Etude et conception analogique d’architectures d’acquisition acoustique très faible consommation pour applications mobiles / Study and analog design of low-power acoustic acquisition systems for mobile applications

Les récentes avancées technologiques des microphones de type microsystème électromécanique (MEMS) leurs permettent une utilisation sur une large gamme d’amplitudes sonores. Leur niveau de bruit ayant baissé, il devient possible de capter des sons provenant d’une distance plus lointaine, tandis que l’augmentation de leur pression acoustique maximale leur permet de ne pas saturer dans un environnement très bruyant de type concert ou évènement sportif. Ainsi le système électronique de conversion analogique-numérique connecté au microphone devient l’élément limitant les performances du système d’acquisition acoustique. Un besoin de nouvelles architectures de conversion analogique-numérique ayant une plage dynamique augmentée se fait donc ressentir. Par ailleurs, ces microphones étant de plus en plus utilisés dans des systèmes fonctionnant sur batterie, la contrainte de limitation de la consommation devient importante.Dans la bande de fréquences audio, les convertisseurs analogiques-numériques de type sigma-delta sont les plus aptes à obtenir une grande résolution combinée à une faible consommation. Ils sont divisés en deux grandes familles: ceux à temps discret utilisant principalement des circuits à capacités commutées, et ceux à temps continu utilisant des circuits classiques. Cette thèse se concentre sur l’étude et la conception de chacun des deux types de convertisseurs sigma delta, en insistant sur la faible consommation, le faible coût de production (surface occupée) et la robustesse du circuit, cela en vue d’une production de masse pour équipements portables.La conception d’un convertisseur analogique numérique de type sigma-delta à temps discret a été réalisé, ce dernier atteignant un rapport signal sur bruit de 100 décibels sur une bande de 24kHz, pour une puissance consommée de seulement 480μW. Pour limiter la consommation, de nouveaux amplificateurs à base d’inverseurs sont utilisés, et dont la robustesse contre les variations du procédé de fabrication ou de la température a été améliorée. Les spécifications ont été définies grâce au développement d’un modèle de haut-niveau précis, ce qui permet d’éviter le surdimensionnement tout en atteignant les performances voulues. Enfin, un grand ratio de suréchantillonnage a été choisi afin de réduire l’espace utilisé par les capacités commutées, minimisant le coût de fabrication.Après une étude théorique de l’équivalence entre les modulateurs sigma-delta à temps discret et à temps continu, ainsi que des spécificités propres aux modulateurs à temps continu, une réalisation de ces derniers a été effectuée. Celui-ci atteint un rapport signal sur bruit de 95 décibels sur une bande de fréquence de 24kHz, tout en consommant 142μW. Pour réduire la consommation ainsi que l’espace utilisé, un filtre de boucle du second-ordre a été réalisé avec un seul amplificateur, et le quantificateur fait aussi office d’intégrateur grâce à l’utilisation d’une structure d’oscillateurs contrôlés en tension. Ce quantificateur à base d’oscillateurs est réalisé par des cellules numériques, réduisant la consommation et l’espace utilisé, mais est hautement non-linéaire. Cette non-linéarité a été prise en compte par des choix architecturaux afin de ne pas réduire les performances finales du modulateur. / The recent technological advances in microelectromechanical system (MEMS) microphones allow them to be used on a large sound amplitude range. Due to their lower noise level, it becomes possible to capture sound from a faraway distance, while their increased acoustic overload point gives them the ability to capture sound without saturation in a loud environment like a concert or a sport event. Thus, the electronic analog / digital conversion system connected to the microphone becomes the limiting element of the acoustic acquisition system performance. There is then a need for a new analog / digital conversion architecture which has an increased dynamic range. Furthermore, since more and more of these microphones are used in battery-powered devices, the power consumption limitation constraint becomes of high importance.In the audio frequency band, the sigma-delta analog / digital converters are the ones most able to provide a high dynamic range combined to a limited power consumption. They are split in two families: the discrete-time ones using switched-capacitors circuits and the continuous-time ones using more classical structures. This thesis concentrates on the study and the design of both of these two types of sigma-delta converters, with an emphasis on the low-power consumption, the low production cost (area occupied) and the circuit robustness, in sight of a mass production for portable devices.A discrete-time sigma-delta modulator design has been made, the latter reaching a signal to noise ratio of 100dB on a 24kHz frequency bandwidth, for a power consumption of only 480μW. To limit the power consumption, new inverter-based amplifiers are used, with an improved robustness against the variations of the fabrication process or the temperature. Amplifier specifications are obtained thanks to an accurate high-level model developed, which allows to avoid over-design while ensuring that the wanted performances are reached. Finally, a large oversampling ratio has been used to reduce the switched-capacitors area, lowering the modulator cost.After a theoretical study of the equivalence between discrete-time and continuous-time modulators, and of continuous-time modulators specificities, a design of the latter has been made too. It reaches a signal to noise ratio of 95dB on a 24kHz bandwidth, while consuming 142μW. To reduce the power consumption and the occupied area, a second-order loop filter is implemented using a single amplifier, and the quantizer uses a VCO-based structure that provides inherently an integrating stage. The VCO-based quantizer is made using digital cells, lowering the consumption and area, but is highly non-linear. This non-linearity has been handled by architectural choices to not influence the final modulator performances.

