[en] EVENTS, FACTS, AND STATES OF AFFAIRS: FROM LOGIC ONTOLOGY TO LANGUAGE USE / [pt] EVENTOS, FATOS E ESTADOS DE COISAS: DESDE A ONTOLOGIA LÓGICA À LINGUAGEM EM USO

ANA CLARA OLIVERA POLAKOF 22 September 2017 (has links)
[en] This thesis proposes an ontological delimitation between events, facts and states of affairs. It does so from a Platonist/realist perspective. It also relates the logic ontology to language use through the analysis of reference to these entities. Events, facts, and states of affairs have been present in the discussion of analytical philosophy from the times of Frege. However, the discussion still continues, and nothing has been defined. Events have been reduced to objects, facts and states of affairs. Facts have been reduced to states of affairs and propositions. States of affairs and facts have been considered as the same entity by some authors, and so forth. These three entities have been associated to language since the times of Russell (1918). Facts were related to true statements, and were understood as entities to which those statements pointed. Events were related to action sentences. According to Davidson (1981a), we have action sentences because there are events in the world. Though this thesis relates ontology to language, it defines ontology independent of language use. That is, ontology is defined without taking language use into account. It proposes that the difference between events, facts, and states of affairs is that the first are concrete, and the last abstract. Among other characteristics. Once we define the ontology, we relate it to language use through reference. We analyze whether it s possible to refer to events, facts, and states of affairs, because we understand that it is through reference that we may establish the relationship between ontology and linguistics.

“I never thought about those rules in all my languages” : A comparative study of teaching the English articles in the multilingual classroom from a monolingual or a multilingual approach

Zhang, Zhiyin January 2018 (has links)
This study is conducted to compare the effect of practicing a multilingual approach to a monolingual approach in teaching the English article system for students with multilingual backgrounds. Through a structured experiment in light of sociolinguistic and second language acquisition theories, two different discourses (complexes of signs and practices that organize social existence and social reproduction) structuring different legitimate languages are implemented in each respective approach. In the multilingual approach, all languages in the participants’ language repertoire are legitimized and encouraged, while only Standard English is legitimized in the monolingual approach. Three groups of informants participated in the experiment. Two groups of young informants with low English proficiency, and one group of adult informants with intermediate English proficiency participated in the experiment. The majority of the participants have more than two languages in their language repertoires. The multilingual approach was adopted in one of the young groups and the adult group. The study shows that all informants improved in their use of the English article system, regardless of the different approaches. The informants with lower English proficiency level and with a strongest [-ART] language (language with no articles) improved 40.9% in the multilingual approach, which is almost twice as much as the improvement in the monolingual approach. However, the young informants in both groups tend to be confused about the use of the indefinite article a/an after the exercise. The improvements tend to remain in a longer period of time with the multilingual approach in both the adult group and the young group. In addition, the participants tend to show higher rates of concentration, positive emotional feelings and engagement during and after the multilingual approach. The results suggest that it is beneficial to deploy the multilingual approach, through intentional structuring of the legitimized languages in classroom.

Approche par une méthode d’homogénéisation du comportement des ouvrages en sols renforcés par colonnes ou tranchées / A homogenization approach for assessing the behavior of soil structures reinforced by columns or trenches

Gueguin, Maxime 09 July 2014 (has links)
This work takes place in the context of soil reinforcement techniques, aimed at improving the mechanical performances of poor quality grounds. Among these techniques, the use of soft inclusions taking the form of columns or cross trenches has known important developments. Even if the aspects relative to their construction process are presently well mastered, the design methods of such reinforced soil structures still remain to be greatly improved. The present work advocates the use of the homogenization method for assessing the global behavior of reinforced soil structures, both in the context of linear elasticity (stiffness properties) and in the framework of yield design (strength properties). Taking into account the geometrical periodicity of the various reinforcement configurations, we thus determine the behavior of the reinforced soils first locally and then at the global scale. To assess the strength capacities of reinforced soil structures, the static and kinematic approaches of the yield design theory are performed analytically or numerically depending on the kind of reinforcing material which is used. Adopting innovative numerical formulations dedicated to this theory, we can notably evaluate the macroscopic strength domains of column as well as cross trench reinforced soils which can then be introduced in the yield design of reinforced soil structures. Two illustrative applications of this procedure are performed relating to the bearing capacity problem of a reinforced soil shallow foundation on the one hand, the stability analysis of an embankment on the other hand

