Managing Sustainability Value in Design: A Systems Approach

Novak, Vera 16 January 2013 (has links)
The aim of the research is to identify core conditions that support increased delivery of sustainability in the built environment. The selected methodology is constructive research, which is distinguished by the dual focus on practical industry perspectives and theoretical knowledge. The first research question examines how Target Value Design (TVD), an integrated design management process, can elicit better delivery of sustainability values. This is developed through case study research of an exemplary design team and project. The findings identify a gap in the capability of the team to adopt a whole systems approach in order to make explicit the values of sustainable prosperity and develop a unified vision. This provides the basis for the second research question - how can design teams gain an understanding of the systemic nature of sustainability, and how can this understanding impact the design process? The research proposes an intervention method that aligns learning models from the disciplines of experiential learning cycles, design thinking, behavior modeling, systems thinking and unified vision. This integrated approach leverages creative design activities to capture the learning potential for individual skills and team building. While the research acknowledges the limitations from the testing of a single workshop experiment, post-workshop data suggests the intervention framework is sufficiently robust and versatile enough to adapt to individual workshop circumstances. The key research outcome is the importance of the people in the process of collaborative design, in their ability to envision a future state of sustainable prosperity and articulate explicit actionable values. / Ph.

Bylund, Isabell, Wadström, Johanna January 2015 (has links)
Design that originally only affected products' aesthetics is today known as a key success factor in competitive strategic business management. As a result of the lack of awareness for strategic design capabilities, a broader knowledge for the importance of design management investments is required. The purpose of this essay is therefore to enlighten the potentiality of design management and exploit how design can contribute to the brand identity. The ambition is to be able to answer the question; what significant importance has design to enhance brand identity? From a hermeneutic approach a qualitative method motivated triangulation and abduction. The brand SATS was selected as an investigation objective. The theoretical framework consists of theories of brand identity and strategic design. The main theory is called The Brand Identity Planning System and is in combination with the strategic design theories analysed and presented as the base for the discussion. In conclusion, the authors established a definition for design and found that design has the power to improve the brand identity through a user-oriented perspective, using an interdisciplinary and innovative problem-solving approach. Design can create a consistent brand identity, which along with identification adds superior emotional and functional value.

Styrformer genomsyrar allt?

Guaman, Guissela, Stamos, Elefteria January 2018 (has links)
Previous research has shown that Design Management contributes to the implementation of Total Quality Management (which in this study together with New Public Management is referred as Quality Management). The purpose of this study is to provide an increased scientific knowledge of the management forms Design Management and Quality Management, and their similarities. Through the knowledge of individuals, who have shared their experience of these management forms, the central parts of Design Management and Quality Management have been able to be identified and compared with theory and previous research. A qualitative method was chosen in this study to create an understanding and an interpretation of the informants’ experiences of the management forms. A total of eight interviews were conducted with informants who either research, work or teach Quality Management or Design Management. The result of this study showed that Design Management and Quality Management have many central parts in common, except for measurements which is only a central part of Quality Management. Central parts that are common in both Design Management and Quality Management are: values, leadership, culture, competence/employees, innovation, customers/users, quality and effectiveness. The analysis showed the most central part for both Design Management and Quality Management is their need to permeate the entire organization at all levels, the culture and the values held by them must be embraced by all employees in order for Quality Management and Design Management to be implemented. The authors hope that this study may increase an understanding for individuals and organizations who want to work with Quality Management or Design Management and for those who want to acquire more knowledge about these forms of management.

Scholars and researchers are attracted by the design-crafts theme and their findings reveal perspectives that are not always convergent. Recognizing the importance and provocations that the issue raises, the interest of this research is to understand the design-crafts relationship from the management perspective, more specifically the Design Management, from the assumption that its knowledge can be advantageous to crafts. This assumption guides the hypothesis that design management models can be adapted to support the work of the designer in the craft environment, provided that it values local culture and contributes to environmental, economic and social sustainability of craft producing communities. The role of the researcher at the Federal University of Pernambuco Laboratory of Design The Imaginarium, along with artisan communities, motivated the study in search of a design management model appropriate to the reality of craft producing communities, noting issues related to environmental, social and economic sustainability, from the analysis of design management models used in the industrial environment. The research considers the advantages of dialectical approach methodology to understand the dynamics of relationships in different contexts (artisan community, market and public administrators) and used the case study as a method of procedure. The design intervention model in crafts developed by The Imaginarium Laboratory was used as an object of study, and the artisanal communities served by the Laboratory, in Cabo de Santo Agostinho and Ponta de Pedras, were selected as units of analysis. Based on the criticism of design management models and performance in crafts, this research suggests adaptations that promote design management, entrepreneurial vision and business in the proposal to adapt the design management model for the craft sector. The association teaching-research-extension and the role of the University in the articulation of public and private sectors have revealed themselves important guidelines for the promotion of local development and social innovation and sustainability of 2 f communities, municipalities and regions.