Les travaux de cette thèse portent sur le choix du paramètre de lissage dans le problème de l'estimation non paramétrique de la fonction de densité associée à des processus stationnaires ergodiques à temps continus. La précision de cette estimation dépend du choix de ce paramètre. La motivation essentielle est de construire une procédure de sélection automatique de la fenêtre et d'établir des propriétés asymptotiques de cette dernière en considérant un cadre de dépendance des données assez général qui puisse être facilement utilisé en pratique. Cette contribution se compose de trois parties. La première partie est consacrée à l'état de l'art relatif à la problématique qui situe bien notre contribution dans la littérature. Dans la deuxième partie, nous construisons une méthode de sélection automatique du paramètre de lissage liée à l'estimation de la densité par la méthode du noyau. Ce choix issu de la méthode de la validation croisée est asymptotiquement optimal. Dans la troisième partie, nous établissons des propriétés asymptotiques, de la fenêtre issue de la méthode de la validation croisée, données par des résultats de convergence presque sûre. / The work this thesis focuses on the choice of the smoothing parameter in the context of non-parametric estimation of the density function for stationary ergodic continuous time processes. The accuracy of the estimation depends greatly on the choice of this parameter. The main goal of this work is to build an automatic window selection procedure and establish asymptotic properties while considering a general dependency framework that can be easily used in practice. The manuscript is divided into three parts. The first part reviews the literature on the subject, set the state of the art and discusses our contribution in within. In the second part, we design an automatical method for selecting the smoothing parameter when the density is estimated by the Kernel method. This choice stemming from the cross-validation method is asymptotically optimal. In the third part, we establish an asymptotic properties pertaining to consistency with rate for the resulting estimate of the window-width.

The first part analyzes an Endogenous Business Cycle model with embodied technological change. Households take an optimal decision about their spending for consumption and financing of R&D. The probability of a technology invention occurring is an increasing function of aggregate R&D expenditure in the whole economy. New technologies bring higher productivity, but rather than applying to the whole capital stock, they require a new vintage of capital, which first has to be accumulated before the productivity gain can be realized. The model offers some valuable features: Firstly, the response of output following a technology shock is very gradual; there are no jumps. Secondly, R&D is an ongoing activity; there are no distinct phases of research and production. Thirdly, R&D expenditure is pro-cyclical and the real interest rate is counter-cyclical. Finally, long-run growth is without scale effects. The second part analyzes a RBC model in continuous time featuring deterministic incremental development of technology and stochastic fundamental inventions arriving according to a Poisson process. In a special case an analytical solution is presented. In the general case a delay differential equation (DDE) has to be solved. Standard numerical solution methods fail, because the steady state is path dependent. A new solution method is presented which is based on a modified method of steps for DDEs. It provides not only approximations but also upper and lower bounds for optimal consumption path and steady state. Furthermore, analytical expressions for the long-term equilibrium distributions of the stationary variables of the model are presented. The distributions can be described as extended Beta distributions. This is deduced from a methodical result about a delay extension of the Pearson system.

