The development of wireless infrastructure standards

This thesis treats the development of wirelessinfrastructure standards resulting from co-operative research,development and standardisation efforts. It strives to identifykey influences on this development process, and toconceptualise the process itself. With this as a basis, it goeson to analyse potential implications for companies in thewireless industry, and for the role of co-operatively developedstandards in this field. The focus of the thesis is on thecreation of standards through development efforts, rather thanthe selection of standards in official forums, or by themarket. Two deep empirical studies provide the foundation of thethesis. The first one deals with the development of the DigitalEnhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) standard. DECT isan open, de jure standard that was designed by a number oftelecommunications manufacturers. The standard was formallyapproved by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute(ETSI) in 1992. The second study treats the development ofThird Generation (3G) mobile infrastructure standards, withspecial focus on the radio interface standards such as WidebandCode Division Multiple Access (WCDMA). The development of thefamily of 3G standards today known as International MobileTelecommunications 2000 (IMT-2000) began more than 15 yearsago, and the first version of formally adopted air interfacestandards was released in 2000 by the Third GenerationPartnership Project (3GPP). The research and development goinginto the specification of the standards has involved all majorplayers in the wireless industry. The two studies have involved numerous interviews withindustry professionals, academics, regulators, and others. Inaddition, a multitude of technical reports and articles,meeting documents, press releases, etc., have been analysed toprovide good documentation of the development processes. Theempirical studies have also been complemented with extensiveliterature studies into the areas of technical development andstandardisation. Apart from two "thick descriptions" of importantdevelopments in the wireless industry, the main result of thethesis is a conceptual framework for how wirelessinfrastructure standards are developed. The frameworkdemonstrates that the development is influenced by thepre-history of the standard in terms of existing systems, aswell as research and development that had been pursued inrelevant fields. Furthermore it shows that preconceptions ofmarket needs and user behaviour are key aspects of the designof the standard. During the development process technologicalcontroversies tend to appear as a manifestation of differentcompetitive intentions among the involved players. In theresolution of these controversies, the stage is set for futurecompetition between suppliers of products adhering to thestandard. The pre-history of a standard, as well as the marketpreconceptions, originate in the semi-independent processes oftechnological development, and market diffusion, respectively.When the time frame of the conceptual framework is expanded,generations of standards following upon each other can beidentified. Each new generation incorporates new developments,and improved functionality and performance, but also builds onexisting solutions. The technical standards, such as DECT orWCDMA, act as wasp-like waists between the technologicaldevelopment and the market diffusion processes. The thesis shows that wireless infrastructure standards to agreat extent are created through technical development efforts.The processes also involve political, competitive, andregulatory deliberations, but technical content often definesthe form even for these debates. This points to the importanceof considering standards-setting in terms of a developmentprocess rather than as a set of formal decisions made by astandards body. A consequence of this is that companiesdesiring to influence the design of a particular standardshould strive to be in the forefront of research anddevelopment related to that standardisation effort. This is thekey to leading the development of new wireless infrastructurestandards. Study of continuous-phase four-state modulation for cordless telecommunications. Assessment by simulation of CP-QFSK as an alternative modulation scheme for TDMA digital cordless telecommunications systems operating in indoor applications

One of the major driving elements behind the explosive boom in wireless revolution is the advances in the field of modulation which plays a fundamental role in any communication system, and especially in cellular radio systems. Hence, the elaborate choice of an efficient modulation scheme is of paramount importance in the design and employment of any communications system. Work presented in this thesis is an investigation (study) of the feasibility of whether multilevel FSK modulation scheme would provide a viable alternative modem that can be employed in TDMA cordless communications systems. In the thesis the design and performance analysis of a non-coherent multi-level modem that offers a great deal of bandwidth efficiency and hardware simplicity is studied in detail. Simulation results demonstrate that 2RC pre-modulation filter pulse shaping with a modulation index of 0.3, and pre-detection filter normalized equivalent noise bandwidth of 1.5 are optimum system parameter values. Results reported in chapter 5 signify that an adjacent channel rejection factor of around 40 dB has been achieved at channel spacing of 1.5 times the symbol rate while the DECT system standards stipulated a much lower rejection limit criterion (25-30dB), implying that CP-QFSK modulation out-performs the conventional GMSK as it causes significantly less ACI, thus it is more spectrally efficient in a multi-channel system. However, measured system performance in terms of BER indicates that this system does not coexist well with other interferers as at delay spreads between 100ns to 200ns, which are commonly encountered in such indoor environment, a severe degradation in system performance apparently caused by multi-path fading has been noticed, and there exists a noise floor of about 40 dB, i.e. high irreducible error rate of less than 5.10-3. ESD Protected SiGe HBT RFIC Power Amplifiers

