of Gondwana, in the Cameroonian territory. An age range of lower Cretaceous to Barremian-Hauterivian limit has been assigned based on biochronological studies. The sedimentary sequence in both basins is composed upward finnings fluivial to fluviolacustrine deposits. The deposits present an alternation of fine grained sandstone, siltstone and mudstone overlying coarse sandstone which is underlain by micro-conglomerate to conglomerate facies at the base.A magnetostratigraphic study has been carried out on a fine sediments in the upper part of each sections. 50 samples from about 69.03 m thickness, were collected from 11 sites at Djallou and 78 samples, about 511.03 m thickness, were collected from 20 sites at Ourokessoum localities in the Hamakoussou basin ; and 116 samples, about 478.19 m thickness, collected from 45 sites at Tchontchi locality in the Mayo Oulo-Lere basin.Specimens subjected to progressive alternating field and thermal demagnetization show that the sedimentary sequences have a primary magnetization. The directions of magnetization indicate a regional tectonic marked by a rotation and translation block. Rock magnetic investigations reveal the presence of both high and low coercivity minerals. A sequence of three polarities was determined along each section of the Hamakoussou basin: one reversal polarity and two normal polarities, whereas two polarities: (normal and a reversal) were determined along Mayo section in the Mayo Oulo-Lere basin The three polarities sequences from the two sections from Hamakoussou basin are correlated with M1 and M3 Chrons and suggest an age between 125 and 128, 11 My. While the two polarities sequences from the Mayo Oulo-Lere basin are correlated with M1 Chron, and suggest an age between 125 and 127.61 My. The sedimentation rates of Hamakoussou basin deposits vary between 5.5 cm/kyr and 40.88 cm/kyr and 38.26 cm/kyr in the section of Mayo Oulo-Lere basin.

Perceptions of Duty and Motivations for Service of American Seagoing Officers During the American Revolution

Duerksen, Benjamin 2012 May 1900 (has links)
This study utilizes correspondence, memoirs, and secondary sources to explore the lives and careers of six Continental Navy captains?Esek Hopkins, Joshua Barney, John Paul Jones, Hector McNeill, Lambert Wickes, and John Barry?and reveal the motivational factors of patriotism, a desire for fame and professional advancement, and financial stability which underlay their decisions to seek commissions in the Continental Navy, and influenced their conduct while in the service. Additionally, it suggests that prewar interactions in an "Atlantic World" context influenced the ideological and personal motivations that formed the foundations for service in the Continental Navy. All three motivations played a role in each captain's career and affected their conduct in relation to their understandings of duty, but the degree to which they influenced the captains varied. Although the promise of a steady income helped motivate initial service, financial considerations played a larger role throughout Barney's and Barry's careers than they did for other captains. The desire for fame and personal prestige also affected the conduct and service of all six men, though Jones and Hopkins provide more concrete examples of its influence. Finally, experiences interacting with West Indies and Atlantic trade networks before the war likely influenced the captains' development of revolutionary principles, and their dedication to the United States. In addition to patriotism, Jones professed a devotion to universal principles of liberty and rights, and McNeill perceived the Revolution as an attempt to establish God's Kingdom of the Just. The degree to which each captain succeeded in achieving his goals, and the affect his Continental service had on employment after the Revolution, also varied significantly. Hopkins failed as the navy's commander-in-chief, but his performance did not negatively impact his social and political standing in his native Rhode Island. Unlike McNeill, Captains Barry, Barney and Jones also utilized their networks of friends and acquaintances well, helping them find prestigious and stable employment in other seagoing capacities after the war. Wickes died in 1777, but his brief service also suggests he would have achieved success had he survived.

Physical processes along the southern continental shelf and slope of Western Australia

Mohd Akhir, Mohd Fadzil January 2010 (has links)
The circulation along the south coast of Western Australia was examined using field data and numerical modelling. Physical processes in this region, particularly along the continental shelf and slope regions, were poorly understood due to a paucity of field measurements. Data were collected during a research cruise on RV Southern Surveyor (04/2006) during April 2006 consisting of 18 CTD transects from Twilight Cove (126oE) to Cape Leeuwin (115oE) and was augmented by shipborne ADCP data. The field data set provided a detailed understanding of three major current systems: Leeuwin Current (LC), Leeuwin Undercurrent (LU) and Flinders Current (FC). The LC along the south coast exhibits different characteristics when compared to that along the west coast. The LC flows into the colder and lower salinity subantarctic environment of the south coast. This is evident in a strong geopotential gradient off the south-west corner of Australia (Cape Leeuwin) resulting in rapid acceleration of the LC as it reaches a maximum velocity in this region. Numerical modelling studies, using the Regional Ocean Modelling System (ROMS) indicated that wind stress is an important component of the dynamics in this region. This was identified when comparing summer and winter conditions when the winds act in opposite directions, from north-westerly to southeasterly respectively. Along the shelf break and slope, the Flinders Current (FC) interacts with LC. As the dominant current, the FC serves both as a surface and as an undercurrent, transporting sub Antarctic mode water (SAMW). This interconnection the FC and LU can be seen clearly from the salinity, temperature and velocities within the depth range 200-700m postulating a connection between subsurface waters off Tasmania (origin of the Flinders Current) and the tropical Indian Ocean through the Flinders and Leeuwin Undercurrents.

