Evaluating The Impact Of Oocea S Dynamic Message Signs (dms) On Travelers Experience Using The Pre-deployment Survey

Rogers, John Hill 01 January 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate the impact of dynamic message signs (DMS) on the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA) toll road network using the Pre-Deployment DMS Survey (henceforth referred to as "pre-deployment survey"). DMS are electronic traffic signs used on roadways to give travelers information about travel times, traffic congestion, accidents, disabled vehicles, AMBER alerts, and special events. The particular DMS referred to in this study are large rectangular signs installed over the travel lanes and these are not the portable trailer mount signs. The OOCEA is currently in the process of adding several fixed DMS on their toll road network. Between January 2007 and February 2008, approximately 30 DMS are planned on their network. It is important to note that there was one DMS sign on the OOCEA network before this study started. Since most of the travelers on OOCEA toll roads are from Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties, this study is limited to these counties. This thesis documents the results of pre-deployment analysis. The instrument used to analyze the travelers' perception of DMS was a survey that utilized computer aided telephone interviews. The pre-deployment survey was conducted during early November of 2006. Questions pertaining to the acknowledgement of DMS on the OOCEA toll roads, satisfaction with travel information provided on the network, formatting of the messages, satisfaction with different types of messages, diversion questions (Revealed and Stated preferences), and classification/socioeconomic questions (such as age, education, most used toll road, and county of residence) were asked to the respondents. The results of the pre-deployment analysis showed that 54.4% of the OOCEA travelers recalled seeing DMS on the network. The respondents commonly agreed that the DMS are helpful for providing information about hazardous conditions, and that the DMS are easy to read. The majority of the travelers preferred DMS formats as a steady message for normal traffic conditions, and use of commonly recognized abbreviations such as I-Drive for International Drive. The results from the binary logit model for "satisfaction with travel information provided on OOCEA toll road network" display the significant variables that explain the likelihood of the traveler being satisfied. The results from the coefficients show that infrequent travelers are more likely to be satisfied with traveler information on OOCEA toll roads. In addition, the provision of hazard warnings, special event information, and accuracy of information on DMS are associated with higher levels of satisfaction with traveler information. The binary logit model for "Revealed Preference (RP)" diversion behavior showed that Seminole County travelers were likely to stay on the toll road, and SR 408 travelers were likely to divert off the toll road. The travelers who acknowledged DMS on the OOCEA network were also likely to divert off the toll road, but those who learned of the congestion by DMS were likely to stay on the toll road. Learning of congestion by DMS could encourage travelers to stay, since when they are on the toll roads, diversion at times could be difficult with no access to exits or little knowledge of alternate routes. But it is also possible that travelers stayed because their perception was that the toll roads are faster, especially when messages on DMS show travel times that confirm the travelers' belief. Travelers who were not satisfied with travel information on the network were more likely to divert off the toll road. The implications for implementation of these results are discussed in this thesis. DMS should be formatted as a steady message for normal traffic conditions. Commonly recognized abbreviations, such as I-Drive for International Drive, must be used for roadway identification when possible. DMS messages should be pertained to information on roadway hazards when necessary because it was found that travelers find it important to be informed on events that are related to their personal safety. Accuracy of information provided on DMS was important for traveler information satisfaction because if the travelers observe inaccurate travel times on DMS, they may not trust the validity of future messages. DMS information that led to the travelers canceling their intended stops led to a higher likelihood of them being dissatisfied with traveler information. It is important to meet the travelers' preferences and concerns for DMS.

Dehbaoui, Mourad 12 December 2013 (has links)
In an effort to combine the benefits of magnetic and electronic properties, diluted magnetic semiconductors are projected to be the basis for devices combining in their operation, both the charge and spin of electrons. Using Hall Effect magnetometer, a characterization of these materials is done by determining the magnetic orientation at low temperatures. We were also interested in molecular materials spin crossover. The magnetic sensor technology provides a path to the extension of detection techniques through the use of rapid and sensitive systems. The detection of the spin crossover nanoparticles is achieved by a planar Hall Effect sensor, made from magnetic multilayers. The work is a pioneer in the field of nano magnetic detection; it opens up new perspectives in basic research and the technological development of magnetic sensors. Improvements of the device have been completed and others are under development in order to improve sensitivity and reduce noise. The optimization should provide a novel system for detecting spin transition nanoparticles at room temperature.