Over the last few decades, the susceptibility of integrated circuits to electrostatic discharge (ESD) induced damages has justified the use of dedicated on-chip protection circuits. Design of robust protection circuits remains a challenging task because ESD failure mechanisms have become more acute as device dimensions continue to shrink. A lack of understanding of the ESD phenomena coupled with the increased sensitivity of smaller devices and time-to-market demands has led to a trial-and-error approach to ESD-protected circuit design. Improved analysis capabilities and a systematic design approach are essential to accomplish the challenging task of providing adequate protection to core circuit(s). The design of ESD protection circuitry for RFIC's has been relatively slow to evolve, compared to their digital counterparts, and is now emerging as a new design challenge in RF and high-speed mixed-signal IC development. Sub-circuits which are not embedded in a single System-on-Chip (SOC), such as RF Power amplifiers (PAs), are of particular concern as they are more susceptible to the various ESD events. This thesis presents the development of integrated ESD protection circuitry for two RFIC Power Amplifier designs. A prototype PA for 2.4 GHz Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) applications was redesigned to provide protection to the RF input and the PA Control pins. A relatively new technique known as the L-C tank approach was used to protect the RFinput while a standard diode ring approach was used to protect the control line. The protection techniques studied were subsequently extended to a completely protected three-stage PA targeting 1.9 GHz Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telephone (DECT) applications. An on-chip shunt-L-series-C input matching network was used to provide ESD protection to the input pin of the DECT PA. A much more area efficient (as compared to the diode ring technique) Zener diode approach was used to protect the control and signal lines. The PA's RF performance was virtually unaffected by the addition of the protection circuits. Both PAs were designed in a commercially available 0.5 ìm SiGe-HBT process. The partially protected WLAN PA was fabricated and packaged in a 3mm x 3mm Fine Pitch Quad Flat Package FQFP-N 12 Lead package and had a measured ESD protection rating of ± 1kV standard Human Body Model (HBM) ESD test. The simulated DECT PA demonstrated +1.5kV/-4kV HBM performance. / Master of Science

One area of research and development for The Swedish National Laboratory of Time and Frequency is time synchronization and how UTC(SP) can be distributed in Sweden. Dissemination of time information by SP is in Sweden mainly performed via Internet using the Network Time Protocol (NTP) as well as via a modem dial up service and a speaking clock (Fröken Ur). In addition to these services, time information from the Global Positioning System (GPS) and from the long-wave transmitter DCF77 in Germany, is also available in Sweden. </p><p>This master’s thesis considers how different available commercial communication systems could be used for multicast time distribution. DECT, Bluetooth, Mobile Telecommunication and Radio Broadcasting are different techniques that are investigated. One application of Radio Broadcasting, DARC, was found to be interesting for a more detailed study. A theoretical description of how DARC could be used for national time distribution is accomplished and a practical implementation of a test system is developed to evaluate the possibilities to use DARC for multicast time distribution. </p><p>The tests of DARC and the radio broadcast system showed that these could be interesting techniques to distribute time with an accuracy of a couple of milliseconds. This quality level is not obtained today but would be possible with some alterations of the system.</p>

Segmentation du rein fonctionnel à partir de CTdouble énergie injectés

Les néphropaties (maladie des tissus rénaux) postradiques constituent l'un des facteurs limitants pour l'élaboration des plans de traitement lors des radiothérapies abdominales. Le processus actuel, qui consiste à évaluer la fonctionnalité relative des reins grâce à une scintigraphie gamma deux dimensions, ne permet pas d'identifier les portions fonctionnelles qui pourraient être évitées lors de l' élaboration des plans de traitement. Une méthode permettant de cartographier la fonctionnalité rénale en trois dimensions et d'extraire un contour fonctionnel utilisable lors de la planification a été développée à partir de CT double énergie injectés à l'iode. La concentration en produit de contraste est considérée reliée à la fonctionnalité rénale. La technique utilisée repose sur la décomposition à trois matériaux permettant de reconstruire des images en concentration d'iode. Un algorithme de segmentation semi-automatisé basé sur la déformation hiérarchique et anamorphique de surfaces permet ensuite d'extraire le contour fonctionnel des reins. Les premiers résultats obtenus avec des images patient démontrent qu'une utilisation en clinique est envisageable et pourra être bénéfique. / Post-radic nephroaties (illness of kidney tissues) are one of the limitating factors when realising treatment planning for abdominal radiotherapies. The present process which consists in evaluating the Differential Kidney Function with a two-dimensional gamma scintigraphy, does not allow any identification of functional parts that could be taken into account during planification. The method presented in this document gives a three dimensional functional map of the kidney and a functional contour usable in planification, using double energy CT images with iodine contrast agent.The concentration in contrast agent is assumed to be related to kidney function. The proposed method is based on a three-materials decomposition allowing to reconstruct images of iodine concentration. The functionnal contour is extracted through a semi-automatic algorithm based on hierarchic and anamorphic surface deformation. First results obtained with patient images demonstrate the possibility of several future clinical applications.

