The Effects of Marital Attachment and Family-of-Origin Stressors on Body Mass IndexBates, Merle Natasha 01 June 2015 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effect of couple's attachment behavior on family-of-origin (FOO) issues and body mass index (BMI). Previous research has indicated that family and couple relational factors may influence BMI. The vulnerability and stress model provided a theoretical framework for understanding how attachment behaviors may give greater adaptability to managing vulnerabilities from family stress. 1214 couples between the ages of 18 and 70, who identified themselves as in a serious relationship were surveyed using the RELATE questionnaire; both partners responded. Results indicated that there was a significant association between FOO stress and adult BMI for both males and females. There was also an association between attachment behaviors and female BMI, but not male BMI. Finally attachment behavior did not moderate the relationship between FOO stressors and BMI. Clinical implications include using clinical models that focus on intergenerational problems when weight concerns are presented in therapy and, for women especially, focusing on couple attachment behaviors when there are weight concerns.

Technology mediated communication in intimate relationshipsNorton, Aaron Michael January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Family Studies and Human Services / Joyce Baptist / Very little research has been conducted to understand how the technology revolution has changed and impacted couple relationships. The proposed study examined the impact of technology on couples in committed relationships through the lens of the couple and technology framework. Specifically, this study used data from 2,826 European couples to examine associations between online boundary crossing, online intrusion, relationship satisfaction, and partner responsiveness. The results suggest that when participants’ reported that their partner checked up on their online activities more frequently that this was linked with lower scores on relationship satisfaction and partner responsiveness. Also, decreased scores for relationship satisfaction and partner responsiveness were associated with increased acceptance for their partner using the Internet to talk with someone attractive about everyday life or pop culture, personal information, and relationship troubles or concerns. Lastly, the results suggest that men, but not women, who reported greater acceptability for online boundary crossing were more likely to have partners who reported lower relationship satisfaction in their relationships. Implications for clinicians, relationship educators, and researchers are discussed.

BENESSERE E DISAGIO PSICHICO DEI PARTNER NELLA TRANSIZIONE ALLA GENITORIALITA'. DIFFERENTI PROSPETTIVE DI ANALISI / Couple’s well-being and distress in the transition to parenthood. A multi-method approachNOVELLI, MARGHERITA 17 March 2014 (has links)
In the psychological literature the transition to parenthood has been always considered a critical period for the couples. This process should begin during the pregnancy, the period during which the couple’s relationship should develops from the original dyadic structure to a new triangular structure.
It must be underlyned the importance of the process of “renovation” of the relationship. This process includes the acquisition of the parental role and protects relavant marital and parental aspects such as the feeding of the marital relationship.
Despite couples’ awerness of the importance to cope with the changes that the transition entails, often result unprepared. In this sense the perinatal period can be seen as a potentially stressfull event.
This dissertation aims to study the possible paths of transition to parenthood focusing on partener’s psychological well-being and distress in relation to their perception of the quality of the couple’s relationship.
The results show different trajectories of psychological well-being and distress in the perinatal period and a relation between the couples’ psychological condition and their perception of the quality of couple’s relationship.

