Utredning och gestaltningsförslag för kulturkvarteret i Kalmar / Survey and design proposition of the culture district in KalmarTordhall, Frida, Ålund, Pontus January 2016 (has links)

Previous issue date: 2015-02-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This thesis addresses some dimensions about the creation of the Sao Paulo Cultural Center, since it's idealization as the central library of the state capital, in the second half of the 1970, to a transformation of their original design to house a multidisciplinary cultural institution, opened in 1982 on land adjacent to the subway line, between Avenida 23 de Maio and Rua Vergueiro. Aims to highlight the importance of public spaces as places where culture converges part of relations between citizens and public administration, where they breed unrest within the city because of social inequality and cultural, color, gender and sexuality differences. In this work, the Cultural Center is considered in relation to the city that crosses and their influence on city life. This research sought to recognize the agents involved with the planning of the "new cultural institution", identifying their references and contributions, taking as its starting point the need to expand the Mário de Andrade Library, due to the overcrowding of books in his tower and insufficient space to meet readers and researchers at that institution. It was surveyed the socio-cultural landscape transformations of the city of Sao Paulo in the 1970s and 1980s, the emergence of demands of the population in relation to culture and leisure as well as the development of public policies for culture in this period. Focusing research on the concept of cultural center and its popularity since the late 1970s, this research seeks to contribute to reflection on the culture of public spaces as places of negotiation, of which participated managers related to municipal administration, artists, agencies culture and diverse publics, whose values, identities and interests influence the constitution and functioning of these institutions, much beyond the meanings of art-‐ spectator / Esta tese aborda algumas dimensões do processo de criação do Centro Cultural São
adaptação do edifício para seu funcionamento como Centro Cultural São Paulo;

Using Archetypal Metaphor to Analyze Cultural Landscape: A Chlilean Case StudyBourette, Cari 01 May 2009 (has links)
In our increasingly complex and interactive world, it becomes ever more difficult to isolate and map the cultural identity of any given region, as bounded and contained cultural places have become a rare occurrence. To further complicate the matter, perspectives, loyalties, and identities shift with time, and appear to shift with circumstance. While cultural conflict per se was not the subject of this study, the ability to quantify differing cultural profiles in one location relative to another may be the beginning of the development of a tool for assessing degrees of difference in neighboring regions, and thus diagnosing the potential for conflict escalation. The Compass System, a holistic model that uses eight archetypal categories to observe and evaluate complex systems, was used for this study. In this exploratory study, 33 restaurants in 5 cities in Chile were rated in these eight categories as perceived by a team of outsider observers. The predominant qualities of each city sampled, determined solely from the sampling of its restaurants, did match, in a general sense, qualities of the city that were otherwise observable. This matching indicates that a tool such as the Compass System can be used to gather a collective regional profile from small sampling, such as an area’s restaurants. Potential uses for further research and development could include conflict management and assessing risk for social instability or escalation of violence.

Planning for a learning society : Minnestrista Cultural Center and Oakhurst Gardens in Ball State University's professional development schools networkWebber, Mary M. January 2000 (has links)
In a perfect learning society, the whole community-from corporate institutions to family units-recognizes and acts upon its responsibility to nurture and create a total learning environment that should extend throughout the lifetime of each member (Senesh, 1991). In contrast, many efforts to reform education in America focus on only one locus of education, the pre/K- 12 school Fortunately, however, some current reforms are broadening their scope. One such example is found in Ball State University's Professional Development Schools Network, which has enlarged the focus of educational renewal by including a museum as one of its official network sites. This two-part museum, Minnetrista Cultural Center and Oakhurst Gardens, brings community partnership to the focus, incrementally enlarging educational environments and experiences beyond the school classroom and toward the ideals of a learning society. The purpose of this study was to describe and understand more fully the conception, planning, and initial implementation stages of this atypical Professional Development Schools (PDS) site, Minnetrista Cultural Center and Oakhurst Gardens. This case study drew from and contributes to the literature in three areas: (a) professional development schools, (b) community education and learning societies, and (c) program planning. Data collection consisted of 23 separate interviews with 12 participants, multiple observations, and extensive document review. Data were then processed through constant comparative analysis. Findings describe more fully this particular case, detailing the conception, planning, and initial implementation of the museum's partnership with the traditional schools (university and pre/K-12) in its community.Three conclusions were derived from the major findings. First, in the conception and planning phases, relationships among individuals were of great consequence in creating and developing Minnetrista Cultural Center and Oakhurst Gardens as a PDS site. Second, in the initial implementation phase of the museum's PDS program, the museum staff struggled to define and communicate the museum's role as a PDS site. Third, these insights, among others, have implications for PDS networks and potential non-traditional PDS sites, museums interested in their educational role, and those interested in nurturing a learning society. / Department of Educational Leadership

A Research On The Representation Of Turkish National Identity: Buildings AbroadZelef, Mustafa Haluk 01 January 2004 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis is the result of an attempt to record, classify and develop an
understanding of the motivations and dynamics in the design and realization of the
buildings that explicitly or implicitly represent the Turkish identity abroad. In the
meantime it is aimed to reflect on and identify the function of architecture and
buildings in the formulation and representation of national identity. Besides the
analysis of the meanings assigned to the architectural forms, one underlying
intention was to clarify how different aspects of architecture and building processes
could play roles in the construction and representation of national identity within
the context of the embassies, monuments, exhibition pavilions and centers for
cultural and religious purposes.
During the analysis of these architectural works, basic mechanisms of the concept
of identity and its repercussions in relation to physical milieus -i.e. its
comparative nature, its reception by the others- are tried to be elaborated. Cases
other than the Turkish case are referred to when necessary. Viewpoints of variety
of actors in the realization of these works -i.e. architects, diplomats, statesmen and
contractors- are analyzed to elucidate the similarities and differences of
approaches.
iv
Besides the role of international relations, the dominant social, political and
economic characteristics in different historical periods of Turkey and their
implications on the buildings abroad are exposed by this study. Reactions of the
architectural discourse in Turkey to those characteristics concerning the national
identity, i.e. foreign architects, globalization, and promotion of architects by the
state, are elaborated. While some themes are perennial at the discursive and formal
level, variations of attitudes regarding the host context are observed in the study.
