From Preference to Choice: An Empirical Analysis of Consumer Decision Making inJanuary 2015 (has links)
abstract: In this study I investigate the factors that may influence consumer preference and choice in China’s home interior decoration industry. With the fast development of information technology such as the internet in China, it becomes increasingly important to have a more precise understanding of consumer preference and choice in home interior decoration decisions so that companies in this industry can provide better services to meet customer needs. Using survey data from a sample of potential customers and a sample of existing customers of a large home interior decoration company, I find that (1) internet has become the mostly used channel by consumers to gather information about home interior decoration, (2) design style is the most influential factor in consumers’ choice of home interior decoration company, and (3) consumers are more likely to choose home interior decoration companies to provide full services when they are between 35 to 45 years old or above 55 years old, when it is the first time for them to purchase a real estate property, and when they are located in the Eastern region of China. Findings of this study can help home interior decoration companies better understand customer needs and preferences, facilitate changes in their marketing and sales strategies, and consequently strengthen their competitive advantage. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Business Administration 2015

determinants of style". which include the national striving for a
South African zeitgeist. a sense of unified spirit. The problems of
eclecticism are discussed in the light of superficial ethnic cooption.
The new craft of the Western Cape (and more specifically Cape Town)
of South Africa. is represented against the background of the old
craft of the Arts and Crafts Movement in Britain at the turn of the
century. Those old methods and ideas influenced the Cape Colony
especially when it was under British rule. This dissertation shows
that the new craft ideas and methods are synonymous with the new
ideology of South Africa. a new craft for a new South Africa.
The designers and practical work selected to be part of this research
all share a common approach in their positive attitude towards
experimenting with new techniques and using available resources to
produce quality furniture which is accessible to most consumers. The
work of four design groups: Greenspace. Metropolis. Flying Cow and
the Montebel70 Smithy are discussed in terms of the objectives of
this research which are essentially linked to the unravelling of the
determinants of style and their relation to the concept identity in
the South Africa which has succeeded the first free and fair general elections of April 1994.

The impact of contemporary exhibitions in historical buildings: Retaining significance and authenticity during adaptationSlabbert, Barend Petrus January 2015 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Design))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016. / Historical interiors hold within them significance which provides us with cultural identity,
as well as historical and aesthetic value, and their physical materials offer us a
connection to the past. These interiors and their functions often become obsolete and
need to acquire a new function that is more suited to our modern-day society. One
such change in function which was identified to be steadily on the rise in Cape Town is
the reappropriation of historical interiors into contemporary exhibition venues. It was
noted that during this process many of these historical interiors end up as neutral
contemporary white boxes, where the whole historical interior is replaced or
concealed by a pristine white interior and this leads to a loss of its internal historical
aesthetic value.
To counter this and to retain the significant aesthetics of these interiors for ourselves and
our future generations, heritage legislation offers a certain amount of protection
through their respective guidelines and principles during adaptation. However, these
guidelines do not offer concrete methods on the responsive adaptation of historical
interiors into contemporary exhibition spaces. To address this problem and provide a
substitute for the white box, alternative methods for the responsive adaptation of the
historical interior into a contemporary exhibition space are highlighted and
investigated. Through this investigation, this study aims to provide responsive approaches which
interior designers may adopt during adaptation that respect, acknowledge and
highlight the significance of the reappropriated space in the design of contemporary
exhibition venues.