Summer circulation and water masses along the West Australian coast

Woo, Lai Mun January 2005 (has links)
The Gascoyne continental shelf is located along the north-central coastline of Western Australia between latitudes 21° and 28°S. This study presents CTD and ADCP data together with concurrent wind and satellite imagery, to provide a description of the summer surface circulation pattern along the continental margin, and the hydrography present in the upper 1km of ocean, between latitudes 21° and 35°S. It also discusses the outcome of a numerical modelling study that examined the physical factors contributing to a bifurcation event persistently observed in satellite imagery at Point Cloates. The region comprises a complex system of four surface water types and current systems. The Leeuwin Current dominated the surface flow, transporting lower salinity, warmer water poleward along the shelf-break, and causing downwelling. Its signature ‘aged’ from a warm (24.7°C), lower salinity (34.6) water in the north to a cooler (21.9°C), more saline (35.2) water in the south, as a result of 2-4Sv geostrophic inflow of offshore waters. The structure and strength of the current altered with changing bottom topographies. The Ningaloo Current flowed along the northernmost inner coast of the Gascoyne shelf, carrying upwelled water and re-circulated Leeuwin Current water from the south. Bifurcation of the Ningaloo Current was seen south of the coastal promontory at Point Cloates. Numerical modelling demonstrated a combination of southerly winds and coastal and bottom topography off Point Cloates to be responsible for the recirculation, and indicated that the strength of southerly winds affect recirculation. Hypersaline Shark Bay outflow influenced shelf waters at the Bay’s mouth and to the south of the Bay. The Capes Current, a wind-driven current from south of the study region was identified as a cooler, more saline water mass flowing northward. Results of the hydrography study show five different water masses present in the upper-ocean. Their orientations were affected by the geopotential gradient driven Leeuwin Current/Undercurrent system at the continental margin. The Leeuwin Undercurrent was found at the shelf-slope, carrying (>252 μM/L) Subantarctic Mode Water at a depth of 400m

De aequitate in delimitatione maritima : l’équité dans la délimitation maritime : essai sur une théorisation de la jurisprudence internationale en matière de délimitation maritime équitable / De aequitate in delimitatione maritima : equity in maritime delimitation : essay on the theorisation of the international jurisprudence in the matter of equitable maritime delimitation

Heisten, Laurent 02 May 2016 (has links)
Since the first decision related to the delimitation of the continental shelf and the exclusive economic zone, the international jurisprudence is founded on the concept of equity. The international jurisprudence has progressively developed rules governing the equitable maritime delimitation, which can be classified in four categories of norms: the fundamental norm requiring the adoption of an equitable result, equitable principles, delimitation methods and relevant circumstances that contribute to adapt the provisional delimitation line on the concrete circumstances of the case. All those rules should contribute to the adoption of an equitable result. The rules mentioned above acceded progressively on normativity, which permits to distinguish four degrees of normativity in the evolution of the law applicable on equitable maritime delimitation. On degree zero of normativity, law was reduced on the fundamental norm and, thereafter, equitable principles and delimitation acceded on normativity. Their normativisation permits to distinguish between the first and the second degree of normativity. The superior degree of normativity is qualified by the normativity of all delimitation factors, even the relevant circumstances. The determination of these rules is based on the idea of equity. As the fundamental norm requires this equity, it should be called juridical equity. It is an autonomous tool, which completes the law applicable on maritime delimitation. Through the progressive development of the law, juridical equity (aequitas iuridicia) looses its influence and is replaced by equity that is a part of the norms (aequitas elementum iuris). This one guides the interpretation of the delimitation norms in order to obtain an equitable result. An abundant juridical practice has contributed to this evolution characterised by the rejection of juridical equity.

Mendonça, Luís Felipe Ferreira de January 2017 (has links)
The South Brazilian Continental Shelf (SBCS) is considered an important region of Brazilian coast, their water masses and the dynamic processes present a seasonal behavior that has strong effects on the coastal ecosystem. In order to characterize the Subtropical Shelf Front (STSF) and its impact on the atmosphere, this work used the ocean-atmosphere coupled model COAWST (Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment Transport) to study, in the SBCS region, the distribution of water massas and ocean variability during the year 2012. As well, the ocean-atmosphere coupling during 10 days of June 2012, coinciding with the ACEx/SIMTECO oceanographic cruise. The results of both study periods were compared with historical observations, data collected in situ by the ACEx/SIMTECO cruise and satellite data. The results indicate that this component was capable of reproducing the main thermohaline characteristics and the seasonality of dominant waters of the SBCS. The mixture between subtropical and subantarctic shelf waters that occurs in the STSF, showed a clear seasonal change in its volume. As consequence of mixing and seasonal STSF oscillation, the stability of the water column within the SBCS also changes seasonally. The values of sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface height showed seasonal RMSE values below 2 °C and an average skill greater than 0,75. Velocity values on the shef for Brazilian Coastal Current (BCC) reach 0,6 (ms-1), while transport to Brazil Current (BC) and BCC were -7 to -44 Sv and -0, 3 to 0.3 Sv, respectively. The seasonal maps of medium kinetic energy and turbulent kinetic energy represent the behavior of the BC and highlight the importance of the average coastal flow off the coast of Argentina during the year. The comparison of data from the atmospheric model, run in coupled mode of COAWST, with observational data indicates a satisfactory performance of the model in representing the variables potential temperature, relative and specific humidity, as well as the wind fields at the surface of the sea. The atmospheric module of COAWST was able to represent the variations of marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL), even in pré and post-frontal synoptic conditions such as those observed during the ACEx/SIMTECO cruise. The present work presents, for the first time in this region, results that demonstrate the robustness of the COAWST regional model in describing the synoptic behavior of the atmosphere in front of SST gradients in the SBCS region. And offers new subsidies for the study of the behavior of the ocean-atmosphere coupled system in this important region of the Brazilian coast.
