Crossing Thresholds : Curating Across Contexts within the Public Sphere

Hinks, Jasmine January 2017 (has links)
This thesis aims to investigate how a shift of the context in which artwork is presented necessitates ashift in curatorial approach. The discussion considers the overlapping categories of public andprivate in the spaces in which art is presented and encountered within the public sphere.By critically engaging with public sphere discourse, I construct a theoretical perspective rooted inChantal Mouffe's concept of agonistic space. I advocate an adaptive curatorial approach whichregards potential audiences as plural and fragmented. This perspective is then used as a lens throughwhich to analyse the curatorial strategies operative within three case studies of exhibition projectsfrom the artistic practice of Johanna Gustafsson Fürst, and to reflect on the future potential foragonistic curatorial approaches.

Is the Democratic Space Shrinking? - Human Rights Implementation in Viet Nam : A Case Study of the Democratic Space for Civil Society in Viet Nam

Mulkerrins, Pearl January 2018 (has links)
The democratic space for civil society has become a topic of significant international debate. Particular concern has been raised toward a worsened situation for human rights defenders and civil society organisations. This thesis aims to gain further understanding of the phenomenon democratic space by examining the situation for human rights defenders and civil society organisations in Viet Nam. This qualitative case study examines the freedom of speech, freedom of expression and opinion, and the freedom of peaceful assembly and association for human rights defenders and civil society organisations through the method of semi-structured interviews. To gain deeper understanding of the current situation in Viet Nam, this study puts forward the question of whether the democratic space can be said to be expanding or shrinking in this contextand if this has an effect on human rights implementation. The collected material revealed an opinion amongst interview respondents that human rights and economic growth have developed at different paces in Viet Nam. The democratic space for civil society has in large expanded during the past twenty years, but is of late revealing restrictions for human rights defenders and civil society organisations working to protect and promote human rights. Respondents expressed optimism toward the widening of democratic space in the long-term, but remained uncertain of the development of human rights implementation in the near future.

Får jag plats att uttrycka mig här?

Hammarström, Julia, Rylander, Tor January 2023 (has links)
This phenomenological study examines how Swedish LGBTQIA+ individuals experience their democratic space on social media. Since social media is a place where many people spend a lot of time, and it is therefore important that marginalized groups feel safe to be themselves and express themselves without experiencing violations. The study was conducted using semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. The results showed that the interviewees experienced their democratic space on social media in different ways, which could be divided into two themes: Experiences and use of social media, and safety in expressing their LGBTQIA+ identity on social media. The interviewees suggested that their democratic space on social media was limited as they exhibited a need to control who sees content related to their LGBTQIA+ identity. However, social media also contributes to the possibility of organizing, which indicates a large democratic space. The study also showed that respondents experience of social media reflects society, regardless of platform design. The results have no apparent negative effect and may have a minor positive effect on the design of social media.

Politics and power relations, especially those mediated, analyzed and criticized through the use of tools that are available in the Internet, undergo transformations in this process. If we add to this discussion the changes experienced by journalism, journalism professionals and what we understand by means of communication or media, we will have new materials for an analytical and critical enterprise in the fields of Social Sciences, Political Science and Communication. This study analyzes the profile of 4 journalists who use tools of the new information and communication technologies (blogs) for the production of information, criticism against the traditional media, interaction and fostering of the political debate with Internet users, and their contribution to the construction of a new democratic and public space. The professional history of the journalists-bloggers was analyzed, and also the structure and dynamics of their blogs. Through the analysis of interviews, the researcher attempted to capture these professionals thought concerning the media, politics and new information and communication technologies. The research s contribution, in methodological terms, is in the construction of the dialog between researcher and objects of study, aiming to characterize and identify, in its manifestations, a new type of journalism and journalists, political and media players, their role and place in the relations between communication and power in the networked society / Novas formas de fazer política estão surgindo no chamado ciberespaço, espaço de comunicação mediado pela rede mundial de computadores, localizado em algum ponto dessa realização do conhecimento humano chamada Internet.