Recovery following an acute myocardial infarction : impact on the quality of life of patients and their parntersMcDowell, Janis Kathleen January 2002 (has links)
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the industrialised world, and places a heavy burden on society in terms of personal disability and health care costs. The first signs of CHD often present acutely as a myocardial infarction (AMI), commonly known as a heart attack. Survivors of a heart attack remain vulnerable to poor health-related quality of life (HRQOL), further cardiac events, and increased morbidity due to a progression of CHD. Thus, the implementation of interventions to reduce these risks is an important public health strategy. To date, secondary prevention and rehabilitation efforts post-AMI focus primarily on the patient. However, it is argued that recovery from AMI occurs within a social context, and that risk reduction strategies are likely to be enhanced if interventions take into account the impact of the event on the quality of life of patients and their partners. Evidence from a review of couple relationship literature indicates that a significant proportion of couples experiences poor HRQOL (i.e., physical and emotional wellbeing) when coping with stressful life events, and that interactive aspects of a couple relationship (i.e., dyadic functioning and behaviour) are associated with individual well-being at such a time. Information from studies of couples dealing with recovery from heart attack is sparse, but tends to reflect the findings from the broader literature. Further research is required with post-AMI couples, though, as there are a number of shortcomings associated with the existing evidence. For instance, it is derived from studies conducted with, mostly small, samples of convenience; many different instruments are used to collect the data; and no studies specifically measure HRQOL. Analytically, most evidence is obtained with univariate and bivariate statistics, and data are analysed as groups of patients or partners, as opposed to dyads. Where multivariable analyses are undertaken a number of bivariate relationships are no longer significant after accounting for covariates such as age and gender; and few researchers investigate predictive associations between dyadic functioning/behaviour and HRQOL outcomes. Finally, there is a paucity of information from comparative analyses. Thus, it is not known whether the well-being of post-AMI couples over time is better than, similar to, or worse than, for example, that in the general population. The research program underpinning this thesis, the QUT-AMI Project, comprised two studies designed to address these methodological issues. The first was an observational, cross-sectional, pilot study conducted in 1998 with 26 post-AMI couples. The main investigation was a prospective cohort study of 93 post-AMI couples undertaken in 1999-2000. In both studies the samples comprised a consecutive series of adult males younger than 75 years who had experienced a first AMI, and their female partners. The average couple in both studies was middle-aged, had been married for many years, and both members of the dyad were working at the time of the heart attack. Prospective participants were identified in major clinical centres that admit cardiac patients, and couples were recruited to the project soon after the patient's heart attack. Clinical data were collected in hospital. Further data were collected with self-administered questionnaires during a home visit at 1 month (pilot and main study), and by mailed questionnaire or during a home visit at 6 months(main study) after the heart attack. The pilot study was undertaken to test recruitment and data collection procedures in preparation for the second (main) study, measure couples' HRQOL at 1 month after the event using the SF-36, and qualitatively investigate life issues for couples coping with recovery from AMI. In the main study couples' HRQOL outcomes were measured at 1 and 6 months post-AMI using the SF-36, and examined for changes over that time. The outcomes were also compared with those from matched population norms to estimate the impact of a heart attack on couples' HRQOL during the early and later recovery period. Additionally, the following relationships were investigated to determine the extent to which:* patients' dyadic functioning (e.g. happiness/satisfaction with relationship, measured with the Marital Adjustment Scale) and use of dyadic behaviour (e.g., hiding concerns and negative feelings from the other member of the dyad, measured with the Protective Buffering Scale) at 1 month predicted patients' emotional well-being at 6 months post-AMI;* partners' dyadic functioning and behaviour at 1 month predicted partners' emotional well-being at 6 months post-AMI;* patients' and partners' dyadic functioning at 1 month predicted patients' or partners' emotional well-being at 6 months post-AMI; and* patients' and partners' dyadic behaviour at 1 month predicted patients' or partners' emotional well-being at 6 months post-AMI. Exploratory analyses were also undertaken to determine the effect of dyadic discrepancies in functioning and behaviour, at 1 month after the heart attack, on patients' and partners' emotional well-being at 6 months after the event. Important findings were as follows:* At 1 month after an AMI the HRQOL of couples is impaired. The major impact is on physical well-being for patients, and emotional well-being for their partners.* In general, couples' HRQOL improves between 1 and 6 months after an AMI.* At 6 months after an AMI, the HRQOL of average couples is similar to that of their peers in the normal population.* There are subgroup variations in the quality of life of post-AMI couples, and these are associated with age, clinically poor physical health, and depression.* The combination of patients' and partners' use of dyadic behaviour at 1 month after an AMI explains 7% of the variation in patients' emotional well-being at 6months after the event, after adjustment for patients' concurrent physical wellbeing and prior levels of emotional well-being, as well as duration of couple relationships.* The combination of partners' perceptions of dyadic functioning and use of dyadic behaviour at 1 month after an AMI explains 5% of the variation in partners' emotional well-being at 6 months after the event, after adjustment for partners' concurrent physical well-being and prior levels of emotional well-being, as well as duration of couples' relationships.