Exploring Typologies, Densities & Spatial Qualities : The Case of Low-Income Housing in South AfricaMancheno Gren, Ana January 2006 (has links)
This thesis focuses on problems that have resulted from the increasing pressure facing urban and suburban land use in South Africa, brought on by a number of different factors including the political and historical background of the country, as well as by rapid urbanization. The objective of this thesis is to present the perspectives applied in the analysis of the built environment in selected case studies, in which different theoretical and methodological approaches have been developed to address the research questions. The empirical part of this thesis consists of four case studies, in which selected low-income housing projects are analyzed from a perspective of how to facilitate higher densities. A central question addressed is whether the provision of housing structures built at higher densities, maintain, improve, or aggravate spatial qualities; and whether the application of these types of projects can be considered as possible alternatives to address the problem of urban sprawl in South Africa. The study finds that the house types analyzed address the density dimension of urban sprawl, thus reducing the amount of land consumed. There is room for increasing densities and overall urban land use efficiency, to which the housing types analyzed in this study may contribute. This implies that cities such as Cape Town and Johannesburg, which suffer from urban sprawl, have the possibility to grow in terms of population without having to expand further in terms of land use. The analysis of spatial qualities shows the studied types maintain positive spatial qualities, and have the possibility of increasing living standards. Nevertheless, a number of other dimensions need to be included when addressing urban sprawl conditions, in order to consider the possibility of replicating these housing types. Furthermore, this study advances approaches in terms of methodologies and concepts applied, which aim to contribute to an increased understanding of the current knowledge in the housing and urban planning fields focusing on questions of urban sprawl in general /
QC 20100909

Avaliação dos efeitos dos agrotóxicos Kraft® 36 EC e Score® 250 EC na flora, micro e mesofauna edáficas / Evaluation of the ecotoxicological effects of the pesticides Kraft® 36 EC and Score® 250 EC on plants and on soil micro and mesofaunaRocha, André Gomes da 12 September 2017 (has links)
Environmental changes caused by humanity, especially by agriculture, have been a cause for concern throughout the world. The soils are one of the environmental compartments most impacted by the use of pesticides, which are widely used in modern agriculture. This research aimed at evaluating whether and how the insecticide Kraft® 36 EC (a.i. abamectin) and the fungicide Score® 250 EC (a.i. difenoconazole), isolated and in mixture, affect: a) the soil microbial communities (microbial biomass carbon, respiration, metabolic quotient and β-glucosidase enzyme); b) enchytraeid worms (reproduction of Enchytraeus crypticus in different densities and their trophic relation with microorganisms); and c) the flora (emergence and growth of tomato - Lycopersicon lycopersicum), over 84 days after contamination. The microbial indicators were not greatly impaired and expressed a functional redundancy, despite some variations due to the presence of pesticides. Nevertheless, the control group presented a greater stability than the contaminated ones, suggesting a greater robustness and stability of microorganisms over time, which are important factors for a better quality of the soil. In relation to E. crypticus tests, the importance of microorganisms on their diet was ratified, since positive correlations between the size of microbial communities and the enchytraeids rate of increase were observed. The different densities of E. crypticus were not significantly influenced by the effects of pesticides on the microorganisms. With respect to the growth and germination of tomato, higher values of height and dry mass of the seedlings were observed in contaminated groups. On the other hand, a higher growth tendency of the seedlings in the control soil was observed over time. Finally, considering the complexity of the Brazilian pesticide issue, we emphasize the importance of compliance of the recommendations on pesticides application and reinforce the initiative of decreasing their use.

