A Lighting Design for Ingmar Bergman's Nora| Using Light and Sky to Explore the Perils of Gender Roles and the Agency of Women

Eby, Caitlin C. 08 June 2018 (has links)

Nora is the story of a woman struggling with her agency in a world in which men dominate. My lighting design for the play was embodied by a vast sky made of light with a low- hanging sun that symbolized how the power of women held back by their circumstances of time, place, and the strict gender roles therein. Contrasted by the harsh lighting of her home, the lighting heightens Nora’s feelings of oppression and underlying desire to break free from societal norms and take agency over her life.

The following report examines the point of view, inspiration, development, final execution, and a self-critique of the lighting design by Caitlin C. Eby for California State University, Long Beach Theatre Arts Department’s 2017 Cal Rep production of Nora by Ingmar Bergman. It is submitted in partial fulfillment for completion of the Master of Fine Arts degree option in Lighting Design.

Infusing High Fashion Streetwear with Personal History| Creating the Costume Design for Polaroid Stories

Martin, Amanda L. 15 June 2018 (has links)

The costume design for Naomi Iizuka’s Polaroid Stories focused on the adaptation of runway fashion to street clothes for the homeless characters in the play. The dichotomy between runway fashion and the homeless youth visually represents the nature of the play. It explores the societal oppression of youth living on the streets who are constantly striving for what they cannot achieve. The use of distressing on the costumes was crucial in portraying the extent of the character’s plight. The collaboration between scenic, lighting, sound, hair, and makeup design, created a successful visually new portrayal of Polaroid Stories.

Design otherwise : towards a locally-centric design education in Jordan

Abdulla, Danah January 2018 (has links)
This research considers the possibility of a locally-centric design education curricula in Amman, Jordan by investigating the philosophies, theories, practices and models of curriculum and pedagogy most appropriate for design education. It describes perceptions of design and examines the possibilities for shifting these perceptions to move towards transforming design education. Jordan is a neopatriarchal society, and education re-enacts the dominant structures of the state within curriculum and pedagogy centred on the authority of the educator. This thesis argues for a decolonised design education based on a student-centred pedagogy drawn from the process and praxis curriculum models - a design education and design otherwise. Working with a range of designers, students and educators, it investigates the potential of these actors to contribute to the development of a pedagogy for design education in Jordan that is relevant to the milieu and locality. It poses the following questions: What philosophies, theories, practices, models of curriculum, and pedagogy are appropriate?; What potential shifts could this require and create?; How do we shift perceptions? This qualitative research uses interviews, focus groups, and design charrettes for data collection. Through participation and engagement with people that have most at stake in design education - designers, design educators and design students - I argue for an emancipatory design education that reflects on design beyond its traditional service-provider definition. Drawing on scholarship from design and education studies, and literature from fields such as history, decolonial studies, architecture and urbanism, political science, economics and philosophy, I argue for a curriculum model and student-centred pedagogy that considers design's role in society. Literature on Arab higher education is preoccupied with reforms to help the Arab region build a knowledge-society without considering the role of curriculum models and pedagogy nor addressing power structures. In addition, within design, little literature exists on the Arab region or Jordan, leaving its design culture(s) largely undocumented. My thesis investigates design education in higher education in Jordan by concentrating on models of pedagogy and curriculum and provides an overview of Jordan's contemporary design culture.

smock x knit : Exploring the possibility of shape in knitwear by looking at theaesthetic properties of smocking, drawing inspiration from sportswear.

Ljungdahl, Sarah January 2018 (has links)
Since late eighteenth century smocking has been a part of different fields of fashion. From agricultural clothing and swimsuits, and also inspiring architecture. The approach of smocking has always been to tighten the fabric against the body. This work will challenging this by exploring the possibility to build form with smocking on the body, placing it in the context of personas on a winter vacation. By extracting elements of the smocking and sketching directly in the knitting machine using different techniques and yarn with contrasting characteristics, the ambition has been to translate aesthetic aspects of smocking via volume, pattern, material and colour into knitted material, targeting a sporty silhouette and expression. The result show an alternative way to bout fabricate and view the smocking. By letting the technique build form, placing it in a sports context suggest that smocking no longer is a technique solely for romantic dresses.

Identificação dos itens de demanda ergonômica em lojas de cosméticos e perfumes

Tramontin, Ana Cristina January 2000 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on the features that a commercial environment must have to supply the needs of different users (employees and customers). The literature was reviewed on the methods for commercial spaces planning as well as on the user´s behavior in a store. Based on the Macroergonomic Design method (Fogliatto and Guimarães, 1999) the ergonomic demand items were identified according to the employees and customers of five stores of a same beauty goods franchising. The results showed that most of the times the project of this kind of space focuses on sales needs ignoring the real users needs. Magroergonomic Design method showed to be useful for architects aiming to enrich their projects by placing the needs of different users of a commercial space.