* Patients have poorer emotional well-being at 6 months after an AMI if partners use dyadic behaviour infrequently at 1 month after the event.* Partners have poorer emotional well-being at 6 months after an AMI if they are not satisfied/unhappy with the functioning of their relationships at 1 month after the event. Adjusted exploratory analyses, undertaken to determine the extent to which dyadic discrepancies in perceptions of functioning or use of protective buffering behaviour, predict emotional well-being, show that patients who are less satisfied/unhappier with functioning than their partners at 1 month after an AMI have poor emotional wellbeing at 6 months after the event; patients who use the behaviour more frequently than their partners at 1 month after an AMI have poor emotional well-being at 6months after the event; and partners who are less satisfied/unhappier with functioning than their patients at 1 month after an AMI have poor emotional well-being at 6months after the event. The evidence from the QUT-AMI Project supports the proposition that the interaction that occurs within a couple relationship, combined with individual characteristics of members of a dyad, influences the extent to which a heart attack impacts on couples' HRQOL. It is argued that it is not enough to merely focus on implementing secondary prevention strategies with post-AMI patients. Given that poor emotional well-being is known to predict adverse cardiac events, and premature mortality due to cardiac disease, it is recommended that a couple-focused intervention designed to meet specific needs should be implemented with at-risk couples as a public health strategy to improve not only the patients' quality of life but also that of his partner. Further research is recommended to determine the extent to which such an intervention improves post-AMI couples' quality of life.

The purpose of this research was to explore the perceptions of Haitian women that had immigrated to Quebec in the past five years, of their sexual relationships with men and the extent to which it is reflected in the different types of conjugal relationships.
After choosing a qualitative research method, the intersectional feminist theory has been adopted for the analysis. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 9 Haitian women, aged 18 and 60 years and having immigrated to Quebec in the past five years.
The women’s perceptions of sexual relationships have been reported as being a set of practices and discourses interrelated built since childhood and reproducing the unequal relationships between men and women that exist in the Haitian society and in the couples. These unequal relationships are transmitted through the generations and through most of the social institutions such as family, school, culture, laws. This process is also influenced by socio-economic and power issues.
The results of this research give scientific data on women sexuality and couple relationships as well as the influence of immigration process. These results also emphasize the need for the Haitian social work to encourage the development of economic empowerment of women and their participation in current debates in society on the development of women. / Memwa sa a vle etidye ki pèsepsyon fanm ayisyèn yo genyen de rapò seksyel yo ak gason, e nan ki mezi pèsepsyon sa yo repwodwi kalite relasyon ki egziste ant yomenm ak nèg yo.

Same-Sex Couples' Lived Experiences of the Repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act's (DOMA) Section ThreeBosley, Alicia Anne 01 January 2014 (has links)
Same-sex couples are affected by the social and political climates in which they live, as these create the difference between acceptance and legalization, and discrimination and prohibition, of their relationships. This contingence is made increasingly impactful by the privileges and protections afforded to married couples by the federal government; same-sex couples, along with other couples that choose not to, or cannot, marry, are excluded from these benefits. Following the June 26, 2013 ruling that Section Three of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defined marriage as between a man and a woman, was unconstitutional, same-sex couples were given access to over 1,100 federal protections and benefits and supported legally for the first time. My research explored the lived experiences of same-sex couples following this milestone in order to develop an understanding of the psychological and relational effects of the DOMA repeal on same-sex couples. This understanding may assist therapists working with these couples by increasing comprehension of their context and the effects of the DOMA repeal on their internal and relationship functioning. By understanding these aspects, therapists may work more capably and sensitively with same-sex couples, and be more informed regarding potential problems these clients may bring to therapy. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed in order to gather comprehensive data on the topic, utilize the strengths of both methodologies, and enhance the results of each method with the other. A single instrument, an online survey, was utilized. The quantitative paradigm provided numerical data on the experiences of same-sex couples following the DOMA repeal, as well as differences in experiences based on variance in state laws. Under the qualitative paradigm, phenomenological methodology was utilized to explore and convey participants' experience of the repeal in their own words. Responses were collected via survey to allow for more anonymity for participants, as well as a more representative sample of same-sex couples across the country. Qualitative and quantitative questions were included on the survey; responses were analyzed separately, and then merged during interpretation. Implications for clinical practice derived from this study are reviewed, as well as implications for advocacy work and directions for further research. It is hoped that this study will provide a better understanding of same-sex couples' lived experiences following the repeal of DOMA's Section Three, and provide implications for therapists working with these couples.