Previous issue date: 2009-09-30 / This study evaluated the sedative action of six eugenol concentrations (0, 3, 5, 7, 9
and 12 mg/L water) and five water temperatures (22, 24, 26, 28 and 30°C) on the
time for the beginning of death in plati (Xiphophorus maculatus) juveniles, to allow
high densities, optimizing the costs with transport costs by reducing the total weight
of the loads.
Six hundred fish, measuring 0.61±0.3g and 3.2±0.53 cm, in four repetitions of 5 fish
per experimental unit (plastic bag) per temperature and concentration, in a total of 30
treatments were used. The results indicated that the time delay until death of the first
fish in each experimental unit and the dissolved oxygen concentration were
significantly affected by temperature (T), eugenol concentration (E) and the
interaction of these factors (TxE). This study suggests that the time delay until death
of the first fish and the dissolved oxygen concentration were interactively affected by
water temperature and eugenol concentration. Eugenol, when diluted in water
concentrations around 8 mg L-1 at 22ºC and 9 mg L-1 at 24ºC, allows greater survival
time for the fish, but has no effect at higher temperatures.

Previous issue date: 2007-03-02 / The study had the objective of evaluating height and density of crotalaria planting (Crotalaria
juncea L.) as biomass indicators of production, N accumulation, and potential of nitrogen
biological fixation in the plant, and its influence in the maize crop (Zea mays L.). Also to
obtain a corn response pattern to green manure and equivalence to N added as ammonium
sulphate fertilizer. The study was conducted in 2005 and 2006, under field conditions, in the
experimental area of Embrapa Agrobiologia, Serop?dica, RJ. The soil in the experimental area
was identified as a Fragiudult. In the first experiment, a randomized block with four replicates
design was used to test four planting densities of crotalaria (50, 100, 150 e 200 plants m-2). In
the second experiment, it was used a randomized block, and it was evaluated the corn crop
response pattern to doses of 0, 75, 150, 225 and 300 kg N ha-1, applied in the form of crotalaria
biomass, without incorporation in the soil. For comparing N corn response it was used as
reference the N fertilizer ammonium sulphate, at 0, 38, 75, 113 and 150 kg N ha-1 dosages. In
the first experiment, the height of crotalaria plants was affected by the plant densities per
linear meter (15, 30, 45 and 60 pl/m), starting at 48 days after the planting. The density
treatment of 15 plants presented the tallest height. The variation of crotalaria plants
population did not favor differences in N accumulation, biological nitrogen fixation, ratio
shoot/leaf and dry aerial biomass production of crotalaria. On average, crotalaria produced an
amount of dry mass of 9.0 Mg ha-1 and accumulated 164.36 kg N ha-1, with an average height
of 2.6 m. From the total of N accumulated by crotalaria, 59% derived from BNF and the
remaining from the soil. This leguminous was able to add to soil, through BNF, about 97
kg N ha-1, consisting in an excellent strategy of supplying N to soil. The different crotalaria
population arrangements resulted in a production of aerial dry matter and N accumulation in
corn, in the milky grain stage, higher than the reference plot without N. In the second
experiment, crotalaria produced an amount of dry matter of 11.5 Mg ha-1 and accumulated
328 kg N ha-1 in 112 days. Each unit of mineral-N and green manure-N resulted in an
increment of 22.27 and 11.98 kg ha-1, respectively. A linear model was also adjusted for total
N accumulation in corn as function of green manure-N doses (R2 = 0.64) and with Nammonium
sulphate (R2 = 0.79) to 5% of significance level. Each unit of mineral-N and green
manure-N resulted in an increment of 0.43 and 0.09 kg ha-1, respectively. It was concluded,
through the angular coefficients of the linear regression equations, which green manure and
mineral fertilizer did not presented same efficiency, neither in crotalaria dry biomass
production nor in total N accumulation. Therefore, it takes twice and five times more green
manure to reach the same production of dry matter and total N accumulation, respectively.
Embrapa Agrobiologia, Serop?dica, RJ.
leitoso superior a testemunha n?o nitrogenada. No segundo experimento, a crotal?ria produziu
respectivamente.

