The wide variety of magazines in the South African market and the economic relapse that has been
experienc,e d worldwide has given rise to the increasing competition for higher circulation figures
and advertising income. This phenomenon especially occurs between publications competing for
the same target audience, such as the women's magazines SARIE and rooi rose, competitors over
many years in the Afrikaans magazine market.
Magazine covers play a critical role in this rivalry due to the direct connection between the
popularity of the cover and circulation figures. The more popular the cover of a publication, the
higher the sales, circulation and potential profitability will be. Thus it is of the utmost importance for
any publication to make the suitable cover selections, considering that the wrong choices can
contribute towards a decrease in circulation and eventually fatal consequences for the publication.
This study endeavours to determine which requirements magazine covers should meet to
be successful and also which tendencies can be identified in the cover choices of SARIE and rooi
rose and how these tendencies can be explained.
In literature it was found that there are several requirements and directions to which
magazine covers should account to be able to be achieving success. It was also found that
magazine covers consist of several elements, such as the logo (master-head), cover-girl/-photo,
background colours, text and also competitions (announced on the cover).
SARIE and rooi rose's covers were analysed in accordance with the requirements for
magazine covers. It was found that these magazine covers complied with the formal requirements
formulated in the literature consulted. It also appeared that the success of every cover and edition
is determined by the cover elements as a whole and not only the popularity of the "cover-girl" only.
Several aspects should thus be taken into account when planning the magazine cover.
It also appeared that although the cover choice sets an agenda for readers concerning the
topics they will eventually be thinking about and discussing, another dimension of agenda-setting
rather is to the point, namely the role readers' preferences play (through their personal feedback
and buying of magazines) regarding editors' decision in respect of covers. / Thesis (M.A. (Communication Studies))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2010

January 2003 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The thesis is based on the increasing importance of pictures in the 20th century. Pictures may be understood as (1) gaze stimulating and as (2) appearances charged with communicative potentiality. The use that the media make of the gaze is extremely conspicuous. Even in their ambiguity, pictures are veritable publicity instruments in a century during which news and information became gradually commercial goods in the hands of great communication groups. Our research sources are covers of best selling Brazilian magazines. Since the information market is intimately linked to politics and the analyzed period ranges from the late 60s (the starting point of press censorship by the government) to the late 80s (the first true election for the presidency of Brazil after censorship), it is important to problematize the communication theme as Brazil alternated from censorship and dictatorship to democracy. Magazine covers are performance signs of the big press and, at the same time, of the gaze structuring itself throughout the century: the gaze that seeks precise and fast information. Common strategies in magazine covers, uses of color, body expression codes, underlined themes which show the constitution of meanings suggested to the great amount of photos by the same communication media, are analyzed. Picture-composed synthesis establishes discussions, giving great importance to pictures since they exercise an excluding stance. Magazine covers allure the magazines' target public, or consumers. Beneath the magazines' syntheses lie... (Complete abstract, click electronic access below) / Doutor

Previous issue date: 2013-03-21 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Tropicalia emerged in late 1967 with the songs ―Alegria, Alegria‖ (Caetano Veloso) and ―Domingo no Parque‖ (Gilberto Gil). But it was in 1968 that the musical movement left his major works recorded. In that year were released records by Tom Zé, Os Mutantes, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and the collective record Tropicália ou panis et circensis. These albums represented a new moment in the Brazilian Music: opening the explicit cultural dialogues with other countries and with different artistic languages. Our work investigates how was, parallely, turned towards the Brazilian graphic design, from the analysis of the covers of these records, discussing the images with the songs. We started from Luiz Tatit s studies on song and the concept of cultural dialogue according to the Semiotics of Culture.

Abstract: Eugênio Hirsch (Vienna, 1923 - Rio de Janeiro, 2001) is best known by his work for the publishing house Civilização Brasileira in the first half of the 1960s, wich was marked by a large range of visual resources used with great freedom granted to him by editor Ênio Silveira. In the same period he made book covers for Globo, a publishing house based on the city of Porto Alegre. Although less expressive in number, these covers kept the same quality and freedom. After a short period in the USA, Hirsch was hired by Madri based publishing house Codex as art director, being responsible for El Mundo de los Museus collection. When returning to Brazil in the end of the 1960s, he begun to work for Livraria José Olympio Editora, in Rio de Janeiro. This research is centered in the relation between letters and images in Hirsch's book covers. This relation is studied by analizing the book covers made by Hirsch between 1959 and 1976. In this wide sampling, the most relevant and recurring caractheristics related to lettering and type in Hirsch's work are identified. Also presented is a sample of the graphic work done by some cover artists that had worked in Brazil during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, allowing a more accurate perception of the importance of Eugênio Hirsch's work.