Roux, Pierre 18 December 2013 (has links)
Critical Systems such as flight commands may have disastrous results in case of failure. Hence the interest of both the industrial and theacademic communities in formal methods able to more or less automatically deliver mathematical proof of correctness. Among them, this thesis will particularly focus on abstract interpretation, an efficient method to automatically generate proofs of numerical properties which are essential in our context. It is well known from control theorists that linear controllers are stable if and only if they admit a quadratic invariant (geometrically speaking, an ellipsoid). They call these invariants quadratic Lyapunov functions and a first part offers to automatically compute such invariants for controllers given as a pair of matrices. This is done using semi-definite programming optimization tools. It is worth noting that floating point aspects are taken care of, whether they affectcomputations performed by the analyzed program or by the tools used for the analysis. However, the actual goal is to analyze programs implementing controllers (and not pairs of matrices), potentially including resets or saturations, hence not purely linears. The policy iteration technique is a recently developed static analysis techniques well suited to that purpose. However, it does not marry very easily with the classic abstract interpretation paradigm. The next part tries to offer a nice interface between the two worlds. Finally, the last part is a more prospective work on the use of polynomial global optimization based on Bernstein polynomials to compute polynomial invariants on polynomials systems.

Analysis and control of parabolic partial differential equations with application to tokamaks using sum-of-squares polynomials / Analyse et contrôle des équations aux dérivées partielles parabolique aide de polynômes somme des carrés avec une application sur les tokamaks

Gahlawat, Aditya 28 October 2015 (has links)
In this work we address the problems of stability analysis and controller synthesis for one dimensional linear parabolic Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). To achieve the tasks of stability analysis and controller synthesis we develop methodologies akin to the Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) framework for Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs). We develop a method for parabolic PDEs wherein we test the feasibility of certain LMIs using SDP to construct quadratic Lyapunov functions and controllers. The core of our approach is the construction of quadratic Lyapunov functions parametrized by positive definite operators on infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. Unlike positive matrices, there is no single method of parametrizing the set of all positive operators on a Hilbert space. Of course, we can always parametrize a subset of positive operators, using, for example, positive scalars. However, we must ensure that the parametrization of positive operators should not be conservative. Our contribution is constructing a parametrization which has only a small amount of conservatism as indicated by our numerical results. We use Sum-of-Squares (SOS) polynomials to parametrize the set of positive, linear and bounded operators on Hilbert spaces. As the name indicates, an SOS polynomial is one which can be represented as a sum of squared polynomials. The most important property of an SOS polynomial is that it can be represented using a positive (semi)-definite matrix. This implies that even though the problem of polynomial (semi)-positivity is NP-hard, the problem of checking if polynomial is SOS (and hence (semi)-positive) can be solved using SDP. Therefore, we aim to construct quadratic Lyapunov functions parametrized by positive operators. These positive operators are in turn parametrized by SOS polynomials. This parametrization using SOS allows us to cast the feasibility problem for the existence of a quadratic Lyapunov function as the feasibility problem of LMIs. The feasibility problem of LMIs can then be addressed using SDP. In the first part of the thesis we consider stability analysis and boundary controller synthesis for a large class of parabolic PDEs. The PDEs have spatially distributed coefficients. Such PDEs are used to model processes of diffusion, convection and reaction of physical quantities in anisotropic media. We consider boundary controller synthesis for both the state feedback case and the output feedback case (using and observer design). IN the second part of thesis we design distributed controllers for the regulation of poloidal magnetic flux in a tokamak (a thermonuclear fusion devise). First, we design the controllers to regulate the magnetic field line pitch (the safety factor). The regulation of the safety factor profile is important to suppress the magnetohydrodynamic instabilities in a tokamak. Then, we design controllers to maximize the internally generated bootstrap current density. An increased proportion of bootstrap current would lead to a reduction in the external energy requirements for the operation of a tokamak.

