Diana Mara da Silva 24 April 2012 (has links)
This study aimed to analyze and discuss the images of the teacher figure circulating in magazines targeted to professionals in the field of education. To this end, it was established a comparison between the images, the headlines and the subheadings of the covers, and the contents of the reports present in the inside of the magazines, checking whether the statements of its covers established consistent relationship with its contents. The corpus is composed of three numbers of the magazine named Revista Educação, their covers (verbal and nonverbal statements) and their reports, of which excerpts were selected for analysis. In order to support this analysis of this corpus it was performed a literature review of the assumptions of the dialogic theory of language developed by Bakhtin and the Circle, considering especially the concepts of concrete statement, genre and dialogism treated in the works translated to Portuguese: Estética da Criação Verbal (2003) and Marxismo e Filosofia da Linguagem (2006), as well as writers that consider the image as a statement itself and the history of education and of the teaching profession in Brazil. There was also a need to bring in contributions from other areas of knowledge such as: architecture, art and advertising, so that it could have been carried out a deep and detailed analysis of the nonverbal items constituting the corpus of this work. The results of the analysis indicate a tendency to the existence of inconsistencies between the statements aired on magazine covers and on the contents of the reports. Another point to be highlighted is related to the image (re)created by such statements, which sets down the teachers role in society and portrays, in a ridiculous and unrealistic way, both this professional and his day by day as a teacher. The intention of this work was to contribute to lines of research in the Applied Linguistics area that stimulate the reflection on the statements broadcasted on magazine covers and in their reports, as to encourage the presence of activities that help learners, especially those who attend language classes belonging to the years of Basic Education and Secondary Education, develop critical reading of verbal and nonverbal items of texts.

Ivan Carlos de Oliveira 18 August 2015 (has links)
The magazines play an important communicative role in the spread of information, and the cover of magazines is largely responsible for attracting attention and arouse interest in the player. The covers are composed of images and texts that complement each other and give meaning to the statement. This dissertation discusses the importance and characteristics of verb-visual language of magazine covers Generation JC and seeks to identify what kinds of interference the editorial line of the newspaper company about the creative act of the cover. Serve as analyzed in two magazine covers the years 2009 and 2012. Specifically, this work aims to present the discursive regularities and the specifics of magazine covers Generation JC and point out how the senses of the verb-visual language of the covers are built. To achieve this goal, the following categories of analysis from the theoretical framework underpinned primarily in Bakhtin and his circle were selected: compositional form, theme, style, dialogism. In addition, this paper analyzes elements of the verbal-visual language, such as the colors, the layout, the fonts and size, as well as photographic images and their deformation.

Modélisation numérique d'assemblage soudé par laser de châssis pour sièges de voiture, sous sollicitations dynamiques / Numerical modeling and failure prediction of laser welded joints in a support of car seat

Arif, Waseem 10 April 2017 (has links)
Nowadays environmental policies have become more strict towards the automotive industry to reduce the CO2 emission, therefore lightweight structures using high strength materials have become of great interest. Two different FE models namely “Solid Refine Model” (SRM) and “Shell Coarse Model” (SCM) have been developed and are being used as standard models by Faurecia Automotive Seating (Caligny). The SRM is capable to predict accurately the local welding behavior but unfortunately, due to its high computational cost, the SRM is not suitable for a full car seat modeling. On the other hand, the SCM is computationally efficient but it cannot predict the weld line behaviour. The aim of the present thesis is to develop a multimaterial FE model within the Ls-dyna commercial software, which will enhance the SCM to allow the accurate prediction of weld line behavior until failure with a reasonable computational cost. The standard quadrilateral shell FE is developed and enriched using a recently developed method called the “Interpolation Covers Method” (ICM) to capture the solution gradients accurately without mesh refinement. An elasto-plastic material model is developed within Ls-dyna commercial software which takes into account two different materials namely BM and HAZ inside a single shell element. The Generalized Incremental Stress State dependent damage Model has been implemented as a UMAT within Ls-dyna commercial software to predict the weld line failure in SCM. The different developments have allowed the SCM to become able to predict the complex behavior of the welded line accurately until failure, at low computational cost compatible with the industrial needs.

Animerade bokomslag i ljudboksappar : Att väcka intresse med hjälp av rörlig grafik / Animated covers in audiobook apps : To create interest through motion graphics

Jürss, Matilda January 2020 (has links)
On many media platforms, there are often some form of moving elements, for example, certain songs in Spotify are accompanied by an animation, or shows on Netflix are previewed through a short trailer. However, this is not something that has yet reached the audio and e-book world, where the apps still only consist of static elements and covers. In this study, therefore, the possibility of moving book covers in these apps is explored, more specifically how such a moving book cover can be designed to create more interest in a book. To reach an answer to the question, the theory of book covers, motion graphics and design principles has been collected, after which an interview has been conducted with users of these apps, to get a better understanding of how they use the apps, and what gets them interested in a cover. Subsequently, two proposals for moving book covers were produced through a design process where concept ideas were set against each other in a Pugh chart. From there on, one of the concepts was taken to further development, and a storyboard and finally an animation was produced. The new covers were then evaluated in surveys that collected both qualitative and quantitative data from the participants, to evaluate whether the covers were perceived as more interesting than the static covers. The study found that the moving covers were perceived as more interesting, and that it was important for the design that they were kept simple and clear, and that they are representative of the genre in which the book is categorized.