Dual Energy CT as a Foundation for Proton Therapy Treatmen Planning - A pilot study

The treatment plan for radiation therapy with protons is based on images from a computed tomography (CT) scanner. This is problematic since the photons in the x-ray beam from the CT scanner and the protons are affected differently by the tissue in the patient, which introduce an uncertainty in the track length of the protons. The hypothesis of this study is that a new generation of CT scanners (DECT), with the capacity to simultaneously scan the patient with two photon spectra of different mean energy, will improve the tissue characterisation and which in turn reduce the uncertainty in the track length of the protons. In this study, the accuracy and precision of a DECT-based method from the literature is compared to the conventional calibration method used today at the University clinics in Sweden to relate the attenuation of the photon beam to the slowing down of the protons. The methods are tested on CT images of a phantom, a plastic body containing tissue equivalent plastic inserts of known elemental composition. The results turned out to be inconclusive as there were large uncertainties in the measurements. The method has potential, as has been shown in the literature, but there are many questions that need to be answered before the method is ready to be implemented at the clinic. / En proton som färdas genom människokroppen deponerar endast en liten del av sin energi längs vägen innan den plötsligt deponerar allt i slutet på dess bana. Hur lång dess bana är beror på protonens ursprungliga energi och den atomära sammansättningen hos vävnaden den passerar igenom. Om sammansättningen är känd går det genom att justera den initiala energin bestämma banlängden. Denna egenskap gör protonen väldigt attraktiv för strålterpi, då det innbär möjligheten att behandla med hög precision samt bespara frisk vävnad onödig dos. Strålterapi med protoner planeras idag med bilder från en skiktröntgen (CT) som underlag. Ett problem med det är att röntgenstrålarna från CT-skannern påverkas annorlunda än protonerna av vävnaden, vilket introducerar en osäkerhet i protonernas banlängd. Hypotesen i denna studie är att en ny generation av CT-scanner (DECT), med möjlighet att simultant skanna patienten med två fotonspektran av olika medelenergi, på ett bättre sätt ska kunna bestämma den atomära sammansättningen för vävnaden och därmed reducera osäkerheten i protonernas banlängd. Noggrannhet och precision för en DECT-baserad metod från litteraturen jämförs med den SECT-baserade kalibreringsmetoden, som idag används på Universitetssjukhusen i Sverige för att relatera fotonstrålens dämpning i vävnaden till protonernas inbromsning. Metoderna testas på CT bilder av ett fantom, en plastkropp innehållandes olika cylindrar av vävnadsekvivalent plast med känd atomär sammansättning. Resultatet av den här studien är inte starkt nog för att bevisa hypotesen för studien. Det insamlade bildmaterialet innehåller höga brusnivåer jämfört med de som rapporteras i literaturen. Brusnivåer är så höga att det mesta av resultatet inte kan anses som statistiskt signifikant. Det är dessutom svårt att göra en direkt jämförelse av prestanda med befintlig teori för vävnadskaraktärisering, då bildmaterialet från de CT skanners som jämfördes är av olika typer. De resultat som publicerats i litteraturen visar att den DECT-baserade metoden har potential, men den här studien gör tydligt att det fortfarande finns frågor som måste besvaras innan metoden är redo att implementeras kliniskt.

Practical implementation and exploration of dual energy computed tomography methods for Hounsfield units to stopping power ratio conversion

The purpose of this project was to explore the performance of methods for estimating stopping power ratio (SPR) from Hounsfield units (HU) using dual energy CT scans, rather than the standard single energy CT scans, with the aim of finding a method which could outperform the current single energy stoichiometric method. Such a method could reduce the margin currently added to the target volume during treatment which is defined as 3.5 % of the range to the target volume + 1 mm . Three such methods, by Taasti, Zhu, and, Lalonde and Bouchard, were chosen and implemented in MATLAB. A phantom containing 10 tissue-like inserts was scanned and used as a basis for the SPR estimation. To investigate the variation of the SPR from day-to-day the phantom was scanned once a day for 12 days. The resulting SPR of all methods, including the stoichiometric method, were compared with theoretical SPR values which were calculated using known elemental weight fractions of the inserts and mean excitation energies from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). It was found that the best performing method was the Taasti method which had, at best, an average percentage difference from the theoretical values of only 2.5 %. The Zhu method had, at best, 4.8 % and Lalonde-Bouchard 15.6% including bone tissue or 6.3 % excluding bone. The best average percentage difference of the stoichiometric method was 3.1 %. As the Taasti method was the best performing method and shows much promise, future work should focus on further improving its performance by testing more scanning protocols and kernels to find the ones yielding the best performance. This should then be supplemented with testing different pairs of energies for the dual energy scans. The fact that the Zhu and Lalonde-Bouchard method performed poorly could indicate problems with the implementation of those methods in this project. Investigating and solving those problems is also an important goal for future projects. Lastly the Lalonde-Bouchard method should be tested with more than two energy spectra.