Electronic correlation and magnetism in multi-band Kondo lattice model

Bryksa, Vadym 26 January 2010 (has links)
We propose a self-consistent approximate solution of the disordered Kondo-lattice model (KLM) to get the interconnected electronic and magnetic properties of ''local-moment'' systems like diluted ferromagnetic semiconductors. Aiming at $(A_{1-x}M_x)$ compounds, where magnetic (M) and non-magnetic (A) atoms are distributed randomly over a crystal lattice, we present a theory which treats the subsystems of itinerant charge carriers and localized magnetic moments in a homologous manner. The coupling between the localized moments due to the itinerant electrons (holes) is treated by a modified RKKY-theory which maps the KLM onto an effective Heisenberg model. The disordered electronic and magnetic moment systems are both treated by coherent potential approximation (CPA) methods. An extension of CPA to perform a self-consistent model calculation of the electronic and magnetic properties of diluted local-moment systems $A_{1-x}M_x$ described by ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice model ($s-f$ model), where we included disorder in the first environment shell by use of crystal field parameters between two non-magnetic, one magnetic and non-magnetic, and two magnetic atoms, respectively $\lambda^{AA},\lambda^{AM},\lambda^{MM}$, and to get the interconnected electronic and magnetic properties of systems like diluted ferromagnetic semiconductors (DMS) is proposed. We discuss in detail the dependencies of the key-terms such as the long range and oscillating effectice exchange integrals and the Curie temperature as well as the electronic and magnonic quasiparticle densities of states on the concentration $x$ of magnetic ions, the carrier concentration $n$, the exchange coupling $J$ and the crystal field parameters.

Theoretical study of dilute magnetic semiconductors : Properties of (Ga,Mn)As

Staneva, Maya January 2010 (has links)
The dilute magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As , which is the most interesting and promising material for spintronics applications, has been theoretically studied by using Density Functional Theory. First of all, calculations on GaAs were done and it was found that GaAs is a semiconductor with a direct band gap. The calculated value of the band gap is ~ 0.5eV. Secondly, the material iron was considered and it was confirmed that iron is a ferromagnetic metal with 2.2µB net magnetic moment. Then a magnetic impurity of manganese, Mn was introduced in the nonmagnetic GaAs and it became ferromagnetic with a net magnetic moment of 4µB. The origin of the ferromagnetic behaviour is discussed and also the Curie temperature TC of the material. It appeared that (Ga,Mn)As is a suitable material for DMS but TC has to be increased before (Ga,Mn)As could be used for spintronics applications and on that account some methods of increasing TC are considered at the end.

Aqueous Phase Reaction Kinetics of Organic Sulfur Compounds of Atmospheric Interest

Zhu, Lei 23 November 2004 (has links)
Dimethyl Sulfide (CH3SCH3, DMS) is the most important natural sulfur compound emitted from the ocean and its oxidation in the atmosphere has been proposed to play an important role in climate modification because some products from DMS oxidation become non-volatile and could participate in particle formation and growth processes. Although it has been demonstrated that aqueous phase reactions are potentially important for understanding DMS oxidation, the kinetics database for aqueous phase transformations is rather limited. In this work, a laser flash photolysis (LFP) ??ng path UV-visible absorption (LPA) technique was employed to investigate the kinetics of the aqueous phase reactions of four organic sulfur compounds produced from DMS oxidation, i.e., dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), dimethyl-sulfone (DMSO2), methanesulfinate (MSI) and methanesulfonate (MS), with four important aqueous phase radicals, OH, SO4 and #8722;, Cl and Cl2 and #8722;. The temperature-dependent kinetics of the OH and SO4 and #8722; reactions with DMSO, DMSO2 and MS were studied for the first time. OH is found to be the most reactive, while Cl2 and #8722; is the least reactive toward all the sulfur species studied. The less oxidized DMSO and MSI are found to be more reactive than the more oxidized DMSO2 and MS for each radical. The kinetic data have been employed in a Trajectory Ensemble Model to simulate DMS oxidation in the marine atmosphere as a means of assessing the contribution of aqueous phase reactions to the growth of particulate matter. For the first time, oxidation of organic sulfur compounds by SO4 and #8722;, Cl and Cl2 and #8722; are included in the model to simulate DMS chemistry. Our simulations suggest that aqueous phase reactions contribute >97% of MS and ~90% of NSS (Non-Seasalt Sulfate) production, and aqueous phase reactions of the organic sulfur compounds contribute 30% of total particle mass growth. When our kinetic data for the MS + OH reaction were used in the model, it was found that MS + OH could consume ~20% of MS and produce ~8% of NSS, within 3 days under typical marine atmospheric conditions.

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), activated sludge volume loading and correlation of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) conversion rate

Hsu, Han-yu 07 September 2012 (has links)
Abstract DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) has merits of a high boiling point and high solution power to most photo-resistant materials used in semiconductor and LCD (liquid crystal displayers) industries. Wastewaters originated from the industries contain hundreds of grams of DMSO per cubic mater. DMSO is easily decomposed to DMS (dimethyl sulfide) and DMSO2 (dimethyl sulfone) by microorganisms in biological reactors. Malodorous DMS has a relatively low water solubility and can easily emit into the atmosphere thus causes nuisance problems. The fraction of conversion of DMSO to DMS is possibly related to the volumetric DMSO loading (F/V) to an aerobic wastewater treatment pond. This study aimed to investigate the volumetric DMSO loading which minimize the DMS production. Sequencing batch reaction tests indicate that with F/V of less than 0.45 kg DMSO-S/m3.day, there was no DMS detected in the treating mixed liquor and the vented gas from the liquor. It was also observed that with sulfate-S of higher than 0.55 kg/m3 in the mixed liquor which corresponded to F/V of 0.55 kg DMSO-S/m3.day, a high conversion of DMSO to DMS resulted in the system failure.