Unimodular Covers and Triangulations of Lattice Polytopes

v.Thaden, Michael 17 June 2008 (has links)

Brännlund, Hector January 2022 (has links)
This essay explores the magazine covers of Hemmets Journal between the years of 1921 and 1990. The first issue of the magazine was released one hundred years ago. The aim of the study is to examine how the motives have changed during the years in composition, color and text. The methods applied to this essay are formal analysis. Heinrich Wölfflin ́s set of five pairs of opposed visual concepts help distinguish when the clearest breakingpoints of the magazine covers occur. A style analysis is applied to the breakingpoints to examine if the contemporary structure of the society is depicted in the magazine covers. The results show for instance that you can spot the society in different ways in the magazine covers depending on what year it is and the most representative motive is women.

Effect of Protective Covers Against Biotic and Abiotic Disorders for Grape Production in Virginia

Redoy, Mahadi Hasan 03 January 2024 (has links)
Grapes (Vitis spp.), globally cultivated for wine and other grape-based products, are susceptible to various diseases, pests, and disorders. These challenges are particularly pervasive in Virginia and viticultural regions in similar climates. Thus, growers routinely use insecticides and fungicides to protect their fruits. However, frequent or excessive use of these chemicals can pose environmental and human health risks and increase the chances of fungicide resistance. Many crop production systems use physical barriers to shield plant surfaces from biotic and abiotic environmental factors, particularly in Asian countries. This study evaluated the efficacy of paper bags, umbrella-style covers, and fruit-zone shelters in mitigating fungal diseases, insect infestations, and other factors that damage grape clusters. A series of field experiments were conducted at four commercial vineyards in Virginia and one research experiment station at Virginia Tech in five years with eight grape cultivars. Our results highlighted the importance of bag and fruit-zone shelter applications. Especially when these protection measures were applied around bloom, we observed reductions in the level of multiple diseases and insect- and bird-related damages. Fruit bagging resulted in significantly lower (P ≤ 0.05) mean severity and incidence of black rot, sour rot, sooty mold, and grape berry moth damage. Similarly, we found a significantly lower mean incidence of black rot, ripe rot, sour rot, and bird damage with the application of fruit-zone shelters. Thus, fruit bagging and fruit-zone shelter can be an effective cultural method for safeguarding grape clusters from different diseases, potentially reducing pesticide use and offering economic advantages to growers. / Master of Science / Grapes are produced for making wine and other grape-based products worldwide. However, grape production often faces challenges from diseases, pests, and environmental factors, especially in humid regions like Virginia. Grape growers use pesticides (insecticides and fungicides) to protect their crops. However, these chemicals can harm the environment and human health; moreover, these disease organisms and pests can become resistant to pesticides. In many parts of the world, especially in Asia, farmers use physical barriers like bags or covers to protect their crops from various harmful factors. In this study, we tested the effectiveness of paper bags, umbrella-style covers, and special shelters around the fruit area of grape plants against fungal diseases, insect problems, and other damages. We conducted a series of experiments over five years in four commercial vineyards and a research station in Virginia, using eight grape cultivars. Our findings showed that using bags and shelters around the grapes, especially during the blooming period, was effective. Bagging the fruit led to significantly fewer cases of diseases (black rot, sour rot, and sooty mold) and grape berry moth damage. Likewise, using shelters around the fruit area resulted in significantly lower diseases (black rot, ripe rot, and sour rot) and bird damage. Therefore, these protective methods could offer more options for grape growers to protect yield from factors damaging their high-value crops.

Flea Beetle Populations and Their Management on Vegetables in Virginia

Mason, James Allen Cole 15 June 2018 (has links)
Flea beetles (FB), (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), are common pests of cabbage and eggplant, but little is known about the FB populations in Virginia, their impact on yield, or the most effective control methods. This research investigates the FB populations and impact of their feeding injury on cabbage and eggplant in Southwest Virginia, and determines the most efficacious control methods. In Whitethorne, VA, cabbage and eggplant crops were vacuum sampled weekly throughout two summers. Crucifer flea beetle, Phyllotreta cruciferae (Goeze), and striped flea beetle, Phyllotreta striolata Fabr. were found on cabbage; whereas, eggplant flea beetle, Epitrix fucula (Crotch), and the tobacco flea beetle, Epitrix hirtipennis (Melsheimer) were found on eggplant. To evaluate the impact of FB feeding on these plants, insecticides were used to create a range of pest pressure. Flea beetle densities and defoliation was visually assessed weekly and individual plant as well as whole plot yields assessed at harvest. In both crops, as little as 20% defoliation significantly reduced yield, with higher defoliation resulting in lower yield. The efficacy of various insecticides was also evaluated; soil application of the systemic neonicotinoid dinotefuran had the fewest beetles, the least amount of leaf defoliation, and the highest yield in cabbage and eggplant. Lastly, deltamethrin-incorporated mesh row covers were evaluated and shown to provide excellent control of FB compared to an untreated row cover or a control; and comparable to the standard insecticide, dinotefuran. This research helps vegetable growers to better understand the severity of these pests and how to effectively combat them. / MSLFS