Infertility is recognized as being not only a medical illness, but also a social and emotional condition (Burns & Covington, 2006; Pawar et al., 2020; The Lancet Global Health, 2022). Although studies have increasingly begun to investigate the impact of infertility on psychological and social well-being (e.g., Drosdzol & Skrzypulec, 2008; Hasanpoor-Azghdy et al., 2015), little remains known about the sexual well-being of couples undergoing fertility treatment. Research has shown that couples seeking assisted reproductive technology (ART) are more likely to experience sexual difficulties than fertile couples (Starc et al., 2019). However, very few studies have examined the factors that may explain these difficulties in couples seeking ART. Hence, using a biopsychosocial approach to the understanding of infertility (Gerrity, 2001; Grinion, 2005; Williams et al., 1992) and sexuality (Althof et al., 2005; McCabe et al., 2010), this thesis examines both infertility-specific and dyadic factors underlying the sexual well-being of infertile couples.
To better understand the infertility-specific factors associated with the sexual function of couples seeking ART, a first dyadic cross-sectional study was conducted with 185 mixed-sex couples seeking ART who completed online the Fertility Quality of Life Tool and either the Female Sexual Function Index (women) or the International Index of Erectile Function (men). The study examined the association between personal and relational stressors and the sexual desire, orgasm, arousal, and sexual satisfaction of couples seeking ART. The associations between diagnosis and treatment-related factors and both partners’ domains of sexual function and sexual satisfaction were also examined to determine whether these variables should be included as covariates in the main analyses. Path analyses revealed that for men and women, infertility-related emotional stressors were associated with their own and their partners’ lower sexual desire. For women, experiencing greater infertility-related emotional stressors was also associated with their partner’s lower sexual satisfaction and experiencing greater infertility-related mind-body stressors was associated with their partner’s lower sexual arousal. Infertility-related relational stressors were also associated with individuals’ own lower sexual arousal and satisfaction and their partner’s lower sexual satisfaction. For women, experiencing greater relational stressors was also associated with their own lower sexual desire and orgasm. These results suggest that interventions addressing the emotional, mind-body, and relational spheres of couples seeking ART may help facilitate improvements in sexual function and satisfaction and better serve infertile couples’ needs.
Building on the results of the first study, which suggest that couples’ subjective experience of infertility and treatment, particularly relational stressors, seem to be more strongly associated with their sexual well-being than objective treatment-related factors, the second study aimed to investigate the relational processes that underly couples’ sexual well-being. More specifically, the study examined whether perceptions of the partner’s dyadic coping (DC) and of how both partners cope together (common DC) are associated with both partners’ sexual well-being in couples seeking ART. Participants included 232 couples with medical infertility who completed questionnaires assessing dyadic coping and sexual well-being (infertility-related sexual concerns, sexual distress, and sexual satisfaction). The path analyses revealed that perceptions of partners’ use of higher negative DC were associated with individuals’ own lower sexual well-being. Perceptions of partners’ use of higher positive DC were associated with higher sexual satisfaction for men and greater infertility-related sexual concerns for women. Perceptions of higher use of common DC were associated with both partners’ higher sexual well-being. For men, perceptions of higher use of common DC were also associated with their partner’s fewer infertility-related sexual concerns (partner effect). Analyses adjusted for relationship satisfaction. These results suggest that couples’ sexual well-being during fertility treatment could be facilitated by promoting greater common DC and highlight that the interpersonal context surrounding these couples’ sexuality should be routinely discussed with both members of the couple.