Design som strategisk resurs : Finns möjligheten i kommuner?

Bohman, Cajsa, Peterson, Åsa January 2006 (has links)

An investigation of constraint-based risk management for collaborative design

Ruan, Jian January 2011 (has links)
In the context of internationally challenging economic, design has been regarded as a key factor in assisting design and manufacturing companies to survive. By using up-to-date computer-supported technology, the global design collaboration based on multidisciplinary and distributed environment is becoming a mainstream to new product development (NPD). However, during the process of collaborative design, risk is rarely mentioned. In particular, due to the complexity of design process and lack of efficient design decision-making, there have been some design collaboration failures across multiple companies. Some design projects cannot deliver the benefits as companies have expected through the collaboration. Moreover, a number of stakeholders, managers and designers expressed their disappointment at not seeing the projected savings in cost and time, which critically discredited the value of design collaboration. Many studies in academia and commercial cases have suggested that risk assessment can be applied as an effective means in the realm of design. Nevertheless, few of them conducted risk management research associated with design constraints under a collaborative environment from both theoretical and practical perspectives. In current risk practice, many risk practitioners simply report key risks to their management teams and no further analysis, which might subsequently result in confusion with excessive discussions. Consequently, to prevent the failure of design collaboration and perform a satisfactory risk assessment, it is important to perform risk management with an upstream perspective and at an operational level. An approach, called constraint-based design risk management (DRM) where a conceptual framework has been proposed on the basis of collaborative design features, risk management process and Theory of Constraints (TOC). Moreover, a DRM matrix has been developed to map, measure and mitigate collaborative design risk through evaluating the critical design constraints, and then specified design risk variables in the light of risk criteria. Design constraints are quantitative parameters that frequently affect main design processes and decisions. The combination of design constraints and risk criteria can be accessible and applicable by designers and design mangers. In addition, a Bayesian weighting method based on Bayesian theorem has been developed to measure collaborative design risk in a more efficient manner. Ultimately, a DRM tool has been created as a simulated scenario prototype, which incorporated with three case-study evaluations, to demonstrate the importance and effectiveness of using TOC and risk theory in the realm of design collaboration.

Labor produtivity in metallic structures design.

Esquerdo Lopes, José Antonio 20 February 2001 (has links)
The objective of this research work is to present a critical analysis about the way of management of labor productivity applied in the execution of metallic structure projects, specifically in the execution activity of drawings by design departments of structures manufacturing companies, defining indicators for the evaluation of that productivity, which consider the literary concepts, the surveyed data and the important factors diagnosed by the field research. The revision of bibliography involves the concepts related with projects, its administration as a productive system, its objectives, competitive strategies and critical factors of success. It still presents the productivity concepts under technological and social-economic focus, as well as its evaluation and indicators. The research is classified as exploratory, its approach is qualitative and the methodology used is the multiple case study involving four companies. Data gathering was accomplished through interview, using a semi-structured questionnaire as a route. The conclusion of this work, restricted to the methodology limitations, considers that the studied companies choose the critical factor of success in function of its strategic objectives, and consequent competitive strategy. The productivity indicator adopted monitors the principal critical factor of success: necessary hours to the execution of the drawings. It is used to accompany the activity performance and acts as a starting point for the detection of problems and correction actions. However, that action is fragile and very empirical, depending on the manager’s experience and perception, because the indicator used doesn't allow to trace and monitor other factors hierarchically below the critical factor of success, but even so they affect them. Some of those complemental factors are: the employees' professional experience, resources of updated CAD, the employees' updating with these resources and amplification and use of drawings libraries. A partial indicator of the labour resource and operational indicators are presented and indicated for this work.

Gestão do projeto de edifícios hospitalares / Managment of hospitals` design process

Figueiredo, Alexandra 30 September 2008 (has links)
The hospitals present a great design complexity and construction because of his magnitude, parameters rigorous, complex functional net of facilities, need of flexibility to incorporate new medical technologies, etc. To design a hospital requests the several professionals\' participation (architects, engineers and consultants) and demand an intense collaboration among the same ones seeking to coordinate the project solutions and constructive. The common denominator among all the involved professionals is the objective of prolonging to the maximum the life cycle of the building. So that the final objective happens, with reduction of costs and inside of the stipulated period, it is necessary a previous planning, so that he settles down a logistics of information and coordination between the planners\' teams and builders. This paper has as objective explores and to characterize as specialized architecture offices in design of hospitals develops and they coordinate the different involved projects and to draw preliminary guidelines for administration of the process of project of hospitals. The methodology of proposed research is study of qualitative case in a specialized architecture office in hospitals that it uses coordination methods and planning during the process of development of the hospital. The objective is to evaluate the efficiency of the previous planning in the construction of a hospital and as this process it can aid in the durability and to improve the life cycle of the hospital.
