The Overland Cattle Trade

Massey, Travis Leon 08 1900 (has links)
One of the most fascinating subjects in all American history is the story of the great cow country. Its heyday was the twenty-year period from 1868 to 1888. It extended from below the Rio Grande on the south to well up in Saskatchewan in western Canada on the north. East and west it reached from the Rocky Mountains to about the Missouri- Arkansas border. It occupied a region nearly 2,000 miles long and from 200 to 700 miles wide--almost a million square miles in one vast open range. For countless years this region had been the home of millions of wild buffaloes, but in a very short time after 1868 it was transformed into a gigantic cattle kingdom. After two decades of spectacular existence, it just as suddenly passed away, and the cattle industry entered a new and in many ways an entirely different era. Texas cattle and Texas cattlemen played leading roles in this great drama of the West. The warm southern plains of Texas were the breeding place-the "incubator"-f or thousands of longhorn cattle, the broad prairies to the north were their feeding grounds, and the newly established railroad towns in Kansas and other states were the shipping points.

Salvador

Florida's Cattle Culture: Ethos And Enterprise In The Sunshine State

Zellner, Corinne E 01 January 2012 (has links)
Cattle ranching has been of major significance to Florida since the 16th century; however, few are aware of the historic, ecologic, economic and cultural influence of this industry. This study investigates the origins and impacts of the traditional customs and practices of Florida’s cattle ranchers, who preserve and reinvent this rich heritage today. Ranchers live closely with the land and their animals and, due to the often-uncertain and cyclical nature of the business, must possess resourcefulness and initiative to prosper. The image of the stoic cowboy has long been associated with the American West, yet before longhorn cattle ever crossed the western plains, Florida frontiers were populated with herds of unique “cracker” cows, descendants of cattle left behind by early Spanish settlers. Like the West, Florida experienced conflicts between ranchers and other land claimants, issues that continue in the 21st century. Modern ranchers contend with developers, environmental concerns, and increasing regulation, yet they persevere in passing on their cultural heritage. Agricultural lifestyles can be emotionally fulfilling, but stewardship of land and animals can be stressful and labor-intensive. Motivation to continue these customs may be enhanced by identification with cowboys of popular American media, enhanced by physical immersion in a similar setting. Optimal agricultural practices have been well researched; however, anthropology provides a useful lens to examine customs and practices of Florida’s cattle ranchers. Anthropologists have long been concerned with the dynamic relationship between human culture and the environment, examining how the physical landscape and ecological niches shape and are shaped by those who inhabit them. As globalized trade markets, technology, and economies expand, influencing agricultural practices and destroying natural habitats, diachronic studies of changing environments, economic and sociocultural influences in geographically bounded locales can be helpful in understanding this process. iv However, a key consideration is the fact that culture is not static, but ever changing, thus the most important aspects of tradition and heritage that we choose to retain and reinvent may provide the most telling insight into any society

This is a piece of work, which the main objective was the investigation of a “parafolclórica” dance. It was called “Marajó Cowboys Dancing”. “Parafolclóricos” groups from Marajó Island and Belém City, state of Pará, perform it. As we tried to make a study of its fantastic elements we investigated their garments, clothing requisites, music, choreography, the tap dance with their clogs also the movement of the gallop and the gesture of the cow’s lacing. For that reason the “parafolclórico” group – The Baioaras – was analysed. This group has this dance in its repertory of shows. In the Marajó Cowboys Dancing, the dancers performed some movements that pointed out the gestures of the “marajoara” cowboys. Making us go back to a countryman image. This visual was formed using choreography. In order to get information we had to get into the country people culture of the “marajoara” cowboy, considering that some of their aspects were present in this dance. We tried to increase the speech about the “parafolclóricos” groups organization process in the state of Pará. This work made possible the registration of “The Marajó Cowboys Dancing” as well as the contribution for the enlargement of new knowledge in the Scenic Arts area.

Egan, Ferol 01 January 1950 (has links)
Therefore, it is the main purpose of this thesis to arrive at some conclusions in regard to one aspect of cowboy fiction - the cowboy novel. In the main, this study will attempt to place the cowboy novel in its proper position in American literature, While doing this, it will try to show that there are two distinct schools of cowboy novels - the romantic and the realistic; and that of these two schools, the realistic tends to produce novels of a higher literary quality.

Cattle Capitalists: The XIT Empire in Texas and Montana

Miller, Michael M. 12 1900 (has links)
The Texas Constitution of 1876 set aside three million acres of Texas public land in exchange for construction of the monumental red granite Capitol that continues to house Texas state government today. The Capitol project and the land went to an Illinois syndicate led by men influential in business and politics. Austin's statehouse is a recognizable symbol of Texas around the world. So too, the massive Panhandle tract given in exchange -- what became the "fabulous" XIT Ranch -- has come to, for many, symbolize Texas and its role in the nineteenth century cattle boom. After finding sales prospects for the land, known as the Capitol Reservation, weak at the time, backed by British capital, the Illinois group, often called the Capitol Syndicate, turned their efforts to cattle ranching to satisfy investors until demand for the land increased. The operation included a satellite ranch in Montana to which two-year-old steers from Texas were sent for fattening, often "over the trail" on a route increasingly blocked by people and settlement. Rather than a study focused on ranching operations on the ground -- the roundups, the cattle drives, the cowboys -- this instead uncovers the business and political side of the Syndicate's ranching operation, headquartered in Chicago. The operation of the XIT Ranch looked more like other Gilded Age businesses employing armies of clerks, bookkeepers, and secretaries instead of how great western ranches have been portrayed for years in popular literature and media. The XIT Ranch existed from 1885 to 1912, yet from Texas to Montana the operation left a deep imprint on community culture and historical memory.
