Biasibetti, Fernando January 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents a study conducted in order to consolidate a methodology for seat-retainer design optimization of a trunnion ball valve. This work is divided in two papers. Initially a comparative study between different seat-retainer models, developed with the support of the finite element analysis (FEA), is presented. The best performance seat-retainer was determined using the Multivariate Quadratic Loss Function. The main purpose of this first article is to identify the main parameters of the seat-retainer geometry, which could ensure the functional performance of the valve and corresponding quality requirements. The second paper describes an application of Design of Experiments (DOE) methodology, conducted in order to identify the geometric configuration of the valve that leads to the optimal operating condition, providing thereby, contribution to the Product Development area in designing more robust valves. The main contribution of this work is the finding that the four control factors included in the study exert significant effect on the response variables used (contact pressure and reaction force). Except for the factor "valve operating pressure" that characterizes the operation condition, but is not a design parameter, the factor that showed more pronounced effect on the response variables was the “seat sealing area”.

Santos, Anai Loreiro dos January 2018 (has links)
Silverskin is a waste generated during the coffee beans roasting. This residue has been showing antioxidant compounds, mainly 5-caffeoylquinic acid (5-CQA) and caffeine (CAF). The aim of this study was used the design of experiments and ultrasound-assisted extraction to develop an extraction method for the efficient recovery of 5-CQA and CAF from silverskin, simultaneously. In addition, the optimized extract was characterized, and its antioxidant capacity and acute toxicity were investigated. The response surface methodology and Desirability function were employed to optimize the extraction. The chemical characterization was carry out by LC-DAD/ESI-MSn. Antioxidant capacity was evaluated by DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1 picryl hydrazyl) and FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) methods and the acute toxicity by Artemia salina assay. The optimal extraction conditions were 45.0 % ethanol in water, the solid-to-liquid ratio was 1:20, and extraction for 7.0 min at 59 °C. Under optimal conditions, the yield of 5-CQA and CAF were 2.00 and 6.26 mg g-1, respectively. Theophylline, caffeic acid, and total chlorogenic acid concentrations were 0.53, 0.06 e 4.40 mg g-1, respectively and 9 chlorogenic acids were identified in the extract. The extract showed considerable antioxidant capacity, with efficient concentration value of 46,87 mg L-1 in the DPPH assay and 152,71 μM FeSO4 g-1 (FRAP) and high toxicity. The developed extraction methodology showed similar performance as solid-liquid extraction to 5-CQA yield.

Pěnění fermentačních zbytků při vakuovém odpařování / Foaming of fermentation residues during a vacuum evaporation

Knob, Jan January 2018 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the processing of digestate, which is the remaining material after biogas production. It aims to experimentally prove how chosen operational parameters of antifoaming agents influence digestate foaming associated with the vacuum evaporating technology. Based on the research of available antifoamers and the issue of digestate foaming itself, it was observed how three selected antifoamers (i.e. rapeseed oil, silicone antifoamer Erbslöh Schaum-ex and oleic acid), together with the decrease in the pH factor of the evaporating digestate, influence the final foam production. For the purposes of the research, an apparatus simulating the vacuum evaporating process was set up in which the heated sample was brought to boil by gradual pressure decrease. The process of foaming was observed in a transparent cylinder of a testing culumn. The essential part of the experimental activity is represented by a planned experiment which by means of a DoE (Design of experiments) method proved rapeseed oil to be very efficient. In contrast, other antifoamers, as well as the influence of the pH factor decrease, manifested themselves as insignificant factors, while the oleic acid even supported the foaming. The supplementary measurements led to a more detailed research of the effects of rapeseed oil and to the construction of a mathematical model describing how the concentration of rapeseed oil undermines the amount of generated foam. The main contribution of the thesis is firstly the evidence that rapeseed oil plays an important part in the reduction process of digestate foaming and secondly the determination of minimum substance concentration leading to the foaming reduction of a particular sample which is considered efficient enough to enable functioning of a vacuum evaporator. The thesis has also experimentally demonstrated the influence of some polymer organic flocculants which have been proved to support the foaming.

