ARSENAL 5073)

Sintes-Gianlupi, Emeline 16 December 2014 (has links)
Edition and critical study of an ARS. 5073 manuscript entitled Les quatre fils Aymon written by David AubertThe fist step was to transcribe the text stored in a manuscript from the XVth century kept in the librairy of ducs of Bourgogne (MS. ARS. 5073). We therefore dealt with 357 double sided folios. Then we established the variations from the B.N. 19174 manuscript. In order to point out the difference between the version in prose (ARS.5073) and the other in verse, which served as a basis for the « dérimage », we compared the two versions carefully and highlighted the disappearances and the additions which could be found in both documents ;Along with the texte, we inserted an index where proper nouns are listed and a lexicon. We also included a list of proverbs in the text from the manuscript. We studied the miniatures which appear at the beginning og each chapter in our basic text. The latter underline the richness of the manuscript. The introduction allowing classifying the texte as a manuscript from the library of ducs of Bourgogne also includes codicologic, paleographic and linguistic analyses.

D. H. Lawrence: Misogyny as Ideology in His Later Works of Fiction and Nonfiction

Hester, Vicki M. (Vicki Martin) 08 1900 (has links)
Critics continue to debate Lawrence's attitude toward women: Some say Lawrence is a misogynist, some say he is an egalitarian, and others say he is ambivalent toward women. If Lawrence's works are divided into two chronological periods, before and after 1918, these differences of opinions begin to dissolve. Lawrence is fair in his treatment of women in the earlier works; however, in his later works Lawrence restricts women to what he calls the sensual realm, the realm of feelings and emotions. In addition, Lawrence denounces all women who assert individuality and self-responsibility. In the later works, Lawrence's ideology restricts the role of women and presents male supremacy as the natural and necessary order for human existence.

Depiction through Evocation, Representation, and Introspection: An Examination of David Maslanka's Unaccompanied Marimba Solos

Robinson, Corey, 1990- 08 1900 (has links)
The primary purpose of this study is to provide connections between a formal motivic analysis and the programmatic content of David Maslanka's three works for unaccompanied marimba: Variations on Lost Love (1977), My Lady White (1980), and A Solemn Music (2013). A comparison of the compositional process of each of these works is proposed through terms of Maslanka's use of depiction. Depiction is the action or result of representing through drawing, painting, or other art form, in this case, music. In each work for unaccompanied marimba, Maslanka uses this process of depiction in a unique way. The depictive mediums are categorized as evocative, representative, and introspective and these distinct approaches to depiction lead to three drastically different musical works. The different methods of depicting source materials are the distinguishing characteristics that separate these three works for solo marimba. This document includes a motivic analysis and comparisons of compositional devices used in these three works. A brief overview of Maslanka's life and works as well as a listing of all of his works that feature percussion instruments are also included.

A Study of the Impact and Influence of the Recordings and Pedagogy of David Baldwin

Adams, Richard (Richard James) 08 1900 (has links)
David Baldwin has been the trumpet professor at the University of Minnesota since 1974. His most celebrated accomplishment is his recording of the Charlier 36 Etudes de Transcendantes and the Marcel Bitsch Vingt Etudes. In addition to this recording Baldwin has made recordings of etude books by Small, St. Jacome, Arban, Caffarelli, Smith, and the 32 Etudes de Perfectionnement also by Charlier. The quality of performance on all of these makes them excellent reference recordings. The back cover of the Etudes 32 de Perfectionnement reveals that the two-CD album, with a total run time of 115:35, was recorded over a span of four days. Endurance is a topic that all brass players confront. Baldwin wrote an etude book titled Lips of Steel that also contains two previously published articles on the topic of endurance. His ideas on endurance reveal a unique approach. This study analyzes the pedagogical concepts in those articles and in Lips of Steel. In addition to his recording projects, Baldwin has had many successful students. Thomas Rolfs and Lynn Erickson are both members of full-time professional orchestras. Larry Griffin, Scott Hagarty, and many others built their careers as professors of trumpet. An investigation of Baldwin's influence on his students further reveals how he approaches teaching and how his pedagogy has influenced his students who are now successful college professors.

The study of national character in the post war era : the work of Erich Fromm, David Riesman, and David Potter

Rittenberg, Adam 01 January 1988 (has links)
This thesis examines the study of national character through the work of the psychologist Erich Fromm, the sociologist David Riesman, and the historian David Potter. Above all Intend to provide a critical exegesis of the three thinkers will relate them to one another by discussing the Interconnections In their thought, beginning with Fromm's social psychological theory of character, turning to Riesman's theory of sociology and, finally, Potter's theory of American history. Each, I argue, must be studied in the context his time--above all the climate of horror and uncertainty at mid-century.

Audet, Michel 23 July 2021 (has links)
In literary translation, humour is known to raise numerous difficulties and the scholars interested in its translation most often study puns, jokes, and short texts, leaving aside the translation of humour in long texts, such as novels. The object of this study is humour in David Lodge's novel, Deaf Sentence, and in its French version, La vie en sourdine, translated by Maurice and Yvonne Couturier. The thesis has five chapters. Chapter 1 is devoted to humour narrated, lexicalised and studied. In chapter 2, I lay out the conceptual and operational frameworks of the case study and in chapter 3 I introduce David Lodge, the novel under study and the Couturier couple who created the French version. Chapter 4 focuses on the passages in the source text to which I attributed humorous effects, or which contribute to them, and Chapter 5 is dedicated to the target text, its similarities and differences with the source text and the fate of the passages to which I attributed humorous effects, or which contributed to it, in the source text. Mediagraphy and appendices follow.

Sound Imagery in "Walden" and Related Works

Maddux, Linda Darlene 12 1900 (has links)
Through careful analysis of sound in Walden with some attention to related works, this study demonstrates the three major facets of Thoreau's use of sound: first, an unusual aural sensitivity illustrated by his many varied sound images, which add concreteness and experiential immediacy; next, the depth of meaning that sound has as his metaphysical symbol in perception and expression of spiritual truth; finally, his effectiveness with such auditory devices as rhythm, alliteration, assonance, and onomatopoeia to achieve a poetic quality-. Of equal importance to Thoreau are the sounds of his writing and the sounds in his writing. Realizing the reality, depth, and texture Thoreau gives his prose through his remarkable treatment of sound increases one's appreciation of Walden as art and of Thoreau as literary artist.
