Algorithms for processing polarization-rich optical imaging data

R S, Umesh 05 1900 (has links)
This work mainly focuses on signal processing issues related to continuous-wave, polarization-based direct imaging schemes. Here, we present a mathematical framework to analyze the performance of the Polarization Difference Imaging (PDI) and Polarization Modulation Imaging (PMI). We have considered three visualization parameters, namely, the polarization intensity (PI), Degree of Linear Polarization (DOLP) and polarization orientation (PO) for comparing these schemes. The first two parameters appear frequently in literature, possibly under different names. The last parameter, polarization orientation, has been introduced and elaborated in this thesis. We have also proposed some extensions/alternatives for the existing imaging and processing schemes and analyzed their advantages. Theoretically and through Monte-Carlo simulations, we have studied the performance of these schemes under white and coloured noise conditions, concluding that, in general, the PMI gives better estimates of all the parameters. Experimental results corroborate our theoretical arguments. PMI is shown to give asymptotically efficient estimates of these parameters, whereas PDI is shown to give biased estimates of the first two and is also shown to be incapable of estimating PO. Moreover, it is shown that PDI is a particular case of PMI. The property of PDI, that it can yield estimates at lower variances has been recognized as its major strength. We have also shown that the three visualization parameters can be fused to form a colour image, giving a holistic view of the scene. We report the advantages of analyzing chunks of data and bootstrapped data under various circumstances. Experiments were conducted to image objects through calibrated scattering media and natural media like mist, with successful results. Scattering media prepared with polystyrene microspheres of diameters 2.97m, 0.06m and 0.13m dispersed in water were used in our experiments. An intensified charge coupled device (CCD) camera was used to capture the images. Results showed that imaging could be performed beyond optical thickness of 40, for particles with 0.13m diameter. For larger particles, the depth to which we could image was much lesser. An experiment using an incoherent source yielded better results than with coherent sources, which we attribute to the speckle noise induced by coherent sources. We have suggested a harmonic based imaging scheme, which can perhaps be used when we have a mixture of scattering particles. We have also briefly touched upon the possible post processing that can be performed on the obtained results, and as an example, shown segmentation based on a PO imaging result.

Měření vlastností polarizovaného světla na výstupu vlnového multiplexu a jeho optimalizace pro použití v senzorové technice / Measurement of polarized light properties on the dense wavelength division multiplexing in optical-fiber sensor systems

Bučko, Kristián January 2021 (has links)
The polarization of light is one of the most remarkable phenomena in nature and has led to many discoveries in the optical-telecommunications sphere. The master's thesis describes the basic knowledge about polarized light, which includes the types of light polarization, the issue of Poincaré sphere, polarizing ellipse, etc. Emphasis is also placed on the measurement of optical power, where the analysis of various types of photodetectors and also polarimeters was performed. In the practical part of this work, the design of the workplace itself is described in the diagrams. Also, all devices in the workplace are analyzed and subsequently demonstrated measurement in several scenarios. The final chapter is a discussion with the measured results and graphical dependencies, comparison and analysis of results.

Fully Polarimetric Analysis of Weather Radar Signatures

Galletti, Michele 04 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The present doctoral thesis deals with radar polarimetry, namely with the investigation of properties of polarimetric variables potentially useful in radar meteorology. For use with dual-polarization radars, the degree of polarization is analyzed. This variable is available to planned operational radars. The degree of polarization is dependent on transmit polarization state and, consequently, it is dependent on the radar system operating mode. The primary operating mode of operational radars consists in simultaneous transmission and simultaneous receive of both horizontal and vertical components. The secondary operating mode consists of horizontal transmission and simultaneous receive. Both degrees of polarization are investigated in this thesis. Also, as operational systems are being updated to dual-polarization, research should start investigating the capabilities of fully polarimetric weather radar systems. Among the numerous variables available from this operating mode, the target entropy was chosen for investigation, also because of its close relation to the degree of polarization

Estimation of the Degree of Polarization in Polarimetric SAR Imagery : Principles and Applications / Traitement d’images polarimétriques SAR : application à la télédétection et à l’observation de la Terre

Shirvany, Réza 30 October 2012 (has links)
Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems have become highly fruitful thanks to their wide area coverage and day and night all-weather capabilities. Several polarimetric SARs have been flown over the last few decades with a variety of polarimetric SAR imaging modes; traditional ones are linear singleand dual-pol modes. More sophisticated ones are full-pol modes. Other alternative modes, such as hybrid and compact dual-pol, have also been recently proposed for future SAR missions. The discussion is vivid across the remote sensing society about both the utility of such alternative modes, and also the trade-off between dual and full polarimetry. This thesis contributes to that discussion by analyzing and comparing different polarimetric SAR modes in a variety of geoscience applications, with a particular focus on maritime monitoring and surveillance. For our comparisons, we make use of a fundamental, physically related discriminator called the Degree of Polarization (DoP). This scalar parameter has been recognized as one of the most important parameters characterizing a partially polarized electromagnetic wave. Based on a detailed statistical analysis of polarimetric SAR images, we propose efficient estimators of the DoP for both coherent and in-coherent SAR systems. We extend the DoP concept to different hybrid and compact SAR modes and compare the achieved performance with different full-pol methods. We perform a detailed study of vessel detection and oil-spill recognition, based on linear and hybrid/compact dual-pol DoP, using recent data from the Deepwater Horizon oil-spill, acquired by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)/Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR). Extensive experiments are also performed over various terrain types, such as urban, vegetation, and ocean, using the data acquired by the Canadian RADARSAT-2 and the NASA/JPL Airborne SAR (AirSAR) system.

Rehioui, Othman Elmehdi 14 June 2011 (has links)
This thesis work aimed to propose a new methodology for electro-optical characterization ofQCW laser diodes array (LDA) at emitter level by using a dedicated test bench. After detailedmetrological study, a methodology for selecting an early failure indicator and its ability to assess theLDA reliability in operational conditions (> 109 Shots at 100Hz/200μs) has been described. The LDAdegradation analysis were based on identification of parametric failure signatures highlighted after aset of accelerated tests and have been focused on the evolution of optical power, optical spectrum(λmax) and the degree of polarization (DOP) of each emitter on the LDA. We also explain the strongcomplementarity between the measured DOP of photoluminescence and the DOP ofelectroluminescence and a methodology for early selection of emitters have been proposed by takinginto account their location in the plane (λmax, DOP). These experimental studies were comforted bythermal and mechanical finite element simulations, by introducing several technological parameters inorder to quantify levels of induced mechanical stresses in LDA under different assemblyconfigurations and to establish the link with their intrinsic reliability.
