Re-discovering the design of latticed windows and doors in traditionalChinese architecture in Hong Kong

Law, Chi-yung, Andrew., 羅致勇. January 2012 (has links)
Traditional Chinese architecture is one of the major historic building types in Hong Kong. Though the documentation on traditional Chinese building structure and form is extensive, the study on the decorative components is not as abundant. The deficiency is recognized particularly in timber components due to their high vulnerability to weather and fast deterioration under natural condition. Such situation is also observed in the design of traditional Chinese timber lattices in the partition doors and windows, which are regarded as unique artistic components in the traditional Chinese architecture. The objectives of the study are set to re-discover on the design, expression and associated cultural meanings of the traditional Chinese lattices in Hong Kong and its identity in the Lingnan context. Apart from being an artistic expression with high aesthetic value, the design of the lattice patterns and features are also recognized as symbolic means for the manifestation of collective and individual aspirations and beliefs of the people. They carry the hope for fortune, peace and longevity; and the influence of traditional Chinese thinking from Confucian and Taoist can also be traced. In the traditional Lingnan architecture, Hong Kong is closely related to its context, Guangzhou style. However variations in character of the local lattice design can still be found and the identity of Hong Kong is also to be sought. A field survey on the lattice design in the graded historic Chinese architecture in Hong Kong was carried out. As there is little research reference and the sampling is limited, the objective is set to establish a procedure for the collection of data for comparative analysis. By recording the results, finding out the characters and symbolic meanings, the associated intangible cultural significance can be established. The understanding of such intangible substances will be the essence for future conservation and the conserving of authenticity will rest on the inheritance of the intangible rather than the tangible form and material. / published_or_final_version / Conservation / Master / Master of Science in Conservation

Hur skapar man en funktionell och beständig dörrmiljö? : En närmare studie av ståldörrar / How to create a functional and durable door environment? : A closer study of steel doors

Rynnes, Erik January 2015 (has links)
Today’s construction buildings contain more advanced technologies than before. The development of newer and stricter regulations to the construction industry makes the door environment more and more complex. In large construction projects the door environment is held up as a major challenge to get to in a good way. It turned out after a discussion with one project manager and a site manager at NCC, that the door environment is difficult to get right in major construction projects and it often causes many error reports in to the aftermarket after that the final inspection is completed. Interviews have been done with key figures in the building process at NCC and Akademiska hus. A study on a university building for around 3500 students and with 300 workplaces was made. There were a lot of data with fault reports to the go trough to find fault report from doors and be analyzed and statistic. The results from the data collection showed that many fault messages on the doors in was caused by the door operator. And from the interviews the content was clear that the coordination has to be good to have a functioning and a good door environment. One part that can contribute to a better door environment is to plan space for possible door operator over the door. Another part is that the construction documents which production workers are working with, is to find a way to always have the latest documents in hand.

Design of a new protective isolating side-door : a virtual model to simulate ingress and egress motion for micro-mobility vehicles

de Vos, Neil January 2016 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Industrial Design))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016. / This paper is positioned within the broader context of public transportation systems, with specific focus on the development of urban micro first and last mile mobility solutions, and what it could mean for individuals and the economy. Globally, urban problems such as traffic congestion, poor public transport integration, and carbon emissions are forcing us to rethink traditional means of transport. Large fossil-fuelled vehicles and limited public transport infrastructure characterize South Africa’s transport market. Despite the growth in car use, public transport and walking are still the predominant “lifeline” forms of mobility for the vast majority of South Africans in order to access work, schools and services. Moreover, the lack of public transport services in key economic corridors and rural areas of South Africa, the role of the metered taxi industry which is currently effectively limited to serving only the needs of the tourist market due to high charging regimes, and finally, the absence of an effective inner city transport system endorses the lack of first and last mile transportation solutions, and the integration thereof with other transport mediums. This adds to the conflict commuter’s face on a daily basis in obtaining a seamless distribution of transport services. 80% of trips in urban areas are less than 3km, placing urban micro mobility vehicles in an ideal position as a solution to transportation. This describes the investigation conducted into micro-mobility trends within South Africa to identify a key mode of transport that would comply with the stated requirements, and allow accessibility to commuters within the city and to the surrounding communities. In 2014, Mellowcabs, which are electric public transport vehicles that provide first and last mile transport services, was identified as a promising candidate within the local micro-mobility vehicle context. They were in need of a design input for their immediate next requirement, which thus describes the development of a good protective side door system that would isolate passengers in adverse weather conditions, whilst similarly affording comfort and safety features found in normal passenger vehicles. The design process is focused on creating a new side door, however, at the same time the product should be, elegant, smart, fashionable, comfortable, economical, maneuverable and safe. In addition, the virtual product lifecycle management tool, CATIA, allows the design team to get feedback in terms of physical-based data that correspond to how the door could hinder the passengers interaction while they ingress and egress the vehicle. This enables us to try various designs to perform a comparative study without building a single physical prototype.

