Shande Ding: An Examination of His Compositional Style and Influences from Western Composers

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: The purpose of this research is to uncover connections between Chinese composer Shande Ding and Western composers, as found in the development of Ding’s compositional style. Ding’s solo piano pieces are representative of his overall stylistic tendencies. As an innovative composer, Ding’s experiments in combining various and bold musical materials with Chinese traditional styles became the model for contemporary Chinese composers and those of the next generation. There is little research, and few recordings of Ding’s work available in the United States. Most of the research remains in China, including his biography, styles, the analyses of specific pieces, etc. To date, Yuefang Liu has contributed the only dissertation on the merging of Eastern and Western Music Cultures that mentions Shande Ding, and it cites only Ding’s early piano works. Some articles have suggested that Ding may have been influenced by western composers, but there is no actual exploration of the proposition. This paper will offer some pedagogical suggestions by dividing Ding’s solo piano works into different levels of difficulty, along with tips on performance and teaching approaches. Both the connection between piano works of Western composers and Shande Ding, and Ding’s resultant compositional style, will be explored. It is hoped that the project will expand further interest in Ding’s solo piano works. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2020

[en] SILENCE AND NOISE: AN INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC FROM A FREUDIAN AND LACANIAN PERSPECTIVE / [pt] SILÊNCIO E RUÍDO: INTRODUÇÃO A UMA ABORDAGEM DA MÚSICA A PARTIR DE FREUD E LACAN

LOURENCO ASTUA DE MORAES 13 November 2008 (has links)
[en] In music and in the psychoanalytical practice alike, silence occupies a central place. We sought, in the present work, to interrogate this silence, assuming to find in it, a possible intersection between the two fields. In music, silence appears, first of all, as that which structurally denies it, allowing it, thus, to exist. It is the emptiness that confers to sound, its form. On the other hand, silence, sometimes imposed on music itself, also appears in the fact that music raises problems associated with ethics and politics. In psychoanalysis, silence, also having a structural position, leads to the freudian invention called the drive. The drive, being a myth, is a condition to the appearance of a subject and to the possibility of the language being`s ethical choice. Jacques Lacan revisits the drive circuit of Freud and its four terms indicating that it goes around something: the a object. Object cause of anguish and desire, the a object appears under many forms in the levels of subjective development, namely, verbal, anal, phallic, scopic and vocal. With Lacan, we see that the voice is the beastly roar of the dying father, the scream of a sacrificed god who haunts the language. It`s a quiet but present voice, with effect in the Real. Being a way of silencing this voice, of stifling it, music paradoxly also propagates this object in a privileged way creating thus an emptiness which we propose, closing the circuit, to name in another way: silence.

Etude structurale et fonctionnelle des phosphates-binding proteins : Illustration avec les protéines ding et ding-like et leur implication dans l'infection /inhibition du Vih / Structural and functional study of phosphate-binding proteins : Illustration with ding and ding-like proteins and their involvment in hiv infection/inhibition

Phosphate acquisition from the extracellular environment is a key process for all living cells. In bacteria, its importation is ensured, in part, by high affinity phosphate binding proteins (PBP). During this work, we are interested to two families of PBPs named DING and DING like proteins. DING proteins are ubiquitous proteins, so named due to their highly conserved N-terminal sequence DINGGG-. Although widely represented in bacteria, these proteins were initially identified in human by virtue of their biological properties or their involvement in diseases, including in HIV-inhibition. Currently, the anti-HIV activity has been shown for two human members of the DING family, HPBP and X-DING CD4. The presence in human of such proteins raises numerous questions about their role during HIV-infection. Thus, we undertook a study to evaluate their serum concentration in HIV-infected patients. Our results shows a surprising increase of the concentration of DING proteins in this population, compared to controls. On the other hand, our work on the DING proteins family led us to be interested on the family of DING-like proteins, closely related to the DING family. Unlike DING proteins, DING-like members were identified exclusively in bacteria. In addition to their ability to bind phosphate, some DING-like members appear to have a phosphatase activity. In this work we have characterize structurally and enzymatically two members of this family isolated from Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The structural analysis of these proteins combined with activities characterization could be of a great interest in order to understand their role in phosphate acquisition in this bacterium.