Previous issue date: 2009 / Resumo: Ao partir da percepção de um imaginário social que associa a etiqueta e a decoração à "coisa de dondoca", "coisa de rico" e "coisa de mulher" consolidou-se como um veio fértil a busca por compreensões que evidenciassem outros sentidos e olhares sobre o universo do "refinamento". Assim, esta tese teve como primeira frente de reflexão os manuais de etiqueta e de decoração, as revistas especializadas em decoração e os programas televisivos a fim de compreender a constituição de um repertório cultural utilizado por consultores e pelo público interessado na legitimidade da experiência do "refinamento". No entanto, com a observação participante nos cursos sobre esses temas, o segundo aporte de pesquisa, vistos, especialmente, como searas femininas, outros significados atravessados por diferenças de classe, raça e sexualidade emergiram. Nesse sentido, ao me debruçar sobre as malhas do "refinamento", diferentes significados puderam vir à tona afastando visões essencializadoras sobre temas que poderiam, a princípio, ser considerados "menores" / Abstract: Giving the perception of social imaginaries that thinks of etiquette and decoration as a "thing of riches", a "thing of women" and a "thing of high class rich women who are vain and idle", the search for an understanding of other meanings and views on the universe of "refinement" consolidates itself as a fertile thread to be explored. Thus, the present thesis has as its first front of thinking the etiquette and decoration manuals, the magazines specialized in decoration and the television shows, in order to understand the constitution of a cultural repertoire used by consultants and by the public interested in the legitimacy of the "refinement" experiment. Notwithstanding, with the records of the author's participant observation taken in etiquette and decoration classes, meant as a second contribution for the present thesis, which were seen, especially, as feminine fields of activity, other meanings crossed by class, race, and sexuality differences emerged. An approach to the urban history of early Victorian Grahamstown, 1832-53, with particular reference to the interiors and material culture of domestic dwellingsScott, Patricia Elena January 1988 (has links)
This study is a venture in urban history in that although housing has been the subject of a number of recent studies, little attempt has been made within the British urban history framework to give serious study to what lies behind the architectural facade, the material domestic culture of an urban community. An important objective of this study is to examine the material culture of domestic dwellings in early Victorian Grahamstown, also referring to other parts of the Cape Colony. Where possible these facts are related to the occupants of the dwellings. No community, urban or rural, can be divorced from the influences which lie beyond its immediate locality in region or metropol. As a preliminary to this study the urban background of industrial Britain is examined, as are English and Dutch cultural influences on the interiors of Cape homes in general. The occupational stratification and spatial structure of early Victorian Grahamstown are then explored, leading into· a discussion of the material domestic culture of the interiors of Grahamstown dwellings. In the final analysis, this study is an attempt to uncover the character of early Victorian Grahamstown and its possible implications for English cultural influences at the Cape. In so doing, not only what constitutes the domestic material culture of Grahamstown is established, but beyond that, a comparison made with domestic material cultural developments in another colonial, though not frontier, settlement with roots in Georgian and Victorian England, namely Australia.

The specific area of interest in this work is to explore decon- struction of printed motifs in relation to shape as a method of construction. One of the main objectives of this explo- ration is to change the traditional ways in which designers work with print and material in relation to form. This implies to question the structures currently present within the fashion industry as well as preconceived ideas of existing techniques, their limitations and visual appearances. What is presented in this work is how print and material can be brought forward and make out the foundation of the process. Please note that this does not imply that form comes secondary. Instead the idea is to present a method of working where these different factors have a vital connection and where form is a product of the construction and placement of print motifs. Resulting in form which is dependent on print and in turn, print which is dependent on form.

This paper is to present a student interior design laboratory manual for Perspective Drawing 134. A mechanical and freehand approach to the grid method of perspective is used. Chapter I reviews the significance of the problem, definitions of terms of perspective, data sources and method of procedure. Chanter II explains a brief overview of perspective from primitive man to its present use in interior design. Chapter III reviews the general principles of perspective. Chapter IV presents the grid method to one-point and two-point perspective, both mechanical and freehand approaches. Included are step by step illustrations and explanations of the method. Chapter V summarizes the intent of this study.