Béla Bartók, Out of Doors: A Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of L.V. Beethoven, F. Chopin, J. Brahms, R. Schumann, G. Rochberg, S. Prokofieff, M. Ravel and Others

Kincaid, Desmond, 1931- 08 1900 (has links)
The lecture recital was given January 31, 1971. A discussion of Bartok's Out of Doors, a suite consisting of five movements entitled "With Drums and Pipes," "Barcarolla," "Musettes," "The Night's Music," and "The Chase" included biographical material, general analysis of Bartok's musical style, and specific analysis of the suite itself. The suite was then performed by memory. In addition to the lecture recital three other public recitals were performed. Two of these consisted entirely of solo literature for the piano, and the other was a vocal chamber music recital. The first solo recital was on June 7, 1970, and included works of Alfredo Casella, Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms, and Bartok. Part of the preparation included the writing of program notes of a historical and analytical nature. The other solo program, on July 5, 1971, consisted entirely of twentieth-century works by George Rochberg, Sergei Prokofieff, and Maurice Ravel. The chamber music recital was performed with a visiting soprano, Jane Paul, on February 28, 1971. Emphasis was given to German Lieder by Schumann, Joseph Marx, and Alban Berg, but Spanish songs of the Renaissance, by Juan del Encina and Fuenllana, as well as a modern English song cycle by Peter Warlock were also programmed.

Svenska Försvarets reklamfilm ”Africa” – lockande eller bara kommersiell bling-bling? : En studie inom social marketing

Rogsberg, Marie, Eriksson, Maria January 2008 (has links)

/
The commercial called ”Africa” is a social marketing campaign from the Swedish national defense. The purpose of the campaign is to attract persons to make them want to go through with military or civil duty in a foreign country. The purpose with this study is to find out what the receivers decoding of this commercial. What do the respondents think that the Swedish national defense wants to achieve with “Africa” and how would the commercial look like to attract the respondents? The respondents was chosen by a so called “snowball selection”, and the empirical study consist of nine persons, both women and men, that has attended in personal interviews. Social marketing is about how to affect a target group to change a certain behavior. But one concept within social marketing is that target groups rarely agree with each other when it comes to opinions or responses, and it is because of this that the target groups should be divided into different segment. The conclusion show that “Africa” succeeds to create emotions at the receiver, but the campaign is not enough to reach all the way to the goal, the action. From theories about social marketing, KTH (emotions, thought and action) and the Seven Doors model, a question manual is created that are used at the interviews to further analyze to get to interesting conclusions about this social marketing campaign.

Abstract: Along the elevators' history its door has passed through many development phases since its no using of the doors by the ones which could cause injuries to the user. Nowadays the models of the doors panels are safe, however they still have used traditional productive processes (welding) to make the mechanical union among the components. The objective of this work is to develop a metallic panel applying the agglutinated and riveting processes in concomitance in the union of their components and also to demonstrate the viability as an alternative of the welded panel, so that two panels were manufactured and their components had the same dimensions and geometries, differing only on the productive process. One of them their components were jointed by welding MIG and the other one was applied VHB adhesive tape and stainless steel rivets for joining of their components. The legitimation of the alternative among processes was made by using the comparative analysis of the results obtained from two different tests executed on the panels. One of them consists to apply 300N perpendicular to the panel front face, in the more vulnerable point. It is the flexure test. The other test was to submit the panels to torsion efforts, by using the load application of 500N for five minutes. The results of the tests demonstrated that the welded panel has the best rigidity and the agglutinated and riveted panel had the best performance in terms of the used tests. / Universidade Estadual de Campi / Materiais e Processos de Fabricação / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica
