Music and its Relation to Futurism, Cubism, Dadaism, and Surrealism, 1905 to 1950

Greer, Thomas H. (Thomas Henry), 1916- 01 1900 (has links)
Inasmuch as this investigator can determine, no major study has been done concerning music's relation to the "isms" selected for this discussion. The contemporary interest in the movements themselves has been so widespread that the documentation of them, in scattered accounts, is enormous. It is disappointing that these records provide little or no information about the musical aspects of the movements; the graphic and literary accounts, on the other hand, have been accorded generous treatments. Since futurism, cubism, and surrealism, in their origins, were oriented toward the visual and literary arts, it is not surprising that these two aspects would receive the greatest amount of attention. The meager attention to music and the distortion of its role in the movements, as has largely been the case, has created an artistic imbalance, This writer's efforts have been directed toward an exhaustive search for factors which have, in some way or other, linked music with these movements. Musical futurism has been the easiest to identify, although its underlying theories are not always clear, since the futurists, in explaining their theories, were not always convincing, perhaps even to themselves. This writer's main attempt has been to interpret ideas that were frequently vague and poorly explained to begin with. It will become evident to the reader, in the case of the dadaists, and to some extent the surrealists, the provocative nature of their activities was deliberately designed to create incomprehension, incoherency, and confusion.

The onyric and the photograpfy in the narratives of the disc covers, a look at the hipgnosis agency.

Grecco, José Vicente Azzi 10 May 2018 (has links)
Photography occupies a significant place in the universe of graphic design. It is believed that the English agency Hipgnosis, created by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell, has initiated the process known as fotodesign, whose purpose is to insert the photographic image as non-verbal communicator. Hipgnosis\' approach to graphic design began with photographic essays and the use of image manipulation techniques in the photographic laboratory, with black and white, color and infrared films. The agency\'s work was directly with rock and roll bands from the English and North American scene from the 1960s. This procedure enjoyed the influence that the artistic movements Dadaism, Surrealism and Pop Art presented methods on the creations of the covers of musical disks of the London scene in the 1960s, and consequently alternatives to the graphic design oto the period. This qualitative exploratory and phenomenological research aims to present the course of the pre digital photography process in graphic design as the main focus of the approach through the works realized by the designers Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson, head of the agency Hipgnosis.

Representações estéticas da metrópole no cinema de autor dos anos 1920 / Esthetics representations of the metropolis in movies of authors of the 1920 decade

Correia, Donny 27 August 2014 (has links)
The cinema is a means of mechanical reproduction of image emerged in the late nineteenth century in Europe, a time when society and culture experienced the arrival of modernity. Its presence corroborated to the crisis of pictorial art and its mechanism of apprehending reality was appropriated by artists of the vanguards of rupture, especially the Dadaists, who started using the experimental film to reflect and criticize their time. Many of the artists involved with the avant-garde turned to the production of films that focused on the metropolis and its contradictions in the life and habits of its inhabitants. This work intends to start from this point, when the avant-garde cinema becomes a tool of social and historical documentation, and seeks to observe the presence of the metropolis in films made in the early twentieth century, as well as the presence of its inhabitants, so to understand what aesthetic and ideological procedures permeate these inventive works, at a time when film shows clear differentiation between mere narration for entertainment, and art criticism and reflection. This reseach will analyze the films Rien que les heures (1926), by Alberto Cavalcanti; and Berlin, symphony of the great city (1928), by Walter Ruttmann, and will compare them with Brazilian productions São Paulo, sinfonia da metrópole (1929), by Rudolf Rex Lustig and Adalberto Kemeny; and Fragmentos da vida (1929), by José Medina. The intention is to understand their accomplishments within the social, aesthetic and poetic reality of their time, observe the presence of the figure of the flâneur as opposed to the manof- the-crowd, and draw parallels between European and Brazilian addressed movies here.

A situação construída / The constructed situation

Lima, Rodrigo Nogueira 22 May 2012 (has links)
The dissertation analyzes the history of the Situationist International (S.I.) during its existence from 1957 until 1972, emphasizing the resonances of the ideals of the vanguards of Futurism, Dadaism and Surrealism, the ideals of S.I.. The choice to make a comparative study between the novel Centopeia de Neon by Edival Lourenço and some paintings selected from the cutting edge of Dadaism and Surrealism was due to the fact that these arts present similarities and establish intertextual relations between the fields of work. As well as the emphasis attributed to works as a means of breaking with traditional art forms. The current Dadaist vanguard brings features such as: the critique of capitalism and consumption; the emphasis on the absurd and the themes and contents that deny the formal logic, with a strong pessimistic and ironic character, mainly in relation to political events. In this way, we propose a cultural and social dialogue between the two specific types of artistic manifestations Painting and Literature.
