Demers, Cynthia January 2012 (has links)

Dalphond, Ariane January 2015 (has links)

Factors contributing to commitment in Chinese interethnic couples

Zhong, Xinmiao January 2013 (has links)
Interethnic relationships are increasingly common in society, yet interethnic couples also have a higher divorce rate compared to intraethnic couples. Given these facts, it is important that researchers identify factors that contribute to couples commitment in interethnic relationships, but to date, such research is rare. This thesis investigated the factors that contribute to the commitment of Chinese interethnic relationships. In order to do that, a qualitative study and a quantitative study were conducted. Johnson s commitment framework was found suitable in the qualitative study. Thus a cultural model that incorporated Johnson s personal commitment and a new construct couple cultural identity was established for the quantitative study to find whether love, satisfaction (i.e. dyadic adjustment) and couple cultural identity (i.e. acculturation to the partner and similarity of couple s individualism/collectivism) would predict personal commitment and whether each variable would account for unique variance in personal commitment of the participants. The quantitative study found significant relationships between love and personal commitment, satisfaction and personal commitment of Chinese interethnic couples. Also, couple cultural identity was important for women s personal commitment. These findings suggest that partners in interethnic relationships may define personal commitment in different ways with men emphasising love and satisfaction, and women emphasising love and acculturation to their partner.

Attachment Style and Nonverbal Behavioral Synchrony in Romantic Couples

Olderbak, Sally January 2011 (has links)
Eshkol-Wachmann Movement Notation was applied to describe and quantify nonverbal behavioral synchrony between romantic partners. The interaction of 30 couples was observed across three study conditions, Pre-Stressor, and two Post-Stressor conditions when the female partner had been targeted with a stress manipulation. Participant-level behavior, and forms of dyadic synchrony were predicted with the male and females' self-reported attachment style. Results support theories from the attachment literature.

The Effectiveness of Religiously Tailored Couple Counseling

Hook, Joshua 13 November 2009 (has links)
Large numbers of couples seek treatment from religious counselors who integrate religion and spirituality (R/S) into counseling. The present dissertation reviewed the literature examining the effectiveness of R/S counseling. Several R/S treatments were helpful in treating psychological problems. There was little evidence that R/S treatments outperformed secular treatments. In Study 1, a nationwide survey was conducted that examined the beliefs of Christian counselors about integrating R/S into couple counseling. Christian counselors (N = 630) completed measures of religious commitment, experience in couple counseling, attitudes toward using religious techniques in couple counseling, and the use of theory in couple counseling. Counselors were highly religious, and religious commitment was a positive predictor of viewing religious techniques as appropriate. Christian couple counseling was popular and widely practiced, although there was wide variation in the number of couples seen per counselor. Counselors were influenced by both secular and Christian theories of couple counseling. There were several differences between professional, pastoral, and lay counselors, indicating that each subgroup be treated separately rather than grouped together. In Study 2, the nature of Christian couple counseling was described and the effectiveness of Christian couple counseling was examined using a longitudinal study. Counselors (N = 20) completed a measure of religious commitment, and clients (N = 60) completed measures of religious commitment, the use of religious and secular techniques in counseling, relationship satisfaction, working alliance with the counselor, and satisfaction with counseling at three time points during counseling. Religious techniques were common in couple counseling, and most were used in about 50% of the sessions. The religious commitment of counselors was a positive predictor of the number of religious techniques used in counseling. Clients attending Christian couple counseling reported increases in relationship satisfaction and working alliance with the counselor over time, and reported high levels of satisfaction with counseling. Working alliance with the counselor was a positive predictor of both relationship satisfaction and satisfaction with counseling. A close match in religious commitment between counselor and client did not predict greater improvement in relationship satisfaction, but it did predict a stronger working alliance throughout counseling.

Models of Forgiveness and Adult Romantic Attachment in Ended Relationships: Forgiveness Over Time

Cooke, Kathryn Louise 01 January 2006 (has links)
This study examined models of self and other as they relate to attachment, forgiveness, emotional and cognitive reactions to a breakup, relationship variables, and positive and negative feelings toward the self and former partner after a romantic relationship is ended. This study also tested how these variables change over time. Data were collected over a period of five weeks from 130 undergraduates who had experienced a breakup within the two weeks prior to beginning the study. Data were analyzed with a series of univariate and multivariate analyses of variance. Results found that there were differences in how participants reacted to the relationship breakup based on attachment style. There were some changes over time in the variables for all the attachment styles, and there was only one interaction between time and attachment style. Results are discussed in terms of previous research findings. Limitations of the current study are discussed and suggestions for future research are presented.