A study of the structure and dynamics of Saturn's inner plasma diskHolmberg, Mika January 2015 (has links)
This thesis presents a study of the inner plasma disk of Saturn. The results are derived from measurements by the instruments on board the Cassini spacecraft, mainly the Cassini Langmuir probe (LP), which has been in orbit around Saturn since 2004. One of the great discoveries of the Cassini spacecraft is that the Saturnian moon Enceladus, located at 3.95 Saturn radii (1 RS = 60,268 km), constantly expels water vapor and condensed water from ridges and troughs located in its south polar region. Impact ionization and photoionization of the water molecules, and subsequent transport, creates a plasma disk around the orbit of Enceladus. The plasma disk ion components are mainly hydrogen ions H+ and water group ions W+ (O+, OH+, H2O+, and H3O+). The Cassini LP is used to measure the properties of the plasma. A new method to derive ion density and ion velocity from Langmuir probe measurements has been developed. The estimated LP statistics are used to derive the extension of the plasma disk, which show plasma densities above ~20 cm-3 in between 2.7 and 8.8 RS. The densities also show a very variable plasma disk, varying with one order of magnitude at the inner part of the disk. We show that the density variation could partly be explained by a dayside/nightside asymmetry in both equatorial ion densities and azimuthal ion velocities. The asymmetry is suggested to be due to the particle orbits being shifted towards the Sun that in turn would cause the whole plasma disk to be shifted. We also investigate the ion loss processes of the inner plasma disk and conclude that loss by transport dominates loss by recombination in the entire region. However, loss by recombination is still important in the region closest to Enceladus (~±0.5 RS) where it differs with only a factor of two from ion transport loss.

The present work had the objective of evaluating the influence of row spacing and population densities, in two corn hybrids, on the agronomic performance of the culture with enface on production components and productivity. The experiment was carried out in the agricultural year of 2006/2007, under field conditions, in a Typical Haplustox , clay texture, at 21°15’22” South latitude and longitude 48°18’58” W, at Jaboticabal – SP, Brazil. The experimental design was a complete randomized block, in split split-plot scheme with 24 treatments, where the plots were composed by three row spacing (40, 60 e 80 cm), the split-plots by two contrastive hybrids (30K73 ND 30F80) and the split split-plots by four population densities (30, 50, 70, e 90 thousand plants per hectare), with three replications. The following variables were evaluated: plant height, first ear height, number of ear per plant, stem diameter, plant lodging and breakage, number of grains per ear, mass of grains per ear, mass of a thousand grains, grain yield and yield index. Furthermore, grain chemical analyses were done to determine the content of saccharose, redacting sugars and starch. It was verified that corn productivity rises with the reduction of row spacing from 80 to 40 cm, that the best plant arrangement, for the hybrids 30K73 and P0F80, under Jaboticabal environment conditions, is the combination of 40 cm row spacing and 75 and 80 thousand plants per hectare, respectively. Final grain glicidic composition is not altered by the spacial arrangements of corn plants.

Abstract: The present work had the objective of evaluating the influence of row spacing and population densities, in two corn hybrids, on the agronomic performance of the culture with enface on production components and productivity. The experiment was carried out in the agricultural year of 2006/2007, under field conditions, in a Typical Haplustox , clay texture, at 21°15'22" South latitude and longitude 48°18'58" W, at Jaboticabal - SP, Brazil. / Orientador: Domingos Fornasieri Filho / Coorientador: Jairo Osvaldo Cazetta / Banca: Aildson Pereira Duarte / Banca: Orivaldo Arf / Mestre