High performance continuous-time filters for information transfer systems

Vast attention has been paid to active continuous-time filters over the years. Thus as the cheap, readily available integrated circuit OpAmps replaced their discrete circuit versions, it became feasible to consider active-RC filter circuits using large numbers of OpAmps. Similarly the development of integrated operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) led to new filter configurations. This gave rise to OTA-C filters, using only active devices and capacitors, making it more suitable for integration. The demands on filter circuits have become ever more stringent as the world of electronics and communications has advanced. In addition, the continuing increase in the operating frequencies of modern circuits and systems increases the need for active filters that can perform at these higher frequencies; an area where the LC active filter emerges. What mainly limits the performance of an analog circuit are the non-idealities of the used building blocks and the circuit architecture. This research concentrates on the design issues of high frequency continuous-time integrated filters. Several novel circuit building blocks are introduced. A novel pseudo-differential fully balanced fully symmetric CMOS OTA architecture with inherent common-mode detection is proposed. Through judicious arrangement, the common-mode feedback circuit can be economically implemented. On the level of system architectures, a novel filter low-voltage 4th order RF bandpass filter structure based on emulation of two magnetically coupled resonators is presented. A unique feature of the proposed architecture is using electric coupling to emulate the effect of the coupled-inductors, thus providing bandwidth tuning with small passband ripple. As part of a direct conversion dual-mode 802.11b/Bluetooth receiver, a BiCMOS 5th order low-pass channel selection filter is designed. The filter operated from a single 2.5V supply and achieves a 76dB of out-of-band SFDR. A digital automatic tuning system is also implemented to account for process and temperature variations. As part of a Bluetooth transmitter, a low-power quadrature direct digital frequency synthesizer (DDFS) is presented. Piecewise linear approximation is used to avoid using a ROM look-up table to store the sine values in a conventional DDFS. Significant saving in power consumption, due to the elimination of the ROM, renders the design more suitable for portable wireless communication applications.

Coding Theorem and Memory Conditions for Abstract Channels with Time Structure / Kodierungstheorem und Gedächtniseigenschaften für abstrakte Kanäle mit Zeitstruktur

In the first part of this thesis, we generalize a coding theorem and a converse of Kadota and Wyner (1972) to abstract channels with time structure. As a main contribution we prove the coding theorem for a significantly weaker condition on the channel output memory, called total ergodicity for block-i.i.d. inputs. We achieve this result mainly by introducing an alternative characterization of information rate capacity. We show that the ψ-mixing condition (asymptotic output-memorylessness), used by Kadota and Wyner, is quite restrictive, in particular for the important class of Gaussian channels. In fact, we prove that for Gaussian channels the ψ-mixing condition is equivalent to finite output memory. Moreover, we derive a weak converse for all stationary channels with time structure. Intersymbol interference as well as input constraints are taken into account in a flexible way. Due to the direct use of outer measures and a derivation of an adequate version of Feinstein’s lemma we are able to avoid the standard extension of the channel input σ-algebra and obtain a more transparent derivation. We aim at a presentation from an operational perspective and consider an abstract framework, which enables us to treat discrete- and continuous-time channels in a unified way. In the second part, we systematically analyze infinite output memory conditions for abstract channels with time structure. We exploit the connections to the rich field of strongly mixing random processes to derive a hierarchy for the nonequivalent infinite channel output memory conditions in terms of a sequence of implications. The ergodic-theoretic memory condition used in the proof of the coding theorem and the ψ-mixing condition employed by Kadota and Wyner (1972) are shown to be part of this taxonomy. In addition, we specify conditions for the channel under which memory properties of a random process are invariant when the process is passed through the channel. In the last part, we investigate cascade and integration channels with regard to mixing conditions as well as properties required in the context of the coding theorem. The results are useful to study many physically relevant channel models and allow a component-based analysis of the overall channel. We consider a number of examples including composed models and deterministic as well as random filter channels. Finally, an application of strong mixing conditions from statistical signal processing involving the Fourier transform of stationary random sequences is discussed and a list of further applications is given. / Im ersten Teil der Arbeit wird ein Kodierungstheorem und ein dazugehöriges Umkehrtheorem von Kadota und Wyner (1972) für abstrakte Kanäle mit Zeitstruktur verallgemeinert. Als wesentlichster Beitrag wird das Kodierungstheorem für eine signifikant schwächere Bedingung an das Kanalausgangsgedächtnis bewiesen, die sogenannte totale Ergodizität für block-i.i.d. Eingaben. Dieses Ergebnis wird hauptsächlich durch eine alternative Charakterisierung der Informationsratenkapazität erreicht. Es wird gezeigt, dass die von Kadota und Wyner verwendete ψ-Mischungsbedingung (asymptotische Gedächtnislosigkeit am Kanalausgang) recht einschränkend ist, insbesondere für die wichtige Klasse der Gaußkanäle. In der Tat, für Gaußkanäle wird bewiesen, dass die ψ-Mischungsbedingung äquivalent zu endlichem Gedächtnis am Kanalausgang ist. Darüber hinaus wird eine schwache Umkehrung für alle stationären Kanäle mit Zeitstruktur bewiesen. Sowohl Intersymbolinterferenz als auch Eingabebeschränkungen werden in allgemeiner und flexibler Form berücksichtigt. Aufgrund der direkten Verwendung von äußeren Maßen und der Herleitung einer angepassten Version von Feinsteins Lemma ist es möglich, auf die Standarderweiterung der σ-Algebra am Kanaleingang zu verzichten, wodurch die Darstellungen transparenter und einfacher werden. Angestrebt wird eine operationelle Perspektive. Die Verwendung eines abstrakten Modells erlaubt dabei die einheitliche Betrachtung von zeitdiskreten und zeitstetigen Kanälen. Für abstrakte Kanäle mit Zeitstruktur werden im zweiten Teil der Arbeit Bedingungen für ein unendliches Gedächtnis am Kanalausgang systematisch analysiert. Unter Ausnutzung der Zusammenhänge zu dem umfassenden Gebiet der stark mischenden zufälligen Prozesse wird eine Hierarchie in Form einer Folge von Implikationen zwischen den verschiedenen Gedächtnisvarianten hergeleitet. Die im Beweis des Kodierungstheorems verwendete ergodentheoretische Gedächtniseigenschaft und die ψ-Mischungsbedingung von Kadota und Wyner (1972) sind dabei Bestandteil der hergeleiteten Systematik. Weiterhin werden Bedingungen für den Kanal spezifiziert, unter denen Eigenschaften von zufälligen Prozessen am Kanaleingang bei einer Transformation durch den Kanal erhalten bleiben. Im letzten Teil der Arbeit werden sowohl Integrationskanäle als auch Hintereinanderschaltungen von Kanälen in Bezug auf Mischungsbedingungen sowie weitere für das Kodierungstheorem relevante Kanaleigenschaften analysiert. Die erzielten Ergebnisse sind nützlich bei der Untersuchung vieler physikalisch relevanter Kanalmodelle und erlauben eine komponentenbasierte Betrachtung zusammengesetzter Kanäle. Es wird eine Reihe von Beispielen untersucht, einschließlich deterministischer Kanäle, zufälliger Filter und daraus zusammengesetzter Modelle. Abschließend werden Anwendungen aus weiteren Gebieten, beispielsweise der statistischen Signalverarbeitung, diskutiert. Insbesondere die Fourier-Transformation stationärer zufälliger Prozesse wird im Zusammenhang mit starken Mischungsbedingungen betrachtet.