Um estudo acerca da escolha pela vasectomia a partir de referenciais da psicanálise intersubjetiva e de gênero / A study on the choice for vasectomy based on notions of intersubjective psychoanalysis and gender studies

Honda, Cintia Morinaga 07 November 2014 (has links)
The aim of the research is to analyse the choice for undergoing a vasectomy procedure considering theoretical principles in intersubjective psychoanalysis and gender studies. From the medical point of view, the vasectomy is a contraceptive surgical procedure of irreversible character underwent by men. The choice for this subject is associated with the growing number of vasectomies carried out in Brazil and with the fact that it is a procedure that concerns the couple as a whole at the interface between conjugality and parenthood, an issue that deserves more study. The present study holds as elements intrinsic to this choice: changes in the society related to gender differences in the family, work environment and social relations, along with the shift in marital bonds. As for the clinical and qualitative methodology, semi-structured interviews have been carried out with two couples between 31-37 years old (the period of major female fertility) who intended to undergo the vasectomy procedure. The interviews would address subjects related to the process of opting for the surgery, the dynamics of the couple and the family history combined with social, cultural and generation issues. Due to the complexity of the subject, the present dissertation is divided into chapters on the decisions the couple has to make, the problematic of gender and on public policies concerning contraceptive methods. It was concluded that the analysed couples decision for vasectomy is related to birth control connected with socio-economic issues. It is also related to different fantasies regarding the establishment of bonds: the hope for a more pleasant sexual life not linked to reproduction, and the management of reproduction associated with the control and maintenance of the relationship. Also, the choice for vasectomy was the result of the current public policies that aim for contraceptive methods, in addition to gender issues. It could be verified in the interviewed couples that, although the vasectomy procedure takes place in the male body, the choice for this contraceptive method belongs in the marital sphere and, thus, it is inherent both in interactional aspects of such a sphere and in the marital bond

Adapting and utilizing the minority stress model: adding sexually marginalized Latinx voices and cultural factors

Gutierrez, Dumayi Maria 01 May 2019 (has links)
Scholars have utilized the Minority Stress Model to explore external and internal stressors, coping mechanisms, social support and mental health outcomes for sexually marginalized populations. However, scarce studies examine Latinx sexually marginalized experiences and associations within the model. Thus, the goal of this study was to integrate sexually marginalized Latinx experiences in the Minority Stress Model. The theoretical frameworks utilized were Minority Stress Theory, Intersectionality and Experiential Theory rooted in the Couple and Family Therapy field. First, an explanation of the Minority Stress Model, influences of prominent Latinx cultural factors (i.e., tradition, familism, gender, and acculturation) in model processes, and a proposed Latinx Minority Stress Model is provided. Further, clinical implications are discussed through intersectional multicultural competency and Experiential Theory techniques. Second, a quantitative study with a sample comprised of 76 Latinx lesbian women in romantic relationships will be discussed. Regression analysis indicated that participants with family closeness and positive romantic relationship quality reported lower internalized heterosexism (i.e., internal stress). Additionally, higher internalized heterosexism outcomes predicted higher reports of anxiety and depression. Positive relationship quality perception also statistically mediated internalized heterosexist thoughts and depression. Implications for clinical work are discussed using Experiential Theory. Finally, research and clinical implications are examined through an integration of the proposed Latinx Minority Stress Model and quantitative analysis results. Limitations and future directions are discussed.

Modeling and optimization of a low speed doubly salient permanent magnet machine for tidal application

Alli, Soklni-Sita 28 June 2019 (has links)
This study deals with a doubly salient permanent magnet machine, used in direct drive for tidal application. First, different technological approaches used for tidal power generation are reviewed. Then, the generator is modelled by circuit approach. This method allows for magnetic saturation and airgap variation to be taken into account, while offering an interesting compromise between the accuracy of the results and the simulation time. The DSPM model is then coupled with its converter. A thermal model is also implemented. This model is then used to optimize simultaneously the DSPM teeth and its control parameters in order to maximize the torque and reduce its ripples which are important in salient machines. The control parameters are also optimized on a tidal cycle. The first criterion to be minimized on cycle is the torque ripples. Joule losses are added as a second criterion and Pareto fronts are deduced and analyzed. Finally, tests at no-load and also at load operations on a prototype 2 kW, 50 rpm validate the theoretical model developed