Improving robustness of a PID-controlled measurement system through Design of Experiments : A DMAIC case study at Atlas Copco BLM

Siljeström Hansson, Eira, Hellström, Emil January 2020 (has links)
Companies within the manufacturing industry are often aiming to increase productivity and simultaneously maintain the quality of their products. To achieve higher productivity and quality it is imperative to have tools with a high speed and accuracy. Atlas Copco BLM's STbench is a measurement system which enables manufacturers to validate their tools during different situations. The purpose of this case study was to improve the robustness of the STbench so it would operate well during situations with both low and high tool speed. To define and investigate how to improve the STbench, a modified DMAIC-approach was used. During the investigation it was found that the area with the largest improvement possibilities was the STbench's PID-controllers. Design of Experiments was used as the method to optimize the P- and I-element of the PID-controllers; hence, increase the robustness. The optimal settings could improve the robustness of the STbench with approximately 50%, but the result has not been verified. This case study presents results that can increase the robustness of the STbench; thus answering the purpose. Furthermore, this master thesis presents several revelations regarding using experimental plans while optimizing control systems, an area that has not been extensively investigated in previous literature.

Extrusion-sphéronisation de produits pharmaceutiques : comparaison et transposition à échelle industrielle de procédés d’extrusion par plans d’expériences / Extrusion-spheronisation of pharmaceutical products : comparison and industrial scaling-up of extrusion processes by a design of experiments approach

Désire, Amélie 06 September 2011 (has links)
Among the various methods of developing minigranules, extrusion-spheronization has many advantages, particularly since it allows to develop minigranules highly charged with active pharmaceutical ingredient and to avoid the use of organic solvents. This work aims to compare the performance of several extrusion screws systems, from the lab to the scale-up at industrial scale. Designs of experiments were built to identify critical variables and compare the extruder in terms of different approaches specific to this study. As a matter of fact, the ideal extrusion system is defined in this work as the one which gives the best results in terms of productivity and pellets characteristics (“quality”), the one which shows less impact on the product after scaling-up (“scalability”), the one which shows the less influence on these same properties when the formula used changes (“robustness”), and the one which allows the possibility to adjust or improve pellets properties with operating variables (“flexibility”). Whatever the approach studied, the results allowed to highlight the influence of critical parameters and their interactions on the different responses and showed differences between the different extrusion systems. The study at lab scale compared radial, dome and axial extruders and underlined the interest of axial and dome systems in terms of pellets quality, and radial system in terms of process robustness and flexibility. The study at industrial scale compared radial and axial systems, and identified the axial system as the most favorable in terms of pellets quality , robustness, flexibility and scalability. The conclusions observed at industrial scale are different from those observed at lab scale for the different systems comparative study. This confirms the importance to test systems at industrial scale before investing in one equipment.

Torque transducer sensitivity study / Känslighetsstudie av momentgivare

Narayanan Soundararajan, Hari January 2014 (has links)
A torque transducer or a torque sensor is a device for measuring and recording the torque on a rotating system. Torque transducers usually employ strain gauges to measure the torsional moment applied to a rotating shaft. It is to be noted that for an ideal torque transducer, it should measure only the strain that is caused by a torque. Strain due to bending load should be compensated as per the Wheatstone bridge arrangement. However, because of geometrical tolerances and assembly errors, the compensation doesn’t occur and the measured strain is a resultant of bending loads and axial loads which are undesired to measure the torque associated with the system. An analytical formulation has been developed using Matlab and this thesis gives the generalized indication of the strain due to all the associated loads. The user shall also entire the region where the strain needs to be computed and this knowledge can be useful for placing the strain gauges in the shaft accordingly. Initially, the formulation is based on a standard Torque Transducer used at Atlas Copco and then, a generalized result has been developed. The theoretical formulation is verified using the ProEngineer Mechanica software. The end user shall enter the different loads (if any) along with the geometrical tolerance values and the output will be an indication of the strain at point, strain at a region and sensitivity. The main intention of the thesis is to create a better understanding of the strain associated with the twisting, bending and axial loads and also the geometrical imperfections. The user can also make a decision on the location of strain gauges on a shaft for maximum accuracy. Finally, the differences in error from different possible configurations are compared and a conclusion has been made based on factorial design pertaining to design of experiments.