This research focuses on analyzing Marius Lauritzen Bern's book cover production for Civilização Brasileira, during the 1960s. Marius was a self-taught designer who began his career in visual arts, in a time when the teaching of Design had still not been formalized in Brazil. Marius Bern began his partnership with the publishing Civilização Brasileira in 1965, through its visionary publisher Ênio Silveira. He joined them right after designer Eugênio Hirsch had left the company, and from 1965 to 1970 he stood as its chief designer. Ênio - owner of Civilização Brasileira - was considered an important Brazilian intellectual in the national cultural field and also an important figure in the fight against the military dictatorship. He was also the staunchest supporter of the changes adopted by the company in its book designs. The 1960s mark a twist in the graphic conventions adopted by the publishing culture and, therefore, in the Brazilian book market. Specific circumstances related to the practice of the profession, such as the ways in which book covers were created and the production processes that were available at the time, were addressed to ensure a better understanding of the graphic speech of the covers. Through the analysis it was possible to identify some recurrent visual solutions in Marius' book designs, which allow us to draw some conclusions regarding his work / Mestrado / Artes Visuais / Mestra em Artes

Hard Muscle, Slim Body : A Systemic Functional Analysis of the Covers of Men’s and Women’s Fitness MagazinesJansson, Pernilla January 2014 (has links)
Magazine covers are multimodal texts designed to draw the attention of potential readers. Health and fitness magazines, in particular, make up a large portion of the publishing industry, and previous research has pointed to their influence on readers’ perceptions of health and fitness. In order to interpret the multimodality of magazine covers, a different approach other than the purely linguistic one needs to be employed. Following the theoretical frameworks of Systemic Functional Linguistics and Social Semiotics, this study set out to investigate the verbal and visual construction of health on eight covers of Men’s Health and Women’s Health. The findings indicate that there are significant differences in how health is constructed on the men’s and women’s edition of the magazines. These differences mainly concern the way in which health is achieved, and the relationship between the viewers and the magazine. This not only indicates that different strategies were used to attract viewers, but also reveals something about the relationship the viewer is supposed to have with their bodies as well as their perceptions of health.

Throughout the last years, the city of Pichilemu has undergone a sharp spatial and demographic growth influenced partly by tourist activity, which it caused an increasing pressure on high ecological value areas and local biodiversity. Following the same trend as in Latin America, Chile has few studies on urban ecology; hence this study contributes with an assessment of avifauna and woody vegetation biodiversity in land covers belonging to the urban mosaic of Pichilemu. All field samplings were conducted during 2017 and 2018 summer times using bird counting and floristic inventories. Richness, abundance, alpha diversity indexes (Shannon-Wiener, Pielou and Simpson) of species were calculated, along with the proportion of endemic, native and threatened species. Moreover, the distance between sampling points and diverse components of the green infrastructure of Pichilemu city was analysed to demonstrate whether it influences the spatial distribution of alpha diversity parameters values. Avifauna species were classified into trophic guilds and three distinct categories (urban exploiter, urban adapter and urban avoider) basing on their response to urbanisation. Furthermore, in order to compare land covers regarding their biodiversity, Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's test were applied. Finally, a cluster analysis was carried out to see the similarity among land covers and sampling points.
The results show a bimodal distribution pattern on the Shannon index, since there are two groups of land covers with maximum values both in avifauna and woody vegetation in Pichilemu. The most diverse group in Shannon index is made up of natural land covers such as wetlands and water bodies, streams and water courses and tree-shaped scrubland. The second most diverse group in Shannon index is made up of hybrid land covers such as continuous urban fabric and discontinuous urban fabric. Most of avifauna species are native whilst the majority of woody vegetation species are exotic in Pichilemu. Even though continuous urban fabric is diverse, almost all individuals of avifauna belong to an urban exploiter species (Passer domesticus). On the other hand, individuals belonging to urban avoider species are prone to be found in diverse and less disturbed land covers such as wetlands and water bodies, streams and water courses, strands, dunes and sandbanks and tree-shaped scrubland. Likewise, these land covers contain the highest number of trophic guilds of avifauna. Regarding correlation analysis, the distance between sampling points and diverse green infrastructure components does not explain completely the spatial variability of alpha diversity parameters. Through cluster analysis, cluster comprised of wetlands and water bodies, streams and water courses, tree-shaped scrubland, shrub brush and plantations has outstanding diversity values. Therefore, these land covers should be prioritised for ecological restoration and biodiversity conservation measures.