Os projetos dos controladores são realizados com base no modelo fuzzy T-S que representa exatamente o sistema não linear e os procedimentos de projeto fornecem uma região na qual as condições iniciais devam estar, tal que, o sistema não linear seja exatamente descrito pelo modelo fuzzy T-S incerto durante toda a trajetória de estado do sistema e ainda que esta trajetória permaneça dentro de uma região de operação previamente especificada. Em geral, o controle chaveado não possui restrição na frequência de chaveamento dos ganhos, o que pode levar ao chattering, que se manifesta pelo chaveamento em frequência infinitamente rápida dos ganhos de realimentação. Visando a eliminação do chattering no controle chaveado, propõe-se uma nova técnica de suavização do controle chaveado, o controle chaveado suave. Esta nova lei de controle pode ser utilizada nas mesmas condições do controle chaveado e é baseada no conceito do mínimo suave, definido neste trabalho. Além disso, são propostos procedimentos de projeto que consideram distúrbios para ambas as leis de controle chaveada e chaveada suave. Ademais, neste trabalho também se apresenta uma implementação da lei de controle chaveada em um sistema Ball Balancer fabricado pela Quanser. / The switched control can be efficiently used for controlling uncertain Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems, which have uncertain membership functions and known local models. Because these fuzzy systems can exactly represent a class of uncertain nonlinear systems in a given operation region in the state space, it is interesting to use them to describe nonlinear systems, performing the controller design based on a T-S fuzzy model that exactly describes the nonlinear system. However, the perfect representation of the uncertain nonlinear system by the T-S fuzzy model as a convex combination is only valid in the operation region. Therefore, it is necessary to assure conditions such that the state of the system remains in that region. This work proposes conditions to ensure the local stabilization, with decay rate, of a class of uncertain continuoustime nonlinear systems with saturation on the actuator, using a switched control. The designs of the controllers are performed based on the T-S fuzzy model which exactly describes the nonlinear system and the design procedures provide a region in which the initial conditions must be such that the nonlinear system is exactly described by the uncertain T-S fuzzy model along the whole state trajectory of the system and this trajectory remains in a specified operation region. Usually, the switched control has no bound on the frequency of the feedback gains switching, and this can lead to chattering, which is manifested by infinitely fast frequency of the feedback gains switching. In order to avoid the chattering in the switched control, this work proposes a new technique to smooth the switched control, the smooth switched control. This new control law can be used under the same conditions as the switched control and it is based on the concept of smooth minimum, which is defined in this work. In addition, design procedures considering disturbances for both switched and smooth switched control laws are proposed. Furthermore, in this work it is also presented an implementation of the proposed switched control law in a Ball Balancer system manufactured by Quanser.