t0 = -1.26, r2 = 0.97. A taxa de mortalidade estimada para indivíduos coletados em áreas costeiras foi Z = 0.22 com sobrevivência de S = 0.78 year-1
. Para a analise microquímica dos
otólitos foram medidos seis elementos:
7
Li, 24Mg, 55Mn, 59Co, 88Sr and 137Ba para indivíduos
Contrariamente, assinaturas
manguezais e juvenis e subadultos habitando recifes rasos adjacentes.
Resultados sugerem ainda a movimentação
Current objective of this thesis was to evaluate the connectivity among a shallow nursery area
and deeper coastal ecossystems for L. alexandrei, and study utilization of such habitats in
different life stages for L. alexandrei and L. jocu in the coastal areas of Pernambuco. In order
to better understand movement between these areas, combined methods were applied: (1)
initially age structure and size of L. alexandrei individuals were determined between estuarine
(depths < 5 m) and deeper coastal areas (depths between 30 and 60 m); (2) otoliths
microquimistry of L. alexandrei caught in estuarine and coastal areas were tested to evidence
possible movement between these areas; (3) the utilization of mangroves and adjacent shallow
reef areas in different life stages were studied through underwater visual census for L.
alexandrei and L. jocu.
Biological samples (otoliths) of L. alexandrei were collected through fishing landings of
corral fisheries in estuarine areas and guillnets and traps for coastal areas between
Pernambuco and Alagoas States. Data were collected during three consecutive years (2010-
2012). Otoliths of both juvenile and adult individuals were extracted, embedded in resin,
sectioned with a low speed saw, then age structure were determined. In a second step,
chemical concentrations of trace elements were analyzed in otolith sections using a laser
ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. Underwater observations (Total 90
transects of 10 x 2 m for each of the five locations) were performed along November to
March (2012-13).
Results show that inshore mangroves were comprised of individuals 0 to 4 years (mean: 2)
while individuals in deeper reef environments were older (range: 3 to 22; mean: 8), indicating
that an ontogenetic shift occurs at approximately age 3 or 4. Edge analysis was used to
validate the annual deposition in the otoliths suggesting opaque growth rings were formed in
the wet season between April and September. Growth data revealed that L. alexandrei display
a faster growth in early life stages, reaching approximately 50% of its asymptotic size at age
2. Age at length data were used to predict growth rates of L. alexandrei using the von
Bertalanffy growth model from where the following parameters were calculated: L∞ = 31 cm ,
k = 0.24, t0 = -1.26, r2 = 0.97. Mortality rates were estimated for coastal habitats, with Z =
0.22 and S = 0.78 year-1
. Concentrations of six trace elements were measure (7
Li, 24Mg, 55Mn,
59Co, 88Sr and 137Ba) in otoliths of L. alexadrei. Element:Ca ratios in the otoliths of juvenile and sub-adult L. alexadrei from estuaries were not significantly different among three
consecutive years (2010, 2011 and 2012), suggesting that physicochemical conditions within
the nursery investigated was temporally stable. Similarly, apart from two element (Ba, Co),
element:Ca ratios for larger L. alexandrei inhabiting coastal waters were also similar. In
contrast, otolith chemistry of similar sized L. alexandrei from estuarine and coastal areas was
distinctly different (based on recently accreted material). Otolith Mn:Ca and Ba:Ca were both
significantly higher for L. alexandrei collected in estuaries compared to fish from adjacent
coastal reefs region, while the opposite trend was observed for Sr:Ca. Given the pronounced
differences in otolith chemistry between estuarine and coastal areas, element:Ca transects
were constructed from the core to margin of the otoliths for adults (age 7+) collected on reefs
to determine the timing of movement (ontogenetic migration) from estuarine to coastal areas.
Based on observed patterns of decline for both Mn:Ca and Ba:Ca, it appears that L.
alexandrei begin to transition to more coastal habitats (i.e., lower element:Ca ratios) after age
2. Underwater observations indicate that for both species, individuals smaller than 10 cm
occurred exclusively in mangroves. A distinct shift was observed with higher densities for
individuals larger than 10 cm in adjacent shallow reef areas. For L. alexandrei mangroves
registered occurrence of (postsettlers, juveniles and subadults) while for shallow reefs only
(subadults and adults) were observed. A similar pattern was observed for L. jocu with
individuals (postsettlers, juveniles and subadults) in mangroves and (juveniles and subadults)
inhabiting shallow reefs.
General information provided in this thesis allow a better understanding of size structure and
growth pattern for L. alexandrei. Yet results suggest ontogenetic migration for L. alexandrei
between shallow coastal and deeper marine habitats as well as a better understanding of
habitat utilization in early life stages for L. alexandrei and L. jocu.

Optimal inference for one-sample and multisample principal component analysisVerdebout, Thomas 24 October 2008 (has links)