Núcleos positivos definidos em espaços 2-homogêneos / Positive definite kernels on two-point homogeneous spaces

Victor Simões Barbosa 26 July 2016 (has links)
In this work we analyze the strict positive definiteness of continuous kernels on compact two-point homogeneous spaces Md. R. Gangolli (1967) presented a complete characterization for continuous, isotropic and positive definite kernels on Md: the isotropic part of the kernel is a uniformly convergent Fourier series of certain Jacobi polynomials associated to Md, with nonnegative coefficients. One of the contributions of our work is a characterization for the strict positive definiteness of such kernels, completing that one presented by Chen et al. (2003) in the case Md is the unit sphere of dimension at least 2. Another contribuition of this work is an extension of Gangolli\'s result for kernels on a product of compact two-point homogeneous spaces, and the subsequent characterization of strict positive definiteness in this same context. Finally, the last contribution in this work involves the analysis of the differentiability of the isotropic part of a continuous, isotropic and positive definite kernel on Md and the applicability of such analysis in results involving the strict positive definiteness.

Positive definite functions for interpolation on complex spheres.

Ana Paula Peron 07 February 2001 (has links)
We characterize positive definite functions on complex spheres, generalizing a famous result due to I. J. Schoenberg ([41]). As in the real case, we study the so-called strictly positive definite functions. They can be used to perform interpolation of scattered data on those spheres. We present (separated) necessary and sufficient conditions for a positive definite function to be strictly positive definite of a certain order. These conditions produce a final characterization for those positive definite functions which are strictly positive definite of all orders, on almost all spheres. Strictly positive definite functions of order 2 are identified. Finally, we study a connection between strictly positive definite functions on real spheres and strictly positive definite functions on complex spheres.

Operadores integrais positivos e espaços de Hilbert de reprodução / Positive integral operators and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces

José Claudinei Ferreira 27 July 2010 (has links)
In this work we study theoretical properties of positive integral operators on \'L POT. 2\'(X; u), in the case when X is a topological space, either locally compact or first countable, and u is a strictly positive measure. The analysis is directed to spectral properties of the operator which are related to some extensions of Mercer\'s Theorem and to the study of the reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces involved. As applications, we deduce decay rates for the eigenvalues of the operators in a special but relevant case. We also consider smoothness properties for functions in the reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces when X is a subset of the Euclidean space and u is the Lebesgue measure of the space

Universalidade e ortogonalidade em espaços de Hilbert de reprodução / Universality and orthogonality in reproducing Kernel Hilbert spaces

Victor Simões Barbosa 19 February 2013 (has links)
Tanto a universalidade quanto a ortogonalidade pressupõem a continuidade do núcleo. A ortogonalidade a partir de suportes disjuntos almeja então a ortogonalidade de quaisquer duas funções do espaço de Hilbert de reprodução de K quando seus suportes não se intersectam / We analyze the role of feature maps of a positive denite kernel K acting on a Hausdorff topological space E in two specific properties: the universality of K and the orthogonality in the reproducing kernel Hilbert space of K from disjoint supports. Feature maps always exist but may not be unique. A feature map may be interpreted as a kernel based procedure that maps the data from the original input space E into a potentially higher dimensional \"feature space\" in which linear methods may then be used. Both properties, universality and orthogonality from disjoint supports, make sense under continuity of the kernel. Universality of K is equivalent to the fundamentality of {K(. ; y) : y \'IT BELONGS\' X} in the space of all continuous functions on X, with the topology of uniform convergence, for all nonempty compact subsets X of E. One of the main results in this work is a characterization of the universality of K from a similar concept for the feature map. Orthogonality from disjoint supports seeks the orthogonality of any two functions in the reproducing kernel Hilbert space of K when the functions have disjoint supports