Cette thèse traite du problème d'observation et d'estimation des variables caractéristiques des systèmes dynamiques. Il s’agit d’une problématique fondamentale qui est au cœur de nombreux domaines relavant des sciences de l'ingénieur. Les travaux sont conduits dans un contexte ensembliste. Les techniques développées pour l’estimation de l’état et des variables d’entrées ont pour objectif final le contrôle de cohérence des systèmes non linéaires à temps continu. Une première approche conjugue les relations de parité et les différentiateurs à modes glissants pour l’estimation des entrées d’un système non linéaire. Les domaines des entrées compatibles avec les mesures sont alors reconstruits grâce à l’analyse par intervalles et aux techniques de satisfaction de contraintes. Il est montré que la relaxation des contraintes de stabilité/coopérativité pour la construction d’un observateur intervalle peut se faire grâce à des changements de base déterminés de différentes manières et pouvant être variants ou invariants dans le temps. Des simulations numériques illustrent les techniques proposées. Une application à un système aéronautique est également présentée à l’aide d’un jeu de données réelles. / This thesis deals with the problem of a dynamical system observation and the estimation of its characteristic variables; the latter point constitutes the core element in many engineering science fields. The final aim is to build a general framework for integrity control and fault detection of such systems within a bounded error context. The developments offered herein make use of parity relations, sliding mode differentiators, interval observers and constraint satisfaction problems. Input reconstruction techniques are developed for a general class of nonlinear continuous-time systems. Domains are reconstructed for the input values which are consistent with the measurements using interval analysis and constraint satisfaction techniques. It is shown that time-varying or invariant coordinate changes may relax the applicability conditions (stability/cooperativity) of the interval observer design methods. Sliding mode differentiators were also used to enhance interval observer accuracy. The proposed approaches are illustrated through computer simulations and they have been applied to aircraft servo loop control surface for robust and early detection of abnormal positions.

Identification par modèle non entier pour la poursuite robuste de trajectoire par platitude

Les études menées permettent de prendre en main un système depuis l’identification jusqu’à la commande robuste des systèmes non entiers. Les principes de la platitude permettent de parvenir à la planification de trajectoire à condition de connaître le modèle du système, d’où l’intérêt de l’identification des paramètres du système. Les principaux travaux de cette thèse concernent l’identification de système par modèles non entiers, la génération et la poursuite robuste de trajectoire par l’application des principes de la platitude aux systèmes non entiers.Le chapitre 1 rappelle les définitions et propriétés de l’opérateur non entier ainsi que les diverses méthodes de représentation d’un système non entier. Le théorème de stabilité est également remémoré. Les algèbres sur les polynômes non entiers et sur les matrices polynômiales non entières sont introduites pour l’extension de la platitude aux systèmes non entiers.Le chapitre 2 porte sur l’identification par modèle non entier. Après un état de l’art sur les méthodes d’identification par modèle non entier, deux contextes sont étudiés : en présence de bruit blanc et en présence de bruit coloré. Dans chaque cas, deux estimateurs optimaux (sur la variance et le biais) sont propos´es : l’un, en supposant une structure du modèle connue et d’ordres de dérivation fixés, et l’autre en combinant des techniques de programmation non linéaire qui optimise à la fois les coefficients et les ordres de dérivation.Le chapitre 3 établit l’extension des principes de la platitude aux systèmes non entiers.La platitude des systèmes non entiers linéaires en proposant différentes approches telles que les fonctions de transfert et la pseudo-représentation d’état par matrices polynômiales est étudiée.La robustesse du suivi de trajectoire est abordée par la commande CRONE. Des exemples de simulations illustrent les développements théoriques de la platitude au travers de la diffusion thermique sur un barreau métallique.Enfin, le chapitre 4 est consacré à la validation des contributions en identification, en planification de trajectoire et en poursuite robuste sur un système non entier réel : un barreau métallique est soumis à un flux de chaleur. / The general theme of the work enables to handle a system, from identification to robust control. Flatness principles tackle path planning unless knowing the system model, hence the system parameter identification necessity. The principal contribution of this thesis deal with system identification by non integer models and with robust path tracking by the use of flatness principles for fractional models.Chapter 1 recalls the definitions and properties of a fractional operator and also the various representation methods of a fractional system. The stability theorem is also brought to mind. Fractional polynomial and fractional polynomial matrice algebras are introduced for the extension of flatness principles for fractional systems.Chapter 2 is about non integer model identification. After a state of the art on system identification by non integer model. Two contexts are considered : in presence of white noise and of colored noise. In each situation, two optimal (in variance and bias sense) estimators are put forward : one, when considering a known model structure with fixed differentiating orders, and another one by combining nonlinear programming technics for the optimization of coefficients and differentiating orders.Chapter 3 establishes the extension of flatness principles to fractional systems. Flatness of linear fractional systems are studied while considering different approaches such as transfer functions or pseudo-state-space representations with polynomial matrices. Path tracking robustness is ensured with CRONE control. Simulation examples display theoretical developments on flatness through thermal diffusion on a metallic rod. Finally, Chapter 4 is devoted to validate the contributions to system identification, to trajectory planning and to robust path tracking on a real fractional system : a metallic rod submitted to a heat flux.

