Continuation Power Flow And Voltage Stability In Power Systems

Keskin, Mehmet B. 01 September 2007 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis investigates an important power system phenomenon, voltage stability, by using continuation power flow method. Voltage collapse scenario is presented which can be a serious result of voltage instability and the parameters that affect voltage collapse are discussed. In analyzing power system voltage stability, continuation power flow method is utilized which consists of successive load flows. This method is applied to a sample test system and Turkish Power System and load-voltage curves for several buses are obtained.

Anti-Arab hate crimes in the aftermath of September 11, 2001: Assessing the influence of geographic and situational factors

Disha, Ilir 01 June 2005 (has links)
This study investigates how hate crimes in general and anti-Arab hate crimes in particular were distributed across different regions of the United States during the 2001-2002 period. The study explores how a historical event the terrorist attacks against the U.S. on September 11, 2001 and county population demographics affect the rates of hate crime against Arabs, Muslims or Middle Easterners. It was hypothesized that anti-Arab or anti-Muslim hate crimes displaced other forms of hate crime and were characterized by open acts of violence. According to the contact hypothesis, anti-Arab and anti-Muslim hate crimes would be more likely to occur in counties with relatively high levels of poverty and economic inequality. The research materials were obtained from publicly available data. The hate crime data were obtained from the national hate crime incidents reported to the FBI Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) program.

Automatic generation of global phase equilibrium diagram from equation of state

Patel, Keyurkumar S 01 June 2007 (has links)
A computational tool that uses an automated and reliable procedure for systematic generation of global phase equilibrium diagram (GPED) is developed for binary system using equation of state and its extension to the ternary system is discussed. The proposed algorithm can handle solid phase and also can predict all major six types of phase diagrams. The procedure enables automatic generation of GPED which incorporates calculations of all important landmarks such as critical endpoints, quadruple point (if any), critical line, liquid-liquid-vapor line (if any), solid-liquid-liquid line (if any) and solid-liquid-vapor line. The method is also capable of locating all azeotropic phenomena such as azeotropic endpoint, critical azeotrope, pure azeotropic point and azeotropic lines. Although, we demonstrated the methodology for cubic equation of state, the proposed strategy is completely general that doesn't require any knowledge about the type of phase diagram and can be applied to any pressure explicit equation of state model. Newton homotopy based global method has been applied for phase stability test and critical point calculations to ensure reliability. Having computed the binary phase diagrams, the methodology to generate global phase diagrams for ternary system is discussed that can locate all important thermodynamic landmarks such as tricritical point, quadruple critical endpoint, quadruple azeotropic endpoint, quintuple point and critical azeotropic endpoint. The procedure to trace ternary phenomena having two degree of freedom such as critical surface, solid-liquid-vapor surface and liquid-liquid-vapor surface has been discussed. Finally, applications of reliable global methods to solve the fluid-fluid phase equilibrium problem using SAFT equation for binary system and the solid-fluid phase equilibrium problem for binary and ternary systems have been demonstrated through representative computations.

Growing Together Separately: An Analysis of the Influence of Individualism in an Alternative Educational Setting

Warren, Jessica L. 01 January 2014 (has links)
Alternative educational settings that attempt to challenge Individualism are pervaded by Individualizing influences from the larger school system. This thesis examines the influences of Individualism in a school garden program at a Southern California continuation high school. Program members included high school students, college student interns, and two co-directors. Research was conducted during the spring semester of 2014. By providing an analysis of the Individualizing and non-Individualizing influences present in the program and the ways in which these influences interacted to inform the program structure and program members’ experiences and understandings, my thesis sheds new light on the complex ways alternative educational settings incorporate some aspects of Individualism, even as they challenge it.

A Part of the Whole

Choi, Namwon 10 May 2014 (has links)
My thesis exhibition, ‘A PART OF THE WHOLE,’ explores self-portraiture by assembling paintings of close-up images of my skin from underappreciated body parts. I paint the textures of my hands and feet as evidence of artistic labor striving for the continuation of artistic creativity. The thesis exhibition includes conventional paintings assembled paintings, installations, and items from the studio. The easels serve two purposes: presenting the paintings and functioning as metaphorical backbone supporting skin paintings. Lastly, a cast of my own face serves as a death mask that functions as an authentic seal of artistic authorship for my thesis exhibition.

This work presents a new geometrical parameterization scheme to the continuation power flow that allows the complete tracing of P-V curves and the computation of the maximum loading point of a power system, without ill-conditioning problems. The objective is to present in a clear and didactic way, the steps involved in the development of a geometrical parameterization technique from the observation of the behavior of power flow solutions path. The technique associates robustness with simplicity and easy interpretation. The Jacobian matrix singularity is overcome by the addition of a line equation which passes through a point in the plane determined by variables bus voltage magnitude and the loading factor, two physical parameter of easy understanding. The use of this technique enlarges the group of voltage variables that can be used as continuation parameter. The results obtained with the new methodology for the IEEE systems (14, 30, 57, 118 and 300 buses), show that the characteristics of the conventional method are improved and the region of convergence around the singular solution is enlarged. Many tests are also presented in intention to provide the complete understanding of the proposed method and to allow the comparison and assessment of the performance of the proposed parameterization scheme.

It is assumed the non-linearity is globally Lipschitz. We prove that the system is approximately controllable when the control acts on a bounded subset of the domain. The proof uses a variant of a classical fixed point method and is a simpler alternative to the earlier proof existing in the literature by means of the penalization of an optimal control problem. We also prove that the control may be built so that, in addition to the approximate controllability requirement, it ensures that the state reaches exactly a finite number of constraints.