Maturation de la capside du bactériophage T5 : étude structurale et fonctionnelle de la protéine de décoration pb10 / Maturation of the bacteriophage T5 capsid : structural and functional study of the decoration protein pb10Vernhes, Emeline 30 November 2016 (has links)
Le bactériophage T5, qui infecte la bactérie Escherichia coli, est constitué d’une capside icosaédrique renfermant un ADN double brin et d’une queue permettant le transfert de son ADN dans le cytoplasme de la cellule hôte. Au cours de la morphogénèse, la capside et la queue sont assemblées séparément puis connectées pour former les particules infectieuses. La capside de T5 est d'abord assemblée sous forme d'une procapside vide constituée de 775 copies d’une protéine unique qui s'organise en hexamères et pentamères pour former respectivement les faces et les sommets de l’icosaèdre. Un des sommets est occupé par la protéine portale qui constitue un pore d’entrée pour l’ADN. L’encapsidation du génome à travers le canal portal, assurée par un moteur moléculaire, provoque l’expansion de la procapside. La capside pleine d'ADN est ensuite décorée par la protéine pb10 qui se fixe sur sa surface externe, au centre des 120 hexamères, et elle est fermée par la protéine p144 qui constitue le point d'ancrage pour la queue.Les objectifs de ma thèse étaient de déterminer la structure, la fonction et le mécanisme de fixation à la capside des deux protéines pb10 et p144. J’ai produit et purifié la protéine de fermeture p144 dont la structure et les caractéristiques de fixation sur la capside seront prochainement étudiées. J’ai résolu la structure de la protéine de décoration pb10 en solution par résonance magnétique nucléaire (RMN), ce qui a révélé une protéine formée de deux domaines. Le domaine N-terminal structuré en hélices alpha se fixe à la capside, alors que le domaine C-terminal, de type immunoglobuline, est exposé au solvant. La détermination des constantes cinétiques d'association et de dissociation par résonance plasmonique de surface (SPR) a permis de montrer que pb10 se fixe sur la capside de T5 de manière quasi-irréversible, avec une affinité de l’ordre du picomolaire. Des expériences de mutagenèse dirigée sur le domaine de fixation de pb10 indiquent que cette forte affinité repose sur un réseau d’interactions électrostatiques et hydrophobes. J’ai démontré que pb10 participe à la stabilisation de la capside de T5 par des techniques de calorimétrie différentielle à balayage (DSC) et thermo-fluorescence (FTSA). Par ailleurs, j'ai démontré qu’il était possible de fusionner des protéines de grande taille au domaine C-terminal de pb10 sans affecter sa haute affinité pour la capside. J’ai ainsi pu fonctionnaliser des capsides avec une protéine d’intérêt fusionnée à pb10. Ces résultats ouvrent la voie vers diverses applications, dont la présentation d’antigènes en vue de créer de nouveaux vaccins. / Bacteriophage T5, a lytic phage which infects the bacterium Escherichia coli, is composed of an icosahedral capsid containing a double stranded DNA and a tail responsible for DNA transfer into the host cell cytoplasm. The capsid and the tail are assembled separately and then connected to form infectious viruses. The T5 capsid is first assembled as an empty procapsid composed of 775 copies of the major head protein organized in hexamers on the faces and pentamers on the vertices of the icosahedron. A single vertex is occupied by the portal protein which forms an entry channel for DNA. DNA is packaged through the portal channel by a molecular motor thus triggering procapsid expansion. The DNA-filled capsid is then decorated by the protein pb10 which binds on the outer surface in the center of each hexamer, and closed by the connector protein p144 needed for tail attachment.The goals of my PhD were to characterize the structure, function and mechanisms of capsid binding of both pb10 and p144 proteins. I have produced and purified the head completion protein p144 for future exploration of its structure and capsid binding properties. I have solved the solution structure of the decoration protein pb10 by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), thus unravelling that pb10 has two domains. The alpha-helical N-terminal domain binds to the capsid and the immunoglobulin-like C-terminal domain is exposed to the environment. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) showed that that pb10 attachment to the T5 capsid is quasi-irreversible with a picomolar affinity. Site-directed mutagenesis of the binding domain of pb10 suggested that the decoration mechanism is driven by both hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and fluorescence thermal shift assays (FTSA) demonstrated the role of the decoration protein in capsid stabilization. I have also demonstrated that a large protein can be fused to the C-terminal end of pb10 without affecting its high affinity for the T5 capsid. Capsids can thus be functionalized with a protein of interest fused to pb10. Possible applications of this work include antigen presentation for new vaccines.

This work is an investigation of how to redefine the perception of decoration. Decorative elements are reinvented as fundamental tools for creating garments and form in a collection of nine outfits. To show the width of what embellishment is able to create, the decorative techniques of all garments are different. The work also deals with the question of taste when it comes to embellishment. By using decorations seen as tasteless the work revaluates notions of good and bad taste. Materials as sport fabric combined with embellishment trick the eye and all small decorations together form new materials. New ways to use embellishments are explored, and the time consuming techniques are reminiscent of haute couture techniques, but in the designer’s own way.

The M.A. thesis deals with the influence of Aegean textile patterns on the decoration of 18th dynasty Egyptian tombs. It attempts to provide answers to the question of a possible reconstruction of relations between the Aegean area and Egypt on the basis of this phenomenon. The first part of the thesis places textile into a broader context, dealing among others with its importance for both cultural areas and the technology of its fabrication. The second part of the thesis focuses in greater detail upon the occurrence of Aegean textile patterns in the New Kingdom, concentrating upon the tombs and the men that used these motives in their tomb decoration. The evaluation of the biographies, titles and the tombs indicates that a ceiling with Aegean textile patterns served as an element of legitimization for both the king and his officials. In the final part of the thesis I was able to establish the incorporation of the symbolic function of the Aegean textile patterns into the concept of kingship. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
