The Performance of Memorialization: Politics of Memory and Memory-Making at the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys

My study examines how religion operates as a form of social control in the politics of memory and memory making in the case of the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys (1900-2011), a state reform school in Marianna, Florida. Collective memory making is a dynamic process that reflects the social, economic, and political tensions of the present. It is a process most evident during circumstances of reconciliation following conflict, violence, or cases of turmoil resulting in death and in conflicting memories of the experience. Emergence of a dominant narrative about the tragedy or traumatizing event and subjugation of conflicting stories and memories often follows. At this intersection, memory becomes a weapon or reflection of power. Religion has been defined as operating as means of social control, particularly in the face of uncertainty, fear, and conflict. This study explores dynamics of power with respect to memorialization and ways in which religion informs the present and the past through processes of collective memory making. I also explore ways in which Christianity is employed as a means of bringing about reconciliation through public memory making and memorialization efforts as in the case of the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys located in Marianna, Florida. In 2013, a team of anthropologists from the University of South Florida (USF) received approval from the State of Florida to investigate the location of missing children buried at Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys. This research, known as the Boot Hill Burial Ground Project, resulted in the excavation of 55 burials. The Boot Hill Burial Ground Project is integral to the memorialization efforts and processes at Dozier as multiple stakeholders utilize the findings of the project for the construction of collective and public memories. The purpose of this study is to analyze tensions involved in processes of memory making resulting from the discovery, excavation, and identification of bodies at the Boot Hill Burial Ground on the Dozier campus and ways power is expressed within this process.

Data mining flow graphs in a dynamic compiler

This thesis introduces FlowGSP, a general-purpose sequence mining algorithm for flow graphs. FlowGSP ranks sequences according to the frequency with which they occur and according to their relative cost. This thesis also presents two parallel implementations of FlowGSP. The first implementation uses JavaTM threads and is designed for use on workstations equipped with multi-core CPUs. The second implementation is distributed in nature and intended for use on clusters. The thesis also presents results from an application of FlowGSP to mine program profiles in the context of the development of a dynamic optimizing compiler. Interpreting patterns within raw profiling data is extremely difficult and heavily reliant on human intuition. FlowGSP has been tested on performance-counter profiles collected from the IBM WebSphere Application Server. This investigation identifies a number of sequences which are known to be typical of WebSphere Application Server behavior, as well as some sequences which were previously unknown.

Capitalist Transformation and the Evolution of Civil Society in a South Indian Fishery

This thesis employs Karl Polanyi’s concept of the double-movement of capitalism to trace the trajectory of a social movement that arose in response to capitalist transformation in the fishery of Kanyakumari district, south India. Beginning in the 1980s, this counter-movement militantly asserted community control over marine resources, arguing that intensified production for new markets should be subordinated to the social imperatives of subsistence and equity. Two decades later, the ambition of “embedding” the market within the community had yielded instead to an adaptation to the market in the language of “professionalization,” self-help, and caste uplift. Polanyi is useful for identifying the constituency for a counter-movement against the market, but tells us little about the social or political complexities of constructing such a movement. To locate the reasons for the decline of the counter-movement in Kanyakumari, I turn therefore to an empirical observation of the civil society within which the counter-movement arose. In doing this, I argue against Partha Chatterjee’s influential view that civil society as a conceptual category does not apply to “popular politics in most of the world,” and is not useful for tracing non-European, post-colonial, and subaltern modernities. By contrast, my case shows the presence of civil society – as a sphere of autonomous and routinized association and publicity – among subaltern groups in rural India. I argue that it is precisely by locating the counter-movement of fishworkers within civil society that one can map the multiple negotiations that take place as subaltern classes are integrated into the market, and into liberal democracy, and explain the difficulties of extending and sustaining the counter-movement itself.

Quantum Microwave Photodetection Using Superconducting Josephson Circuits.

Superconducting circuits have recently become a major contender for the implementation of quantum computers owing to their compatibility with existing microchip fabrication technologies. Their utility stems largely from their ability to be coupled with resonant cavities for the purposes of trapping and relaying microwave radiation. Because of this feature, scientists are able to transmit quantum information from a variety of qubits. Though quantum-limited amplifiers exist, unfortunately there currently exists no microwave photon counter capable of single shot quantum detection. Hence, we use superconducting circuits with Josephson junctions to design a microwave photon detector based on a modified phase qubit that exhibits a bandwidth of 4GHz, and a detection fidelity of 98%. We use metastable barrier transition (driven by incident photons) to create an avalanche effect analogous to current photo-diodes. Linear coupling of the junction flux with the radiation permits photodetection from an arbitrary quantum source in the GHz range. We show the device to be robust to changes in drive frequency, temporal photon width, and resonator quality factor, and we optimize our device with respect to these parameters. We show the device to be stable over the necessary time scales, and yet sensitive enough to accurately measure photons on demand.

Feasibility of Determining Radioactivity in Lungs Using a Thyroid Uptake Counter

The feasibility of using a thyroid uptake counter, normally used to measure the uptake of radioactive iodine in thyroid treatments, to assay radioactivity deposited in a persons lungs has been investigated. Variations in radioactive material distributions in the lungs, the response of the detector system to radionuclides of interest to homeland security, and the change in detection efficiency due to the varying thicknesses of intervening tissue of the victims have been simulated using the Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code (MCNP5) developed by Los Alamos National Laboratory. Point source and homogenously distributed models were created for Co-60, I-131, Cs-137, Ir-192, and Am-241 sources to simulate radiation transport between the lungs of multiple phantom models representing children and adults and the radiation detection system. To validate the simulations undertaken, the response of the counter to radiation sources in air and behind layers of Lucite have been modeled and compared to measured results.

Velocity and temperature distributions of turbulent plane jet interaction with the nonlinear oppositive progressive gravity wave and ocean current

The variation of velocity and temperature distribution in arbitrary profile along the centerline in turbulent which encounters non-linearity regular progressive gravity wave and steady uniform flow right in front are investigated analytically and verified by existing experiments. Firstly, the action of periodic waves and current are incorporated into the equation of motion as an external force and applied radiation stress for evaluating the velocity distribution over arbitrary lateral cross section. Based on the momentum exchange after the interaction between turbulent plane jet and oppositive non-linearity wave and uniform flow, the physical characteristics of jet-wave and current are able to be determined theoretically. Secondly, there are critical sections in both velocity and temperature transport processes when the turbulent plane jet influenced by wave and current motion. Fluctuating function will be close to infinity, is the order of wave sharpness; Average velocity for every wave period along the centerline approach to zero, That¡¦s thanks to the momentum of plane jet is extruded by the momentum of wave and current, Beyond the critical section, characteristics of the jet is no longer existing, such phenomena mean that only the wave and current dominating. Velocity and temperature distribution in the zone of flow developed are Gaussian curve, as has been measured in experiment. The momentum extrusion of counter flow in jet is significant in the deep water and small wave; The velocity distribution coefficient is changing with the increasing of counter flow velocity, owing to the entrainment effect, and the potential core will reducing with the increasing of counter flow velocity.
