Realizing the Human Unity with the Universe by way of Letting Go and Emptying: Martin Heidegger and the Zhuangzi at the Crossroads of Being and DaoBraniger, Chesna Jane 01 December 2016 (has links)
The scholarship that surrounds the relation or comparability of Martin Heidegger’s and Asian thought asks questions of comparability and influence, but the body of literature that has been produced over the last several decades has failed to fully engage Heideggerian and any particular Asian tradition with comparable depth. This work sets out to investigate the ways in which Heidegger’s work and the text of the Zhuangzi, in terms of their responses to the problems that emerge in their respective traditions, offer comparable notions of human nature, authenticity, and the human place in and relation to the universe. Both thinkers find that technology and utility, which are intimately connected with how humans appropriate the world, obstructs how humans are able to relate to the world. Though it becomes apparent in the investigation that Heidegger and the authors of the Zhuangzi offer opposing ideas of the underlying cause of this misappropriation and obstruction, this work uncovers that both traditions offer a vision of how to navigate the world such that we transform with and respond to the world of which we are an inseparable part.

The Ruist way of heaven and the Jesuit way to heaven :cosmogonic meditations by Fr. Angelo A. Zottoli SJ (Chao De Li 晁德蒞, 1826-1902)De Caro, Antonio 22 August 2019 (has links)
Fr. Angelo Andrea Zottoli S. J. (Chao De Li晁德蒞 , 1826-1902), was an Italian Jesuit missionary who arrived in Zi-ka-wei (Xujiahui 徐家匯, Shanghai), on September 1848. He played a major role in the community of Zi-ka-wei as an educator and an erudite sinologist. This project aims to highlight his writings on creation ex nihilo (out of nothing) by God and his perspective on cosmogony since it had been a crucial and constant topic of his theological and philosophical writings. In fact, just one year after his arrival, in 1849 Zottoli started to work on theological texts on Roman Catholic cosmogony adopting, however, a very usual and common theological approach in accordance with the education of the Jesuits of his community. Subsequently, in 1879, he published his Cursus, a course in five volumes on Chinese literature for European missionaries, discussing also Confucian and neo-Confucian cosmogony. However, already in 1869, in his Qu pi xun meng 《取譬訓蒙》, he expressed his vision on Roman Catholic cosmogony adopting terms from Confucian cosmogony, like hua cheng 化成 to express the idea of creation ex nihilo. As a result, this project aims to reveal the creative approach of Zottoli on cosmogony and, at the same time, his role as a transmitter of the Jesuit spirituality in the late Qing dynasty China. It aims also to unfold the personal journey of Zottoli who had been deeply influenced by Chinese philosophy in his writings on cosmogony and creation.

Philosophical themes in works of Stanislaw LemMorton, Luise H. January 1985 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to examine two works of science fiction by the Polish writer and satirist, Stanislaw Lem, which exemplify two broad philosophical themes central to his writings; viz., cosmology and personhood. In "The New Cosmogony," Lem focuses on the central problem of the philosophy of scientific cosmology, namely, what kind of explanation is-applicable to that science. Lem synthesizes religious and scientific views of the creation of the universe in his model of the cosmos as a Game of Civilizations with advanced technologies. Central to this work is the philosophical notion of intentionality. In "The Mask," Lem raises questions about personhood, consciousness, freedom, determinism, and responsibility by embedding them in the autobiographical narrative of a conscious, female machine. Lem's views on cosmology and his views on personhood both involve intentionality - the intentions of civilizations, on the one hand, and the intentions of a King and of the machine he created, on the other. Both works challenge all preconceptions about philosophy through the use of paradox, irony, and sometimes ridicule. Lem provides no answers, however. He is interested in setting up futuristic technological situations that are capable of undermining our basic assumptions about the world.

Previous issue date: 2017-06-30 / Ovídio (43 a. C. - 17 d. / Ovid (43 BC – AD 17), poet of the Classic period of Ancient Rome, more precisely from the time of Augustus, wrote around 8 AD a work entitled Metamorphoses (Metamorphoseon libri), a long poem divided in fifteen Books. In general, several myths are narrated, focusing on the transformations of beings and things. This research has as corpus part of Book I, more specifically the hexameters of number 1 to 451, in which Ovid tells mythological histories regarding the origin of the world. That is, the central theme of the chosen verses is the Cosmogony, a set of etiological myths that tells the principle of the universe and the transformations that the world underwent to arrive at the present form. This work, inspired by greimasian Semiotics, sought to understand the process of construction of meaning in the text, with a look at the figures that make up the Cosmogony’s theme, in the discursive level. For this understanding, the figurative and iconic features, perceived in the verses of Ovid, were investigated more emphatically. Thus, in the poem, the figures that cover a certain theme and the chain of them, in the search for meaning, were observed. In this way, the sign, its expression and the effects of sense that contribute to the formation of the poetic in the Ovidian text were analyzed. Moreover, in view of the reading of the work of an ancient Roman in original Latin, a "translation of service", accompanied by notes of mythical-cultural reference, was also proposed as a subsidy to literary analysis. This translation basically sought to describe the Latin grammatical system to understand it on a linguistic level. The reference notes, however, turned to the relation between the text and Culture, seeking to explain it. As a study of poetry, some hexameters were analyzed in search of metric data that favor the construction of the poetic sense. In short, the research highlighted the way in which the literary text was constructed by Ovid, the author of Metamorphoses, who, with high aesthetic level, sang the Cosmogony.

Reconstituting a World: Constructing a CubePeterson, Erik Fred 31 July 2013 (has links)
The following is an exploration into the composition and construction of a marine research laboratory situated on a remote sea cliff off the coast of Norway. The settlement is composed as a model of the world. Located at the chaotic boundary of earth, sea and sky, the <br />construction acts against these forces as threshold and counterpoint. It is the reconstitution of a world, a settlement, a center in a perceived infinity. / Master of Architecture