Etude et développement d'un amplificateur audio de classe D intégré haute performance et basse consommation. / Study and design of a digital audio class D amplifier

De nombreux dispositifs embarqués récents comme les téléphones portables, les GPS ou encore les consoles de jeu, possèdent un ou des haut-parleurs, chacun étant piloté par un amplificateur audio sur circuit intégré. De tels amplificateurs audio doivent répondre le mieux possible à quatre contraintes : une qualité audio satisfaisante, une immunité aux perturbations induites par le système, une faible consommation et une surface de silicium minimale. Ce travail de thèse sous contrat CIFRE a pour origine la création de l’entreprise Primachip en mai 2009 par Christian Dufaza et Hassan Ihs. Cette startup a été bâtie sur une architecture innovante d’amplificateur audio de classe D intégré. Son originalité repose sur le principe de rétroaction partielle qui s’applique à une boucle contenant un modulateur numérique Delta Sigma (ΔΣ) qui pilote l’étage de puissance et un convertisseur analogique-numérique (ADC) effectuant la rétroaction. Cela permet d’obtenir la stabilité de cette boucle tout en offrant une excellente réjection des bruits de l’étage de puissance. Un prototype sur silicium de l’architecture d’amplificateur de classe D numérique a été conçu et fabriqué. Un nouvel ADC ΔΣ temps continu a été développé pour ce prototype, afin d’obtenir des performances supérieures ou égales à l’état de l’art. Les résultats obtenus sur le circuit se sont révélés encourageants, bien que toutes les spécifications n’aient pas été atteintes. L’analyse des erreurs de ce premier circuit doit permettre la réalisation d’un amplificateur intégré exploitant au mieux cette architecture de classe D numérique. / Most current embedded devices, such as smartphones, GPS or portable consoles, feature one speaker or more, those speakers being driven by an integrated audio amplifier. This type of amplifier must meet four specifications: an adequate audio quality, to be immune to system disturbances, low power consumption and the smallest silicon area. This work takes its origin from the creation of Primachip in May 2009 by Christian Dufaza and Hassan Ihs. The aim of this startup was to develop and sell an innovative audio class-D amplifier for mobile market: the digital class-D concept. A partnership with the IM2NP laboratory was decided to propose a PhD topic under CIFRE contract (PhD in an industrial environment), in order to study and improve the amplifier architecture. Its originality is in the partial feedback concept which applies to a loop made of a digital ΔΣ modulator driving the power stage, with an analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) in the feedback path. It makes it possible to achieve stability while offering an outstanding power supply rejection. An integrated prototype of the class-D amplifier was designed, fabricated and evaluated. A new continuous-time ΔΣ ADC has been added to enable the digital class-D loop to achieve performances superior or equal to state of the art. The circuit measurement results were encouraging, although not ideal. The analysis of the prototype errors was performed. The conclusions should allow the design of an integrated audio amplifier making the best of the digital class-D architecture.
